RPZ is a consultancy firm with a focus on unique designs, interior and point of sale spaces. RPZ offers design and planning services, as well as complete interior build out solutions through a strong network of partners for fabrication and construction. Architecture for RPZ is the creative translation process of complex requirements of the client into individual and suitable designs. The Firm combines its unique expertise in the field of automated fabrication and computer based planning with a deep understanding of traditional craftsmen technology in order to deliver outstanding and efficient architecture. Efficiency means to conceive designs that are sustainable and appropriate for the material involved, as well as executing a project economically and in due time.

CREDITS: Workshop Director:

Mohamad Ziwar Al Nouri is an Architect and Computational Designer with expertise in Parametric Design. He holds two masters’ degree –one at ELISAVA specializing in Advanced Design and Digital Architecture (ADDA) at 2012, and the second one in 2014 at Studio Zaha Hadid at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna (IOA). Introduction Workshop Overview Program Overview Methology Works of Participants

INTRODUCTION: Reparametrize Studio in Syria, in cooperation with Damascus University, had the official design and implementation workshop in Syria entitled “Recoding I” This workshop is a practical application of the ideas that we presented in our previous introductory lecture in coordination with the Dean and the Head of the Department of Architecture at the University’s theatre on 26 December 2017 entitled: “Design Strategies in Digital Architecture” to illustrate the principles of digital design and its applications in the architectural field. The main idea of the project is the design and implementation of seating and technical coverage and lighting elements on the real scale to create an interactive atmosphere for students and beautify the outer lobby of the entrance to the College of the University

WORKSHOP PROGRAM: An introductory lecture for the workshop to clarify the basics of digital design and its applications in the architectural field where will work on two main axes: • The first axis: 4 days intensive workshop 24 hours (theoretical study of the concepts of digital architecture and the extraction of proposals with makets for the participating students) Daily working hours will be from 9 am to 3 pm. At the end of the workshop, the proposed ideas and the models implemented with a rough study of cost will be presented using VR technology to the jury composed of the Deanship of the faculty and the doctors of the university in order to take their observations and start implementation on the following day PROJECTS SPACE LIMIT • The second axis: 3 days intensive workshop 24 hours (to build the model in real scale) Workshop mechanism: • Study and analysis of the lobby + location logistics in order to maximize student comfort and interaction and functionality. • Unique and attractive design, according to the “Digital Design in Contemporary Architecture” • The use of treated wood and stainless steel and the reason for the reduction of continuous maintenance (sustainability). • Build a flexible, comfortable model adapted to the surrounding environment with an approximate cost study Materials required for project implementation Wood panels + fixable iron + screws + equipment End of workshop:At the end of the workshop, the student will receive a certificate issued and certified by the university and the company.

The workshop aims to introduce the software Rhino, and how to build and develop parametric data structures (from basic simple lists to complex data trees). Participants will also develop a parametric system by introducing different methods through the most important aspects of the program and the main techniques for visual programming in Rhinoceros.

1st DAY During the first day the 52 students divided by 4 groups to have 4 proposals design for the lobby of the faculty of Architecture. They explored various methods to understand the system. This day was an intense series of tutorials, conferences, and discussion that will serve as an important database on which to begin our proposals. Our analysis will be responsive and dynamic, allowing us to dissect the temporal tendencies of the project.

2nd DAY At this stage the 4 groups start to have a design strategies for their proposals .The digital design phase will see the transfer of our analysis to a material proposal. We will look at design strategies, both material and associative, that serve to inform our project proposals. We will associate economic, social, and environmental parameters, and at their intersections is where we will focus our design. At this stage, teams will present the project as a whole, as well as the proof of concept element to fabricate in the next phase. In the end of this phase, teams will present their findings to each other and we will discuss how to bring this to a design which implements the productive elements discovered through analysis.

DESIGN PROCESS ; Shaping curves based on inputs and conceptual studies . Forming surfaces out of those curvatures. Dividing surface into contours based on fixed ratios: 2 – 4 – 2 – 4 Separating surface into two different but harmonious materials. Fabrication studies and installment methods. Design strategy was simple and straight forward respecting the design of our faculty and adding more aesthetic values to the preexisting hall.

CONTEMPORARY AUTHENTICITY:

1 CM

Concept: The model idea was inspired from Damascus decorations and hexagons. After studying the user’s movement, the result was that the corners were the most crowded spot’s. The grid formation is inspired by patterns from Qaser Al Adam as a symbol for Damascus cultural. Introduction contemporary forces and effects that symbolizes the dynamic prosperities of the culture of Damascus. Functional Solution: People are using one axe that’s why we used the corners. Choosing the corners as the main spot for sessions enable us to use the space as much as possible. Multi using: The back of one bench continues to make a table for the other, by using the leftovers from the benches for the shelves, we used less material. The space between the shelves let the sun light com throw and make a beautiful shadow. Feasibility: The benches coast the most because the light materials and the shelves are made by the benches leftovers.

ABSTRACT WAVES:

1 CM

The main concept is about creating a system from the chaos of the university’s lobby. The grid that we used is inspired by technology and specifically motherboards. It has main units of tubes of 90 and 180 degrees and subunits of 45 and 135 degrees. The system connects the benches to the walls with tubes that go above the bridge above the lobby referring to the echo of noises going up. The bench’s design is extracted from the main grid. The main lines consist of a main unit and a subunit of metallic tubes. The main Grid of metallic tubes is 2 cm in diameter and is colored in black. The secondary grid is 1 cm in diameter and it’s colored in bronze. The main and secondary grids “tubes” connect through elbows and couplings.
