WHAT WE DO: COMMUNITY Serving approximately 8,000 individuals each year, YWCA South Hampton Roads is a source of strength, courage, and empowerment for women and families facing crisis.

We are a community catalyst for meaningful change and the advocate for shaping vital impact through quality services responding to the critical needs of survivors of sexual and/or domestic violence. ONE Education Fair

AMEND Together AMEND Together is a gender-based violence prevention program that uses community based, data-driven methods to build healthy masculinity, empathy, and respect for self and women and girls.

Our program was launched this year at Southside STEM Academy at Campostella in Norfolk, Virginia.

During 22 weeks of training and engagement, young boys and men learned their part in creating a community where women and girls are valued and the cycle of violence ends with them.

Extensive research by experts in gender-based violence prevention reveals that through education and mobilization men must play a critical role in creating a community where all women and girls are valued and safe. Only with the support of men and boys can we stop the cycle of gender-based violence.

Conference on R.E.S.T. Racial Equity & Social Transformation Conference on R.E.S.T. - Racial Equity and Social Transformation is a training ground for those interested in learning more and leaning into the effects of injustices and inequities. Through information-collaborationactivation, participants learn and build best practices with a long-term goal of building a blueprint for the transformational change needed to create an antiracist Hampton Roads.

This conference is just what's needed. The unapologetic yet compassionately collaborative energy left me feeling refreshed for the work ahead. If I could only use one word to describe the conference it would be: RESTORATIVE. Anonymous

Empowering Women Women's empowerment is a crucial aspect of promoting self-worth, decision-making abilities, and the right to influence social change. It aims to create a brighter future by empowering women to make their own decisions, pursue their passions, and achieve their dreams. By empowering women, we’re helping to reduce gender inequality, which can lead to greater economic stability and improved quality of life. Additionally, it can create an environment of respect and acceptance, which can lead to healthier relationships and stronger communities.

Counseling Services The journey from victim to survivor can be challenging to navigate on your own.

The counselors at YWCA South Hampton Roads are here to travel alongside you through the ups, downs, and challenges in the healing process. Wherever you find yourself along that journey—no matter if it is a recent trauma or something that occurred in the past—our counselors are ready to use their skill and expertise to create a safe and compassionate space for you to heal.

This program has really helped give me determination and the willpower to make me honestly feel that I can start my life over again and to be positive, not having to live in fear.

Emergency Shelter For almost forty-five years, YWCA South Hampton Roads has operated our emergency shelter, providing the ONLY place of refuge for families escaping domestic and sexual violence in the City of Norfolk. As a result, finding a vacancy in the shelter can frequently prove to be an obstacle for families who are fleeing violence.

Committed to ensuring that no individual facing imminent danger will be turned away regardless of capacity, the YWCA purchased a larger shelter in July 2019. This facility has enabled us to expand from 9 to 22 rooms, increased our shelter footprint from 3,000 to 9,500 square feet and more than doubled the capacity of clients that we are able to serve under one roof.

Survivor Stories Penny arrived to shelter with her children following a violent attack by her abuser. She worked tirelessly to save but was exited from shelter due to meeting a maximum time limit for emergency shelter with no placement in a housing program. Penny left with minimal resources and sought refuge at a hotel. These unfortunate circumstances led to another almost lethal attack, which brought her back into shelter services. She arrived in shelter highly distraught, terrified to leave the premises and in much physical pain. Penny continued to work and seek housing opportunities within her budget. Shortly after her second intake into shelter, through support from our shelter staff and victim advocacy department she felt empowered to proceed with criminal charges and a protective order. Furthermore, through her shelter case management, she qualified for placement in our Rapid Rehousing Program. Penny has identified a property, shared her story with a local property owner who is working with us to provide her with a safe and affordable option. Penny is beyond excited and grateful for this opportunity and speaks frequently of her high hopes of owning her own business in the future.

Kelsey arrived to shelter seven months pregnant with her young child tow. She came in tearful and shaken. Kelsey held visible bruising to her physical body but those were only a portion of the pain. One often can see the outside trauma, but the inside trauma takes tremendous time to heal. Through the support of shelter staff and intensive case management, Kelsey was able to begin to work through the guilt and shame she arrived with and set goals towards independence. Through generous donors, we were able to provide a baby shower and soon after her baby was born. During her post-partum recovery, her family received placement in our Rapid Rehousing Program. Along with her successful goal progression and working with our housing advocate, she moved out of shelter into her own apartment. She is now working a full-time job and caring for her children.

