I remember one time at our family vacation in Kulu, where my dad was ready before all of us to give white water rafting a try. My own last experience was at Rio in Brazil, where we were taken up the mountain in a car before having gear and a pilot strapped on my back and jumping off a cliff. Before I even realized it, we were paragliding smoothly with a panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean, the beautiful beach and the picturesque Sugar Loaf Mountain. It was one of the best 5 minutes of my life where I was flying and taking all of nature in. Now, our own country also has a wide number of exciting sports available for your adrenaline junkies. So check out the cover story, Sports That Thrill and dare to test your limits. For all those who don’t plan to travel or are unable to get away this summer, we recommend you spend some time doing your personal SWOT analysis. It's a tool that identifies the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, thus making it a great way to know where you stand in life. Talking about careers, we bring you an insight into careers in Animation and VFX this issue. REVOLUTIONARY 3D PRINTED FASHION AT LOUGHBOROUGH UNIVERSITY

 Personalized 3D printed fashion - manufactured within 24 hours - is the end goal of a new project led by Loughborough University that’s set to change the way we shop for clothes.  Dr Guy Bingham, Senior Lecturer in Product and Industrial Design has teamed up with global textile and garment manufacturer the Yeh Group, to embark on landmark work in 3D textile printing that could revolutionize how clothes and footwear are made.  Currently, garment manufacture generates 1.8 million tons of waste material - equivalent to 70kg or 100 pairs of jeans per UK household, with 6.3 billion m³ of water used in the process - equivalent to 200,000 litres per year per household or 1,000 filled bathtubs.  Dr Bingham said: “With 3D printing there is no limit to what you can build and it is this design freedom which makes the technology so exciting by bringing to life what was previously considered to be impossible. This landmark technology allows us as designers to innovate faster and create personalized, ready-towear fashion in a digital world with no geometrical constraints and almost zero waste material. We envisage that with further development of the technology, we could 3D print a garment within 24 hours.”  David Yeh, Managing Director, Tong Siang (Yeh Group), said: “3D Fashion supports the Yeh Group vision of direct polymer to garment manufacture. The Yeh Group is always striving to cut out unnecessary waste and resource use."

Take A Test

KNOW

THYSELF You are more likely to get ahead in life if you use your talents and strengths to their fullest extent. In the same way, you’ll suffer less backlashes if you know what your weaknesses are and if you effectively learn to manage them. How do you go about identifying your strengths and weaknesses as well as analyzing the opportunities and foreseeing the threats that come your way? SWOT analysis is a useful technique that helps you do this. You begin by answering questions about each of the four areas being examined. Honesty is crucial or else the results won’t be as meaningful. Try not limiting yourself to the strengths that you currently display. List all the ones that have been dormant for a while as well. Make sure to note down what makes you special and unique. Begin by identifying your strengths. These are the traits or skills that set you apart from others. Here are a couple of questions you could answer. • What advantages do you have that others don't have? • What do you do better than anyone else? • What personal resources can you access? • What do other people see as your strengths? • Which of your achievements are you most proud of? • What values and ethics set you apart from your peers? • How strong is your network of connections?

S

STRENGHTS

16 YOUTHINCMAG.COM MAY 2016

Want to know more about yourself and what’s really hindering you from maximizing your potential, Pearl Mathias brings you this SWOT analysis, which is sure to give you some insight If you still have any difficulty identifying your strengths, write down a list of your personal characteristics. Some of these will hopefully be strengths. We now move on to weaknesses. Here we examine the areas that need improvement and what could possibly be holding you back in your career. • What are your negative work habits and traits? • Does any part of your education or training need improving? • What would other people see as your weaknesses? • Where can you improve? • What are you afraid to do or most likely to avoid? • What negative feedback about your personality or work habits have you received? • Do you have personality traits that hold you back in your field?

W

WEAKNESSES

It is important to be realistic in this field. You need to consider this from a personal as well as an external perspective. What do others see in you? Are your coworkers constantly outperforming you in key areas? It helps to face the unpleasant truths earlier on and work on them. Now we look at any opportunities that may arise for you. Examine your strengths and see if these may lead to any openings. Now look at your weaknesses and ask yourself if these could open up opportunities, by working on or eliminating them.

• What is the state of the economy? • Is your industry growing? • Is there new technology in your industry? • Is there new demand for a skill or trait you possess? • What are the biggest changes occurring in the current business environment? • Have customers or co-workers given you feedback about new services you could provide, or ways to improve your manner?

O

OPPORTUNITIES

• Is your industry contracting or changing directions? • Is there strong competition for the types of jobs for which you are best suited? • Do your weaknesses inhibit your ability to rise in your company or change jobs? • What is the biggest external danger to your goals? • Are there any new professional standards you cannot meet? • Are there any new technology, education or certification requirements that will impede your progress?

T

THREATS You might also find opportunities in the following areas: • While networking at events, educational classes, or conferences. • If a colleague goes on an extended leave. Could you take on some of this person's projects to gain experience? • A new role or project that forces you to learn new skills, like public speaking or international relations. • A company expansion or acquisition. Do you have specific skills (like a second language) that could help with the process? Look at the external factors you can take advantage of to pursue a promotion, find a new job or determine a career direction. Finally, look at the threats that inhibit your career growth. This takes into account the external factors that could hurt your chances to attain your goals. Once you have filled out the answers, there are two ways to analyze the information and come up with a strategy. You can do either of two things: you can match or convert. Matching means to connect two of the categories to determine what your course of action will be. For example, if you match strengths to opportunities, it shows where you can be aggressive and take action on those lines. On the other hand, when you match

weaknesses to threats, it exposes the areas you should work on or situation that you need to avoid. It lets you know where you need to be more defensive of your position. Converting means turning your negatives into positives. In other words, you convert your weaknesses into strengths or threats into opportunities. You could grow a skill set through education or find a creative way to showcase your weakness as a strength. For example, if you are outgoing in nature, working in an introspective and isolated environment may not suit you too well. In such a case, you should work toward a position in sales, for instance, where you can use your outgoing personality traits to interact with people, thus turning your weakness into strength. FOLLOW UP It won’t help if you don’t follow through with the outcomes of your SWOT analysis. It will fail to be effective if the elements that are found through the analysis cannot be put into play. The best outcome is to take action and succeed in the opportunities that you have identified through the SWOT. This will not only benefit you on a personal level, but on a professional level as well and it will set you apart from your peers and colleagues in the workplace. yi

Pankhuri Shukla explores the issues of gender stereotypes in everyday life

R

emember that phase of transition from adulthood to adolescence when the word ‘sex’ suddenly became synonymous with the word ‘gender’? Remember all the ooh’s and aah’s it attracted? It’s been so many years down the line, but the ambiguity continues to exist.

Gender and sex If you look back, you’ll realise that ‘gender’ was one of the many ideas thrust upon us like a birthday present, wrapped in glossy paper, during the oblivious years of our childhood; whereas the word ‘sex’ was introduced to us more discreetly. It lacked explanation and felt more like a trophy for having formally entered adolescence. Technically speaking, the definitions possess the same difference. ‘Gender’ refers to the characteristics that differentiate between masculinity and femininity. They’re thrust upon us from the very minute we enter into this world. ‘Sex’, on the other hand, is the biological differentiation between male and female. It is way more discreet in nature owing the same to social norms. It is this difference between the two that forms the crux of the matter. Gender stereotypes – what’s that? Every time you see a woman driver and mutter a curse word under your breath or presume a man with a beard to be more ‘manly’ than one without, or ask someone not to “behave like a girl” – you’re gender stereotyping that person. In fact, the most common stereotype is that of the assigning the colour pink for girls and blue for boys. So what are these stereotypes exactly? Gender stereotypes are a set of over-exaggerated characteristics and behaviours attributed to a group of people on the basis of their sex. They are not inherent traits but social constructions that have accumulated over a long period of time. They’re neither positive nor negative. They are inaccurate descriptions and penetrate a system of unfairness in the society. They are so deeply ingrained in our mindset that it is often difficult to recognise them on the surface level. History There really isn’t a particular time period when these norms suddenly emerged out of thin air and took over the world. Broadly speaking, they have evolved over time. One theory suggests that the idea of gender norms emerged from division of labour that was followed by Hunter-gatherers. The men went hunting whilst the women stayed behind to take care of their young ones; thereby, establishing the concept of Aggressors and Nurturers, respectively. But that’s not all. One must remember that this division of labour was based on practical convenience rather than the natural skills and abilities of men and women. Hence, it is not that men can’t nurture or women lack aggression, rather the subconscious moulding of individuals to fit into the established idea of a ‘man’ and ‘woman’ that has resulted in such discrimination. Who is to be blamed? A common misconception is that of blaming men for being the sole fountainheads of these gender norms.

18 YOUTHINCMAG.COM MAY 2016

However, that’s far from the truth. Men and women are equal perpetuators of these stereotypes. Tulika Saxena, a professional in the field of Gender Studies who has done her PhD. from Australian National University, explains this by taking the example of the caste system that has existed in India for quite some time. “The higher and the lower castes both exist in the same society,” she says. “Each is bound by specific rules and regulations. The oppressed members choose not to raise a voice because they feel the need to exist in the society. Whereas the oppressors do not question the system because they’re enjoying the power.” The system here is the institution of Patriarchy which victimises both men as well as women. While women are considered safe in the company of a man, men are prevented from expressing their emotions; while women are expected to take up their husband’s surname after marriage, men are ridiculed for wanting to stay home and take care of their young ones. While women are expected to walk, talk and look a certain way, men are discouraged from developing any interest in activities that are supposedly for women.

against the other as both are equally constrained. The social structure that assumes women can have no sexual autonomy is also harmful to men as it assumes that they can never be victims of sexual assault.” Another plausible end product of the same could be the breakdown of existing stereotypes resulting in the creation of more stereotypes. A girl chopping off her hair could be seen as a disturbance in the existing norms but this could also lead to a generalisation of girls with short hair being labelled as rebels trying to break free from femininity. And thus, the question remains – is there a way out? yi

Dr. Vineeta Bajpai, a Mumbai-based HR professional, shares her personal experience with gender stereotypes. “All my ideals about women empowerment dissolved the minute I got married. I subconsciously started to behave like a typical housewife as that’s what I had always seen and imagined married life to be like. Surprisingly, it was the support of my husband that motivated me to rebuild my identity from scratch and realise that Patriarchy and Men are not two sides of the same coin,” she says.

A happy ending or not? These gender roles have plagued the society since time immemorial and continue to do so. It is a system of conventions that imparts the illusion of comfort and equality that starts at a very young age. However what’s new is the recent trend in realisation of the same. The advocacy of Feminism and Gender sensitisation is a beacon of hope for change. It will require years of unlearning gender norms, roles, and responsibilities. It’s a difficult and long process but it is only the gradual breaking down of these standardisations through reflection of self and constant conversation that can help mankind grow beyond its past. Anushka Jadhav, Managing Director at No Country for Women – an organisation that aims to combat gender based discrimination through education and conversation – says, “It is not a matter of one gender

QUESTIONS • Do you face issues due to gender stereotyping? • What, according to you, is the reason behind gender stereotyping? • What would you suggest we can do to change gender stereotyping? Alston D’souza Society focuses on the convenience of women because of which men are not given much importance and they are often spoken badly of because of few cases. For eg. Because of the amount of rape cases that are taking place all men are referred to as ‘dogs’ which is rude to be honest. The government and the media need to portray men and women equally as both of them have equal rights and responsibilities. People listen and believe the media. If the media creates a good image for men then the people will automatically look up to them.

