Jeepney Drivers at Risk due to Palace’s PUVMP

Around 600,000 jeepney drivers and an estimated 9 million commuters were affected as the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP), a program made by the Department of Transportation of the Philippines in 2017 that proposed jeepney modernization to replace traditional jeepneys with safer, more efficient, and eco-friendly vehicles, aimed that traditional jeepneys aged 15 years or older will be phased out and

replaced by electric-powered or Euro 4-compliant vehicles.

The government has been attempting to remove jeepneys from the streets for a long time because of their diesel engines, which contribute a lot to air pollution. Drivers and operators were given until December 31 __ (year) to convert from running traditional jeepneys to minibusses based on a recommendation by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory

Board (LTFRB).

Furthermore, there have been many delays in the plan’s implementation since 2017 as thousands of drivers protested in front of the Presidential Palace demanding that the admin istration shall cancel the deadline.

According to LT FRB, owners who have not yet enrolled in the cooperative program may continue to use their jeepneys on desig nated routes for a grace

Philippine population decreases continuously

The 2022 Revision of World Population

Prospects reported that the Philippines’ annual growth rate dropped gradually from 4.51 percent in 1955 to 1.53 percent in 2024. Over time, the yearly rate of population growth has been continuously declining, and it is currently barely 1.3%.

Based on the estimations of the latest United Nations data, the current population of the Philippines is 118,380,815 and is estimated to increase by 119,106,224 on July 1, 2024.

The fertility rate of women in the Philippines also decreased by 6.4 percent as its rate by 1969, to 2.1 children per woman this 2024 due to the increased use of contraceptives and new family plan-

ning methods. Moreover, the Philippines’ population growth rate is expected to drop down in the future, but should still be substantial. By 2050, the estimated growth rate of 1.52% will have decreased by half. Meanwhile, by 2020, the population is expected to reach 110 million, and 125 million by 2030.

In addition, the World Population Prospects also recorded 6,877 births per day and 1,850 deaths per day. The population is predicted to double in 40 years, due to the 2 million people added to the population every year. The said figures might change due to factors like birth rates, migration, and other demographic dynamics.

Poverty rate of Philippines declines by 22.4% in the first semester of 2023

Statistics of the percentage of Filipinos who cannot afford basic necessities were revealed by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) in a press conference on December 23 last year, decreased by an estimated 22.4 percent or an equivalent of 25.24 million individuals in the first semester of 2023 from the previous record of 23.7 percent or 26.14 million in the first semester of 2021.

“This means that 224 out of every one-thousand Filipinos are in families with insufficient income to meet their basic food and non-food needs in the first six months of 2023,”

PSA Chief Statistician Dennis Mapa said.

Mapa stated that a family of five members would need a minimum monthly budget of ₱13,797 to meet all of

their basic needs, which would include both food and non-food products, or they would be considered poor. Meanwhile, there had been an 8.7 percent or estimated 9.79 million individuals decline in the subsistence rate or the minimum income required by a family to cover its essential needs, both food and non-food, when compared to 2021 the subsistence rate was 9.9 percent.

The poverty incidence for the first semester of 2023 was recorded at 16.4 percent, or 4.51 million people, while the subsistence incidence was recorded at 5.9 percent, or 1.62 million people, according to PSA.

Additionally, the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) had the highest poverty incidence

at 44.8 percent, while across the country, poverty incidence still decreased in 15 out of the 17 regions from 2021 to 2023, with significant decline recorded in the National Capital Region (NCR), Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, SOCCSKSARGEN, and Caraga.

Following the reports, on December 20, 2022, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos signed the next year’s ₱5.768 trillion budget, outlining the government’s plans to reduce the poverty rate to 9% before his six-year term ends in 2028, and strengthen border security, and boost the growth of the economy, by investing to create high-quality and high-paying jobs to address rising issue of vulnerable employment.

PH struggles to move up in PISA rankings

The Philippine economy is facing tough times, with its slowest growth in nine quarters reported for the second quarter of 2023, as per the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), reflecting the country’s economic challenges to global uncertainties.

periods.

Deployment of OFWs back to pre-COVID level shows lack of decent jobs

The deployment of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) back to the pre-pandemic condition showed the lack of quality jobs in the Philippines, according to Migrante International, an OFW rights group, on January 6, 2024. The group added that the information reported by Department of Migrant Workers or DMW officer-in-charge Hans Leo Cacdac, in a Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon briefing, was “not something that the Philippine government should be proud of”.

from the payment of travel tax and the airport terminal fee. Cadac also said that under the late DMW Secretary Susan Ople, who died in August 2023, their organization was able to hasten the process for deployment.

A recession, which means a long period of notso-good economic times with less money flowing and more people without jobs, is showing up in the country’s numbers, with the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which counts all the goods and services made, grew only by 4.3% from April to June 2023, shared by PSA

This is quite different from the better times seen in the second quarter of 2021 when the Philippines recovered from a tough period caused by the pandemic as now, high inflation rates, meaning prices going up, are making people spend less money, affecting many businesses. While the global community grapples with economic challenges, the Philippines now faces the critical task of implementing effective measures to address the downturn. Governments worldwide often employ a combination of fiscal and monetary policies to stimulate economic recovery during such

The implications of this economic slowdown are touching many parts of life, like businesses, jobs, and how people are doing overall. As the people in charge think about what to do next, they will likely focus on making plans to control prices, get people to spend more money, and support the economy to grow in a good way.

The coming months will be crucial for the Philippine economy as it navigates these challenging times and experts will be closely watching what happens and how the government responds, looking for signs of improvement and when things might get better.

UN Expert Highlights Ongoing Threats Against Journalists and Human Rights Defenders in the Philippines

United Nations Special Rapporteur on freedom of opinion and expression, Irene Khan, has raised concerns about the continued threats, vilification, and violence faced by journalists and human rights defenders in the Philippines, amidst growing international attention to human rights issues in the country and calls for meaningful reforms.

During her 10-day visit to the Philippines, Khan acknowledged positive signals from the new administration, including a willingness to engage in peace talks and renewed engagement with the international community, however, she emphasized that addressing the country’s deep-rooted human rights issues will require more fundamental and sustained reforms.

One major concern highlighted by Khan is the unfair branding of individuals critical of state policies as supporters, recruiters, or members of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA), putting them at increased risk of human rights abuses such

as threats, surveillance, attacks, or even unlawful killings.

Khan urged authorities to publicly denounce these “red-tagging” practices and hold any officials accountable for violations, saying that the counter-terrorism task force (NTFELCAC) by the previous Government, should be abolished for more inclusive peacebuilding platforms.

The UN Special Rapporteur also stressed that the Philippines remains one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists. According to UNESCO figures, 117 journalists have been killed in the country in the last 30 years, with 81 of those cases remaining unsolved, Khan described the killing of journalists as the most egregious form of censorship and called for expedited legal proceedings to fight against impunity and provide justice for the families of the victims. Moreover, Khan expressed concerns about the legal framework affecting freedom of expression in the Philippines and criticized the overly broad and vague definition of

terrorism in the Anti-Terrorism Act 2020, which leaves it open to abuse.

She also highlighted provisions in the Cybercrime Prevention Act and the Penal Code that criminalize libel and called for the adoption of a dedicated Human Rights Defenders law to ensure the safety and protection of journalists and human rights defenders.

During her visit, Khan met with young pre-trial detainees at the Tacloban prison, including Mariel Domequil, Alexander Philip Abinguna, and Frenchie Mae Cumpio, she expressed concern over their prolonged detention for non-bailable terrorism-related offenses and urged relevant authorities to expedite their trials with full due process.

In conclusion, the UN Special Rapporteur called on the Philippine government to continue giving the UN an important and active role in addressing impunity and building trust with civil society, emphasizing the urgency of implementing reforms and measures to protect freedom of expression and activism in the country.

Migrante also stated that “after four years since COVID-19 hit the world, the Philippines continues to fail creating decent jobs at home”. The group also backlashed Bongbong Marcos saying that the country under his regime is still not beginning to develop manufacturing and agriculture sectors and is unable to provide employment to Filipinos nationwide.

In the aforementioned briefing which was held last January 4, 2024, Cacdac stated that the department issued 2.5 million overseas employment certificates or OECs and OFW Passes in 2023. The OECs are required for all departing OFWs, which serves as their clearance to leave the country and as an exemption

As a result of the dissemination of the data given at the briefing, Migrante expressed their factual response replying that “the 2.5 million OEC and passes issued by the government translates to more than 6,800 Filipinos leaving the country each day”. They further stated that the figures simply indicate that numerous Filipinos, who are forced to leave their families in the Philippines to find a higher paying job and employment abroad, are increasing continuously.

Migrante International also criticized Cacdac’s speech saying that the officer-in-charge did not mention the increasing number of Filipinos that are victimized by illegal recruitment and human trafficking. The OFW rights group then suggested that the administration of President Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos Jr. and the DMW should “seriously’’ reconsider their uncritical celebration of the Philippine government’s labor export program.

Continuous recession challenges PH economy

The Philippine economy is facing tough times, with its slowest growth in nine quarters reported for the second quarter of 2023, as per the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), reflecting the country’s economic challenges to global uncertainties.

A recession, which means a long period of not-so-good economic times with less money flowing and more people without jobs, is showing up in the country’s numbers, with the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which counts all the goods and services made, grew only by 4.3% from April to June 2023, shared by PSA Chief Claire Dennis Mapa.

This is quite different from the better times seen in the second quarter of 2021 when the Philippines recovered from a tough period caused by the pandemic as now, high inflation rates, meaning prices going up, are making people spend less money, affecting many businesses.

While the global community grapples Qwith economic challenges, the Philippines now faces the critical task of implementing effective measures to address the downturn. Governments worldwide often employ a combination of fiscal and monetary policies to stimulate economic recovery during such periods.

Climate Change raises public alarm in Filipinos

Based on a survey conducted by Pulse Asia’s Ulat ng Bayan through face-to-face interviews last September 10 to 14, 2023, 65 percent of the respondents claimed that they had observed an important change in the local climate. The survey is said to be in line with one conducted last 2022 where 63 percent of Filipino adults also noticed the same thing in the climate.

