Fromtheriseofgunviolencetothestrugglefordeeplyaffordablehousingtotherightsofwomen,it’snosecret thatmanyarehurtingandcryingoutforhelp.Alloftheseissuesdirectlyconnecttodomesticabuseand intimatepartnerviolence. Andhereiswhy the W makes the difference. Yoursupportpropelsourmissionto haveanintentionalandinformedapproachtoourservicesandprogrammaticefforts.Wedeliberatelyoperate attheintersectionsofraceandgendertocriticallyandaccuratelyaddresstheseissueshead-on.

AMENDTogetherisagender-basedviolence preventionprogramthatusescommunitybased, data-drivenmethodstobuildhealthymasculinity, empathy,andrespectforselfandwomenandgirls. OurprogramwaslaunchedthisyearatSouthside STEMAcademyatCampostellainNorfolk,Virginia.
During22weeksoftrainingandengagement,young boysandmenlearnedtheirpartincreatinga communitywherewomenandgirlsarevaluedand thecycleofviolenceendswiththem.
Extensiveresearchbyexpertsingender-based violencepreventionrevealsthatthrougheducation andmobilizationmenmustplayacriticalrolein creatingacommunitywhereallwomenandgirlsare valuedandsafe.Onlywiththesupportofmenand boyscanwestopthecycleofgender-based violence
ConferenceonR.E.S.T.-RacialEquityandSocialTransformationisa traininggroundforthoseinterestedinlearningmoreandleaningintothe effectsofinjusticesandinequities.Throughinformation-collaborationactivation,participantslearnandbuildbest practiceswithalong-termgoalofbuildinga blueprintforthetransformationalchange neededtocreateanantiracistHamptonRoad
Thisconferenceisjustwhat'sneeded.The unapologeticyetcompassionately collaborativeenergyleftmefeeling refreshedfortheworkahead.IfIcould onlyuseonewordtodescribethe conferenceitwouldbe:RESTORATIVE.
Women'sempowermentisacrucialaspectofpromotingself-worth,decision-makingabilities,and therighttoinfluencesocialchange.Itaimstocreateabrighterfuturebyempoweringwomento maketheirowndecisions,pursuetheirpassions,andachievetheirdreams.Byempoweringwomen, we’rehelpingtoreducegenderinequality,whichcanleadtogreatereconomicstabilityand improvedqualityoflife.Additionally,itcancreateanenvironmentofrespectandacceptance,which canleadtohealthierrelationshipsandstrongercommunities.
YWCASouthHamptonRoadsiscommittedtoempoweringwomentoreachtheirfullpotential.
JenniferKnowltonhasbeenaforensicnurseforapproximately12years. Shereceivedthe"UnsungHeroAward"in2022fromAttorneyGeneral JasonMiyares.Aspartofthisaward,Jenniferwasrecognizedforherwork inprovidingsupporttocrimevirecog

Thejourneyfromvictimtosurvivorcanbe challengingtonavigateonyourown. ThecounselorsatYWCASouthHampton Roadsareheretotravelalongsideyou throughtheups,downs,andchallengesin thehealingprocess.Whereveryoufind yourselfalongthatjourney—nomatterifitis arecenttraumaorsomethingthatoccurred inthepast—ourcounselorsarereadytouse theirskillandexpertisetocreateasafeand compassionatespaceforyoutoheal.
Thisprogramhasreallyhelpedgive medeterminationandthewillpower tomakemehonestlyfeelthatIcan startmylifeoveragainandtobe positive,nothavingtoliveinfear.

Foralmostforty-fiveyears,YWCASouthHamptonRoadshasoperatedouremergencyshelter,providingtheONLYplaceof refugeforfamiliesescapingdomesticandsexualviolenceintheCityofNorfolk.Asaresult,findingavacancyinthesheltercan frequentlyprovetobeanobstacleforfamilieswhoarefleeingviolence.
