t is often said that London is not a city, but a collection of villages in which we live, sleep and eat but rarely venture out of except to work and be entertained. There are over 50 of them and they vary, ranging from a few streets (such as Barnes village) to much larger areas (like Hampstead village). And while size is easy to measure, provenance is harder to tie down. Many of London’s villages have been created both in antiquity and more recently by those hoping to make money from the ‘village’ moniker. “Villages are often created by the freehold owners of the buildings in the area with a view to raise
the area’s profile because they have always been very popular with potential buyers,” says agent Christopher Sellwood, Central North Director of Foxtons. “A sense of community and residential atmosphere, typical for a smaller town or a village, are sought-after by many, as well as access to a wide range of amenities right on the doorstep. “Previously, buyers would move out of London to fulfil that criteria, but with the increasing pace of life and longer working hours, ‘village’ areas in central London are a more desirable option for many families and professionals.