According to the survey, 68 percent of the respondents stated

that climate change is dangerous for the environment, 69 percent said that it is threatening to the Philippines, and 71 percent agreed that climate change is harmful to themselves and their families.

Furthermore, 46 percent of the respondents connect climate change to human-made environmental destruction which was lower than the 64 percent of adults who had the same thoughts last June 2022. 32 percent responded that calamities are just natural occurrences to the

world while 21 percent believed that calamities are punishments from God to countries who have turned to evil ways.

Moreover, the respondents said that they had enough or little knowledge about the subject, about only half claimed to be sufficiently aware of climate change, showing an increase from the 34 percent of respondents who had similar thoughts last June 2022. Meanwhile, 40 percent stated that they had little knowledge about climate change.

Jose dominates DFS Scholarship Exam with 99.75 average score

After the return of face-to-face JHS Scholarship Exam, incoming Grade 7 student, Edrea Brielle C. Jose ranked first and garnered an average score of 99.75 in the Doña Felisa Scholarship Examination conducted by the University of Saint Anthony –Junior High School Department last July 27, 2023.

Jose, an alumnus of USANT – Montessori Grade School Department, stood on top of the twenty-two passers from different schools in the return of the face-to-face setup of the scholarship exam.

“Ever since Grade 6, I have started preparing myself for the Doña Felisa Scholarship Exam by reviewing our Math, Science and English book. I also did my research about the different topics on the internet,” Jose said about her preparation for the upcoming exam.

“During the day of the exam, I was nervous yet excited, because I know that I want to

be able to pass and I know that I did my best and have prepared myself for any question that will appear on the exam, of course with the help of God, the support of my family and friends, I successfully answered all the questions which I did not expect,” she added.

She also exclaimed that she did not expect gaining the top rank in the said examination because of the amount of students who are eyeing for the first spot.

“Honestly, I did not expect that I will be able to gain Top 1 but I was still hoping because I know that there are a lot of new students and they are also very smart, but I was able to do it and from that day on, I swore that I will do my very best to maintain high grades and to prioritize my academics all times,” she said.

Doña Felisa Scholarship grants its freshmen passers a 100% tuition fee benefit and free use of textbooks.

Clocks’ short and long hands spin again after an hour like the Philippines’ difficulties increase after a leader’s mistake. Reportedly, the government paid PHP1.5T of its debt from January to November 2023, leaving the Filipinos in a bittersweet feeling as there is a possibility that the government will just go in another 360-degree spin.

Over the past years, the Philippine debt has been the talk of the country. It raised concerns throughout the country as it can badly affect the lives of Filipinos, especially the ones at the bottom. The government borrows from creditors outside the country to fund its projects all over the country and give solutions to its never-ending problems. The debt that the country owes grew in the years 1962 to 1986. According to the Bureau of the Treasury (BTr), the government already paid PHP1.53T, leaving PHP14.51T as of last November. However, the debt increased 0.19% from PHP14.48T by the end of October of 2023, leading to the PHP14.51T. In total, the National Government (NG) arranged PHP1.55T as payment for the whole year of 2023.

Each and every citizen of the country carried this burden and still carries it until today. According to a website called Oxfam Digital Repository, the unpaid money can lead to low income, marginalization, and wasted lives of the Filipinos. Working citizens don’t get the amount that matches

Ties of the Present and Future

Change is inevitable. In a hypothetical scenario, we can imagine a woman living in a universe that is limited to only one dimension. In such a universe, she would be able to move only in one direction and would have no chance of turning back. The possibility of exploring new paths and making different choices would be non-existent. However, if we were to place her in a three-dimensional universe, her opportunities to explore and make different choices would become limitless. In such a universe, she would have the freedom to move in multiple directions, and her choices would no longer be limited.

It’s important to recognize that every step we take, and every decision we make, has an impact on the future. The choices we make today have a ripple

effect on those who come after us. It’s a daunting thought, but it’s essential to remember that we are the ones shaping the world for the next generation. Ignoring this fact would be foolish, and it would show complete negligence towards our economy, which jeopardizes the thought of having a better and brighter future. It is an infinite chain that will endlessly flow, and if we don’t recognize and take action, every single person will suffer.

The Philippines is currently facing a multitude of problems, including issues with our economy, politics, and continuous social problems that older generations have been unable to resolve. All of these problems are connected, and if we do not take action, the consequences will be dire. Our actions now will impact future generations, and if we fail to address these problems, we will simply pass on an endless cycle of suffering to our children.

their hard work and dedication to their jobs, like farmers. They are the main providers of rice, yet they only eat once or twice a day, some don’t even have food on their tables. Farmers are also deprived of their lands, the reason why some of them can’t earn anymore. The leaders of the country should listen and find better ways to help them as they are the people of the nation, they chose to serve instead of giving them the wrong options.

Campaigns during election periods are done to capture citizens’ heart, some running officials will give off flowery promises to people and when they get elected, they will take the advantage to capture the country’s funds and use it for their own gain. Those funds are the people’s money, it should go to projects and foundations that will support the people. There are some cases that the real and genuine official would lose because others would bury their name and intentions. Citizens should be careful who they vote for, they should find out first if they have good intentions and if they are capable and deserving for the position. Wrong people seated in politics will only continue to burden the whole country.

According to President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. in his recent “Bagong Pilipinas” kick-off rally on January 28, 2024, “Bagong Pilipinas, Bawal ang Waldas!” This means that in this new Philippines, wasting

360-Degree Spin

money is forbidden. The money of the people is only for what they need and what the country needs. He also mentioned that lazy officials have no place in politics which is correct. Officials are to serve the country, its people, make worthy decisions, think of the welfare and safety of the countrymen. It is their duty.

The main reasons why the Philippines is in situations like this are because of the system and the people. This is the product of reckless decisions that may grow into something bigger. A wrong system with the wrong people is always a bad match. It is time to hear the people’s calls during rallies or protests for justice, change, and development of the country instead of driving them away like mere pests. The citizens only ask for things that everybody in the country deserves.

There are many sectors which the government can focus on such as the agricultural and educational sector, these are sectors that contribute a big portion to the future of the country. Agriculture is known as the backbone of the economy, while education shapes Filipinos to become good leaders in the future with their knowledge and skills. Unfortunately, these sectors aren’t really focused on a lot. From time to time, a part of the country weakens due to poor management. Poor management is the aftermath of poor choice of people.

Clocks are meant to last forever, identify the time, and one of the

oldest inventions of humans. However, issues like the Philippine debt should be taken care of perfectly and needs everyone’s attention. It is something to be worried about as it affects the citizens, their lifestyles, and many different sectors that may affect the country’s future. The government should use the funds wisely and not for their own gain. Many Filipinos are suffering nowadays, spending it on them is a good use for the money. They should also improve the system, as for the citizens, they should vote for the right and deserving individuals. Though they are showing efforts, it doesn’t mean that the country is getting better and healthier. As long as there are wrong officials seated, there would be no change at all. And without change, the Philippines would just stay in the same cycle. Clocks are meant to last forever, but these issues that Filipinos are currently experiencing such as the debt, shouldn’t. It is time for change, it is time to end the 360-degree spins.

Re-assessing Finance for Health

Many live have been lost ever since the global pandemic coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) entered our world. In the early months of it, rising infection rates, emergency field hospitals and pervasive uncertainty caused panic which immensely affected the economy of the world and made people suffer continuous financial hardship in their households. Moreover, when the virus reached vast numbers of people in just a short span of time, it also prompted the decline of stock markets, scarcity of supplies and products, and governments losing hundreds of billions of revenues resulting in lockdowns and health concerns about in-person interactions. In turn, it made it more diffi-

cult for grieving families to survive day to day lives. This kind of infectious disease puts life expectancy at risk which creates a more good reason to avail life insurance if we are concerned about the threat that is perceived as a destruction to our physical safety. Catalyzed by panic buying, people then were always willing to share their hoarded resources and basic necessities within their relatives but are too reluctant to share it to other people because of the need to prioritize and secure their individual development first. Other people were left subjected to danger because of it which then led the population to decrease considering their vulnerability to catch the virus and the amount of hunger they have been through. The simplicity of life insurance’s principle is practical in public because we just have to think about a sum in mind that we want an insurance policy for and this amount should be able to cover the expenses of our family members in case of an unfortunate event. In addition to that, availability and wider adoption of digital

services across many different consumer-facing industries have become broader. Therefore, it is much easier to access life insurance for those who are in remote areas. It is a very good investment to consider because it protects our family from the potentially devastating financial losses that could result if something happened to us. The policy includes providing financial security, helping to pay off debts, and any medical or living expenses, specially for funeral or final expenses. Furthermore, life insurances can also be applied to numerous circumstances depending on whom we entitle it for.

With the help of life insurance, tackling large financial problems can be minimized and so is the burden of the beneficiaries in case of a sudden accident. Considering this in our financial plan provides stability and normalcy in our children’s lives, too. It not only supports our long and short-term financial needs but can also be helpful in case of a sudden need of an additional source of funds.

Discontinuation of the K-12 law or the Enhance Basic Education Act in State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) and Local Universities and Colleges (LUCs) with regards to the end of contract between the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), is what educators, and students are concerned for. The implementation had made many people develop regrets if all had gone to waste.

Starting the 2024, CHED orders SUCs and LUCs to terminate accepting enrollees for Senior High School programs (SHS) that was supposed to be last 2021, but was extended because of Covid-19. This was the result of the rational issue of the SHS program not having an adequate curriculum upon just asking CHED for assistance on releasing the development. Moreover, according to DepEd, there are about 17,000 grade 11 students that have enrolled in SUCs and LUCs. By the decision, it stressed those students of where they would find another university that will also cost them. This issue does not only apply to the students, but also the teachers who will take charge of handling the students. In a statement, Teachers Dignity Coalition (TDC) and Samahan ng Progresibong Kabataan (SPARK) said that by the process of transferring displaced SHS students, accommodating the learners will be the main concern. Adding more students means that the classes will be congested and this can lead to overburdening the teachers.