Pearl Fernandes Our Indian culture is the base root of gender stereotyping though it has been eradicated to some extent it is still present subconsciously. Motivate people to break stereotypes and put forth their example for others to follow and understand the importance of gender equality.

Mazahir Gadiwalla The reason goes way back in the past when sexism originated. It is also based on assumptions. Men and women should be treated equally. You can’t hit a woman but that does not mean you can hit a guy. They should have an equal social status.

Stefan Mateen Yes to be honest i have encountered gender strereotyping. The reason behind gender stereotyping differs from situation to situation. For eg. In an office men are given more preference and important jobs are handed over to them because its the mentality that women cannot carry out important tasks. Also, noticed it in daily life. Rickshaws won’t stop when we call but when a girl comes forward and if she’s wearing revealing clothes then even more. Men and women should be treated equally since there is equal contribution of both in todays society

Danielle Pereira Gender stereotyping is something almost everyone faces daily. It probably comes from a place of insecurity that one faces about being either a man or a woman. It also occurs because of the kind of social environment that people live in and the kind of thinking the have developed over time. It needs to be curbed/completely eradicated from an early age. Kids at home should be taught that both parents are capable of doing the same kind of work and make decisions on all sorts of things together.

STUDENT

SPEAK 20 YOUTHINCMAG.COM MAY 2016

Brian Rodrigues Of course, daily. Being a boy I'm expected to be brave in a fight/when anyone is in trouble, where as a girl is asked to leave the scene immediately. I'm sure women are expected to cook, clean and do whatever it is that society says because none of that is a "mans job". There are multiple reasons. It just boils down to the simple fact that people with little or absolutely no knowledge of an individual's capability and constantly turn to their gender to find flaws in them have set these "stereotypes". Maybe if people start doing the opposite of what they're currently doing under these stereotypes and mock society in return, it could be a wake up call for everyone.

Let me know if you receive it Mr. Ninad Panse, CEO of DSK International Campus in Pune talks to us about what it takes to be an animator or a VFX artist

24 YOUTHINCMAG.COM MAY 2016

WHAT ARE THE THINGS AN ASPIRING STUDENT MUST LOOK FOR IN A COURSE IN ANIMATION AND VFX? To answer this, at first we have to define the qualities an aspiring student should have to pursue a course in Animation and VFX, which are: Cultural Sensitivity- This is not about what is good or bad, but about the varied exponents. Story telling capabilities- Capabilities that resolve problems through creative means. Empathy towards the eco-systemUnderstanding the emotional states like belief and desires of the society. If an aspiring student has all the three aforementioned qualities, then he/she should look forward for an institute which nurtures them and provide with a platform to excel. Two important determining factors for an institute should be exclusivity in the delivery of the course curriculum. Trainers are the backbone of any institute and an aspirant should evaluate the kind of trainers associated with the institute before joining it. If the institute has trainers who have practiced cultural sensitivity, story-telling and empathy towards eco-system, not in a local environment but in a global industry, their wisdom is a huge asset for the students The proximity with which the institute works with the industry is also an extremely important factor to consider. This is practical training and the success of it highly depends on its adaptability towards current industry practices and requirements. If the institute allows you to interact with studios of different countries, you have made the right choice! WHAT IS THE SCOPE OF ANIMATION AND VFX IN INDIA? A lot of people associate the animation industry only with entertainment industry, but what everyone needs to understand that animation as a function caters to various other industries like

Education, Road Transport, Real estate, Medical, Defense applications, Advertising, Pharmaceuticals, Oil & Gas, Shipping, Meteorological Department, Mining, etc. Various K12 schools use the concept of smart classes to teach certain subjects. These smart classes are a derivative of animation. Another interesting fact is the electrical wiring of a submarine and the training of electrician responsible for the wiring, which is also done through the elements of animation. Today, animation has a wide application compared to what it had a decade ago. According to a report by KPMG, the animation, VFX and postproduction industry in India has grown from Rs. 42,000 million in 2013 to Rs. 50,800 million till date (source:animationexpress.com). With the Indian animation industry witnessing a growth of 34% CAGR since 2009 and an expected hiring rate of 30%, experts predict that the industry will face a deficit of skilled animators in the future. This means that there is great scope and urgent need to accelerate skill development in the animation industry. Major companies like Dreamworks, Turner, Disney, Prana, Tata Elexsi, Oglivy have already set up their companies in India and have been recruiting Indian animators for various global projects. As per as Indian content is concerned, the success of movies like Bahubali, I.P.s like Chota Bheem and advertisements like Bisleri, Vodafone and MRF have made the prospect of Indian Animation and VFX Industry pretty exciting. WHAT DOES A CAREER IN THIS FIELD OFFER? These are all careers of passion and if pursued with the best of the effort, can offer huge creative satisfaction and definite success. In terms of jobs, you have multiple roles to join in as; you can be a Rigging artist or a 3D animator, or a Concept Artist or a Lighting Supervisor or a specialist 2D

animator, or a VFX editor, or a Match Move artist or even a Technical Director. It all depends on your skills and interest. Interesting fact: All these roles and responsibilities are multi-million dollar professions in themselves. HOW CAN A FRESHER ESTABLISH A FOOTHOLD IN THIS FIELD THAT HAS INTENSE COMPETITION? The institute from where an aspirant does his/her course should provide with value proposition to the students, in terms of trainers, curriculum and industry exposure. At DSKIC, we work very closely with the industry and make sure that there’s enough nexus with the professionals from the industry during the tenure of the course. Masterclasses and jury presentations by industry experts provide a perfect platform to the students to understand the global practices of the animation industry. Further, two internships in the third and fourth year provide the students an opportunity to understand implementation of production pipeline of an animation film making process. In addition to this, we have resident trainers from 12 different nationalities with considerable amount of work experience in the related field. They are perfectly equipped to deliver an industry centric curriculum derived from France. By the time the students graduate from DSKIC, they have created their own intellectual properties and have already discovered their strengths. They are able to manifest their skills in a much better way as they are completely industry ready and therefore they are not bothered about competition. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO AN ASPIRING ANIMATOR? If you are connected well to the society and have the impetus to resolve problem through story telling - you are welcome to be a part of this industry.

The Student Perspective Arjun Ratra, a 5th year student from Animation at the DSK International Campus tells us about what inspires one to be an animator WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CHOOSE ANIMATION AND VFX FOR YOUR CAREER? The choice to go for a career in animation was based on several factors such as being in the booming Indian industry, the freedom of working on something new every day which breaks away from working in a repetitive 9-to-5 job, and getting to visualize ideas and making them come to life. But more than anything else, it was the fact that being creative would be the key requirement for any work that I would ever get to do. TELL US ABOUT ONE DEFINING MOMENT IN YOUR ACADEMIC OR CAREER HISTORY THAT YOU ARE EXCEPTIONALLY PROUD OF. I guess that defining moment would be when I'll be sitting for the premiere of my final year movie, which I'm currently working on with my team (Pranav, Tania, Tanay, Colin and Ajinkya). It's been a brilliant journey from

the time I pitched the concept of the movie to this point where we are so close to completion of the movie and it’s a great feeling to see everything come together. WHAT ARE THE MAJOR CHALLENGES YOU HAVE FACED UNTIL NOW IN THE FIELD/COURSE? If you love the work that you're creating, then there's barely anything that will come across as a challenge. That's one advantage of choosing a career path that you really want to do and I would like to thank my parents for encouraging and supporting my decision throughout. I would also like to thank all the trainers of DSK International Campus for all their support and mentorship during my tenure of the course. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A PEER WHO IS ALSO ASPIRING TO BE AN ANIMATOR? If creativity is the fuel that you run on, then there's no better field to be in. yi

Out Of The Box Career

The Voice Behind the Screen

If you’re looking for something unusual and fun, that will bring laughter to millions of people the world over, then you could think of applying yourself to this career choice

I

f you’re reading this article, chances are that you’re either looking for something ‘out of the ordinary’ or you’re probably just flipping through this magazine and this happened to pop up. Either way being a Voice Over artist in today’s day and age is not totally unheard of, but it’s also not going to be one of your top 5 career choices. The very career that makes children giggle and adults smirk, is as diverse as it is complex. Right from the first voice over of Mickey Mouse in the Walt Disney movie,

26 YOUTHINCMAG.COM MAY 2016

Steamboat Willie, right up to now, 80 plus years from that day, the need for a good artist to lend their vocals to an animated movie is of utmost importance. TYPES OF WORK YOU WILL DO The different types of voice over jobs mainly involve television, radio, film, video games and audio books. Some of these require mainly a distinctive, clear voice, while others also demand considerable acting talent. Commercials, cartoon character voices, dubbing, promos,

narrating, and reading fiction or non-fiction books for audio recordings are some other kind of jobs you could do. Dubbing is considered a bonus skill in the voice over industry. Actors or artists capable of voicing different dialects and accents are especially likely to do well in this type of voice over work. Television and radio commercials are popular types of voice over jobs. REQUIREMENTS TO BE A VOICE OVER ARTIST Aspiring vocal actresses must make a habit of sending demo tapes to directors and frequently attend auditions. The field is very competitive, so voice actresses must be outgoing and network in order to find jobs. There are no educational requirements as such to become a voice actor, but many schools that offer performing arts programs have courses in voice acting. Some of these are standalone, non-credit courses or workshops that can be taken for personal enrichment or professional development. Others can be incorporated into degree programs in acting. Basic courses focus on performing voice-over work for a variety of mediums, and students typically practice reading scripts and receive feedback from industry professionals. Voice artists are responsible for maintaining their voices. You should engage in vocal exercises. Frequent practice, particularly with new tones and accents, prevents voice over artists from straining their vocal cords. THE VOICE INDUSTRY’S TOP PLAYERS DON LAFONTAINE’S legacy remains the aspiration of every voice actor. During his career, he recorded more than 5000 movie trailers, the most famous of them being the line “In a World” which was much used thereon. JASON OJALVO, the SVP of Content at Audible, caused a dynamic change in the voiceover industry with the launch of the Audiobook Creation Exchange. JEFF HIXON revolutionized the voiceover industry in 1998 by creating Voicebank.net. Over 75,000 voice over demos are posted on the website. The site provides a tool for clients to preview talent in the industry, access their representation, and discover aspiring voice actors. MEGHANA ERANDE, is an Indian voice actress who has dubbed foreign content into Hindi and Marathi. She has lent her voice for the Hindi version of Barbie as Rapunzel, Barbie as the Island Princess and The Little mermaid 2: Return To The Sea. PRIYANKA CHOPRA, IRRFAN KHAN, NANA PATEKAR, OM PURI and SHEFALI SHAH are set to lend their voice for the Hindi version of Disney’s upcoming American live-action epic release The Jungle Book. WHERE CAN YOU TAKE UP THIS COURSE? Indian Voice Over’s, Mumbai Filmit Academy, Mumbai Voice Bazaar, Mumbai

