My name is Zahra Bagasrawala and I am currently studying in the 4th year at School of Environment and Architecture, Mumbai. For me the threshold of architecture stretches much beyond just space - making. Space itself is both a physical and a symbolic element of society and thus it is a medium for qualitative and social change. It allows one to cater to the everyday nuances of these spatialities in order to carefully weave spaces of active exchange.

I consider myself as an organised person and adaptive to tasks given both individually and in groups. I enjoy getting familiar with new cultures and cuisines, watching movies and travel . In all I am looking forward to expanding my curiosities to new dimensions of architecture and everyday as an ongoing process.

01 THE GARDEN PAVILION

SEM 4 - WHAT IS A MUSEUM ?

The following project is about rethinking the museum as a series of pavilions holding landscape within them in the Oval Maidan, Mumbai. These are series of gardens asking ontological questions about what a garden is and how gardens signify the relationship between humans and the world through exemplifying and embodying it in a salient way (Cooper 2006). Here the fragmented pavilions, landscape, open spaces, built and unbuilt spaces, scattered across the landscape also respond to the existing natural features and the prevalent activity on site.

This is a contemporary museum that brings together ideas of how different cultures have historically reimagined gardens. The strategy is to build these pavilions in a manner to diffuse the a hard polarised edge of the ground and appropriate the publicness of the Maidan and make it a microcosm for gardens, a buffer in the busy city. Today it is used mainly by people belonging to a certain social group that is men who play cricket there. The aim is to introduce smaller environments along the edge to appropriate the publicness and make it neutral for all.

02 A CHANCE ENCOUNTER

SEM 7 - MASS INHABITATIONS

The studio focussed on analysing existing home making practices in Thakkar Bappa colony, Chembur and demographic conditions to project speculations for the next 10 year horizons to understand the emerging needs of a household through surveys and data collected on site. This helped to make changes in the house through repair and retrofit. The social space is increased by taking a portion of ground space from each house and opening it out to the street. This not only improves the pathway condition by opening out pockets, but also makes the street more interactive and user friendly.

Openings on the facade have been rethought in a manner that it allows for seating spots, kitchen counters and also lets light enter the space. Secondly, a lane of 1 m has been opened up between 4 houses which can act as a service core for these houses for better drainage and simultaneously address the light & ventilation issues. Another strategy implemented is programmatic reconfiguration of existing spaces to frame gendered spaces like shifting of the kitchen and services. This is done to explore what will be the new spatiality of these houses according to their shifting needs.

03 A PAST EXPERIENCE

SEM5 - ENVIRONMENTAL FLOWS

The construction practices of the promenade on Devka beach, Daman have largely emerged from ignoring the interconnected flows between all the life forms and their ecologies, it was in a state of alienation, void of any life or activity. It was an active zone for hawkers and shacks which have been forced out. Hence the basic idea is to house new experiences and connections from older ones, reusing debris and new materials to build memories of a flow that used to exist. To create a dynamic experience, not a static one. To reinstate connectivity and patch up the old and new by rethinking the existing aquarium structure in an ecological manner

The design focused on reimagining hard edged boundary of a public space. The existing structure on site was used to house the aquarium brick mound which was pouring out of it to invoke a sense of mystery. A marine biome was added to give the viewers an experience of the marine life that existed there prior to the new promenade. It is an attempt to create a new physical organic connection from road to road, a public thoroughfare which makes the beach easily accessible. The deliberately done contours and step seating generate an experience of the sea waves and give a sense of being washed away or flowing smoothly through the site.

PLAYFUL THRESHOLDS

SEM 6 - DESIGN AND DETAIL, WORKING DRAWINGS

Spaces within public institutions and urban contexts are designed through standardised logics but are produced and lived through several experiences which often blur, defy and occupy them in awkward ways. The studio attempted to rethink local programmes that have emerged from public activities in the context of smaller neighbourhoodsthat will critically craft the space and the builtform. It further allowed us to bridge the gap between the design from concept to actualization and generate a construction documentation set along with specifications, quantities, estimation and putting together different materials and their assemblies

in a manner that is conceptually coherent with the overall idea of the building. The aim of the design was to explore the multiplicity of spaces, work with the spatiality of gender and the idea of play. It looked closely at the idea of how the plinth is an emotional and physical extension of the classroom boundary making it a place of social interaction. The classroom spaces were made more porous by redesigning the openings and adding folding doors. Passageways connected these spaces to make a playful corridor space for the children. Terraces were opened up on the first floor and brick jalis were added for better light and ventilation.

Mahakali caves, Andheri 24

The following study focused on regulating urban spaces outside heritage precincts. The area of study was Mahakali Caves located in Andheri East. It revolved around redesigning the Mahakali caves road to make it more walkable and accessible. Methodologies such as aerial mapping, Kevin Lynch survey, total stations survey were used to understand the site context in a comprehensive manner to formulate a set of guidelines.

Methods proposed included easing vehicular traffic in the Y junction opposite to the entrance of the caves, improving the setting of the cave site by allotting and organising parking for rickshaws and two wheelers beyond the exit gate, improving walkability by proposing a footpath along the Mahakali Cave site and lastly installing proper signages, information boards about the caves at nearby major landmarks for better way finding.

SEM 5 - SPATIALITY OF THE FUTURE

Through this studio we tried to understand the future aspirations of the residents of Kandarpada in Dahisar West related to their house to be able to speculate how the house type will change in 2034 and then in 2050. We started with understanding the networks on site to be able to project possible future development scenarios and how they can be done in a manner that is coherent with the overall fabric of the settlement. In accordance a manifesto was prepared for the same. We looked mainly at repair and retrofit rather than complete demolition of structures.

One speculated development was the widening of Laxman Mhatre road as suggested by the Development plan 2034. The Patrick Geddes conservative surgery method was used for this wherein the houses that were in a dilapidated condition were shifted on top of houses in mint condition, widening the narrow road and thus improving sunlight and airflow. This method allowed pockets to be opened up on the street for better pedestrian flow and better sanitation conditions. This is more economical as it does not resort to complete demolition and redevelopment.

This drawing shows the old market street stretching along the banks of Pangna river. It is a narrow street lined with a chain of small shops on both its edges. The buildings on the street are oriented such that the shops line up to face the road and are more public in nature, compared to the attached living spaces that get concealed at the back. They are primarily built of deodar wood, and locally procured slate stone.

INTERESTS

One of my interests come from my families practice of making intricate designs and patterns on cloth with suitable details and comprehensive colour schemes. The patterns are delIcate and intricate with a mix of modern machine and traditional handwork. The following samples are a fusion of Lucknowi gotapatti and chikankari. This practice contributes to my curiosity towards collecting different patterns and textures .

Another hobby I enjoy is Arabic lettering and cursive writing. Whilst I am interested in other cultures, at the same time exploring mine is of similar importance to me . The structure of the text, the formation of the writing is key to be able to compose a coherent text in arabic.