Norfolk Family Justice Center The Norfolk Family Justice Center is a one-stop community resource center that provides free services for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, and other forms of family violence. The Center offers crisis counseling, legal assistance, and safety planning to help victims and their families find safe and secure solutions. The Center also provides referrals to community resources, support groups and assistance filing restraining orders. It is a safe and secure space for victims of family violence to access the help they need.

Justice Served: Bayview Apartment Sexual Assaulter Convicted and Sentenced in Norfolk, VA On May 22, 2021, a women was sexually assaulted at a Bayview apartment in Norfolk, Va. She had been out drinking with friends and the next thing she remembered was awakening to being sexually abused and struggling to fully regain consciousness. She remembered his face and details about the time that she was inside the apartment, but she was too incapacitated to attempt to leave. She was eventually driven back to Virginia Beach and dropped off near her home. Several days passed before the woman fully recovered, at which point she reported her rape to the Norfolk Family Justice Center and underwent a sexual assault nurse examination.

Initially the victim was unable to identify her assailant but after the sexual assault and deaths of two other women, photos of him and his name began circulating on social media. The victim immediately recognized him and contacted Norfolk Police to identify him, and he was arrested for rape on July 16, 2021. Forensic testing of the murdered victims’ bodies and of the rape victim’s physical evidence recovery kit all revealed the presence of the attackers DNA. As the legal proceedings progressed, YWCA staff continued to provide services to the victim including PERK Accompaniment, PERK follow up services, Crisis Counseling, Law Enforcement and Court Accompaniment.

On September 16, 2022, the attacker was convicted of two counts of involuntary manslaughter and the rape and object sexual penetration of the third, surviving victim. Because of the seriousness of these crimes and the danger to the community should he be out of prison, the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office recommended the maximum possible sentences of two terms of life in prison plus 20 years to serve, all consecutive. The presiding judge concurred with the recommendation and sentenced the assailant in accordance with the Commonwealth’s recommendation.

In announcing the sentence, The Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office thanked former Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Gordon D. Fraser, Norfolk Police Special Crimes Unit Detective Calen D. Wood, the YWCA of South Hampton Roads, and involved first responders and analysts for their crucial work in this case.*

Camp Hope & Pathways 2023: A Path to Happy Campers Camp HOPE is an evidence-based program designed to inspire hope and resiliency in children exposed to domestic violence.

The program offers a traditional camp experience with various activities and an evidence-based curriculum. Camp HOPE participants learn about hope and its importance in success, connect with peers, and receive mentorship. The Pathways program, a year-long mentoring program, allows Camp HOPE children to reconnect with their peers and mentors. The program has shown consistent positive results, increasing their sense of hope, self-esteem, and connection. It helps break the cycle of violence and lead successful, fulfilling lives.

Building Trust and Connection: Doubling Camper Participation in an Amazing Summer Experience This summer we were able to double the number of campers participating in this amazing experience. We watched the returning campers welcome the newer campers with open arms and witnessed the sharing of personal stories that connected the campers and built the trust they had in one another.

As Chelsea Shaw, Children’s Services Coordinator reflected on the activities “ I remember on our second day we were at the zipline, and one camper panicked when they reached the top. They were all hooked in and ready to go, but were scared to make the leap off the platform and down the line. I watched in awe as the other campers, some who had only just met one another, cheered in sync to encourage the nervous camper. ‘This is what it’s all about,’ I thought. In that moment, they had each other. After a few moments of cheering, the camper leapt down from the platform and slid down the zipline to greet me at the end, a huge smile across their face. They had done it! And for the rest of camp, they displayed not a second of hesitancy in trying all the activities offered. They found hope.

According to Giving USA, giving was strong in 2020 and 2021 as donors rallied to help address increasing needs in a global pandemic and economic crisis and recovery, and supported efforts to advance racial justice.

While individual giving decreased, YWCA South Hampton Roads’ remained committed to ensuring our community views our effort and ability to solve big problems as essential to building safer and stronger communities for all. With longer shelter stays, the almost non-existence of deeply affordable housing, and inflation, we continue to do the work and show up for those that have been victimized and marginalized – regardless of the cost!
