I am a BJP voter, as are members of my family. On 16 May, we were over the moon. On 7 February, I voted Nota. My Modi-bhakt mother voted BJP in her constituency, but only because the candidate is a family friend. The vote was for the individual, not the party. If I had been in that constituency, I would also have voted for the person, not the BJP. The in-laws of a close friend are not just strong BJP supporters, but have a strong association with the RSS. All of them, except one, voted AAP — even the 85-plus fatherin-law, who would switch channels whenever Arvind Kejriwal came on the TV screen. He thinks you, Mr Modi, have become too arrogant. Sources told KNS that in this regard some of the top BJP leaders including the National General Secretary Ram Madhav, MP and in-charge J&K affairs Avinash Rai Khanna, are arriving in Jammu and Kashmir in next two days. The development came at a time when Dheli poll results have come out and the Aaam Aadmi party (AAP) has swiped

Besides the non-availability of sophisticated equipments, the ‘narrow’ ward for neonates is unhygienic where rats and cats appear in broad day light. “It is the duty and obligation of hospital management to bring down hospital infections, use decontaminating equipment to improve basic cleanliness. You can yourself see blood-stains on bed rails and walls,” an attendant told CNS adding that the ward is so filthy and narrow that attendants find it hard stay with their baby patients. Sources said that the situation in the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), is terrible as the ventilators and baby warmers are in bad and unhygienic condition allegedly due to the callous approach of officials. They added that the hospital is headless and from last three years it is supervised by Director SKIMS who acts as officiating Principal. In NICU section of the hospital, where babies are under incu-

bation, ventilation and radiation therapies, the terrible condition of these life saving equipments is evident. Insiders said machines in the ICU and other vital equipments installed in the hospital were not been maintained and serviced properly which, according to medicos, may prove fatal for the patients and may lead to death. The ventilators installed in the ICU are in worst condition as the air filters (bacterial filters and humidifiers) have not been cleaned for long. “There is every chance of dust and bacteria directly entering into the patients’ lungs which can cause acute bronchitis,” said a doctor

adding that the staff is keen to perform their duties but the lack of facilities and callous approach of higher-ups spoil everything. “Any ward for neonates should always be kept neat and clean. DGP..... ordered the police investigation into the killing and have asked investigating authorities to submit the report as soon as possible,” he said and added that the investigations have started. He further said that the police will find all the circumstances that led to his killing. “The initial reports said that there was heavy attack from the huge mob over the police party deployed in the area but everything will be cleared and case will be thoroughly investigated,” he said. Terming the separatists strike calls unlawful the DGP said, “The strike calls given by the separatist leaders are unlawful. They provoke the innocent youth for their political means and indulge them into the stone pelting. I appeal the youth that instead of pelting stones they should focus on their education and health,” he said. Pertinently, on yesterday youth Farooq Ahmad Bhat was killed and two others were injured when police allegedly opened fire on a group of protesters who were protesting against nocturnal raids ahead of anniversary of Parliament attack convict, Afzal Guru at Palhalan in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district. Reports had said that a group of youth took to streets and protested against the nocturnal raids conducted by police in the area last night. The protesters clashed with police and para-military CRPF forces in the area and police fired teargas shells and pellets to disperse protesters. As the situation turned volatile, police allegedly opened fire resulting in injuries to three persons Farooq Ahmad Bhat, Riyaz Ahmad Bhat and Zahid Ahmad Bhat. The injured were removed to hospital where Farooq Ahmad Bhat, 23, son of Ghulam Ahmad Bhat of Baghat Mohalla Palhalan succumbed to injuries while two others are critical. (KNS)