Another concern is the consideration for those students who chose to enroll to SUCs and LUCs that are near their home residence. They will be obliged to find other universities that can take them miles away from their residences, which will meet additional cost to their families. They might be handing out vouchers, but they should also consider discussing it first to know what they are going to do with universities who does not take them anymore. However, come to think of it, most students who are expected to graduate academic year 2023-2024 will realize that

nothing much has changed with the two added years they had to be put under the law.

Senior High School was added by law to the basic education curriculum in 2013 to enhance the employability and readiness of the high school graduates for college or to go directly to entrepreneurship, regardless of the efforts, graduates often found little value of the two additional years to making a difference from when the law was not yet published. As said by some educators, they highly agree to the discontinuation of the program for they also found it impractical. The reality of the curriculum is that what instructors teach in state universities, is also taught in SHS which is not supposed to. And according to what CHED Chairman Prospero De Vera III pointed out in an interview, basic education is DepEd, not CHED.

The K to 12 law had cost high school graduates two more years to spend money on for the sake of “better education.” Any parent or guardian would do anything to acquire a better education for their child, but what mattered most, was in the past before the passage of the law, the quality of college and university was much better where one got a degree, meaning that it may be a waste of money for the family. The two years did not ensure that the graduate would be given a higher wage, something they could have gained if they used the two years working. Importantly, there are still many of them who are struggling to compete for overseas jobs against other colleges and universities in other countries without even going for a masters or doctorate degree, which is another proof that developing the program was not that effective.

There is nothing wrong with changing the law in the past because the government was just trying to contribute to the future of the country the future of the Filipinos. Their contract has ended and the rest should be followed. However, they should not keep it to themselves and consider those who are also affected in their agreement. The discontinuation should be managed properly and not whimsically, the development should go through serious deliberation before implementing it, or else all of the efforts would really go to waste or in other words, the law will be useless.

Established Connections Under Diminished Commitments

but apparently, relationships, too. These lyrics capture the exact concept of “situationships” of Gen Z which increasingly has been normalized. Despite the confusion, uncertainty, and “Ano ba tayo?” questions, should situationships still be normalized?

“Nahihilo(nahihilo), nalilito,” a famous line from the song Migraine of Moonstar88 depicts the roller coaster emotions in situations and experiences of teenagers, mainly Generation Z. In this new era, it’s no wonder that not only technologies evolve,

Born between 1997 and 2012, commonly referred to as Gen Z or Zoomers, this generation has deviated from traditional relationship norms, leading to a unique perspective on love and commitment. This shift has given rise to "situationships," romantic entanglements devoid of labels and commitment. While there is a connection, the lack of

boundaries and definition complicates matters. Situationships rely heavily on mutual understanding, with no clear assurances for the future. However, this lack of definition presents challenges. The absence of clear boundaries and labels leads to confusion and uncertainty. Unlike in relationships, where rights and expectations are established, the blurred lines of situationships make it difficult to recognize acceptable behavior or entitlement to certain feelings. Nonetheless, the dynamics of situationships hinge on mutual understanding, as individuals navigate their roles and expectations within the relationship.

Academic bargain The Price of Craving Academic Validation

“High Grades cutie!” is not just a statement; it is a beacon of manifestation that desperate students hold onto tightly as they await the nail-biting release of grades at the end of a grading period or academic year. But beyond the glittering facade of these words punctures a deeper truth: the fear of failure and rejection. Academic Validation can be described as relating one’s sense of self-worth and their academic performance. It is where educational accomplishments become deeply intertwined with a student’s identity, satisfaction, and self-confidence. Is craving this validation a necessary evil or is it a limiting factor that holds students back from true growth?

In the labyrinth of academic life, students often find themselves entangled in a web of expectations and desires. A strong need to satisfy one’s academic validation is rooted in a combination of societal expectations, personal ambition, and the structure of educational systems. In the status quo, academic success is highly valued and often equated with personal worth and future success such as a dream college and a well-paying career. The current structure of our country’s educational system further reinforces the importance of academic validation with its emphasis on grades and standardized testing. Additionally, our country also persists in a deeply ingrained cultural norm that places a high value on academic achievements, often viewed as a reflection of family honor

and social standing. Factors like economic stability, high parental expectations, peer pressure, personal ambition, and scholarships also contribute crucially to this idea. Together, these factors create an intricate network of influences that drive students to seek academic validation. The pressure to excel, not just for oneself but for the expectations of others, can be overwhelming and suffocating. Let’s face it. Nothing is ever really achieved without any kind of investment or sacrifice, whether it be valuable time or effort. However, some students relentlessly strive for unattainable academic heights, driven by an insatiable thirst for validation.

In a News 5 report from 2021, an SK Kagawad was found to have falsified credentials and documents including her admission, graduation picture, grades, and alleged awards from the University of the Philippines – Manila when she was invited to deliver a speech at her elementary alma mater’s recognition rites. After the revelation, she stated that she simply wanted her mother and the people in her barangay to be proud of her ‘achievements’. Her act of dishonesty sets a poor example for young students who may look up to individuals in positions of authority. While it is understandable to want to make one’s family and community proud, resorting to deception is never the right approach. It is crucial to address the root causes of this behavior to prevent similar incidents in the future. The thirst for academic validation, combined with the aforementioned factors, may have contributed to this unfortunate situation. Ultimately, the pursuit of academic validation should be a positive and empowering experience. In this age, this strive becomes a consuming quest. In some cases, students turn to studying for long hours without breaks, enduring sleepless nights, and even skipping meals to accom-

Some Gen Z, unsurprisingly, hate the concept of situationship, while others enjoy the thrill of it. Regardless of those experiences, they share the same thought: situationships should not be normalized. According to some Gen Z, you can like someone and still not be ready for a relationship. In contrast, there are voices that contend that if you really like the person, you will disregard all your reasons and won’t settle for a situationship. If you don’t want a situationship, don’t agree to a no-label setup. Situationship is a choice, and it’s either love and commitment or leave people alone. But some formed the idea

of “better this than nothing.” There are a lot of lonely people who are willing to settle for a situationship to feel a shred of love or companionship. Normalization of situationship is on a case-to-case basis. Communication always works– it’s on both of you. True connection and fulfillment can only be found when both parties are on the same page. The normalization of situationships in Gen Z is indeed unique, reflecting the evolving attitudes towards love and commitment in modern society.

plish performance tasks, papers, essays, and assignments. These unhealthy habits then lead to stress, anxiety, and burnout; neglecting other important aspects of life such as personal development, relationships, as well as physical and mental health. With this, is relating your self-worth to your academic accomplishments necessarily bad? Well, not particularly. This strive for validation is dependent on how it is approached and balanced with other priorities.

In an ideal world, academic validation would be a positive force that motivates and inspires students to reach their full potential and propel them forward. In reality, this is not always the case. Aside from its mental and physical toll, this hunger can create a climate of competition and comparison, where students feel the need to constantly prove themselves and outperform their peers; losing the intrinsic motivation and passion for learning.

A holistic approach is needed to address this issue among students. Students should recognize that the emphasis of academic life should not be solely on grades but on fostering a genuine passion for learning. Grades remain an important aspect of academic evaluation but they should not overshadow the importance of the learning process. Schools must take immediate measures to ensure an environment that values both academic achievement and personal well-being. By this, we create a healthier and more sustainable educational system as well as a more positive and empowering academic environment for students. In the moments of struggle and doubt, in the triumphs and setbacks, we find the true measure of our worth. And perhaps, in the end, it’s not the grades that matter, but the lessons learned, relationships built, and the growth we undergo along the way.

Reaching the deepest depths

In the massive expanse of the digital sphere, there is concealed information, a parallel reality where shadows and secrets grow. The dark webs of social media, an underbelly of the internet hidden from the prying eyes of mainstream platforms. A subversive society based on anonymity and dishonesty develops in the darkest corners and encrypted channels. But what lies beneath the surface? What stories go unnoticed in this secretive world?

The dark web differs from traditional social media platforms in that it provides users with complete anonymity and privacy. Unlike public posts on traditional social media platforms, the dark web allows users to share their thoughts and feelings in virtual secret societies where like-minded people can connect. The appeal of the dark web stems from the ability to speak freely without fear of being judged or punished, which is not always possible on traditional social media platforms where content is heavily monitored and filtered. As users connect and share content openly, dark webs quietly exploit vulnerabilities, becoming breeding grounds for cybercriminals.

As stated in the blog titled “Social Media Platforms Bring the Dark Webs Closer than You Think” “cybercriminals exploit the vast user base of popular social media platforms to camouflage their

activities, creating a parallel space where malicious transactions and information exchange occur discreetly.” This statement emphasizes the concerning reality of cybercrime in today’s digital era. The importance of this issue cannot be overstated, as social media platforms have become inextricably linked to the daily lives of millions of users worldwide. The impact of cybercrime on these platforms goes beyond to include privacy breaches, identity theft, and the spread of fake news and disinformation. Decoding this complicated nature of cybercrime on social media platforms is not only informative, but also a key to creating a more secure online space for all users.

The idea of the socalled “dark web” is shrouded in anonymity, allowing illicit activities to flourish beyond the reach of the authorities. These platforms become breeding grounds for the spread of hatred, harmful content, and unlawful activity, with serious consequences for people as well as society as a whole. The dark webs found within various social media platforms bring up an environment of anxiety and distrust, corroding the foundation of the society of technology. The dark side gives a serious threat that requires attention. It is much needed for society to acknowledge the gravity of these issues and work in order to build a safer space for all.

Defending the Decorations

In the rooms of our school, the walls can be seen filled with posters, visual aids, and decorations. These decorations usually act their purpose, to help brighten the mood of the classroom and eliminate the monotony of the classroom. However, their placement on our walls can come under scrutiny, especially since at times, they can act as distractions during crucial class time.

