Welcome to issue 177 of the Flyer & Salvage. Thank you again to those who have called to say they are enjoying Flyer & Salvage. I had always looked forward to each copy that Brett put together and I am glad that I have been able to continue on from Brett and not disappoint. In the last copy, there was an old photo that my grandfather had of the old Mines Rescue Station appliance. I had thought the old vehicle might have been an International but was never sure. Several people called to inform me that the vehicle was a Maple Leaf. Thanks to those who called. Having returned to my crew after “running the show” at work, I had planned to attend Randwick’s Centenary with the crew and appliance from work. But as we signed on, we were sent out to Blacktown for a job and missed the event. Speaking to Guy, the day went along really well. Hopefully I’ll make an outing one day! As always, a big thank you to everyone who sent in stories and photos. It makes it so much easier putting it all in place and this of course makes for a more interesting read. As always, submissions of stories and photos are always appreciated. And of course, if you want something added to the Flyer and Salvage as a regular article, just let me know.

HFEA General Meeting The next meeting of the Historic Fire Engine Association will be held on the 10th August 2008 at Huntingwood Fire Station. Remember that each meeting now incorporates a run. So come along with your fire engine.

HFEA attends Randwick Fire Brigade Centenary On Saturday 14th June 2008, Randwick Fire Brigade celebrated their centenary. The HFEA attended with three appliances and the Museum Of Fire attended with the Mack Ladders. In addition to the display of fire appliances, both past and present, there were displays of photos and items of interest show casing the 100 years of service that the brigade has given the community. In particular, there was a photo of the Randwick crew with the station’s Garford taken in 1948. Having a Garford on display for the day, it was too good an opportunity to miss to recreate that photo. Dressed in period turn out gear, Guy Ellis, Bob Weir, Mark and Jim Hall were able to take us back the 60 years. On display for the day were: Guy Ellis’s 1924 Garford Jim & Mark Hall’s 1947 Dennis Light 4 Museum of Fire’s 1942 Mack Ladders driven by Mark White Guy Ellis’s 1984 International 'White Knight" driven by Brett Williams

LIGHTS CAMERA ACTION Not to be content with his bit part in Fire 000, our Guy Ellis and his Iveco Ladders will soon be seen in the up coming movie “Accidents Happen”. Of course it should be noted that it is an American film and not one of those quality productions out of Pinewood studies featuring Dennis fire appliances. None the less, Guy has reported back that all went well, with the production crew being very impressed, with the truck that is! Who knows he may end up being the next Hugh Jackman.

OPEN DAY 472 STATION TURVEY PARK In June, the NSWFB held its annual open day. Many vintage fire appliances belonging to HFEA members attended their local fire station to add to the displays. Down Wagga Wagga way, Steve Baistow was there with his 1943 Mack ME 293. The station was open to the public for the day, where they were able to participate in some practical fire fighting experience, talk to the local fire fighters about fire safety, check out the latest in fire appliances and catch a ride on the old Mack. If you have had your appliance on display at the local fire station for the annual open day, drop me a line with some photos and I will put it in the next issue.

RECENT APPLIANCE MOVEMENTS Several HFEA members have recently sold, bought or swapped appliances. HFEA member Neil Baldwin recently placed his Thames Trader on the market. It was not long before it was quickly picked up by another member, our President Guy Ellis. I think at last count that makes it about 467 trucks for Guy. Neil had had the old Thames for as long as I have known him. He was always out and about with the old appliance. He was a regular at the Maitland Steamfest and local parades. I think one of the first displays we did together was for the Telarah Fire Brigade Championships back in 1999. He had the Thames and the Ford D200 and I took along my Dennis Ace. Another trip was out to Paterson just out of Maitland. We had been asked by the Hunter Valley Commercial Vehicle Club to come along. After some mechanical hiccups, Guy made an appearance in the Mack, Neil had brought along the Thames and I tagged along in the Ace. Tucker Park made for a great location to show case a wide variety of vintage trucks, ranging from double decker buses and fire trucks to military vehicles. And of course how can we forget the race back to my place, the little Dennis led uncontested all the way back. I must get those photos out for the next issue. The old Thames will be sadly missed from our area; however its new home is not all that far away. Page Number 9

BLAST FROM THE PAST Now I know what you all are about to say. And guess what? You are all wrong. There are actually other makes of fire appliances out there apart from Dennis. Well that’s what people have told me. I have yet to see any but apparently they do exist. So to show that I am not completely one sided, I have added a couple of copies of adverts from the past. They are almost cartoon like in how the manufacturers advertised their products for the various markets. In the following issues of Flyer & Salvage, I will be adding some other old adverts and other flyers that manufacturers produced. It gives a good look into the past on how things were done.

Flyer & Salvage is named after two of the firefighting appliances that operated from the City of Sydney Fire Station (traditionally known as Headquarters) in Castlereagh St, Sydney. During the early days of the Historic Fire Engine Association, meetings were held at Headquarters Fire Station, and were often interrupted by fire calls. Crews were called to their appliances over the public address system, and the call of “Flyer & Salvage� was the most common. The Flyer was one of three pumping appliances at Headquarters (the others being the Runner and the Second Call). It was the first appliance to leave the station on each fire call in the city area. It was crewed by an Officer and five firefighters, none of whom were allowed to leave the immediate area of the Flyer during their shift. The Salvage motor was designed and equipped to carry salvage and rescue gear not normally carried on firefighting appliances. Most Salvages have now been removed from their traditional homes at the District stations and redeployed at stations which have been allocated primary rescue responsibilities.