Committedtoensuringthatnoindividualfacingimminentdangerwillbeturnedawayregardlessofcapacity,theYWCApurchased alargershelterinJuly2019.Thisfacilityhasenabledustoexpandfrom9to22rooms,increasedourshelterfootprintfrom3,000 to9,500squarefeetandmorethandoubledthecapacityofclientsthatweareabletoserveunderoneroof.
Pennyarrivedtoshelterwithherchildrenfollowingaviolentattackbyherabuser.Sheworkedtirelesslytosavebut wasexitedfromshelterduetomeetingamaximumtimelimitforemergencyshelterwithnoplacementinahousing program.Pennyleftwithminimalresourcesandsoughtrefugeatahotel.Theseunfortunatecircumstancesledtoanother almostlethalattack,whichbroughtherbackintoshelterservices.Shearrivedinshelterhighlydistraught,terrifiedtoleave thepremisesandinmuchphysicalpain.Pennycontinuedtoworkandseekhousingopportunitieswithinherbudget.Shortly afterhersecondintakeintoshelter,throughsupportfromourshelterstaffandvictimadvocacydepartmentshefelt empoweredtoproceedwithcriminalchargesandaprotectiveorder.Furthermore,throughhersheltercasemanagement, shequalifiedforplacementinourRapidRehousingProgram.Pennyhasidentifiedaproperty,sharedherstorywithalocal propertyownerwhoisworkingwithustoprovideherwithasafeandaffordableoption.Pennyisbeyondexcitedand gratefulforthisopportunityandspeaksfrequentlyofherhighhopesofowningherownbusinessinthefuture.
Kelseyarrivedtosheltersevenmonthspregnantwithheryoungchildtow.Shecameintearfulandshaken.Kelseyheld visiblebruisingtoherphysicalbodybutthosewereonlyaportionofthepain.Oneoftencanseetheoutsidetrauma,butthe insidetraumatakestremendoustimetoheal.Throughthesupportofshelterstaffandintensivecasemanagement,Kelsey wasabletobegintoworkthroughtheguiltandshameshearrivedwithandsetgoalstowardsindependence.Through generousdonors,wewereabletoprovideababyshowerandsoonafterherbabywasborn.Duringherpost-partum recovery,herfamilyreceivedplacementinourRapidRehousingProgram.Alongwithhersuccessfulgoalprogressionand workingwithourhousingadvocate,shemovedoutofshelterintoherownapartment.Sheisnowworkingafull-timejoband caringforherchildren.
TheNorfolkFamilyJusticeCenterisaone-stopcommunityresourcecenterthatprovidesfree servicesforvictimsofdomesticviolence,sexualassault,childabuse,andotherformsoffamily violence.TheCenterofferscrisiscounseling,legalassistance,andsafetyplanningtohelpvictimsand theirfamiliesfindsafeandsecuresolutions.TheCenteralsoprovidesreferralstocommunity resources,supportgroupsandassistancefilingrestrainingorders.Itisasafeandsecurespacefor victimsoffamilyviolencetoaccessthehelptheyneed.
OnMay22,2021,awomenwassexuallyassaultedataBayviewapartmentinNorfolk,Va.Shehadbeen outdrinkingwithfriendsandthenextthingsherememberedwasawakeningtobeingsexuallyabused andstrugglingtofullyregainconsciousness.Sherememberedhisfaceanddetailsaboutthetimethatshe wasinsidetheapartment,butshewastooincapacitatedtoattempttoleave.Shewaseventuallydrivenback toVirginiaBeachanddroppedoffnearherhome.Severaldayspassedbeforethewomanfullyrecovered,at whichpointshereportedherrapetotheNorfolkFamilyJusticeCenterandunderwentasexualassaultnurse examination.