Pearl Mathias talks to Nishith Dhanak who tells us about what this career entails, the challenges that come with it and what he’d like young aspirants to know WHAT GOT YOU INTO A CAREER IN VOICE-OVERS? It was a bit co-incidental, as has been the case with a lot of the voice artists in the industry. I didn’t know much about voice overs up until when I was on my first job. One of my boss’ clients was a well-known voice artist. So that is how I got introduced to it. But the reason I got excited was that as a kid I did a lot of “Speech and Drama” through Trinity College. My parents really encouraged me towards it and I had a couple of wonderful teachers too. So those years and experiences as a kid made me believe that there could be place for me in the world of voice overs. And since I really enjoyed those days of “Speech & Drama” and public speaking, my choosing voice overs was a no brainer. WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE WITH US A PARTICULAR CHALLENGE YOU HAVE FACED IN YOUR CAREER? The biggest challenge I have faced in my career so far was getting the first few breaks / opportunities. People were usually reluctant to work with new voices and not getting many opportunities at the start also meant a very unstable income. And the fact that I did not know anyone from the voice over industry or its associated industries, made things harder as reaching out to people became that much more difficult. But I have been lucky to have met some very helpful and supportive individuals from the industry. Some of them being senior individuals who have guided me through difficult times. IN THE VOICE OVER BUSINESS, IS HAVING A REGIONAL ACCENT DETRIMENTAL? Not necessarily, but it can have an impact on the scope of work. And that goes for any language. In general, neutral accents are more sought after as they are more comprehensible to the target audience that speaks the particular language. But there are projects, at least in Hindi and English where certain regional accents are required at times. For instance, some radio ads are scripted to have specific characters speaking in a particular accent or style. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU LIKE TO GIVE THOSE ASPIRING TO BE A PART OF THIS INDUSTRY? Make sure you have a good understanding of the language you wish to voice in. That always helps understand the script better, understand how the target audience would comprehend the meaning of the script and eventually helps with the delivery of the lines. And one must definitely be patient through the start, as freelance work of any kind can get quite unpredictable when starting off. yi

here are a lot of things that go through a student’s mind while preparing for studies abroad. Finding an appropriate accommodation, the fear of relocating to a new place, leaving the luxuries of a home life to live all alone, making new friends, etc. During such a time, one of the things that probably never cross a student’s mind is having to deal with discrimination. However, racial discrimination can become a very real concern for students heading to less racially diverse countries. Rashi Arora, a student at London College of Communications, recently went through her own experience with racism.” London is a multicultural city, she says, “and LCC is a university where people from different diversities come to seek education. It was very disturbing when one of my fellow students passed a comment on my nationality and culture.” Racial discrimination is not always intended, which makes it worse, because the person discriminating against you probably doesn’t even know that they are treating you differently than they would treat others. Unintended discrimination is called microaggression. This includes offensive actions like someone holding their purse a little tighter when you cross them on the street, invalidations like assuming an Asian or Latino student is on a scholarship, and backhanded compliments like someone asking you how your English is so good when you’re from a primarily non-English speaking country. The latter microaggression is quite common for Indian students when they go to study abroad. These microaggressions usually stem from a misunderstanding of other cultures or just from innocence.

They may even be well-intentioned, like someone saying ‘you must be good in maths’ just because you’re Indian. Now whatever the intention of these comments may be, they have the same effect as deliberate discrimination. What’s surprising is that the perpetrators of these microaggressions aren’t racist, in fact, there’s a very high possibility that they consider themselves to be anti-racist. So how does one deal with microaggressions, or even deliberate racist comments? Racial discrimination is a psychological action more than anything else. The perpetrators say certain things that may hurt another person, but they say them because they believe them. Even the effects of racial discrimination, at least while studying abroad, are more psychological than anything else. So it only makes sense that your fight against these racial discriminations or microaggressions should be an internal one. Following are certain things to keep in mind while dealing with these kinds of discriminations.

action, and not the person perpetrating it. Instead of saying ‘you’re racist’; say ‘that statement is making a lot of racial assumptions’. This takes the spotlight off the speaker and focuses it on the words.

Remember that it’s not your fault: A lot of microaggression victims tend to think of themselves as the problem. They think they’re being overly sensitive and that their reaction is exaggerated. We’re here to tell you that if you have faced something like this, your reaction is completely valid. If any comment or action made at you makes you angry or sad in any way, and sticks to you even hours later, trust yourself to know that it isn’t your fault. Talk to someone about it, about how it made you feel. It’ll feel much better once you get it all out.

that racial identity is similar to social identity.

Question their statement: When faced with a racially discriminating or microaggressive comment, it usually makes more sense to let it slide than to confront the person about it, especially if they’re close to you. It makes complete sense that you wouldn’t want to risk your relationship with them for what seems to be nothing more than a small comment for them. But if it hurts you, you need to tell them. Question their comment by asking them what they mean by it. It’s when they start to explain it that they’ll realise what they said was offensive. Sure, there will be an awkwardness attached to questioning them about it, but you must remember that the person in front of you making a racially discriminative comment against you probably doesn’t even know that they are. And if you don’t make them think about their comments, they will keep on believing that they are right. Make Your Decision: Just because you can educate someone about racial disparities, does not mean you’re under any obligation to do so. You can if you want to, but if you’d prefer to walk away because you can’t stand them, you can do that as well. We know engaging in a long, serious discussion about race can get exhausting. You don’t speak for your entire race, and you are not expected to handle every indiscreet person who comes your way making racial comments. Pick your battles, as not every person can be educated on their discriminations. Some might just get defensive, and that reaction is just not worth your breath. Talk about the action, not the person: To avoid someone getting defensive about their racial comments, it is recommended to focus on the racial comment or

Be Proud: There are two theories about a strong, proud ethnic identity being able to help you get over discrimination. One theory says that since your ethnicity is a central pillar of your identity, an attack to it can be particularly damaging. The other theory, however, states

“Students approaching education abroad should firstly check all the issues that they have in mind before taking admission, and if possible, speak to the people studying there to get a clearer idea." - Rashi Arora

Social Identity Theory: Social Identity Theory was developed by the pioneering social psychologist Henri Tajfel, whose entire family was killed in the Holocaust. This led to him studying ingroups, outgroups, and the psychology of prejudice, and coming up with his revolutionary theory. Social Identity Theory states that we each affiliate with a variety of possible groups and tend to band together with those like us. Some of the groups we choose - anyone who’s ever been through high school and was a band nerd, skater, druggie, jock, or goth knows how this works. But some of the groups we’re born into. These include gender, sexual orientation, immigrant status, socioeconomic status, disability, and, of course, race. According to Tajfel, once you’re part of an indentified ingroup, you tend to focus on the positive aspects of the group. This both raises self-esteem and invests you in highlighting the positive aspects of your group. And research plays it out. A number of studies across racial groups, like African-Americans, and ethnic groups, like Filipino-Americans or Korean-Americans, have found that strong ethnic identity protects mental health in the face of discrimination. Basically, remembering where you come from and not being ashamed of it, will take you a long way while dealing with discrimination. Another way of dealing with racial discrimination while studying abroad, especially if it is from your fellow students, is to contact your school about it. “I spoke to our course director during our tutorials. And things have been better since he took the required steps,” says Rashi. “Students approaching education abroad should firstly check all the issues that they have in mind before taking admission, and if possible, speak to the people studying there to get a clearer idea. If any problem occurs, always keep your views strong and talk to your class representative about the matter. Be calm and patient, don't lose hope,” she adds. Your education is a very important factor for your career, but it is the experiences that you have when you’re away from your comfort zone that make you the person you’re supposed to be. yi 2016 MAY YOUTHINCMAG.COM 31

FICTIONAL FANTASY Heer Kothari tours us through universities around the world that delve into the world of fiction, giving mundane literary and science subjects a whole new dimension

H

ave you found yourself locked up in the toilet appreciating the fictional charms of an Enid Blyton or a Roald Dahl novel for hours on an end? Most of us remember growing up reading Malory Towers, or Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. There are many who remember details of these stories with outstanding clarity. Some of these tales left quite an imprint on our minds! But what happens as we grow up? We are only left to the residue of our imagination. We can only imagine being offered to take a course in the understanding of sorcery and witchcraft. But what if such a course actually existed and we really could take it up! Wow! This indeed measure up as the opportunity of a lifetime where you can almost live the life of the celebrated J.K. Rowling character, Harry Potter. As we grow up, most of us are smitten by the ways of the world, and go by the daunting yet sensibly, practical route. We take to a course that will add merit to our career. But how about taking to these fictional courses. In their own way it does good to the society and us and are in great demand as well. As we take off from childhood to adolescence, most of us are gripped by the lucrative vices of real life and allow the reel life to take a back seat. But a little 32 YOUTHINCMAG.COM MAY 2016

fiction, a little fantasy and magic will only enable some psychological good and allow us to deal with the unending bouts of stress. In case one finds someone shying from fiction, one must understand that there is a clear evidence of them shoving many joys and other pleasant emotions under the carpet. We all grew up with a little fiction in our lives. If it weren’t for our dreams (which also includes liberal bouts of fiction) we wouldn’t be where we are today! Fiction has a very strapping influence in the life of a human being. As children, fiction plays an imperative role in embodying a steadfast value system in an individual’s life. It helps them to differentiate good from bad, and right from wrong. Fiction courses have many more advantages as compared to the real and the more practical courses. It tends to open the human mind up in a rather unimaginable way. Take the Joy of Garbage course at the Santa Clara University. The course seems to earn some sky rocketing appreciation. The students uncover garbage from different regions, like they seem to unearth some archaeological goodness. The course is a serious one, where students learn the numerous hot and cold rules of garbage. The idea is to instill some sensitivity towards the environment and how society

can deal with waste more efficaciously. If fantasy and magic tops the charts, then Ohio State University, actually conducts a course on ‘Fantasy Literature, Harry Potter.’ The modules of the course are interestingly planned giving insight on the details of the celebrated author, J.K. Rowling, the style of writing she’s incorporated, the literary technique, cultural roots of the novels and a lot more. Students are expected to read the seven versions as part of the syllabus. If talking gibberish intrigues you then there is another exciting subject that is taught at the University of Texas in Austin. The subject fully decodes the language that is used in the Star Trek series. The course titled as, ‘‘Invented Languages: Klingon and Beyond’ actually does exist. Though the course doesn’t include teaching how the language is spoken, it does explore the future possibilities of linguistic theories and also explores the numerous language ideas and interactions around society. Isn’t it surprising to learn how the language has been such a topic of discussion over the years?

