Week 7 This week we went for the off camper site visit. The site we went belongs to Little Project. It has started for nearly a year. Totally 6 buildings will be built hence a multi used block is established. The following journal will be separate into different structural system to describe the discovery of the visit.

For this building, the main material is concrete basis on steel frame structure. The bearers are steel I-beams and joists are structural tubing. These two kinds of steel beams used the lightest steel section to resist bending and shearing force

These are composite decking that span across the joists it increase the stiffness and spanning capability. It’s also the tensile reinforcement. The steel reinforcement will stay across the decking. The part that circled in yellow is the wood forming board of the concrete slab. Hence the decking is also as formwork for a site cast concrete slab. (Chin, 2008)


Week 7 For the other building we visited, the floor is supported by timber: These are the some pictures of the tools that use for site casting of the concrete. However, the second and third floor structure looks more like temporal structure for formwork.

This tool is used for connecting and controlling the distance between steel reinforcement. This is the testing tool when the concrete floor is casting. Wall system: Most of the wall is built by precast concrete:


Week 7 The benefit of precast concrete wall is the less building time, less labor and available shape and surface texture. Also casting in factory can improve the quality of the concrete.

The stair of the buildign are also site cast:

However, the manufacture, transportation and fixing of precast concrete cost much more than sitecast. And concrete is not recyclable and have great embody energy assumption and waste. It’s manufacture cast great green gas emission. The steel frame is connected with the old brick wall:

Next picture shows the connection of precast concrete elements. The plum cuts and sit cuts help fixing.


Week 7 The connecting plate is weld with the frame the blot insert is weaker at the connection between brick, hence the position of the plate is change a little bit. Not only the wall, the temporal supporting also used bracing and noggin the avoiding shearing and bending.

Foundation: From the basement of the building, the foundation of the building can also be recognized as site cast concrete. The pipe was insert into the concrete column through the lighter part to pump the concrete in.