Lowering the BAR

Most of the time, other students place posters and flyers and attach them in classrooms and on school ground walls as a medium for advertisement or announcements for school events or student business. This helps act in getting the knowledge and sharing it among the student body. Important announcements for future school events such as the one during the USANT Foundation Week, posters were crucial in promoting businesses among the grounds and for events such as the IQ Blitz and The Cosplay Contest. These were posted almost everywhere, and they have served their purpose, allowing everyone to be informed of what was happening around.

Decorations in classrooms and hallways can help give life to the otherwise monotone colors of peach and maroon in

our walls and floors. Albeit, there is a downside, as sometimes there can be too many posters that it can be compared to Times Square. Too much visual clutter can serve as a distraction in the student’s mind and take away from precious class time. Unnecessary junk can pile up after the events take place causing more workload for the staff in USANT. The most effective solution for this dilemma is to add boundaries and rules for the use of posters and decorations that can take away focus but still allow the spirit and creativity of students to thrive.

Challenging the Standards

Today’s society thrives on a variety of opinions and perspectives, and so a question arises: should we start teaching children to not accept all opinions? The benefit of letting children to not let them accept other people’s opinions is that in doing so, it teaches the child to know which is which and helps them think of an opinion that can be comfortable for themselves.

First of all, these children are young. If we initiate in teaching them to accept every opinion a person says to them, they have nothing else to defend. Instead, they have nothing to do but agree to their statement that they believe in this ‘and that and eventu-

ally trash their own opinion and not question anything.

Do you realize how much this could affect the child as they grow old? This is why we need to teach them how to think critically at a young age.

Secondly, opinions tend to have an impact on life. Opinions help us decide on where to be in the future.

Other people’s opinions should not be sometimes agreed to, for you have your own. This affects a person’s self-esteem and leads them to overthink it all. Most importantly, agreeing and disagreeing with opinions helps us share our perspectives and mindsets with other people. it allocates us on where our life is and how we see the world. When children start to disagree

with other’s opinions, they’ll learn how to regard other people’s feelings and perspectives while having an opinion of their own.

With my opinion being said, I agree with the idea of teaching children to not accept all opinions. not all people have the same perspective and neither opinions. As Harlan Ellison says, “You are not entitled to your opinion. You are entitled to your informed opinion. No one is entitled to be ignorant.” If you really want to understand a person’s opinion, try to ask them for further details on why they think so. It’s okay to disagree with other opinions and have an opinion of your own.

The Philippines is known to have high standards in terms of job requirements, due to this, unemployment rate causes to increase and employers underestimate the unemployment rate in the Philippines by making it harder for job seekers to achieve the job requirements of entry level jobs by imposing unreasonable and high standards in exchange for minimum wage income. This mismatch between the expectations placed on workers and the compensation they receive is not only unjust but also unsustainable.

With a 3.6% rate of unemployment in the Philippines, unemployment remains an issue to millions of Filipinos— a key indicator of the weaknesses of the Philippine economy. One factor that causes unemployment is the high standards that employers and companies set or unreasonable job requirements that are not necessary for the job which they are applying to. Instead of focusing on the skills and capabilities of the applicant or job seeker, the requirements are focused on a different matter. The glaring controversial issues of Potato Corner, a global Philippine franchise known for its flavored

fries, went viral on social media in the month of August 2023 for its “Miss Universe” level of job qualifications. Offended reactions from the netizens were prevalent. It not only ignites discrimination, but it underscores the job market struggles. Job requirements should not be offensive and discriminatory. This highlights the absurdity of expecting applicants to possess advanced degrees or years of experience for roles that offer little in terms of financial compensation or career advancement. It’s a reminder of the need for employers to reassess their hiring standards and adopt a more inclusive approach that values skills, potential, and diverse experiences over unreasonable qualifications.

The reputation of the Philippines for high job standards has contributed to an increase in unemployment rates. This discrepancy between severe requirements and insufficient compensation highlights a systemic issue that demands urgent attention. Employers must recognize the detrimental impact of these disparities and take steps to revise their hiring criteria. Every Filipino should have access to meaningful employment opportunities.

Silent Struggles of the Shadows

In the family dynamics, as a child, it’s either on the three: first born, middle, or last born. Positioned between the first born and the youngest, middle child has a unique set of challenges, often characterized by feelings of neglect and overshadowing.

Growing up as a middle child means constantly

competing for attention and recognition amidst the milestones of their siblings. With the firstborn typically setting the standard and the youngest receiving special treatment as the baby of the family, the middle child can feel marginalized, undervalued, and overlooked. This sentiment is further aggravated by societal stereotypes that

portray middle children as the forgotten or least favorite child. Experiences from these middle children vary widely, but they share a common feeling of being overlooked and overshadowed by their siblings. Often, the only time they receive attention is when they excel academically. Their achievements in school become a

means of validation, offering a glimpse of recognition in an otherwise overshadowed existence, the reason why most middle children find their validation and worth in achievements. Parents should validate the experiences of middle children and provide them with the support, care, attention, and acknowledgment they

deserve and need. It’s a struggle often overshadowed by the louder narratives of their siblings. From navigating the complexities of family dynamics to seeking validation through academic achievements, middle children endure a journey marked by incompleteness.

Positive relationships can enhance emotional well-being, while negative relationships can contribute to mental health challenges. Recognizing the impact of these relationships on our mental health underscores the importance of creating healthy connections and seeking support when needed to promote well-being.

Behind Bars for Justice

In the vibrant tapestry of Philippine politics, Leila De Lima emerges as a beacon of unwavering dedication and a guardian of justice. Hailing from a family steeped in the rich tradition of political service, she has not merely followed in their footsteps but has forged her own indomitable path.

Leila De Lima, an attorney and prominent figure in Filipino politics, created a harmony of the chords of human rights and the rule of law. She had previously worked as a public prosecutor, and was appointed as the head of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) in the Philippines in 2008. She investi- gated numerous human rights breaches during her work and made an effort to hold those involved accountable.

In 2010, she was ap- pointed as the Sec- retary of the Department of Justice (DOJ) under the administration of former President Benigno Aquino III. As the head of the DOJ, she fought for changes and corruption within the agency, gaining her a reputation as a brave leader for justice.

However, De Lima’s political career changed when she became a prominent critic of President Rodrigo Duterte’s administra-

tion. In 2016, she launched an investigation into extrajudicial murders associated with Duterte’s drug campaign, which led to her arrest and detention on drug trafficking and related charges. Several human rights agencies and nations have raised alarm about the allegations against De Lima, describing them as politically motivated and in tended to silence opposition. Several advocacy groups have campaigned for her release, claiming that her detention violates her human rights.

Despite her being imprisoned De Lima continued to promote human rights, justice, and the rule of law via written remarks, interviews, and letters. Her case has received international at tention, sparking arguments about democracy, human rights, and political persecution in the Philippines.

The Scorching Entrails of Heat

...Continuation from Page 1...

It feels like a thick shroud of torrid. But beyond this, there is a hidden incandescent reason that will tell how domineering our weather can be; the heat index. What exactly is this enigmatic and puzzling thing that will determine the temperature? Beyond its numerical representation, is it crucial? The heat index is what temperature does the human body feel when relative humidity is mixed with air temperature. It is a vital weather indicator that has a crucial role in the human body’s comfort. As the humidity intensifies and affects the human body, the risk of heat-related illnesses escalates too. The heat index is truly not just numbers; it is how we discern heat in our body. A high heat index can lead to heat-related illnesses such as dehydration, heat rash, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke. These conditions may lead to life-threatening and dangerous situations if not overtaken and addressed properly. Hence, it is very important to drink lots of water, seek a proper air conditioning, and avoid going outside or doing much exhausting activities during periods of high

heat index. Aside from health concerns, heat index can also have a significant impact on the environment and economy. Industries that are particularly susceptible to extreme heat such as agriculture, construction, and outdoor recreation should limit hours of work and activities outside as the risk of heatstroke arises. Because of the high heat index, human productivity decreases, and workers may face heat-related illnesses as heat wraps around their bodies and the thick air surrounds us. Have you ever wondered why is it so hot? Or why do we have so a high heat index? Well, one of the biggest reasons is climate change. At this point, global temperature rises because of climate change. A lot of places in the world suffers from extreme heat, hindering individuals and communities. Having knowledge and understanding about the effects of a high heat index became increasingly crucial to help you for your safety and health. Applying strategies to adapt to changing climate and gradually increase the possibility of getting heat-related illnesses is a good move. First, the biggest countries that contribute and

produce large amounts of greenhouse gas emissions such as China and the United States should decrease their use of it. Second, factories should avoid continuous usage and burning of fossil fuels. Third, urban greening should be applied. So, as an individual, you can also prevent getting heat-related illnesses by staying hydrated, wearing light and loose-fitting clothes, and if ever you are outside, stay in a shady place and as much as possible, bring a cooling device like a fan.

As the heat rises day by day, let us be more aware of our surroundings. Summer may be fun but sometimes it can also be dangerous. Always stay informed and take precautions to stay safe during heatwaves. Summer brings joy to everyone as the thought of going to the beach and having fun with your loved ones. But, we should always remember that we have to also make sure for our safety. Our skin may burn because of the heat but our hearts also burn because of excitement and joy during this season.

A Battle One Must Fight

Stepping onto a stage or speaking up in front of others can be incredibly nerve-wracking. The stuttering, sweating, and mental blocks that accompany such moments can feel overwhelming. But why does this happen? What makes us freeze in the spotlight, feeling as though our very life force is draining away?

The culprit? Anxiety, specifically social anxiety. It’s a powerful, ongoing fear of being judged by those who surround us. Typically affecting shy, awkward, and introverted individ-

Her strength and determination in the face of adversity have made her a symbol of resistance to perceived injustices and a rallying point for people fighting for human rights and democracy.

center of attention. For them, navigating crowds or being the center of attention becomes an ordeal, inviting the dreaded onslaught of social anxiety. It’s during these moments that the anxiety strikes, leading to panic attacks, moments of paralysis, and the nagging fear of humiliation become familiar companions in such situations, leading to a cascade of physical reactions like blushing, sweating, and trembling. Today’s youth, in particular, grapple with the overwhelming weight of social anxiety. When left unaddressed, it can spiral into depression, highlighting the critical need for proactive mental health care. But how can one break free from the shackles of such debilitating thoughts?