If the theories of physics actually bum you out, there is a new way of exploring the subject. The course entitled ‘Science of Superheroes’, taught in the University of California, Irvin, gives you insight on the real principles of physics using superheros and their especially wielded super-powers. Physics can certainly put quite a few science enthusiasts to sleep, but this one seems like a shot of Americano at the wee hours of dawn and keeps you awake all through. In India too we do have fiction explored but in a very subtle manner. Take the University of Chennai for instance. It unearths the riches of Premchand’s text and also explores the literary on-goings of the era too. There are students who also take to the art of reading the future through the study of astrology. The course also includes understanding numerology, the science of tarot cards, Rune stones and a lot more. Interestingly there are other celebrated universities that analyse famous sitcoms to learn of the impact of the viewing of the same on society and children. Often we wonder why go the fictional way! But nonetheless taking the less traveled route only gives a better perspective, instead of going the bookish way. It also gives the students impetus to research a lot more than what they are actually supposed to. It is a more satiating experience as compared to going by the formal method of learning. Fictional learning has not garnered as much popularity in India owing to a number of reasons. However, it is interesting how when one signs up for a fictional course one can comprehend life a lot better than otherwise. Take the super hero’s course for instance! Would one really imagine doing Physics that way? But students who take up to such courses are more open and accepting to try out the newer things. yi 2016 MAY YOUTHINCMAG.COM 33

Workplace Hacks

Managing

Horrible Bosses

A bad boss can be more than enough to make your life miserable, and unfortunately, they are not that uncommon. We tell you ways to manage your horrible bosses

T

here is nothing worse than having a lousy boss. It can drain off the joy of doing your job, leave you feeling like you are not valued, and wondering if it’s time you should find something new. But you know as well as we do that it is not really easy to find a new job, especially in today’s economy. This will probably leave you feeling a lot more helpless as well. It is for this reason that we decided to delve into the depths of this very common problem, and find solutions to it. But there is a silver lining to not having a great boss, too. It teaches you to develop executive leadership skills and practise some real self-leadership. Research says that being overworked is not the reason behind people leaving their jobs. A Danish study of 4,500 public service

34 YOUTHINCMAG.COM MAY 2016

works proved that people don’t leave jobs; they leave managers. There is a common tendency to associate depression and stress with work pressure, but this study confirms that the workload actually has no effect on workplace depression. However narrow-minded and fixed in his ways your boss may be, there are always ways to manage their expectations better. The trick is to think of them as a difficult client. We are hoping that the strategies listed below will help you do exactly so. Some of them may be difficult, but they are a way to take responsibility for your own success, and they will also help you understand how to manage a number of personalities which you will inevitably encounter in your professional life.

Know their ‘Why’ The first thing you need to do to manage your boss better is to understand their prime motivations. Knowing what they do is not enough; you need to know why they do the things they do. The better you understand their reasons and motivations, the better equipped you are to deliver results, manage expectations and avoid confrontational situations. Your boss’ way may not be the most effective one according to you, but sucking it up and doing it their way is the best way to not get into trouble. Once you understand what drives your boss, you can speak his language, and frame your opinions to line up with his core values, concerns and priorities, which will definitely help your current situation. Work around their weaknesses While it may sound counter intuitive to support a bad boss to more successful, there is nothing to be gained by making them look bad. It is not uncommon for them to do that all by themselves, if they are truly as bad as you think they are. Exposing his incompetence will only increase your own despair and may even harm your repute. Help your boss focus on his own natural talents instead. Or you can also proactively work around his weaknesses. For example, if your boss is disorganised, help him organise his work instead of just whining about his weakness. If he’s always late to meetings, offer to start the meeting for him till he gets there. If he’s forgetful or changes his mind frequently, document your interactions with him by sending him emails so you can refer to them if he contradicts himself. Making yourself indispensable and someone your boss can rely on to help him do his job is a valuable asset. By doing what you can to help your boss succeed, you lay a solid foundation for greater success yourself. It may not be an immediate reward, but in the long run, you can never lose by helping others do better than they otherwise would. Take the high road Just because your boss does not behave appropriately, does not mean you should do the same as well. It is very common for people to start feeling entitled to slack off, take longer lunches, lose interest in their work or stop performing well because of their bad boss. Avoid doing it. Keep your mind focused on your performance. Make sure you stay upbeat and energetic while at work. It is very easy to give in to resentment or resignation and heck yourself out of your job mentally, but this only undermines your own integrity and can also put you at a risk of being stamped as a whiner or a slacker, or both. If your boss is prone to shouting, do not shout back. If they are narrow-minded, don’t fall down to their level, however tempting that may be. It is much more rewarding to maintain a calm and professional conduct while dealing with a difficult boss.

Speak up It is very easy to just quit a job instead of having a conversation about why you want to take the exit route. Have the courage to speak up rather than cower in silence for fear of an awkward conversation. No matter how difficult he is, you still owe your boss the opportunity to respond. Don’t prejudge and assume they aren’t able to take feedback, or don’t care about how miserable you are. When you approach them with respect and with a genuine desire to make things work better, you can open the door to whole new levels of trust, collaboration and outcomes. Adapt to their preferences Observe your boss’s behavioural style, preferences and pet peeves. Is he fast-paced and quick to make decisions? Is he slow to think about things, needing time to process information? How does he like to communicate; via e-mail, in person drop-ins, or lengthy memos? The more you can match your style to your boss’s style when communicating, the more he will really hear what you’re saying. Don’t be intimidated by a bully People who bully get their power from those who respond by cowering and showing fear. If your boss is a yeller, a criticizer, or a judge, stand firm. If you’re doing the best job you can do, keep your head held high and don’t give him the satisfaction of pushing you about. Rather ask questions, seek to understand, and work to defuse a difficult situation instead of cowering or responding in anger. It takes practice, but over time you will get better at it and he will look elsewhere for his power kick. Do your research before jumping ship Of course the best way to manage a bad boss is not to have one in the first place. So whenever you are looking to move into a new role in the same company or move to another organization all together, invest some time to get a sense of the culture, the leadership and the sort of management practices that are tolerated and supported. If you are moving internally, make sure you do your networking ahead of time to get a sense of both the environment within the team you might be moving to, and those who are creating it. If you are moving to a new organization, do your research to make sure you’re not jumping from the frying pan into the fire. Sometimes in our desperation to escape a toxic work environment we fail to take notice of the warning signs that the new job we’re taking will only be worse. Have a coffee with whoever you know at the new company to get a sense of the culture, employee engagement, moral, and management style. Investing a few hours up front could spare you a few years of frustration. yi

MF 101

Mutual fund investments are subject to market risks, please read this 101 article by Manil S Dodani carefullybefore investing Monthly battlesFor every college going student (like you maybe), their monthly pocket money is like life blood. You can use it to head out to parties, eat at new places, watch Friday releases and sport some swanky new clothes and shoes (bags, for the fairer sex) and more. At the end of the month one out of the following 4 possibilities will present themselves: 1. You’re left with a small amount of money from your pocket money. 2. You’re left with nothing 3. You have a huge surplus because you borrowed from a friend with a promise to repay the following month 4. You have quite some money left because you saved the previous month and that’s all still there in the piggy bank/wallet/hole in your wall. Out of the above possibilities a rational minded

36 YOUTHINCMAG.COM MAY 2016

individual or a conscious spender would tell you that possibility (1) is ideal and (4), desirable. It’s simple why it’s so. When you’re left with some money it simply means you SAVED. It’s a healthy habit and it means you’re on your way to being a successful money manager. Possibilities (2) and (3) don’t mean you can’t manage your money, it simply indicates that you need to cut a few corners and plan for future expenses – like next week’s club night so you can tide over to the next month comfortably. The next 1000 words are aimed at telling you one of the many ways you can put your savings to work for you and in the process develop a savings habit and some cool moolah. Enter: Mutual Fund Ever thought about what a mutual fund is or how they work? Think you have Rs.500 and you head out to a restaurant for dinner. Currently you can try one or two

dishes on the menu, there’s no guarantee that you’d like them and you can’t possibly order more dishes or be able to finish them once they arrive. But what if, you go the same restaurant with 5 of your friends? Now, you can order 5 times the dishes at roughly the same price per person. To add to this, your steward is an expert at what dishes are the favorites at the restaurant considering he works/eats there every day and will help you order only those. Even if you end up not liking a few dishes that were ordered, chances are you’d like the others owing to the options at hand! Therefore eating in a group at the restaurant (assuming your friends have almost the same appetite as you) is more beneficial than eating alone. This is the founding principle behind a Mutual Fund. A Mutual Fund pools small investors and invests the collected money into shares, government bonds or other financial instruments in order to gain returns for investors. Mutual Funds are run by money managers who invest the pooled money on behalf of the investors, they are qualified professional experts, and are regulated by SEBI.You don’t need to have mutual friends to invest in mutual fund, all you need is a small sum of money, a little risk taking potential and you’re set! Take a SIP | Start small, finish big You might not be too keen to put down a large sum of money to invest in the mutual funds market. There’s nothing to be afraid about, not everyone is or not everyone can. A smarter, safer and more disciplined method of investing into mutual funds is via a SIP. A SIP or Systematic Investment Plan is a way to invest a fixed amount of money in mutual funds, periodically, monthly, quarterly or semi-annually. This allows you to invest in the mutual funds market with a small sum of money giving you the power of averaging your investment cost and benefit from compounding. Investing Rs.1000 monthly in a SIP at a 9% growth rate over 10 years will yield 6.69 lakhs and grow progressively as time passes. SIP’s offer growth over a long term – you’d be able to reap the benefits of these by the time you actually need to, maybe to study abroad or buy a really expensive car. Equity based SIP Plans 1. Reliance Equity Opportunities(Rs.100/monthly) 2. HDFC Top 200 (Rs.500/monthly) 3. Axis Long Term Equity Fund (Rs.500/monthly) 4. Canara Robeco Equity Diversified Fund (Rs.1000/ monthly) (Note: The author and Youth Incorporated do not endorse any of the funds mentioned in this article and claim no liability arising out of investments made in Mutual Funds. Investors are advised to exercise discretion before investing. Caveat Emptor) WHY MUTUAL FUNDS? The prices in an equity market are theoretically affected by demand and supply forces. However numerous external factors such as the Eurozone crisis, to a drought, a terror attack, a natural disaster or unpromising news about a particular industry all cause fluctuations in equity prices. Keeping track of all these factors would require herculean effort and copious amounts of time. Further, quantifying the impact of these real world developments isn’t easy. This is why we need an expert to manage the Mutual Fund. A mutual fund manager makes sure that the investment portfolio is exactly like a gujarati thali – it has

the right amount of spice and sweet to balance the palate while making sure a large number of options are on the plate available for a sumptuous, satisfying experience. While we may understand what was on the thali, however choosing the right options to minimize risk and maximize reward requires both – intelligence and expertise. Fund managers hedge a portfolio to cancel and spread out risk across various sectors and instruments. Steps to invest in a mutual fund STEP 1– Apply for a PAN card and open a bank account. This is a must. Approach your local bank branch to help you with both these tasks, they will guide you through the procedure. If you are below the age of 18, ask your parents to do this for you, they will act as guardians and invest on your behalf and you can claim these funds once you are an adult. STEP 2– Choosing a mutual fund – There are many resources including magazines, websites and finance journals that shed light on the portfolio of a scheme, past performance, fund managers and more. These can be analyzed to first shortlist the ones that seem most attractive, ideally with a low risk rating. Then narrow down funds that have a SIP option allowing small investments monthly. Check the list out for a few suggestions. STEP 3– Choose a broker/ Internet trading platform/ Distributor – You need a broker in order to invest or sell mutual funds. A quick search on Google or on your social friends’ circle can help find one. If you’re comfortable using the internet to trade, head on to www.fundsupermart.co.in and open an online account. You could also approach your local bank branch or well-known distributors such as Bajaj Capital to start transacting. STEP 4– Investing in a mutual fund is only the beginning. Tracking and following up on your fund’s performance regularly is vital. This step allows you to make a conscious entry/exit decision – however in the case of a SIP you don’t have to deal with this – let it roll. However if a fund becomes riskier or is not performing well constantly, you might have to consider reviewing your decision and selling your investment. We’re all in the same NAV Net Asset Value (NAV) describes the fund’s assets and liabilities. The net assets of the fund divided by the number of units will determine the price of 1 unit of the fund (1 share as is commonly interpreted). It is important to note that the fund and brokers will charge some fees in order to allow investments, this will further add to costs of investing in mutual funds. The unit price of a mutual fund is determined every day much like share prices. EXPERT SPEAKInvesting in Mutual Funds can be daunting. Here’s an expert view on how you can start investing young: “Invest early, invest regularly and don’t let price fluctuations bother you, if a fund’s value falls, this presents an opportunity to buy units at a lower price and capitalize on the price rise in the future!”, says Hemal Shah,Mumbai based financial broker. “Invest in mutual funds with a horizon of 8 to 10 years to truly realize gains, in fact a mutual fund is a better option than a PPF (Public Provident Fund) as it provides an open entry/exit option and is a more flexible product”, he adds. yi

SOCIAL ENTREPRENEUR What does the term Social Entrepreneur mean? Is a specific degree or background necessary to embark on social entrepreneurship? Surya

ANSWER ANSWER

Social enterprises are businesses which exist to address social or environmental needs. Rather than maximising profit for shareholders or owners, profits are reinvested into the community or back into the business. Social entrepreneurs are individuals with innovative solutions to society’s most pressing social problems. They are ambitious and persistent, tackling major social issues and offering new ideas for wide-scale change. They are both visionaries and ultimate realists, concerned with the practical implementation of their vision above all else. No particular academic background is necessary for it, but a background in public administration, social work or business administration would be useful.

