Belgrade pride 2020 Belgrade pride 2020 marks the 50-year celebration of the first step taken towards equality in Serbia. The activist met at Hotel Moskva in the 1970 and its taken 50 years of learning to accept our selves and making sure everyone knows it. The pride program is split into three days: Friday celebrates the Serbian LGBTQ success stories, the main pride event takes place on Saturday and Sunday is dedicated to hold a conference outside Hotel Moskva to address issues within the community.

In previous years, pride was used as political propaganda to access EU membership – this years pride program introduces shared activities that maximises participation by the LGBTQ community, supporter and encourages people who wouldn’t normally attend pride to join in on the celebrations.

The architecture of pride follows the concept of structure and fabric, combining materials and exaggerated form the camp aesthetic resonates with the LGBT community.

All structures are temporary and made from scaffolding tubes with bespoke fabric alternatives. These structures recreate the internal spaces of Hotel Moskva, externalising the secret gatherings. Giving the LGBTQ community the liberty to be them selves truly and the safety to display their art.

Developing structure and fabric Identifying the existing architectural elements on site and rearranging them to create more intimate spaces. Testing the various levels of interactions based on these hiding pockets.

Further categorising the elements in two categories, structure and covering. Dissecting the plan of an umbrella structure and combining it with the cut and stop technique which allowed to decrease the natural weight of a material making it behave like a fabric

Ca r p e t Stitch ing All pride participants are advised to bring fabrics with them. These can be old, unwanted or scrap pieces of materials. These can be customised at home or together on the way of the procession. The fabrics will be colour grouped and laid down on the ground as traces of the pride route - stitching together Belgrade’s own version of the pride flag. After the march the carpet will be archived at the national museum to celebrate a renowned moment in Serbian LGBTQ history. https://youtu.be/5LRdUQHOGFg

Deployable Structures Drawing inspirations from the umbrellas bespoke floats are designed that expand horizontally and vertically. Made out of hollow plastic tubes these floats require 6 people to carry them through the march, allowing for people to gather in these circles formed by the floats encouraging healthy interactions across all pride participants. When expanded vertically they require 12 people to assemble it into an arch, giving more opportunities for members to interact. These arches are placed on the entrances of each stop at the pride and finally placed at the end of Terazije Terrace where together they forma a physical barrier stopping any movement/ potential threat whilst the drag show is going on.

The drag show is homage to the ballroom culture, stemming from social isolation these underground cults were a product of the queer community being banned from clubs and social events so they created their own. These structures recreate the internal spaces of hotel moskva externalising the secret gatherings. Giving the lgbtq community the liberty to be them selves truly and the safety to display their art in public.