Almost all people experience anxiety, and while this may be inevitable, there are strategies to conquer it. Challenging negative thoughts is one such approach. By consciously replacing pessimistic notions with positive ones, individuals can gradually chip away at the grip of anxiety.

When you sense anxiety creeping up, concentrate on breathing slowly and deeply. Rapid, shallow breathing is a common occurrence when we’re anxious, but it often worsens the symptoms. Pause to connect with your breath, letting it expand your belly and chest. Just a few deep breaths can significantly alter how you’re feeling. Additionally, gradually exposing oneself to social situations can help build confidence. Starting small, with low-pressure interactions among peers, allows for a gentle easing into social settings, expanding comfort zones over time. Choosing supportive and safe environments further aids in reducing anxiety, fostering a sense of connection and security. However, this journey is not without its hurdles. Doubts may creep in, questioning the purpose of change and the efforts required. However, recognizing the profound impact of our choices on both body and mind underscores the importance of making informed decisions. By performing these proactive steps to address social anxiety, individuals can pave the way for a brighter, anxiety-free future.

Using What’s Ours

Language plays a crucial role in communication. But how can we communicate without knowing what language the other is speaking? This kind of problem results in this big, unsettling barrier that Filipinos have to deal with, wherein native language speakers and Tagalog speakers have to communicate. Knowing that language and culture are intertwined with each other, this means that when a language is dying the culture is also fading away slowly, it is almost like gradually diminishing to the point that speakers of the dying language no longer use it.

The main problem with having this kind of barrier in a country like the Philippines is that it hinders effective communication and understanding among its diverse population. With the Philippines having over 180 languages and dialects spoken across the archipelago and almost 96 percent of it are

indigenous or native wherein most of it are endangered and slowly fading away, people from different regions may struggle to communicate with each other, leading to misunderstandings, limited access to services, and social isolation. This can impede educational and economic opportunities, exacerbate inequalities, and hinder social cohesion and national unity. Furthermore, there are only limited resources to teach people in local areas, like textbooks and teachers who are willing to provide their knowledge to children, teens, or even adults who weren’t given enough education to understand the Filipino and their own mother tongue. Cultural distinction also plays a crucial role, as language is inextricably linked with culture. Cultural variations, informal phrases, and nonverbal communication all have an impact on learning. What is polite or appropriate in one culture may be offensive or confusing in another, resulting in

miscommunication and misunderstanding. Just like words that have different meanings in ours and theirs.

To overcome this barrier, we need to take concrete action. While honoring and protecting regional languages, we should concentrate on enhancing Filipino and Dialects language instruction in schools; introducing or encouraging the subject Mother Tongue to be a one of the major subjects in public and private schools since the dialects and native languages are slowly fading away. Ensuring high-quality education in every community will improve learning for all. More books and qualified language instructors are also necessities. Respect for linguistic diversity and establishing equitable language guidelines are crucial. We ought to promote the use of dialects in communication between speakers of various languages. By taking these actions, effective communication and inclusivity can be fostered across the nation.

PARALYZED

To voice out when paralyzed because of something is a struggle, the ability to shout or even cry for help becomes impossible. An unseen force looms, constraining and suppressing them as if they are being held back―they are deprived of freedom. Every movement of their pen and paper is nearly impossible, even the slightest movement is deadly. Each day unfolds as a threat, every day is a battleground for the journalists and these unseen forces that are attempting to stifle their voices.

With a strong commitment to truth, relevance, and accuracy, journalists persevere in the midst of adversity. They are the eyes and ears of the public, lurking through each crevice of our world to deliver narratives that will educate, inspire, and inform. They also navigate through the darkest aspects of our society, in which they will uncover the buried truth and unravel the deception created through the abused power. The job of a journalist is not for the faint-hearted; having to undertake risks shows their commitment to their countrymen and the country itself, nonetheless, one thing is certain: being a journalist is death-dealing.

It is a perilous profession, as the saying goes. To unearth the truth is a pursuit for the journalists, however, in exchange for this pursuit, is their only safety. It is a risk that is not easy to take, one that anyone wouldn’t willingly take. In a world full of atrocious cruelties, where kidnapping, harassment, cyber violence, and killings occur, they are one of the victims of these

VOICES FOR TRUTH

cruelties—the journalists who are simply doing their job for the country. Every year is a deadly year for them. According to the data compiled by the Committee to Protect Journalists or CPJ, 2022 is a lethal year for the press, with the number of killings increasing drastically. In the year 2022, 67 journalists and press workers were deprived of life. It represents at least a 50% increase from the year 2021. The surge in these incidents was prompted by a large number of journalists killed while shedding light on the war in Ukraine, and the killings in Latin America contribut- ed to the substantial surge. There is just no safe zone for journalists, but this does not discourage their bursting voices for truth.

However, these occurrences instilled terror in not only the public but also in the other journalists. It formed a fear of covering controversial topics like corruption, abuse of authority, and protests or rallies. With this, it can have a detrimental effect on both freedom of expression and information conveyance. It may also eventually affect the public’s right to know.

One’s voice is a potent instrument in combating injustice and in wanting for a just and equitable world. Nobody will ever have the right to impede journalists from seeking the truth. Protect the press against the unseen forces that are attempting to paralyze their voices, as losing journalists means the loss of a well-informed society.

Shrinking Size, Incredible Price

“They

wished for it to end, but it ended up being just a wish.”

As the years pass, we discover changes and developments in our surroundings. What really hinders our economic development? Our country is one of the examples in which we suffer from a huge hindrance to our economic development. In fact, this issue is not resolved yet; this issue is shrinkflation. What is shrinkflation? Shrinkflation is the process of reducing the size or amount of a product while the price remains the same or slightly augmented, which happens mainly in the food and bever-

age industries. Given this, we forebear buying enough stocks of practical and primary needs for our daily lives. And if we can’t resolve this, people might suffer from hunger, hindering their ability to live a normal life.

The Philippines has been suffering from inflation. And because of this, a lot of small business owners and families are now affected. Increasing the price of the products while their sizes are shrinking has given consumers headaches. This made it possible for low-income families in unprivileged areas to come up with the decision to commit crimes. Because of widespread poverty and because they couldn’t afford to buy food, they chose to engage in robbery, stealing, and pickpocketing because of the

Luminance:A Teacher’s Duty

The academe is, in concept, an avenue for newfound knowledge. Moreover, a more in-depth perspective suggests that it also fosters individual growth: building morals, foundations of individuality and identity, and collaborations between peers and other individuals. However, students do not just learn these through solo sessions or by nature, a guiding light illuminates their childlike mind—fostering learner’s growth in a multitude of ways: perspectives, ethics, and behavior. These lights are what we then call teachers—a light taking the form of a human.

Mr. Jenri O. Azuela, the current adviser of the central student organization of the Junior High School (JHS) Department of the University of Saint Anthony (USANT), and the current area chairperson of the Filipino Department of the JHS Department, was recently able to bag the JHS Model Teacher award during the University-wide Teachers’ Day Celebration of USANT held on October 6, 2023. In an interview, Azuela described his nomination as a major deal—considering that he has only been teaching at the university for only five years.

He recalled his best memories of being both an adviser and a friend to his students and colleagues, respectively. He recollected memoirs of noticing students’ willingness to complete and participate in classroom activities and then forwarding the main competency and goal through a motivational and entertainment-style way of teaching. Furthermore, he looked back on maximizing and realizing the potential of student leaders through organizing various school-based or community-based activities. Outlining the hope of creating future leaders, Azuela continued to emphasize the thought of building camaraderie by the

desperation and hunger running through their system. However, they are not the only ones having difficulties and pressure. The rising rate of inflation is also causing problems for students as they have to pay more for requisite items such as food, tuition fees, transportation, and school supplies. As a result, it hinders their ability to afford quality education, preventing them from dreaming bigger.

This problem is still questionable for how come it hasn’t ended yet. We have been suffering from it for a lot of years now and it still remains the same; torturing people. If we do not act as soon as possible, it will be extremely difficult and laborious for the government and us to stop the rate of inflation and shrinkflation.

According to a recent

study by The Philippine Statistics Authority, the country’s inflation rate decreased to 2.8 percent in January 2024 from 3.9 percent in December 2023 and 8.7 percent during the same period last year. This is the lowest recorded since the 2.3 percent inflation rate registered in October 2020. Because of this, the government, including the citizens, is hoping that the country’s inflation rate will de crease more in the coming years so that the development of this country will be possible in order for us to live a life where we are allowed to dream big, with out hesitation, and without trampling others.

In conclusion, shrinkflation serves as one of the steering factors of inflation as it impacts consumers’ ability

to purchase necessities. Inflation erodes our power to buy enough commodities according to our budget. As prices rise and shrinkflation emerges, people experience a lack and shortage of food and even hoard products. If the government doesn’t causing to end up just a wish.

concept of sharing and building ideas with one another—as opposed to an individual-esque approach of planning. Sharing the theme of team-building in an office environment, Azuela then recalled his memories of when he was together with his colleagues. “Magaan ang trabaho kung masaya kayo ng mga katrabaho mo.”, Azuela said. This young mentor never desired to be labeled as a “model teacher nominee” nor the title of “model teacher”. He described his lifestyle as simply completing his tasks humbly and sincerely. Azuela expressed his lifestyle to forward personal growth—collecting individual sustainability and development. He took note of a simple motto and then apprised his students of doing an individual’s part then waiting for the goodness that comes after.

Azuela offered this prestigious award as a tribute to the Almighty God for his utmost guidance and his JHS Family. He thanked his colleagues for helping him from his humble beginnings to the present—all while forwarding academics, students’ needs, and activities.