Initiallythevictimwasunabletoidentifyherassailantbutafterthesexualassaultanddeathsoftwoother women,photosofhimandhisnamebegancirculatingonsocialmedia. Thevictimimmediatelyrecognized himandcontactedNorfolkPolicetoidentifyhim,andhewasarrestedforrapeonJuly16,2021.Forensic testingofthemurderedvictims’bodiesandoftherapevictim’sphysicalevidencerecoverykitallrevealedthe presenceoftheattackersDNA. Asthelegalproceedingsprogressed,YWCAstaffcontinuedtoprovideservices tothevictimincludingPERKAccompaniment,PERKfollowupservices,CrisisCounseling,LawEnforcement andCourtAccompaniment.
OnSeptember16,2022,theattackerwasconvictedoftwocountsofinvoluntarymanslaughterandtherape andobjectsexualpenetrationofthethird,survivingvictim.Becauseoftheseriousnessofthesecrimesand thedangertothecommunity shouldhebeoutofprison,theCommonwealth’sAttorney’sOffice recommendedthemaximumpossiblesentencesoftwotermsoflifeinprisonplus20yearstoserve,all consecutive.Thepresidingjudgeconcurredwiththerecommendationandsentencedtheassailantin accordancewiththeCommonwealth’srecommendation Inannouncingthesentence,TheCommonwealth’sAttorney’sOfficethankedformerAssistant Commonwealth’sAttorneyGordonD Fraser,NorfolkPoliceSpecialCrimesUnitDetectiveCalenD Wood,the YWCAofSouthHamptonRoads,andinvolvedfirstrespondersandanalystsfortheircrucialworkinthiscase*
CampHOPEisanevidence-basedprogramdesignedtoinspirehopeandresiliencyinchildrenexposedtodomesticviolence. Theprogramoffersatraditionalcampexperiencewithvariousactivitiesandanevidence-basedcurriculum.CampHOPE participantslearnabouthopeanditsimportanceinsuccess,connectwithpeers,andreceivementorship.ThePathways program,ayear-longmentoringprogram,allowsCampHOPEchildrentoreconnectwiththeirpeersandmentors.The programhasshownconsistentpositiveresults,increasingtheirsenseofhope,self-esteem,andconnection.Ithelpsbreakthe cycleofviolenceandleadsuccessful,fulfillinglives.
Thissummerwewereabletodoublethenumberofcampersparticipatingin thisamazingexperience.Wewatchedthereturningcamperswelcomethe newercamperswithopenarmsandwitnessedthesharingofpersonal storiesthatconnectedthecampersandbuiltthetrusttheyhadinone another.
AsChelseaShaw,Children’sServicesCoordinatorreflectedontheactivities“ Irememberonourseconddaywewereatthezipline,andonecamper panickedwhentheyreachedthetop.Theywereallhookedinandreadyto go,butwerescaredtomaketheleapofftheplatformanddowntheline.I watchedinaweastheothercampers,somewhohadonlyjustmetone another,cheeredinsynctoencouragethenervouscamper.‘Thisiswhatit’s allabout,’Ithought.Inthatmoment,theyhadeachother.Afterafew momentsofcheering,thecamperleaptdownfromtheplatformandslid downtheziplinetogreetmeattheend,ahugesmileacrosstheirface.They haddoneit!Andfortherestofcamp,theydisplayednotasecondof hesitancyintryingalltheactivitiesoffered.Theyfoundhope.
Becauseofallies,advocates,andaccompliceslikeyou,YWCASouthHamptonRoadsisabletodothenecessaryworkofequityandjusticeforwomenandgirls.
AccordingtoGivingUSA,givingwasstrongin2020and2021asdonorsralliedtohelpaddressincreasingneedsinaglobalpandemicandeconomiccrisisand recovery,andsupportedeffortstoadvanceracialjustice.
Whileindividualgivingdecreased,YWCASouthHamptonRoads’remainedcommittedtoensuringourcommunityviewsoureffortandabilitytosolvebig problemsasessentialtobuildingsaferandstrongercommunitiesforall.Withlongershelterstays,thealmostnon-existenceofdeeplyaffordablehousing,and inflation,wecontinuetodotheworkandshowupforthosethathavebeenvictimizedandmarginalized–regardlessofthecost!