Some may resort to adventure sports as a getaway, while some others may thoroughly enjoy the adrenaline rush and thus go to the ends of the earth to be a part of this experience. Adventure sports are of various types and are offered in cities across the globe, even in the most remote destinations. Some of the more death defying sports are Free Solo Climbing, where you can climb the Regular Northwest Face of Half Dome, United States, without being harnessed to any safety gear. Then there is Running of the Bulls, where one is dressed in white clothes with a red waistband and neckerchief and the runners are chased by ferocious bulls. The race is one of the deadliest and the most popular sports in Spain and lasts for about a few minutes – that’s what it takes for the bull to decide whether you’re going to live or die. The ‘Cage of Death’ challenges you to plunge into the Darwin’s Crocosaurus Cove, famous for inhabiting the deadliest reptiles ever and survive the terror attack. Even though you are safely enclosed in a glass box, the rush is riveting and equally terrifying. You can try Wing Walking, where the walker is fastened on to the top of an airplane so that he is standing up in the air as the airplane hovers around doing all it can to scare the guts out of him. Highlining is another astounding experience you will have, if you

muster the courage to get on to that rope. It is more a challenge to the mind than to your body. The Cerro Negro Mountain offers Volcano Boarding as a sport you can try. Although most people try to get as far away as possible from the site of a volcano, there are those who are more than willing to defy death. Volcano divers gear up in safety suits and descend a volcano’s 41 degree slope at speeds up to 50 miles per hour. This is as insane as it can get. But if you thought this was as wild as it can get, hear me out on this last one. Crocodile Bunjee Jumping on the Zambezi River in Australia. This one combines two of the deadliest adventure sports, jumping off a dizzying height and heading straight to the territory of man-eating crocodiles. This is sure to give you more than just a pure adrenaline rush. Closer to home, there are adventure sports that families love to indulge in. And what better time than now, to beat the soon approaching summer heat. Dive into crystal clear waters on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands or zip line along ultra strong steel zips in Kerala. There’s so much more than site seeing that the scenic beauty our country offers. River Rafting in Himachal, Mountaineering in Uttarakhand, Trekking in Arunachal, Bunjee Jumping in Kerala, Water Sports in Goa, Paragliding in Maharashtra and Rock Climbing in Madhya Pradesh. If you weren’t aware of this yet, come take a look at some of these sports that we are covering in this issue. We list out what it’s about, the origins, what you need to get going and the best places to try them out, so flip through the pages and make some plans! yi

For storage and carrying, the wing is usually folded into a stuff sack (bag), which can then be stowed in a large backpack along with the harness. For pilots who may not want the added weight or fuss of a backpack, some modern harnesses include the ability to turn the harness inside out such that it becomes a backpack.

LEARN PARAGLIDING The first thing to decide on is the type of paragliding that you want to practice. You can readily start training for this discipline in any of the paragliding schools. Once you master the necessary skills, you can can start on your own. There are several key components to a paragliding pilot certification instruction program. The initial training for beginning pilots begins with some amount of ground school to discuss the basics, including elementary theories of flight as well as the basic structure and operation of the paraglider. Students then learn how to control the glider on the ground, practicing take-offs and controlling the wing 'overhead'.

SOME PLACES YOU CAN TAKE UP A PARAGLIDING COURSE ARE:

aragliding is the recreational and competitive adventure sport of flying paragliders. The pilot sits in a harness suspended below a fabric wing comprising a large number of interconnected baffled cells. This sport is considered to be risky, but the reality is that the safety of practitioners is quite high, especially compared to other adventure disciplines. Of course, you cannot paraglide unless you have undergone extensive training. There are numerous paragliding schools that you can select from to undertake this training.

WHAT TO WEAR? You may have periods of intense activity and other times where you have to sit and wait for the right wind and weather conditions. You may have to contend with the chill factor of the prevailing wind, so it makes sense to go properly prepare. Layers of light but warm shirts mixed with a windproof on top are much better than just one or two thick heavy garments. Wearing an overall or similar is a good idea: if you have some waterproof overalls or a one-piece ski suit, so much better.

WHERE CAN YOU PARAGLIDE IN INDIA? Kamshet lies approximately 102 km from Mumbai and 47 km from Pune. To reach the takeoff sites here, you will have to do a bit of hiking. Solang, Himachal Pradesh: It is a great place to enjoy paragliding in India as it too is located in the mountains. Flying from here will give you a chance to see the picturesque Kullu Valley below. Kunjapuri, Uttarakhand: Kunjapuri is approximately 31 km from Rishikesh. It is quite a popular spot among paragliders.

Carl Mosca Dionisio, made bungee jumping history when he jumped off a 30 m tower attached to a bungee cord made entirely of 18,500 condoms.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED A bungee jump almost entirely consists of an elastic rope, which is actually a braided shock cord, tied to the ankle of the jumper. Most bungee cords are made from natural rubber (used due to its elasticity). Two types of harness are used for a bungee jump – a leg harness, which is joined to the cord, and a body harness. Accidents where participants became detached led many commercial operators to use a body harness, if only as a backup for an ankle attachment.

ike every other adventure sport, Bungee Jumping is as adrenaline filled as any. It involves leaping from a height whilst being connected to a large elastic rope, which is tied to the feet, more specifically, to the ankles. This sport usually takes place from tall buildings, cranes or bridges; however recently, people have also attempted to jump off moving objects like hot air balloons and helicopters. Sweeping down from great heights may seem terrifying but bungee jumping has a good overall safety record.

HISTORY OF BUNGEE JUMPING The first modern jumps were made on the 1st of April 1979 from a height of 250 foot at the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol, by two members of the Oxford University Dangerous Sports Club, David Kirke and Simon Keeling. They were arrested shortly after the incident. However, the first commercial jumps took place in the latter half of the 1980’s, in New Zealand, which then went on to be regarded as the Mecca of modern extreme sport. The Bloukrans River Bridge was the first bridge to be 'bungee jumped off' in Africa when Face Adrenalin introduced bungee jumping to the African continent in 1990. Coverstory on the same belay device. This is done in some rescue situations when one of the climbers is incapacitated or the descent needs to be done quickly. The set-up is similar to a regular rappelling set-up with the first climber is girth hitched off a sling into the descender on the carabiner, and has an auto-block from belay loop of the harness to the rope as a backup. The second rappeller is also girth hitched into the belay device on the carabiner and also anchored into the main rappeller's harness as a back-up.

SIMUL-RAPPELLING OR SIMULTANEOUSLY RAPPELLING This is an advanced technique where two climbers descend the same rope at the same time, or two ropes tied together, and one climber’s weight counterbalances the other. Generally the technique is considered less safe than the regular repelling. However, it’s useful in case of emergencies, or for rapping off opposite sides of a fin or spire where there are no anchor points.

COUNTERBALANCE RAPPELLING

RAPPELLING YOUR WAY DOWN Haven’t you ever looked up at a mountain and wanted to scale it right to the top and then back down, but got scared of a really steep cliff? Rappellers hunt down those cliffs and climb down them

R

appelling, in simple terms, is a controlled descent of a vertical drop, such as a rock face, using a rope. This technique is usually used when a cliff or slope is too steep and is dangerous to descend without protection. Many climbers also use this technique to protect established anchors from damage. Apart from being an adventure sport, rappelling is also very useful for other purposes. For example, rope access technicians use rappelling to access difficult-to-reach areas from above for various industrial applications like maintenance, construction, inspection and welding. Rescue teams are also known for using this method as a way to access injured or stranded victims.

Make sure that you are aware of the proper climbing techniques and are well equipped with the specialised climbing gear that is crucial for completing your re-decided course safely before you make an attempt to do this. Bottom rope climbing and top rope climbing

BOTTOM ROPE CLIMBING Also known as ‘Top Roping’, this technique is based on belaying a climber from the ground or the base of the route. A belay system resembles a pulley, which has an anchor at the top of a climb, through which the rope runs through from the belayer on the ground, to the climber on the ground. The rope is ‘taken-in’, to clear up the slack as the climber moves upwards, so in the event of a fall the climber falls the shortest distance possible.

O

ne of the most physically and mentally demanding sports of all time, rock climbing is all about testing your strengths, endurance, agility and balance along with mental control. Climbers climb up, down or across natural or artificial rock formations with a goal to the summit of a pre-defined route without falling. The required extended endurance is one of the main reason why rock climbers prefer to not climb down the same route they used to climb up, though the fact that the descent is much more dangerous than the ascent can also be a valid reason. Scrambling, another activity involving the scaling of hills and similar formations, is similar to rock climbing. However, rock climbing is generally differentiated by its sustained use of hands to support the climber's weight as

Also known as ‘seconding’, this technique is based on belaying a climber from the top of a route, bringing them up to walk off or continue on to next pitch. DIVE TO THE DEPTHS

Explore the depths of one of the most mysterious bodies on the planet with Scuba Diving, and dive to what can easily be the most exhilarating experience of your life

P

erhaps the most entertaining water sport of all time, Scuba Diving is about a lot more than just diving into the seas (not that just diving isn’t an exhilarating experience in itself). Scuba Diving also offers us a way to discover the life of the mysterious underwater species. A scuba diver uses a Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA) to breathe underwater as he explores the depths of the sea. But unlike other modes of diving, which rely either on breath-hold or on breathing gas pumped from the surface, scuba divers carry their own source of breathing gas, which is usually compressed air. To move around underwater, a scuba diver primarily uses fins, which are attached to the feet. In a nutshell, scuba diving gives you the experience of walking and discovering new territories, only, underwater.

HOW DID SCUBA DIVING ORIGINATE? Scuba diving has been a part of our social experiences since the early twentieth century. Two basic systems

The Andaman and Nicobar islands offer many diving sites that have a terrific variety of marine animals such as Scorpion fish, Octopus, Angler fish, Sharks and Coral reefs as well. The most popular dive sites are The Wall (Havelock Island), Clinque Island (Port Blair) and Fish Rock (Passage Island). It is also home to Infiniti live-aboard, a unique superyacht that offers a super exclusive full-service cruising and diving yacht experience. Founded by Sunil and Vismaya Bakshi, The Infiniti also has a PADI Open Water diver course which teaches people to become certified scubadivers. It is a special qualification that is accepted worldwide and is valid for life. The course is a fairly intensive learning experience including knowledge development, a final exam, intensive training in confined water and then a minimum of four dives in the open sea. The knowledge development focuses on science of diving, there's a lot of theory such as physics, chemistry & biology. Then all this theory is applied in a scientific manner for exploring the ocean which is essentially an unnatural environment for humans to be in. The most important thing about this course is that the learning involved in becoming a certified scuba diver is recognized by many universities around the world officially. You can also list the PADI courses in your CV, as they are eligible for college credit. Students can actually get some college credit for learning diving and then progressing through the various levels.