He emphasized that poverty was the leading motivation for pursuing and completing his bachelor’s degree in education, yet he also quoted his high school teach ers as being his own light of following the footsteps of being an educator. Azuela then told Yraga/Amudyong that, during the blight of poverty, teaching was just a way to uplift and empower their social standing. However, he now regards this profession as both a destiny and a mission—a mission, as the light, to be the guide of others.

Azuela believes that all teachers are model teachers. Concluding, he stated “Happy teachers’ day, everyday is teachers’ day. Isang saludo para sa mga guro ng bansang Pilipinas.”

A SOLIDARITY FROM BEYOND

Fully aware of the consequences that accompany each step they take, they persist in venturing into the unknown. Despite the ache of yearning and the isolating pangs of loneliness, their unyielding spirit transcends borders, triumphing over even the most formidable challenges. Amid solitude and challenges, the OFWs’ enthusiasm shines like a beacon of resilience. With nothing but a burning determination, they weather the storms of loneliness, adapting to new environments and forging connections in places far from the warmth of their native homes.

Overseas Filipino Workers or OFWs are Filipino people who travel over far parts of the world in hopes that luck will abide them and maybe help in building a better financial status. As they navigate unfamiliar territories, OFWs contribute not only to the economic advancement of their host countries, but also to the development of their homelands and the family that they left. The money they earn is a direct outcome of their relentless hard work and effort, motivating them to

persist and strive for excellence in their jobs. These remittances that were sent back home became lifelines for families, allowing them to pursue education, healthcare, and a higher standard of living.

Every day, Overseas Filipino Workers or OFWs quietly confront

one of life’s most difficult hurdles: the distance that separates them from their loved ones. Connected only through screens, they long for the tangible presence of those they hold dear. Enduring the strain of leaving their

homeland, they suffer from the dual pressures of meeting their own needs in a foreign country and adapting to a new world filled with question marks. The persistent fear of failure echoes in their minds as they bear the responsibility of being the beacon for their loved ones, all while feeling trapped in the shadows of emptiness in a land far from home. Unaware of the destiny that awaits them and the people that would

them, OFWs courageously face the unknown while carrying a

full of expectations. The challenges encountered by OFWs serve as a powerful revelation of sacrifice and adaptation, embodying a model of solidarity that unites Filipinos beyond geographical boundaries. The indelible mark they leave globally goes beyond economic contributions, standing as a testament to the enduring spirit defining the Filipino identity and rightfully earning them the title of Modern-Day Heroes. Their narratives paint a compelling portrait that consistently inspires, capturing the inherent beauty residing in the hearts of Filipino individuals.

Time-Wasting or Time-Indulging?

Do you still remember when it all began? The day when you wake up feeling motivated, ready to conquer the challenges the world has to offer, yet after a few seconds of checking your phone, a sense of ambivalence infiltrates your mind and strikes you with doubt; “What if I mess up? I don’t think I can do it today. I’ll start tomorrow.” is where it all started, right? That simple thought that scored against your hundreds of objectives, passing through your principles and into your mannerisms. thief of time,” as the saying goes, perfectly describes procrastination. But what is procrastination in the first place? Procrastination is when a person delays task until

it reaches its due date. Further delaying it to do unnecessary things that could only waste their time so that they could walk away from their task no matter how difficult it is. It is a way of relaxing for some, it could potentially drain them of their energy and willpower to start or even finish their given task. While this habit may seem innocuous at first, when chronic, would eventually lead to a stressful working environment that could negatively impact the physical and mental health of a person. That is why, when passive procrastination occurs, it can lead to a series of wasted opportunities and linked success disruptions. Eventually, procrastination is a common experience, even dating back to ancient civilizations. Different types of procrastination can happen to anyone, some of which are not as detrimental as you may think. It could even lead to positive results.

An example of this is why most people love procrastinating: a higher motivation to do the work because of time pressure. Working under the pressure of submitting on time has been shown to get people to be more productive and swift when doing their activities. They tend to waste no time, as they

don’t have time to waste. Another reason why people love procrastinating is the time to plan and finish another activity. People tend to set aside their activities to strategize how to create them as they please. They became aware of the possibilities of the results and how to avoid damage and mistakes. Procrastination, even in its simplest form, is usually frowned upon by many in the workplace. The scale weighing the results has been much more leaned into the negativity of the behavior, causing stereotypes to form as it flows with the wind. Murmurs that turned into belittling towards the rumored lazy and undisciplined have been recurring, even though it is a distorted truth. A delay is natural and should not jeopardize a person’s capacity to generate their finest products. Procrastination and passive procrastination are distinct, and they create different outcomes. While procrastinators might produce excellent results, the passive is a haze. In any case, it is up to the individual to decide if they wish to trade time for a little period of enjoyment. Just don’t develop it as a habit and let it block the light at the end of the tunnel.

Soaring with Time Efficiency

Effective time management is one of the pillars on which student leadership is built, because in today’s ever-changing, multifaceted world, leaders have to balance their obligations and duties while still promoting their academic and personal growth. A multitude of hats that require a range of abilities – from planning and interacting to resolving conflicts and working in a team – are usually worn by student leaders. In the web of duties, time management becomes an axiom of leadership, providing direction for the approach student leaders should take while working on these responsibilities. The role of time management in the lives of student leaders surpasses perfunctory compliance with tasks; it becomes the glue that binds their individual development, academic success, and the larger contribution they have to the university’s community. One can find at the heart of student leadership time management the allocation of time to different tasks and obligations. The starting point of this development is identifying student leaders’ multitude of roles that may be described as organizers, representatives, partners, or even students. With respect to these roles and based on their importance, it is possible to allocate time in a corresponding way, which implies that priorities must be recognized within each field. Such a skill allows not only successful fulfillment of one’s responsibilities but also provides a foundation for creating a sense of meaning and setting goals.

A fundamental aspect of time management is prioritization. Student leaders often face a plethora of responsibilities, from organizing events to attending conferences to maintaining academic excellence. The ability to identify and prioritize tasks based on their importance is a skill of a successful leader.

This involves understanding the broader goals of the organization or leadership role and

aligning day-to-day activities with those goals.

In this way, student leaders can focus their efforts on activities that will contribute most to the success of their leadership roles and the well-being of the communities they serve. Furthermore, effective time management goes hand in hand with the art of goal setting. Student leaders who set clear, achievable goals develop a roadmap that guides their actions and decisions. These goals can range from organizing a successful campus event to implementing new initiatives that address community needs. Clearly defined goals provide a sense of purpose and direction and help managers focus on what’s important. Additionally, the goal-setting process enables student leaders to evaluate the potential impact of their actions and ensure that their time is invested in activities that are consistent with the overall vision and mission of their leadership role. In the world of student leadership, accountability is the currency of trust. Time management plays a vital role in promoting accountability among student leaders. When leaders consistently meet deadlines, deliver on commitments, and demonstrate reliability, they earn the trust and respect of their colleagues, faculty, and the broader community. This culture of accountability not only increases the effectiveness of student leaders in their current roles but also sets the stage for continued success in future endeavors. Student leadership is demanding and often requires collaboration and effective communication. Time management becomes a key factor in ensuring that information is distributed effectively, meetings run efficiently, and collaborative work is synchronized. Student leaders who master time management help increase the overall effectiveness of their organization and create an environment where teamwork thrives and seamlessly achieves common goals. Furthermore, the skills acquired

through effective time management in student leadership have lasting implications for individuals’ future endeavors. As student leaders transition into their professional lives, the ability to manage time effectively becomes increasingly critical. The habits cultivated during student leadership – strategic planning, prioritization, and goal setting – seamlessly translate to the workplace, setting the stage for continued success and career advancement. However, the journey to mastering time management in the realm of student leadership is not without its challenges. Student leaders often face unexpected obstacles and shifting priorities, requiring adaptability and resilience. The capacity to adjust schedules and strategies in response to unforeseen circumstances is an integral aspect of effective time management. The ability to navigate uncertainty while staying focused on overarching goals distinguishes exceptional student leaders from their peers. In conclusion, time management stands as a way for the success of student leaders. Beyond the immediate benefits of accomplishing tasks and meeting deadlines, effective time management cultivates a mindset of responsibility, accountability, and strategic thinking. By mastering the art of prioritization, goal setting, and adaptability, student leaders can not only navigate the complex landscape of their roles but also lay the foundation for success. Student leaders can soar with excellence and efficiency in attaining the goals of their organization and also as a person in general. As they move forward from their student leadership roles, equipped with invaluable time management skills, they embark on a journey where the significance of efficient time utilization continues to shape their paths, influencing not only their trajectories but also leaving a lasting impact on the communities they serve.

Sexual Intercourse is a Biohazard

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a virus that weakens a person’s immune system. It is commonly passed onto others by means of sexual intercourse. This virus targets the body’s white blood cells called CD4 T-cells that are responsible for identifying harmful substances in our body such as viruses, parasites, bacteria, and even cancer cells.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there is no existing cure for HIV infection, but this has become a manageable disease allowing people who are infected to live long, and healthy lives. There are different types of HIV. The first type is HIV-1 that can be found all

throughout the world. The second type is HIV-2, and it’s mostly found in West Africa. The first stage of HIV is known as acute or primary infection. Its symptoms are like having a flu including fever, sore throat, rash, and swollen glands. The next stage is clinical latency or the asymptomatic stage that occurs after the acute infection. The patient might experience few or zero symptoms. In some rare instances the immune system in this pro cess maintains low viral status. After all those, the last level is; acquired immuno deficiency syndrome (AIDS). When a patient is in the last stage of infection, she/he only has a life expectancy of less than a few years.

HIV and AIDS are transmitted through the exchange of body fluids from people who’s already infected by the disease, such as

Technological Evolution: Stones to Phones

Technology has changed a lot over time, from simple tools made of stone to smart cars that can drive themselves. But, does technology change in a straight line, or are there some secrets that influence how it changes?

Now, what exactly are the factors that affect the evo lution of technol ogy? The most im port ant, curi osity, is the driv ing force of the innovation and crafti ness of the human mind.