Shah..... why you did not call for elections in Delhi along with that of other state assemblies? Kejriwal and AAP had started working for assembly elections almost as soon as the Lok Sabha elections were over. We could all see the party working on the ground and were apprehensive that they would recover lost ground. But you ignored those signals. You could have called elections after the BJP did exceedingly well in those state assembly elections. Delhi elections could have been called along with Jammu and Kashmir and Jharkhand elections. But you did nothing and allowed AAP working quietly but surely to gain strength. What else could explain why you did not address the many civic issues Delhi faces — especially issues related to the lower middle class that AAP targets – even though Delhi was under central rule and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi was dominated by your party? You had eight months, control of the Delhi government and the urban local body and you did zilch. Sheila Dixit asked “who is Arvind Kejriwal” and paid the price. Neither of you used such words, but completely ignoring the AAP was something very similar and now you have paid the price. I am angry because of the humiliation of Delhi’s leaders who have devoted their lives to working for the party. Many of these people have built up personal relations with their constituents. When Harsh Vardhan was shifted out of the health ministry, many of us were glad that he is being freed up for the Delhi elections. But that did not happen. You put him in an insignificant portfolio and kept him there. And on top of that you parachute Kiran Bedi as chief ministerial candidate. I decided on Nota that very day. My mother got completely put off when Bedi summoned BJP MPs and councillors for a meeting and started talking as if she were already chief minister. She may not even have gone to vote if it were not for personal relations with the candidate. You may now blame it on internal sabotage. There was no need for sabotage. That one act had completely demoralised party workers and put off steady supporters/sympathisers. And this kind of mood spreads. Perhaps Bedi was brought in because of the squabbling in the Delhi unit of the party. But it doesn’t say very much for either of you if you have failed to put an end to this wrangling. Many of the young-ish upstarts would not have dared to openly jockey for the chief minister’s post if you had put your weight behind older leaders who inspired confidence among many of us. But you did not do so. I am angry with your taking in people from AAP, especially Shazia Ilmi and Kiran Bedi. Shazia Ilmi had attacked you, Mr Modi, savagely when she was in AAP. How could she be allowed into the party? I am also angry with you for your failure to check the Hindutva fringe elements and condemn ‘ramzadon vs haramzadon’ kind of remarks. Your statement in Parliament seeking to rationalise the remark in the light of the minister’s background was shameful. Like I said, I come from a BJP supporting family, but such remarks do not go down well with many like us. This kind of polarisation may work in the hinterlands of large states, not in a city like Delhi. I was also puzzled by your silence on the church attacks. When the first attack in Trilokpuri happened, I sensed something fishy. The Jan Sangh and the BJP have been in a dominant position in Delhi ever since I can remember, but churches have never been targeted. Why was it happening suddenly now? This was clearly a mischievous attempt at communal polarisation and to show that minorities were in danger under a BJP government. But there was no attempt to show up the people behind these attacks. Which led to either of two conclusions. One, that some Hindu fringe outfits were behind these attacks and that is why you were silent. Two, the government’s intelligence machinery was not up to the task. Neither of the two scenarios inspired any confidence in your government. Or did you hope that even though Hindu groups were not behind the attacks, your silence would reap you some electoral gains from the Hindus? If you did, that was a mistake. Because that lost you a lot of votes that would otherwise have gone to the Congress. Some Christian friends of mine had voted for you in May. That is another reason I am angry. You should have gone aggressively after the Congress votes immediately after the Lok Sabha elections, but you chose to ignore Delhi and focus on other states. In your effort for a Congress-mukt Bharat, what you gave us was a BJP-mukt Delhi. None of us expected the BJP to do so badly. We are not deriving vicarious pleasure out of this, as Congress

sympathisers are. But there is a certain indifference to the BJP’s plight, a sense that this was inevitable given the way the two of you treated Delhi-ites – as a little child that would rush to oblige you whenever you asked. That was your big mistake.

Delhi.... Krishna Nagar constituency by a margin of about 2,300 votes. Congress stalwart Ajay Maken who led party’s election campaign was pushed to third spot with AAP candidate Som Dutt winning the Sadar Bazar seat. Dutt defeated BJP’s Praveen Jain with a margin of over 33,000 votes. BJP leader Jagdish Mukhi was defeated by Rajesh Rishi of AAP by a margin of over 25,500 votes. Almost all the veterans of the BJP and Congress had to bite the dust. Taking responsibility of the party’s defeat, Ajay Maken resigned from AICC General Secretary post. An upswing of 24.8 per cent votes in AAP’s fortune over the last elections, culminated in an overwhelming 95 per cent seat share for the party in Delhi Assembly. Of the total votes cast, a whopping 54.3 per cent of vote share came into AAP’s kitty. On the contrary, the vote percentage of Bhartiya Janata Party fell by almost one per cent. It secured 32.2 per cent of votes in comparison to the 33.1 per cent which the party had managed during the last Assembly Elections. BJP, however, could not translate their vote share into seats in the Saturday’s election. Congress fared the worst bagging merely 9.7 per cent of votes as against 24.6 per cent during the last polls. This significant fall in it’s vote percentage is vivid from the fact that the party failed to register even a single win. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated AAP Chief Arvind Kejriwal on his party’s win in Delhi Assembly elections. In a tweet, Modi said that he spoke to Kejriwal and assured him of the Centre’s support in the development of Delhi. Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Vice President Rahul Gandhi have also congratulated Kejriwal. Rahul Gandhi said, his party respects the people’s mandate. BJP Chief Ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi on BJP’s defeat apologised for not being able to prove up to the expectations of the party. She thanked the BJP leadership for reposing faith in her and also the people for the support rendered to her. BJP today said that the Centre will support Delhi Government in its endeavours without any political bias. Briefing media in New Delhi, Party leader and Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, BJP will play the role of constructive opposition in the assembly. He said, party’s vote share in this election has slightly declined and party has suffered badly in terms of seats. Prasad said the party accepts defeat with humility and will analyze the reasons behind the poll debacle. He congratulated AAP and its leader Arvind Kejriwal on their victory and hoped that Kejriwal will work to fulfill the promises and give good governance to Delhi. Messages have been pouring in for the Aam Aadmi Party, AAP and its chief Arvind Kejriwal on its historic win in the Delhi assembly polls. Shiv Sena Chief Uddhav Thackeray said, the result amounted to defeat for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Addressing a press conference in Mumbai, Thackeray termed the AAP victory in Delhi as a tsunami. Taking a swipe at the BJP, Thackeray said, the tsunami is mightier than the Modi wave. He said, the Aam Aadmi Party’s astounding victory has proved once again that people of the country should not be taken for granted at any time. Thackeray said, the Delhi outcome was not merely a reversal of the Lok Sabha verdict in the capital but went much beyond. The Sena Chief also said that Kejriwal must live up to the confidence reposed in him by the people of Delhi and should not commit the mistake of resigning from the CM’s post this time. Thackeray added that he would attend the oath-taking ceremony of AAP government in Delhi, if invited. The Nationalist Congress Party too congratulated the Aam Aadmi Party. Maharashtra NCP Chief spokesperson Nawab Malik said, the people of Delhi have dismissed the BJP’s brand of politics based on arrogance, false promises and a non-secular ideology. He said that the Delhi verdict has paved the way for a BJP-free nation. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also congratulated AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal for his party’s massive win in the Delhi Assembly polls. Speaking to reporters in Mumbai, Fadnavis said, the BJP will do necessary introspection for its loss. He hoped that the AAP government, with such a decisive mandate, will concentrate on development of Delhi.