GOA If you think Goa is all about the usual experience of beaches, clubs, shacks and alcohol, you could not be more wrong. Goa is also home to a number of diving sites that help unearth the underwater treasures of Goa. The most popular dive sites are Uma Guva Reef, Shelter Cove, Locker of Davy Jones and The Jetty.

LAKSHADWEEP ISLANDS A group of 36 islands, located 240 metres off the Malabar Coast are collectively known as the Lakshadweep Islands. Laden with crystal clear water, soft sandy beaches, coral reefs and beautiful marine species, the most popular dive sites are Aggati Islands and Bangarram Islands.

skiing, but the fact is that snowboarding techniques are a lot closer to skateboarding and surfing.

STYLES Snowboarding has three leading styles known as Alpine, Freestyle and Boarder cross.

ALPINE SNOWBOARDING

SKATEBOARD THE SNOW If you’re someone who loves to skateboard, and love the snow, snowboarding was made for you. But there’s a lot more to it than just skateboarding across a different terrain

A

relatively new winter adventure sport in India, snowboarding is quickly picking up as one of India’s favourite adventure sports. Snowboarding is all about maintaining your balance while surfing down slopes with a fiberglass board strapped to your feet. Its is important to have proper practice and knowledge about the technique of snowboarding, before attempting it. Snowboarders surf on snow by transferring their weight from their heels to their toes, as well as from one end of the board to the other. In order to stop the motion, a snowboarder has to push the heels or toes hard to strike the edge of the snowboard into the snow. Modern snowboarding began in 1965 when Sherman Poppen, an engineer in Muskegon, Michigan, invented a toy for his daughters by fastening two skis together and attaching a rope to one end so he would have some control as they stood on the board and glided downhill. Although it might appear that snowboarding is close to

Also known as freecarving, this type of snowboarding takes place on hard packed snow or groomed runs and focuses on carving linked turns, much like surfing or longboarding. There is little to no jumping involved in this discipline. Even the equipment used for Alpine Snowboarding different; it is a ski-like hardshell boot and plate binding system with a true directional snowboard that is stiffer and narrower to manage linking turns with greater forces and speed. A skilled alpine snowboarder can link numerous turns into a run placing their body very close to the ground each turn, similar to a motogp turn or waterski carve. Depending on factors including stiffness, turning radius and personality this can be done slowly or fast. Carvers make perfect half-circles out of each turn, changing edges when the snowboard is perpendicular to the fall line and starting every turn on the downhill edge. Carving on a snowboard is like riding a roller coaster, because the board will lock into a turn radius and provide what feels like multiple Gs of acceleration.

FREESTYLE Freestyle snowboarding is any riding that includes performing tricks. In freestyle, the rider utilises natural and man-made features such as rails, jumps, boxes, and innumerable others to perform tricks. It is a popular allinclusive concept that distinguishes the creative aspects of snowboarding.

BOARDERCROSS Boardercross, also known as ‘Boarder X’ and ‘Snowboard X’, is a very popular but relatively recent winter sport. It started in the 1980s and earned its place as an official Winter Olympic sport in the 2006 Turin games. In Boardercross, around 4-6 riders race each other down a course similar to a motorcycle motocross track, with jumps, berms and other obstacles constructed out of snow on a downhill course. Unlike traditional head-tohead races, competitors use the same terrain, sometimes resulting in accidental collisions.

PLACES IN INDIA This breathtaking sport is developing its wings in North India especially in the Himalayan region and is emerging as a popular amongst adventure enthusiasts. The Himalayas in India have always been the abode for winter adventure sports. The powder snow in this region with multiple natural jumps, steep sections and smooth open surfing areas proves to be perfect for snowboarding. The most popular places in India for snowboarding are Auli in Garhwal, Gulaba in Rohtang and Gulmarg in Jammu & Kashmir.

HOW DID IT BEGIN? The concept of zip lining, which today is primarily an adventure thrill ride, was actually conceived out of necessity. The gravity-fueled conveyance using cables and pulleys threaded between two points was created by workers and residents who needed to quickly transport people and supplies across canyons, rivers, and other impassable areas in remote regions of China, the Costa Rican rainforest, and the Australian Outback. In the Australian outback, zip-lines were occasionally used for delivering food, cigarettes or tools to people working on the other side of an obstacle such as a gully or river. Australian troops have used them to deliver food, mail and even ammunition to forward positions in several conflicts. Zip lining is also known by other names including 'an inclined strong', 'flying fox', and 'Tyrolean Crossing.' Zip lining is quickly becoming one of the fastest growing adventure tourism activities and its spike in popularity can be traced to Costa Rica in the mid-1990s. Today, professional zip lining has gained momentum and adventure tours can be found in India as well as worldwide.

zip-line consists of a pulley suspended on a cable, usually made of stainless steel, mounted on a slope. It is designed to enable a user propelled by gravity to travel from the top to the bottom of the inclined cable by holding on to, or attaching to, the freely moving pulley. Zip-lines come in many forms, most often used as a means of entertainment. They may be short and low, intended for child's play and found on some playgrounds. Longer and higher rides are often used as a means of accessing remote areas, such as a rainforest canopy. Zip line tours are becoming popular vacation activities. They are found at outdoor adventure camps or upscale resorts, where they may be an element on a larger challenge or ropes course. What's not to love about being flung downhill inside a giant inflatable ball?

Z

orbing is the sport of rolling downhill inside an orb, generally made of transparent plastic. It is usually performed on a gentle slope, but in some places it is done on a level surface. As zorbs are buoyant in nature, this sport can also be carried out on water, given that the orb is properly inflated and sealed once the rider is inside. Orbs are of two types, they can be harnessed, which are constructed for one or two riders or non-harnessed which can carry up to three riders.

WHEN DID ZORBING BEGIN? David and Andrew Akers established the first zorbing site in Rotorua, New Zealand. Human spheres have been depicted in mass media since 1990 when the

Gladiators event "Atlaspheres" first aired, albeit with steel balls. In 1994, Dwane van der Sluis and Andrew Akers conceived the idea for a type of sphere in Auckland, New Zealand, calling their invention the "Zorb". With two other investors they created the firm ZORB Limited, and set to work commercializing sphereing. This business model was to develop the activity world-wide via a franchise system. Sphereing is also referred to as Orbing or Zorbing, and Zorbing entered the Concise Oxford English Dictionary in the year 2001 where it was defined as "a sport in which a participant is secured inside an inner capsule in a large, transparent ball which is then rolled along the ground or down hills". Records in Zorbing The Guinness Book of World Records recognizes two records, set over two consecutive days in 2006: • Longest sphereing ride held by Steve Camp who travelled 570 metres. • Fastest 100m in a Zorb – 26.59 seconds. Held by Andrew Flintoff who broke the record as part of his attempt to break 12 world records in 12 hours for BBC Sport Relief.

WHERE CAN YOU ZORB IN INDIA? Della Adventure Park , located at Kunegaon near Lonavala offers three categories – Water Zorbing, Aqua Zorbing and Roller Zorbing. Water Zorbing is not harnessed; instead you are placed inside a plastic ball, just one this time, and have to manually roll yourself across the 100ft long swimming pool. You can run or walk your way across, but whatever you choose, it’s going to be a bit tiring. Aqua Zorbing and Roller Zorbing are similar with the only difference being the medium, i.e., the kind of orb you zorb in. Instead of a round plastic ball, a cylindrical one is used with both ends open, and again one has to manually make their way across the pool or land. Manali is perhaps one of the most famous and prettiest hill stations in India. Known for its scenic views and majestic beauty, this is probably one of the best zorbing destinations. One can enjoy water or aqua zorbing at a reasonable rate at the famous India Gate. The Purana Qila is another famous zorbing spot in Delhi. Situated at the junction of Aru and Sheshnag rivers, Pahalgam is the most beautiful place in Kashmir after Srinagar. Surrounded by snow, zorbing through the streets and slopes of Pahalgam is almost like rolling though the streets of heaven. Once you get over the fact that you feel and look a bit like a hamster in an exercise toy, this sport does pan out to be a lot of fun.

Did You Know

ETHEREUM THE NEW BITCOIN

There’s a shiny new coin in town, and fascinatingly, you can’t touch it. We delve deep into the world of cryptocurrency to tell you all about Ethereum, the world’s latest virtual currency What is Ethereum, a newly discovered element? Ethereum sounds like a new addition to the periodic table, doesn’t it? But if you, like us, were thinking that that’s what it is, both of us could not be any farther away from the truth. If you remember Bitcoin, you know what virtual currencies are all about. For those who don’t, virtual currencies are basically decentralised currencies that are bereft of regulation from central banks. They allow anonymous transactions between consumers and firms. And Ethereum is just one more of that. Joining the virtual gold rush that is already underway is the new game changer, Ethereum. It is a new form of virtual currency, which is wildly rivalling the world’s biggest best known cryptocurrency till now, Bitcoin. And this could not have come in at a better time. Bitcoin is being riven by internal divisions, and has struggled exponentially. Entering the virtual currency market at this time was an amazing move, if you ask us, because

54 YOUTHINCMAG.COM MAY 2016

it has led to Ethereum soaring in value, climbing 1,000% over the last three months. Even beyond the price spike, Ethereum is fast attracting attention from finance and technology giants like JP Morgan Chase, Microsoft and IBM, who have described it as Bitcoin 2.0. For those of you who don’t know, Bitcoin was released in 2009 by a mysterious creator who used the alias of Satoshi Nakamoto. Ethereum, on the other hand, was created in a more transparent manner by a 21-year old Russian-Canadian, Vitalik Buterin. He created the new technology after he dropped out of Waterloo University in Ontario. Buterin raised $18 million in 2014 to fund the Ethereum Foundation through a presale of the software. The Ethereum Foundation basically focuses on supporting the software’s development. Bitcoin V/S Ethereum Due to the anonymity revolving around Bitcoin, the currency was widely used in shady transactions all over the world. Bitcoin’s image is definitely damaged due to the high interest of the black market, as trading of this currency is technically untraceable, which makes Bitcoins a very popular choice with hustlers and the black market. The fall of Mt. Gox, which was one of the world’s largest Bitcoin exchanges was further damaging to its image. These issues had slowed down Bitcoin transactions and were certainly the reason why some people were looking for alternative virtual currencies to support their businesses. However, there are some similarities between the two currencies as well. The Ethereum system is also, like Bitcoin, built on a blockchain in which every transaction is recorded publicly. Such a system allows the exchange of money and assets more quickly and cheaply, when compared to relying on a long chain of middlemen. However, the catch that has enticed fans towards Ethereum is its provision of a way to create online markets and programmable transactions known as smart contracts, in addition to virtual currency. Ethereum: The new shiny coin in town Ethereum is a decentralized platform that runs smart contracts, which are basically applications that run exactly as programmed without any possibility of downtime, censorship, fraud or third party interference. These apps work on a custom built blockchain, which is an enormously powerful shared global infrastructure that can shift value around and represent the ownership of property. Developers are enabled create markets, store registries of debts or promises, along with many other things that have not even been invented yet, and all of this is done without a middle man or the risk of a counterparty. Ethereum recently released its first full public software version, but it is possible for the system to face some of the same technical and legal problems that have stained Bitcoin. A lot of Bitcoin advocates believe that Ethereum will probably face more security problems than Bitcoin, because the system is far more complex than that of Bitcoin. However, Ethereum has faced much less testing, and far fewer attacks than Bitcoin till now. Dozens of functioning application have already been built on Ethereum, which are enabling new ways to manage and pay for electricity, sports and bets.