This hunger for innovation allowed for the rapid growth and development of technology. Right next to curiosity is competition, similar to curiosity, this is a hunger that cannot be satiated, however, unlike curiosity, this hunger is one for power, not knowlcompanies,

Unmatched ability of Proton Therapy

As humanity continues to evolve in treatment technology, experts all around the world have started to use “Proton Therapy”, rather than traditional therapy as a more precise, effective, and accurate way to treat cancer. Unlike standard radiation treatments, which focus on cancer tumors but inadvertently harm healthy surrounding tissue, causing potential health complications later on, proton therapy or proton beam therapy uses beams of protons to deliver radiation directly to the tumors. This means that it can precisely target and match treatment to the cancer tumor with incredible accuracy while sparing healthy tissues and having fewer side effects, making it a more practical way of cancer treatment.

Patients in MD Anderson Proton Therapy Center often maintain an active lifestyle during and after the proton therapy treatment with most being able to continue to work while undergoing the treatment.

The MD Anderson

Proton Therapy Center is also expanding ways for proton therapy to benefit patients. They pioneered the Pencil Beam proton therapy or Scanning beam and the Intensity Modulated Proton Therapy (IMPT), which have proton beams of just millimeters offering unmatched ability to treat cancer.

The Pencil Beam is very effective on the most complex tumors like in the prostate, brain, eye, and cancers in children while leaving healthy tissues unharmed. The IMPT on the other hand, is best used to deliver a more precise dose of proton to complex or concave-shaped tumors that may be adjacent to the spinal cord, neck, skull base, and etc.

As Steven J. Frank M.D., Medical Director of the MD Anderson Proton Therapy Center said, “We are excited to be leading the charge to change the way the world fights cancer”. This technology will help continue to pioneer discoveries and create a new standard of care worldwide.

Battling Earth’s Enemy: Healthier life and Climate

While we continue to baffle climate change affecting our day-today lives, air pollution remains a serious threat causing health problems and environmental damage to all living things here on Earth.

Air pollution refers to the release of chemicals and particles in the atmosphere that pose a danger to us and the planet. Some air pollution is caused by natural events like volcanic eruptions, but most are mainly man-made like through factories and transportation. This causes green-

house gasses like carbon dioxide to trap heat from the sun in the Earth’s atmosphere leading to a rise of global temperatures, creating a cycle in which air pollution contributes to climate change.

Air pollution like smog reduces visibility, harms plants, irritates the eye, and causes respiratory diseases. While toxic pollutants like gasoline can cause cancer, reproductive concerns, and birth defects. These risk factors are responsible for over 7 million deaths worldwide as the World Health Organization (WHO) said.

While air pollution has many consequences, there are solutions to this problem. Decreasing the use of fossil fuels can limit the release of greenhouse gases. Some countries even practice changing gas-powered vehicles to electric vehicles to reduce the odds of smog. Policies like the Clean Air Act have been proposed to safeguard public health. Reducing air pollution does not only contribute to a cleaner environment and healthier human health but can slow down the rate of global warming.

Harmonizing the Old and the New

As we navigate this new era in sports, the challenge of harmonizing tradition with innovation remains ever-present. Athletes stand at the forefront of this evolution, feeling the pulse of change with each stride they take. Striking the delicate balance between embracing technological advancements and preserving the essence of the game is not just a task for athletes alone but for all associates in the sporting community.

While technology propels us forward at an uncommon pace, we must not forget the roots from which we’ve grown. Our customs and traditions are not relics of the past but rather guiding lights illuminating the path to our sporting identity. They serve as a reminder of our beliefs and the path we’ve gone to get here.

The integration of technology into sports not only revolutionizes performance but also transforms the way we experience and interact with the games we love. From instant replays to virtual reality training simulations, these advancements open up new avenues for engagement while simultaneously posing questions about authenticity and

integrity.

Amidst the clamor for innovation, it’s essential to recognize the value of our traditional practices. By grounding us in our common history and cultural legacy, it offers us a sense of continuity in a world that is continuously evolving.

Finding symmetry between tradition and innovation requires careful navigation. Yet, it is within this tension that the true beauty of sports lies, the fusion of the old and the new, the past and the future. It is in this combination that we discover the essence of the game, where innovation enhances tradition and tradition enriches innovation.

Let us not view tradition and innovation as opposing matters but rather as complementary elements working together to propel sports to greater heights. By embracing both, we create a match of sporting excellence woven from the threads of our collective past and future aspirations.

In the end, sports transcend mere competition, they embody the human spirit striving for greatness. Let’s continue to be committed to preserving our history while looking forward to what the future holds. Together, let us ensure that sports remain a beacon of unity, inspiration, and joy for generations to come.

Partners in Success

There is a tremendous opportunity for synergy between education and sports, one that might lead to the building of important bridges between the domains of academics and athletics. Sports and academics are two seemingly unrelated fields, each with its own priorities, values, and skill set. Take into account, for example, the advantages of physical activity for cognition. Playing sports improves cognitive abilities, including attention, memory, and problem-solving techniques in addition to physical health.

Students that play sports can develop mental acuity, which has a direct positive impact on their academic achievement. Athletes can also greatly benefit from the discipline that comes from intellectual pursuits. Goal-setting, time management, and tenacity in the face of adversity are characteristics shared by athletes who excel both on the field and in the classroom.

Moreover, collaboration and teamwork are highly regarded in both sports and academia. Students work in groups on projects and participate in cooperative learning activities much of

the time in class. Similar to this, sports give people the chance to collaborate with one another to achieve a common objective, encouraging teamwork and togetherness.

Sports-related virtues like tenacity, sportsmanship, and resilience are definitely applicable in an academic setting. Playing sports teaches kids how to handle failure, enjoy successes, and maintain moral principles, all of which are important life lessons. Through the identification and utilization of the interrelationships between education and sports, instructors and coaches can establish comprehensive learning settings that foster students’ personal and academic advancement.

Every profession, whether in the classroom or on the field, offers insightful lessons and chances for intellectual and personal growth. Essentially, recognizing the innate linkages between academics and athletics and using them to forge new avenues for student success is bridging the gap between them. We provide the conditions for everyone to have a more thorough and rewarding educational experience as we create links between these two.

UNTAPPED POTENTIAL

Sports serve as a powerful tool for shaping the identity of a nation, fostering unity among its people, and promoting physical and mental well-being. The Philippines is a nation with a rich sporting heritage, deeply rooted in the passion for basketball and boxing. However, amidst the fervor for these two sports, there exists a significant lack of exposure to a diverse range of athletic pursuits. This phenomenon not only limits the opportunities for individuals to explore their athletic potential but also hinders the development of a more inclusive and dynamic sporting culture in the country.

One of the primary reasons for the lack of exposure to diverse sports in the Philippines is the overwhelming dominance of basketball and boxing in the mainstream sporting scene. In the Philippines, basketball and boxing have become more than just recreational activities; they are symbols of national pride and identity. Basketball quickly captured the imagination of Filipinos and became a beloved pastime, played in almost every corner of the country, from urban courts to rural barangays. Similarly, boxing, with national heroes like Manny Pacquiao, has garnered immense popularity and admiration, contributing to the collective identity of the Filipino people.

These two sports have captured the imagination of the Filipino people for decades, ingrained in the national consciousness as symbols of pride

and identity. As a result, other sports struggle to gain traction and visibility, often relegated to the sidelines or overshadowed by the popularity of basketball courts and boxing rings. As a result, societal attitudes and perceptions may prioritize these sports over others, creating a stigma around lesser-known disciplines and discouraging individuals from exploring alternative athletic pursuits.

Despite these challenges, addressing the lack of exposure to diverse sports in the Philippines is essential for fostering a more inclusive and vibrant sporting landscape. By broadening the range of athletic opportunities available to individuals, sports organizations, educational institutions, and communities can promote diversity, inclusivity, and holistic development. This in-

cludes investing in infrastructure, expanding educational curricula to incorporate a variety of sports, and raising awareness about the value of embracing different athletic disciplines.

Diversifying the sports landscape in the Philippines is essential for promoting inclusivity, and unlocking the nation’s athletic potential. While basketball and boxing hold a special place in Filipino culture, they should not overshadow the myriad of other sports that offer unique benefits and opportunities for participation. By embracing a more inclusive and expansive approach to sports, the Philippines can foster a healthier, more vibrant sporting culture that celebrates diversity, encourages active lifestyles, and nurtures the talents of its people.

M5 World Championship

Breaking the “Home Team curse,” AP Bren defeated the mighty Sky Kings, Onic Esports from Indonesia, to win the Philippines’ fourth World Championship. The thrilling encounter, which ended in a 4-3 victory, took place on December 17, 2023, at the MLBB M5 World Championship Grand Finals at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila.

The series’ hero, David Charles “FlapTzy” Canon, won the MVP prize for the Finals, but Onic’s Filipino import, Kairi “Kairi” Rayosdelsol, gave Bren a run for their money with his amazing revenge skills. Bren gained an early advantage in the Grand Finals thanks to their motivation from

a previous setback against Onic in the Upper Bracket Finals. The tone was set by Michael Angelo “KyleTzy” Sayson’s triumph over Kairi in the vengeance battle. Bren’s lead was further cemented by FlapTzy’s invincible Thamuz in the EXP lane. Team fights were common in the middle of the game, which favored Bren. The key damage producers were Marco Stephen “Super Marco” Requitano and Angelo Kyle “Pheww” Arcangel. Onic was severely hurt by Rowgien Stimpson “Owgen” Unigo’s setups with Mathilda, and their problems were exacerbated by FlapTzy’s skill at zoning. Bren continued to dominate the game as it went into the late stages,

using discipline to prevent costly mistakes. Bren won the first game of the series 1-0 thanks to a vital lord that KyleTzy secured, tipping the odds even further in their favor.

