Aaron Bischoff

Welcome to issue 178 of the Flyer & Salvage. Thank you again to those who have called to say they are enjoying Flyer & Salvage. I hope everyone enjoyed the last issue in particular the word find, although I did receive one email saying they had trouble finding all the appliances until I pointed out that you were supposed to find all the words from the table and not old fire engines in their shed. Having said that, if anyone has a spare Morris or an AEC, please contact Guy. My apologies to everyone in receiving this edition a little later then usual. My wife and I welcomed a new addition to our family last month, so it has been a little busy on the home front. Baby Zac and mum are doing well although he tends to be a bit of a night owl. Funny how babies don’t know that night time is for sleeping! My Dennis F1 will soon be back on the road after breaking a forth gear selector fork some time ago on the way home after doing a parade for one of the local fire brigades. I was fortunate enough to be given a copy of the build plans from Dr Barry Hutchinson over in England and proceeded to about a dozen engineering firms to cast or machine a new one. Unfortunately they all spoke a little highly of themselves, and after some fourteen months of trying, not one of the companies were able to make me a new fork. Luckily for me, Guy was able to find a spare gearbox for me, so fingers crossed. As always, a big thank you to everyone who sent in stories and photos. It makes it so much easier putting it all in place and this of course makes for a more interesting read. And of course, submissions of stories and photos are always appreciated. If you would like something added to the Flyer and Salvage as a regular article, just let me know and I will do my best to add it to the next issue.

Enjoy the read.

HFEA General Meeting The next meeting of the Historic Fire Engine Association will be held on the Sunday 9th November 2008 at the Museum Of Fire Penrith. The meeting will be followed by a Christmas get together BBQ. So if you can, bring the family along with your fire engine. It will be a good time to catch up!

OUT & ABOUT If you have been out and about with your fire appliance, how about sharing your adventure with other HFEA members. So if you have a story or some photos of a recent run or visit, just send an email to aaron.bischoff@bigpond.com and I’ll include it in the next issue of Flyer & Salvage.

Ian Scandrett has been busy again with the Dennis Ace. This time leading the street parade for the Tulip Time Festival in Bowral. With the weather wonderful, Ian and the Ace were chosen to Chauffer in sheer open seat luxury the festivals ambassador, Maggie Tabberer. The NSW Fire Brigades Marching Girls and Band followed directly behind the Ace making for a great start to the parade. Thanks to Ian for the story and Roy Truscott of the Southern Highland News for the photos.

BLAST FROM THE PAST In the following issues of Flyer & Salvage, I will be adding some other old adverts and other flyers that manufacturers produced in days gone by. It gives a good look into the past on how things were done. I hope you all enjoy the historical flyers in particular the workshop manual flyers. A big thank you goes to Dr Barry Hutchinson from England who has provided the historic flyers and workshop manuals. Barry has around thirty fire appliances and has a very good website including the odd Dennis or two. His web site is really worth a look and is http://www.clavis.co.uk/Dennis/Index.htm In this issue we look at parts one to four of the “Know Your Dennis Series”. Page Number 5

Also available are the following workshop manuals. If you would like a copy of any of the following manuals, please contact me by email, aaron.bischoff@bigpond.com and I will forward a copy to you. As some of the workshop manuals are up to ninety pages in length, I would prefer it if I could send them to those who want them via email attachments.

HFEA CROSSWORD Following on from the word find in the last edition, I though a crossword might be a little more challenging. Of course by now most of you would have notice I’m a little one sided when it comes to fire engine manufacturers. This crossword is no different however I have thrown in a few others to make it not entirely one eyed. I hope you enjoy the crossword Page Number 14

Flyer & Salvage is the official newsletter of the Historic Fire Engine Association Incorporated (HFEA). The HFEA solicits and actively encourages submissions to this newsletter from members and other interested parties. Since many such submissions are published, this newsletter often reflects the opinions and views of its contributors and not necessarily the opinions and views of the Association. All contributions for inclusion in Flyer & Salvage should be mailed to: The Editor, Flyer & Salvage, 7 Berrinda Close Bolwarra Hts NSW 2320 Or emailed to aaron.bischoff@bigpond.com. All other correspondence should be addressed to: The Secretary, HFEA, P.O. Box 520, Kingswood NSW 2747. Flyer & Salvage is named after two of the firefighting appliances that operated from the City of Sydney Fire Station (traditionally known as Headquarters) in Castlereagh St, Sydney. During the early days of the Historic Fire Engine Association, meetings were held at Headquarters Fire Station, and were often interrupted by fire calls. Crews were called to their appliances over the public address system, and the call of “Flyer & Salvage was the most common. The Flyer was one of three pumping appliances at Headquarters (the others being the Runner and the Second Call). It was the first appliance to leave the station on each fire call in the city area. It was crewed by an Officer and five firefighters, none of whom were allowed to leave the immediate area of the Flyer during their shift. The Salvage motor was designed and equipped to carry salvage and rescue gear not normally carried on firefighting appliances. Most Salvages have now been removed from their traditional homes at the District stations and redeployed at stations which have been allocated primary rescue responsibilities. In this new role they are known as Rescues and respond to all rescue incidents within their area. HFEA OFFICE BEARERS FOR 2008: (elected at the February Annual General Meeting).