However, Ethereum is not wrought of problems. There is a strong suspicion around the novel design of the new cryptocurrency. This may lead to intense scrutiny by the authorities, as potentially fraudulent contracts, like ponzi schemes, can be fed directly into the Ethereum system. The system has definitely required the authorities to be on alert, but its sophisticated capabilities have also made the system to be fascinating to executives, especially in corporate America. While IBM has been experimenting with Ethereum as a way to control real world objects in the Internet of Things, Microsoft has also started working on a number of projects that are easing the use of Ethereum on Azure, Microsoft’s computing cloud. An Ethereum Future The 2014 crowdfunded project has been taking over the world of cryptocurrency since its inception, and fast. Along with facilitating for a revolutionary new decentralised system for currency, Ethereum has also brought along with it a number of ways to make using it easier. The Ethereum Wallet, for instance, is a gateway to decentralized applications on the Ethereum blockchain. It allows you to hold and secure ether and other cryptoassets built on Ethereum, as well as write, deploy and use smart contracts. You can also design and issue your own cryptocurrency with Solidity, a new language for smart contracts. You can create a tradeable digital token that can be used as a currency, a representation of an asset, a virtual share, and a proof of membership or anything at all. These tokens use a standard coin API, so your contract will be automatically compatible with any wallet, other contract or exchange also using this standard. The total amount of tokens in circulation can be set to a simple fixed amount or fluctuate based on any programmed ruleset. If you already have ideas that you want to develop on Ethereum, and need funds to bring them to life, you can set up a trustless crowdsale to kickstart your dreams. Using Ethereum, you can create a contract that will hold a contributor's money until any given date or goal is reached. Depending on the outcome, the funds will either be released to the project owners or safely returned back to the contributors. All of this is possible without requiring a centralized arbitrator, clearing house or having to trust anyone. You can even use the token you created earlier to keep track of the distribution of rewards. So what happens once you’ve developed your idea and secured your funds? The process that follows usually requires hiring of managers and a trustworthy CFO who will handle the accounts, run board meetings and basically, do the paperwork. Ethereum has come out with a way to ease this process for you as well. You can just leave all of it up on your Ethereum contract. It will collect proposals from your backers and submit them through a completely transparent voting process. One of the many advantages of having a robot run your organisation is that it is immune to any outside influence, as it’s guaranteed to execute only what it was programmed to. And because the Ethereum network is decentralized, you'll be able to provide services with a 100% uptime guarantee. Now doesn’t that sound like a future you could totally see yourself being a part of? yi

Relationships

Eat. Sleep.Cheat.

Re eat. With cheating becoming the new normal in modern relationships, Palak Kapadia lists telltale signs to identify that your partner might be cheating on you and how to deal with it

W

hen it comes to love, most of us have rosy pictures of ‘happily-ever-after’s. We feel love is an invincible force immune to all evil. And then, we have our naivety shattered. As much as we would love to believe in fairytale romances, it cannot be denied that cheating is real and it indeed does happen. A partner cheating is one of those things we feel will always happen to someone else. Till it happens to us. If you have an inkling that your partner could be cheating on you, here are some things you should watch out for:

2. His behavior is out of the ordinary Do you see him suddenly breaking routines that he has been following for years? Or he suddenly starts using a phrase very frequently that he has never used before? Those are some major signs to watch out for.

1. You sense it The telltale sign of a cheating partner? Having to ask the question in the first place. It is an old belief that if you feel you are being cheated on, you probably are. If your instinct is telling you that something is amiss, that is one of the biggest indicators of trouble in paradise.

4. He is increasingly secretive He pays more attention to his phone than he does to you. When he goes to the washroom, he takes his phone along. He has to leave the room to take calls. These are definite signs of betrayal.

56 YOUTHINCMAG.COM MAY 2016

3. She’s light about the details Instead of coming home and filling you in on a minuteby-minute update of her day or all the gossip after her Girls’ Night Out, she barely divulges any details anymore. She seems more secretive and cagey. Major uh-oh.

5. Her preferences are completely new When someone spends enough time with someone else, they begin to adopt their views, or at least understand them. If your girlfriend is interested in things that she hated before, perhaps someone else is influencing her more than usual. 6. He is always MIA Your significant other is constantly off the radar. You have no clue about his whereabouts, he doesn’t answer his phone and only much later comes up with excuses like he was busy or sleeping. Well, this might be true a few times. But if you’re constantly facing this kind of a situation, it is perhaps time to confront him about it. 7. The little signs Cheating is something that can’t be very well disguised. If your boyfriend or girlfriend is cheating on you, you are sure to come across little signs that are telltale. Their car seat is adjusted differently from how you remembered leaving it, you come across unexpected shopping receipts or restaurant bills. These are some major indicators that you shouldn’t ignore. 8. She rationalizes cheating So, you happen to mention to her that your friend’s girlfriend is cheating on him and how terrible it is. But instead, she says, that maybe she didn’t love him anymore or that it was just in the moment; anything that rationalizes her cheating on him. This is nothing but her own defense mechanism kicking in subconsciously. 9. He has completely withdrawn from your friends and family Your girl friends thought he was an amazing conversationalist. Your family absolutely adored him and loved to spend time with him. Needless to say, he too enjoyed hanging out with your friends and family. But off late, he doesn’t really jump at the thought of socializing with them. 10. She is discreet about her schedule Any question from your end about her plans for the day is met with vague, non-committal answers. She no longer divulges where she is going to be or what she is going to be doing. On the other hand… 11. She is overly interested in your schedule She is way too interested in your schedule and what you plan to do. The sudden extreme interest seems weird and not like her to you. 12. He thinks you’re insecure If you happen to confront your partner about any of the above; he blames you for being too insecure. If in your

heart of hearts, you know that this isn’t stemming from insecurity, it is time you had a serious conversation with him. People cheat on other people for a lot of reasons. But no reason really justifies the act or makes it less hurtful. It has the capacity to create a permanent rift between two people. If you are someone who has been cheated on, here are a few tips on how to deal with it 1. Don’t blame yourself Even if you have been less than perfect in the relationship, them cheating on you is never your fault. Every relationship has issues. Cheating on your partner isn’t a solution for any of them. 2. Confront them when you are ready As unpleasant as it sounds, you know you have to address the elephant in the room at some point. It is the best for both of you to be upfront about it and talk it out. This is the most crucial step and probably the only chance to salvage the relationship. 3. Don’t tell everyone about it Yes, you are hurt and angry and want to vent it out. But telling the whole world and their neighbor about it isn’t going to help anyone. In fact, if you do intend to give the relationship another shot, this might just make things worse. 4. Be vocal about your feelings Even if it does feel embarrassing, don’t play nonchalant and pretend it isn’t a big deal. Let your partner know about the angst that you are feeling. If they don’t know it, it will be very difficult for you to move ahead as a couple 4. Rebuilding trust If your partner does express regret over what he or she has done and the two of you decide to reconcile, you have to rebuild your trust in your partner. Talk it out with him or her and find out why exactly they cheated. 5. Let time heal Most importantly, understand that forgiveness is a process. Don’t feel the pressure to forgive your partner immediately, even if they are desperate to win back your trust. It is completely okay to take your time to heal. 6. Know when to end it Even after every effort to make things work if you just can’t seem to be able to move on, let it go. Some things cannot be forgiven. Know when it is time to leave it behind. At the end of the day, no relationship matters as much as your peace of mind does.

NEW REALITIES When life gets boring, step into a digital wonderland with virtual reality What is Virtual Reality? Virtual reality can be defined as the creation of a simulated environment with which users can interact and experience a feeling of being present in that simulation. Opinions differ on what virtual reality could be but the most apt definition could be the one from howstuffworks.com – A true VR experience should include:  Three-dimensional images that appear to be life-sized from the perspective of the user  The ability to track a user's motions, particula¬rly his head and eye movements, and correspondingly adjust the images on the user's display to reflect the change in perspective The primary aim of a virtual reality environment is to make you feel “immersed”, that is, you must feel part of the reality that is present in front of you. In such an experience you would experience a virtual breadth and depth of an environment. Imagine yourself sitting on your bed wearing a VR headset, I could program the headset to show you a blank white room with infinite space in it and you could walk “inside” the room with certain hand and leg movements! This is just a small possibility that isn’t entirely productive or meaningful. But Virtual Reality technology is exciting primarily since it is literally malleable. It can be applied to an array of possibilities simply because it involves the creation of a fictional interface.

Oculus Rift Oculus Rift is the probably the first “cool” virtual reality headset. Funded via Kickstarter and then snapped by Facebook for $2 million, Oculus Rift has the first mover’s advantage in this market. The Oculus Rift plugs in to your computers USB and DVI ports and renders 3D imagery with the aid of its stereo screens. Oculus Rift is out now and sells for about $599, it’s expensive but it’s worth the price. Refresh rate: 90Hz (this is the vital stat when it comes to VR headset, the higher it is, the lesser lag you experience)

Samsung Gear VR Samsung Gear VR is powered by VR daddy Oculus. Remember, this VR headset works only with a Samsung smartphone namely Galaxy Note5, S6 edge+, S6, and S6 edge. The Samsung VR doesn’t disappoint on both, design and performance.Be sure to buy this if you’re looking to adopt VR technology a little earlier than the others. Content is mostly free, but games and other Oculus content come at a price. The Samsung Gear VR retails for Rs.7,899 on Flipkart.

Playstation VR headset Sony’s Playstation VR is a monster. Not only does it have a higher refresh rate than the Vive and the Rift (120Hz) it also sports a 5.7 inch OLED thereby letting it display a stunning VR experience. Playstation VR headset is set to launch in October this year along with some massive Sony Playstation product launches. Expected price is about $399

Google Cardboard If you’d like a cheap, pocket friendly way to experience virtual reality then Google’s Cardboard is for you. It is basically a cardboard container that lets you pop in your smartphone and then uses your phone’s sensors to track your head movements. One small problem could be sweat though. Price: $17! approximately (only)

TAKING YOU BEYOND THE GAME

I

n this age of instant gratification, why should playing sports for leisure be so hard to coordinate? From achieving a quorum to booking a ground, playing a team game presents a series of off-field challenges. To take the sweat out of coordinating the game, entrepreneur Viraj Velinker drew up a roadmap for a pick-up sports app that would address the needs of everyday athletes like himself — and so the PlaySports mobile app was created. Designed to function as a social network for sports enthusiasts, the app is available this month on both iOS and Android platforms. Getting started is as simple as downloading the app on your smartphone and signing in. Once you have joined the PlaySports community, you can form a team of your own with friends across a range of sports including cricket, football, basketball, tennis, yoga and billiards.