Bren maintained this lead in the opening game, even with Onic’s tenacity in the second. Onic, however, took advantage of the situation and presented serious difficulties. Bren’s determination was put to the test by Gilang’s “Sanz” strategic positioning with Gord and set-ups from Nicky Fernando “Kiboy” Pontonuwu’s Ruby. The second game finished 1-1 in a tie. In games three and four, Bren recovered, showing aggressiveness and discipline that overpowered Onic. Despite Onic’s heroic

efforts, Bren was clearly superior. Bren was up 3-1 and looked like the winner. After winning two straight games, Onic’s “Never Say Die” mentality was evident as they forced a game to be decided on the spot. Neither team was able to dominate the fierce battle in game 5, which set up a game 6 that extended the series. Both sides engaged in intense combat from the start to the middle of the game in the championship match, thrilling crowds with their team battles. In the final Lord Dance, Bren took advantage of a mistake made by Kairi to win and give the Philippines their fourth World Championship championship in a row. Looking back on the

Navigating the Narratives

In sports, the story is usually driven by the intense competitive atmosphere, which is characterized by the passionate applause of the audience and the exhilarating experience of winning and losing. But in all of this excitement, a crucial element is frequently overlooked: how frequently false information and manipulation are spread. In the current digital era, which is marked by the pervasive use of social media and the rise of fake news, it is crucial to approach information critically and double-check sources before drawing any conclusions. Although the media plays a crucial role in influencing public opinion and social norms, it can occasionally be used recklessly, especially in the context of sports. Misinformation can spread quickly, feeding erroneous narratives and causing negative outcomes for both teams and players.

The world of sports has evolved beyond exciting contests and ardent spectators. These days, false information also thrives there, proliferating due to dramatic headlines and widely shared social media content. We must comprehend how this occurs and why it is significant. We can see from real-world instances how detrimental false information can be to teams and athletes. Individuals and sports groups must take the initiative to address this problem head-on. Awareness and education are essential. As we’ve seen, fake news has the power to drastically affect significant occasions like elections. Just take a look at the destruction caused by false information during the COVID-19 outbreak. Sharing information is not enough; it’s also important to share the appropriate information in a responsible manner. But let’s take a closer look. Misinformation in sports can take many different forms, ranging

theBeyondGame

In the fast-paced world of today, where challenges are numerous and competition is intense, the value of character is immeasurable. The foundation of trust, respect, and success in both the personal and professional domains is one’s character, which is the result of their behavior and values. It’s a highly sought-after attribute that is valued by mentors, coaches, and people in general as being crucial for assisting and motivating others to succeed. But where can one nurture something so essential to who they are? Remarkably, the vibrant and thrilling world of sports holds the solution.

Sports, which are frequently associated with rivalry, offer an ideal environment for the development of character. Athletes continuously confront obstacles that put their mettle to the test and push them over their boundaries, whether it’s on the field, court, pitch, or track. Character is formed in the furnace of competition, not just revealed. As they pursue wins while respecting the game’s regulations and their rivals, athletes acquire valuable lessons about honesty, decency, and fair play.

However, sports play a much bigger part in character development than just the outcome. It concerns how athletes conduct themselves on and off the field, how they handle hardship, and how they relate to other people. Sports instill discipline, tenacity, and resilience in the face of adversity, among other priceless life lessons. Athletes learn the value of hard work and dedication

from sensational rumors about athletes’ personal lives to seemingly innocent injury reports. However, the influence is enormous, regardless of the size or breadth. It erodes trust and sportsmanship at their core. Consider the athletes themselves, who are subjected to untruths and rumors all the time. It’s a hit to their mental health in addition to their professions. Misinformation in sports has the effect of promoting negative stereotypes, eliminating underrepresented voices, and whatever else is out there. It’s critical to keep in mind the influence that words have and the responsibility that accompanies information sharing, particularly in a sector as significant as sports. It’s evident that disinformation has grown to be a major problem in sports in today’s fast-paced world, underscoring the significance of accepting different points of view. Social media makes information spread quickly,

therefore, it’s important to make sure the information we post is truthful and balanced. Whether we are ardent supporters or members of a sporting organization, we must put honesty, openness, and diversity first in our communication. Diverse viewpoints are acknowledged and highlighted, which helps us both dispel false information and comprehend the sports industry better. In order to maintain the actual meaning of sportsmanship and make sure that all parties involved—athletes, teams, and fans—feel appreciated and valued, let’s cultivate an environment where integrity and appropriate communication are encouraged. Let’s continue working together to combat false information and manipulation, spreading truth and kindness to enhance the sporting experience for everyone.

Leveling the Playing Field

during their practices and workouts, qualities that will benefit them long after their playing careers are finished.

In addition, sports give people a chance to practice vital interpersonal abilities, including leadership, teamwork, and communication. Athletes learn how to work together, encourage and support one another, and set an example for others, whether they are competing alone or as a team. These encounters help people develop into moral leaders and valuable members of society, in addition to giving them a sense of companionship and community.

The greatest significant benefit of sports is probably that they provide a controlled, secure setting where people can succeed and fail. Athletes discover how to acknowledge the efforts of others in their accomplishments and celebrate wins with humility and elegance. In the same vein, they learn to accept failure with dignity and view their errors and shortfalls as chances for improvement. Athletes gain emotional intelligence and resilience from these experiences, learning how to handle life’s ups and downs with bravery and grace.

Sports have a significant and wide-ranging impact on character development. Sports offer a transforming path of self-discovery and personal progress, from imparting values like honesty and respect to nurturing important life skills like discipline and resilience. Sports provide people with valuable lessons that help them become morally upright leaders and kind citizens, both on and off the playing field.

Inthe realm of sports, where the pursuit of excellence collides with the boundaries of human capability, the use of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) stands as a contentious issue. From the ancient Olympic Games to the modern arena, athletes have sought every advantage to push beyond the limits of their physicality. Yet, in this quest for glory, ethical dilemmas emerge, casting shadows over the very essence of fair play, integrity, and the well-being of athletes.

The ban on PEDs is not merely a legal or regulatory matter; it is a moral imperative that transcends the boundaries of sport. It reflects a collective commitment to uphold the purity of athletic competition, protect the integrity of sports, and prioritize the well-being of athletes. Through unwavering dedication to these principles, sports organizations can ensure that the pursuit of excellence remains synonymous with integrity, fairness, and the indomitable spirit of human achievement.

PEDs fundamentally challenge the principle of fair play by bestowing an unfair advantage upon those who utilize them. In an arena where success traditionally hinges on a blend of innate talent, relentless training, and unwavering commitment, the introduction of PEDs disrupts this delicate equilibrium. Such substances incentivize risk-taking behavior, compromising both the health and integrity of athletes while tarnishing the authenticity of sports competitions.

Moreover, PEDs pose sig-

nificant health risks to athletes. Many of these substances carry detrimental side effects, ranging from cardiovascular complications to hormonal imbalances and liver damage. The relentless pressure to achieve exceptional performance benchmarks may drive athletes to resort to PEDs, jeopardizing their long-term well-being in pursuit of immediate success.

Athletes have always sought ways to gain an edge, whether through training innovations, dietary modifications, or other means. In this context, some argue that allowing carefully regulated and monitored use of PEDs could level the playing field and enhance the spectacle of sports, as long as the health and safety of athletes are prioritized. However, implementing a system for regulated PED use presents significant challenges, including determining which substances should be permitted, establishing dosage limits, ensuring equal access for all athletes, and maintaining rigorous testing and oversight protocols to prevent abuse and protect athletes’ health.

The banning of performance-enhancing drugs in sports is essential to uphold the principles of fairness, integrity, and athlete welfare. The prohibition of PEDs is indispensable to upholding these principles, ensuring that athletic competitions are founded on natural abilities, relentless effort, and ethical conduct, while simultaneously safeguarding the health and well-being of athletes across all levels of competition.

CHALLENGES, TRIUMPHS, AND ANTHONIAN GRIT

In a highstakes battle of skill and determination, the USANT Junior High School basketball team faced off against NNHS in the MBA 2023 Inter-Junior High School Division Finals at the Iriga City Sports Center last January 12, 2024. Despite a commendable effort, USANT fell short with a final score of 72-91, securing the title of First Runner-Up. At the beginning of the game, USANT couldn’t get into a rhythm offensively as NNHS applied pressure and disrupt their plays. NNHS was leading 10-2 until John Paul Talagtag from USANT got 1 layup, wherein he failed to convert but still brought the score closer to 10-4. In the remaining minutes of the quarter, both teams

got sloppy and just kept on turning the ball over, resulting in a 1514 quarter, with USANT taking a one-point lead. Kickstarting the 2nd quarter was a three-pointer 15 seconds in from Marc Julian Iblan. The game continued to the peak of the game as both teams were locked in both defense and offense wise. The crowd was on the edge of their seats as the score remained close throughout the second quarter. Iblan, paid for his low scoring in the first quarter by leading his respective team and gaining them 10

points in the second quarter, while it was mostly a team effort within NNHS. The first half concluded with 3836 NNHS leading by 2. The third quarter quickly commenced, and USANT completely lost their momentum. They kept on turning the ball, not even making it past half court at times, which allowed NNHS to

go on a 10-2 run to start off the third. NNHS capitalized on USANT’s turnovers and defensive lapses, extending their lead even further.

68-51 marked the end of the third quarter, with NNHS firmly in control of the game. In the fourth quarter, USANT tried to mount a comeback by increasing their defensive intensity and executing better on offense. They managed to go on a small run, cutting NNHS’s lead to 13. However, NNHS quickly responded with timely baskets and solid defense, preventing USANT from closing the gap any further. The final buzzer sounded with NNHS emerging victorious, securing a

well-deserved win with a final score of 91-72. NNHS guard number 25, Jefferson Sacdal, led the team in scoring with 22 points, 10 boards, and 7 steals. USANT, on the other hand, had both their shifty starting guards, Marc Julian Iblan and John Paul Talagtag, run the show, with them combining for 48 points. The final score of 91-72 in favor of NNHS may have marked the end of USANT’s Migngayamun Basketball Association 2023 season, but it certainly did not dampen the spirit of Anthonians. Their journey, filled with ups and downs, showcased the Anthonian spirit that extends beyond the court, exemplifying the indomitable character of these young athletes.
