As we reflect on this past year, we are humbled and inspired by our community's collective strength and resilience. The work of confronting racism and domestic violence is never easy, and yet, together, we have made meaningful strides in addressingtheseintertwinedissuesthataffectsomanylives.
In the wake of ongoing systemic racism and the persistence of domestic violence, our organization has been at the forefront, advocating for policies that support survivors and challenge institutional oppression. Over the past year, we have witnessed a troubling rise in both overt acts of racial violence and increased instances of intimate partner violence exacerbated by economic instability and isolation.Yet,inthefaceofthesechallenges,wehavecontinuedtostandfirm.
While the road has been long and difficult, we are proud of the progress we have made. As a trusted partner in the community, we have worked across sectors to enhance people’s knowledge, collaborate with many companies and organizations, and build a strong path forward for healing. Our achievements were made possible by the tireless work of our staff, volunteers, and the unwavering support of our donorsandpartners.
As we move forward, we know that the fight is far from over Racism and domestic violence are deeply rooted in our society, and it will take sustained effort, courage, and solidarity to create the world we envision a world where every individual, regardless of race or gender, can live free from violence and fear. We are building a future for women and girls and making “A Bold Declaration: The Power of Women”isstillaliveatYW!

Camp HOPE is Virginia’s first summer camp and mentoring program for children who have experienced abuse and trauma. The program offers a traditional camp experience with evidence-based activities to boost self-esteem, create connection and increase their sense of hope. Pathways, a year-long monthly mentoring program, is focused on sustaining growth and providing educational opportunities.
During one of our Pathways events, one child was visibly withdrawn around other participants. Prior to Camp HOPE there were concerns of how this child would be away from home for an extended period of time. By the second day, this camper became actively engaged in multiple activities, making new friends and even convinced our Children ServicesCoordinatortozipline Throughout the week with activities and the Camp HOPE curriculum, this camper leftcamponlywantingtodoitallagainnextyear — Pathways Counselor

I felt very engaged and free to express myself throughout the Racial Justice 101 training. I loved being able to speak up and have my voice be heard by my colleagues. It felt like my questions had weight to them and encouraged positive discussion that was fostered by the most wonderful and polite ladies during the training. The other discussion participants also brought very good positions and view points to the table that I will definitely be chewing on for some time. Even when there was a disagreement in the comments, it was handled very professionally by the staff. Seeing new faces and making new connections with people I don't normally get to see in my daily operations really made my week!
Crisis Services staff responded to an accompaniment request at the local hospital where the client was having a PERK and strangulation exam due to being brutally attacked by her estranged partner the night before. The CSS staff provided emotional support and discussed services available to the victim. The client expressed safety concerns with going back to her apartment and requested shelter. The client’s abuser also took off with the client’s vehicle after the attack, so while waiting for transportation placement, the CSS staff transported the client for all her needs including; transporting the children to and from school each day taking the client to follow-up medical appointments related to her injuries transporting the client to the DMV and Social Security Office to order copies of documents taking the client to court so she could petition for a Protective Order

Shifting the landscape of our local community one life at a time.
As a transgender man of color, the client reported severe and almost debilitating anxiety when navigating the criminal justice system. The advocate collaborated with the Commonwealth’s Attorney, advocates in the agency and the counseling department to provide services. As a frequent occurrence, the client’s case was continued multiple times. The advocate provided crisis intervention and supported the client through the long wait of seeking justice. At the final hearing, the Judge found the defendant guilty of four charges and sentenced them to active jail time. The judge then applauded the client for the courage in coming forward to vocalize the intersectionality of intimate partner violence and barriers within the LGBTQ community.
A client, along with his young son, arrived at the emergency shelter fleeing imminent danger. Due to the incident resulting in no one to provide daycare services, this father faced significant barriers to work. The case management team diligently worked with him to apply for benefits, services, and Child Protective Services to provide a safe and nurturing environment for the child. Following several weeks, this father made the decision to be relocated with his extended family out of state. The case manager worked to create a relocation plan and formalize travel plans. This single father is now settling in a safe location with childcare and new employment.