Mufti..... Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said the youngest party deserves the heartiest congratulations and best wishes from every citizen of the country. The PDP Patron said the BJP which has emerged as the most prominent force in the country in the last general elections needs to introspect and absorb the message from Delhi electorate with sublimity. In a statement issued to KNS, Mufti said while it was heartening to see the people belonging to different sections of the society closing their ranks to give democracy a push the BJP would do well to rein in the elements that had started feeling free to indulge in a divisive language and actions. “If there ever was a need for course correction for BJP the voters of Delhi have brought it home to them loud and clear,” he added. He said the results in Delhi are a reminder of the fact that India is a country of diverse religious and cultural strains and the people of the capital city have restated that fact in the most emphatic way. “The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, must take lead in disciplining these elements who had started conveying a different idea about the idea of India so that the country forges ahead along its ethos of tolerance, diversity and communal harmony,” said Mufti. He said the AAP has truly touched the right chord among the various sections of the people living in the metropolitan culture of Delhi, and in a way its resounding success indicates the real aspiration of the people who want to live life of dignity away from discord and disruption. Mufti said it also underlines the need to improve the delivery system at the common man’s level who should feel the relief in daily life whether it is seeking a water connection, electric connection, driving license, ration without hassles and without paying bribe. He also said that BJP PDP government will be transparent and corruption-free government in the state that will focus on ensuring speedy development and provide employment opportunities to youth in the state. proposal to Kyiv and Moscow last week, may meet with Putin and Poroshenko in the Belarusian capital, Minsk, on February 11, but prospects for the talks were uncertain. Forces on both sides in the conflict claimed territorial gains ahead of the proposed talks. Ukraine’s volunteer Azov battalion said on social media on February 10 that it has captured several villages northeast of Mariupol, pushing Russian-backed separatists away from the strategic Azov Sea port city. Rebel military spokesman Eduard Basurin said late on February 9 that separatist forces have surrounded the town of Debaltseve, a transport hub, cutting it off from a major highway. (Reuters) Most of Debaltseve’s 25,000 residents have been evacuated. Debaltseve has been the site of some of the fiercest fighting in the recent escalation of the conflict, which has killed more than 5,350 people since April. The United States has said the escalation is the result of a “Russian-backed offensive” by rebels in violation of an agreement signed in Minsk in September on a cease-fire and steps toward peace. Ukrainian military spokesman Andriy Stelmakh said on February 10 that there had been “an increase in attacks by the enemy on Ukrainian positions” in eastern Ukraine during the previous 24 hours. He said seven Ukrainian soldiers were killed and 23 wounded. Both Putin and German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier have raised doubts about the proposed four-way summit in Minsk, suggesting it was not yet certain it would take place. Steinmeier said much work must be done on “open points” before the meeting could take place. Russian President Vladimir Putin also has said the Minsk summit would not take place if the four leaders fail to agree on a “number of points” beforehand. Speaking after talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on February 9, Obama said he hoped that a diplomatic solution was still possible. But he also said it is clear that Russia has violated the commitments it made on Ukraine under the deal reached in Minsk in September. Obama said: “It’s clear that they violated just about every commitment they made in the Minsk agreement.