MONTH

Start a game at any location, simply by dropping a pin on MapView. Apart from connecting with like-minded people who share a common love for the sport that you play, you will never have to cancel another game because you are short of participants! Enabled with live chat functionality, the PlaySports app allows you to exchange updates and coordinate the game seamlessly with your team, without having to toggle between apps and windows. In ‘Quickplay’ mode you are able to view the games currently being played or scheduled in your vicinity. You needn’t be part of an existing team to sign up for a game. Simply choose your preferred game and join it instantly. Filters allow you to select your favoured location and define your available time slots, besides receiving notifications on new games popping up within those parameters.

I

could not tell you if I loved you the first moment I saw you, or if it was the second or third or fourth. But I remember the first moment I looked at you walking toward me and realized that somehow the rest of the world seemed to vanish when I was with you.” ― Cassandra Clare The savant observer of human life and raconteur in ‘Dil Dhadkne Do’ -(in simple terms, the voice over of Aamir Khan) looks on as hero Ranveer Singh sets his eyes for the first time on Anushka Sharma’s svelte bikini figure swimming across the pool. She glances back, water dripping sexily down her back and it’s a long enduring moment as their eyes lock in a riveting awareness of each other. His droopy eyes perk up as Pluto the raconteur takes in the palpably electric moment as he wryly remarks “yeh pehli nazar mei pyar hota kya hai? Kisi ko dekha, brain mei kuch chemical changes aye, nas nas mei khoon ki rafter tez hui, sare badan mei lehare si uthne lagi. To dil ki dhadkan bhi thoda fast ho gayi!” He explains sagely, that in the beginning there are very few words, it’s all about stolen glances and chemical reactions. The moment extends over intense lengthy minutes. My question here is, does this beguilinginstant mutual love at first sight exist? Is it practical or just transient, lusty chemistry at work without the foundations that test the trials and angst of love? If one looks at it from each different point of view there is a veracity in all of them. I do believe, (maybe I am a romanticist at heart), that there is that powerful intense something that magically creates the magnetic connection instantly with someone you have never seen before in your life, while another leaves you cold. You feel a beautiful palpable chemistry akin to a beautiful idyllic park of sorts with an exceptional someone. Colpo di fulmine. The thunderbolt, as the Italians call it. They say it’s not about a situation but about the lens you take to a situation.Recently in a book somewhere, a father tells his son, “There’s no big deal when strangers get married. It is you teens who think a lot about it. A marriage is arranged- one night together- and they’re in love!!!” Wow! How insensitive? It gets worse! Recently at a dinner this man ensconced me inescapably in a corner and directed a long monologue that began with “Ha!” He didn’t understand this ‘love-shove thing – marriage was this cultural requirement, a functional process to bring forth offspring.

I squirmed out of this arid scenario to the bonhomie of a friend and was happy to continue the topic with quite optimistic views. He has been through the love at first sight situation to a culmination of happy and enduring matrimony. He felt that love at first sight is ‘inexplicable’- it transforms your life in a moment into a splendored garden. Imagine, you don’t know this person, she is not film star beautiful, without extraordinary appurtenances. But across a crowded room, there is this magnetic connect. And it is often both sided enough to make him wonder if it is not some kind of a carryover from previous lifetimes. I myself wonder too. How else does one explain this gravitating to each other in a single momentary encounter? This compelling desire to connect. Certainly spiritual masters like the Dalai Lama speak of the interconnectedness of all human beings. And now science biologists state that one in three persons are connected. The scientific intricacies of this interconnectedness I am not sure I can comprehend. Though unexplainable, it is quite thrilling, to go through a possibility in the mind’s background that you may somewhere in a magical moment meet this soulmate in an intensely magical moment. No doubt many an unmarried biddy of forty-three sitting on the shelf, is consoled with the famous platitude, “There is someone special waiting somewhere for every someone in the world, and suddenly, magically he will enter your life and in a second you will know.” She waits on until seventy three. The wonder, nowadays, is that the biddy at seventy three is indeed having that magical momentary encounter with that special someone finally. And there is the rainbow ending of happy matrimony. There is no age barrier for love at first sight, or sell by date, for love at first sight. It’s happening more and more at every stage and every age. Anytime is love at first sight time. Vive La romance. yi Read

Summertime Madness All your friends are out of town and you’re stuck at home this vacation? Don’t sigh. Pearl Mathias brings you things you can do at home this holiday season

TAKE A WALK The weather may be hot as hell during the day, but summer evenings are a lovely time to step out of the house and take in some fresh air. You may be lazy at first and not willing to step out of the house when you’re wrapped up in comfort and technology, but once you do, you’ll see how refreshing and invigorating it is. The breezy outdoors will freshen your mind and bring you home feeling much lighter. It’ll also help if you leave your phone at home.

EARN SOME BUCKS If you’ve got plenty of free time on your hands, then this is a good opportunity to spend it earning some money rather than whiling it away. Research a few places that you would like to work and apply to them. It’s a chance to meet new people and also learn various new things at the workplace. Experience always helps. It may help you discover what you really want to do and what you don’t.

MEET NEW PEOPLE It sucks when you’re friends are away and busy having a good time. But don’t let that be reason enough for you to not get out of your home and meet new peeps. I’m sure you’re contented with all the friends you have, but it doesn’t hurt to form new friendships. When you’re at the gym or dance class, strike a conversation with the person beside you and take it from there.

VOLUNTEER Summer holidays are the best time to go out there and give off your time and talents to those who need it. You could volunteer at a local organisation that supports a cause that matters to you or choose from a variety of associations out there. Teach for India and related such organisations are more than willing to take in volunteers.

TRY SOMETHING NEW If you’ve never cooked or baked before, this could be a nice time to experiment. On the same lines, if you’ve always wanted to go trekking or play a new sport, go for it.

TAKE UP A CLASS/HOBBY If you’ve been considering learning some new moves or taking up yoga class, summer time is the best. There are tons of classes you could take up in your neighbourhood itself. Alternatively, you could also spend some time taking up hobbies that you haven’t had much time for.

SPEND TIME WITH OTHERS Now that you have lots of free time, you can catch up with old school friends who you otherwise just text message. You can also visit family members and check up on them, it would bring them a lot of delight. If you know of any neighbours who live alone, you could stop by their place and just talk to them for a bit.

READ Catch up on the new releases as well as classics that you’ve heard so much about. If you’re not so much of a reader, then catch up on movies that you’ve missed the past year. Look up lists of must read books and must watch movies and shows, something interesting might catch your interest.

LEARN A SKILL Take up a computer class or sessions on personality development and public speaking. If there’s an area you feel you can work on and improve, then invest your time in it. These skills won’t take too long to master but they’ll surely take you a long way when you take up a job or otherwise.

DO NOTHING It’s your holiday time. You’ve worked hard all year and now is your time to sit back and relax. Pamper yourself all you want. Go to bed late and stay tucked in till late noon. Keep all that you’re worried about (e.g. your results) aside and just spend this time on yourself and what you want to do. Even though there are a lot of things you will want to do, take some time out to do nothing as well.

Mind over Matter

While exploring the art of magic, the Emperor of magic, Ugesh Sarcar talks to Pearl Mathias about how fascinating the mind is and what performing tricks means to him

66 YOUTHINCMAG.COM MAY 2016

HOW DID YOU COME ABOUT MAKING THE DECISION TO PURSUE MAGIC AS A CAREER? As a kid I watched my dad perform and was awed by it. At the age of 8, I decided that I would be the next biggest name in magic. Ever since then, I've pursued magic as my passion and career. When he was performing I would sit in the audience and see him do this cool stuff and I was always awed and I wondered how it was done. There was no defining moment as such when I realized this is what I wanted to do. Over time, being present at shows and watching him perform, I knew this is what I wanted to get into. I did learn magic from my dad. There is a complete INK Talk about my experience, which you can check out on my YouTube Channel.

YOU’VE COME UP WITH A BRAND NEW SHOW ON MENTALISM, CALLED YOUR MIND IS MINE. TELL US A LITTLE MORE ABOUT THE CONCEPT OF THIS SHOW AND HOW YOU CAME UP WITH IT. After reaching the pinnacle of Street Magic, it was time to reinvent myself and take things to the next level. Mentalism is a more advanced form of magic, involving mind reading, mind manipulation, predictions, etc. Your Mind is Mine, as the title indicates, is a 75 minute powerpacked show, where your mind is very literally mine, as I take you on a mental rollercoaster ride, right in your seats. You are left at the edge of your seat, laughing and scratching your head trying to figure out what just happened! It's pure entertainment for the intellectuals, the smarter you are, the more you'll enjoy!

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR SHOW ON UTV BINDAAS, 3RD DEGREE? TELL US A LITTLE MORE ABOUT IT. When you want to take something new to the masses, there's a very simple device: the television. I believe in creating history with anything that I take up. When I decided that I was ready to showcase my art to the world, I wanted to do it big. India had never been exposed to street magic before and what better way to throw limelight on it than take it to the public right in their homes?

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A YOUNG PERSON WHO WANTS TO PURSUE MAGIC AS A CAREER? The basic thing you would need is commitment and your mindset. If you have your mindset in place, then you just have to build up on your skills. I have taught people from different backgrounds, people who weren’t able to speak in English, people who have never performed on stage or had a background in magic. So if you have your basic skill sets in place, then you just need to invest in them and work on it. It would be cool to say that being a magician is something that runs in your blood, but it’s far from that. It can be acquired by anyone who wants to put their mind and work in that direction. Other than that, if you’re really serious about taking this up, then figure out a way to get to Bangalore and enroll in the All India Magic Academy Trust. The institute takes care of your magical training, finding you the best possible platforms to display your talent and nourishing your career as a magician. There you learn from the Masters of Magic, the King of Arts. yi

WHAT WERE SOME OF YOUR MOST CHALLENGING MAGIC ACTS TO PERFORM TILL DATE? WHAT ABOUT THEM WAS SO CHALLENGING? Every act I am performing is the most challenging one at the time, because I want it to work! Currently the challenge is the Cricket Match Predictions that I am working on, which you will get to experience soon. While performing in the past, there were many instances when I almost died, I was drowned alive and buried alive. So it’s a part and parcel of the work I’m engaged in. When I’m designing and conceptualizing an act, that part is the most challenging, as to how we’re going to go about it, how do I put things in perspective, how is the mind going to grasp and think, the step by step journey; so every little thing becomes very challenging. Those are the times when my team sees me in a weird mode, I’m either staring at something for long or I just nod to myself. But they know at the end of all of that, I come up with something. WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL MAGICIANS? WHAT DO YOU APPRECIATE MOST ABOUT THEIR WORKS? I definitely admire and love my dad and David Copperfield, who is also an amazing performer. It is their grand showmanship that I appreciate the most.

RAPID FIRE •IF YOU WEREN’T A MAGICIAN, WHAT WOULD YOU BE ? I’d be trying to figure out how to become one •ONE THING YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT ? Magic •YOUR FAVORITE INCANTATION ? It’s all in the mind •WHAT DO YOU LIKE DOING OTHER THAN PERFORMING ? Fishing, photography and collecting gems, not in terms of precious stones, but more on the lines of meeting people. •A MAGIC TRICK YOU WISH REALLY HAPPENED ? People would be more compassionate and considerate with each other, which would solve every other problem out there

SHADES OF THE YEAR

The Pantone Colours of 2016 – Rose Quartz and Serenity Blue – have had a major impact on our runways. Lakme Fashion Week’s Gen Next Designer Agrima Batra tells us how to incorporate these shades in your college wardrobes

I

s it a baby girl or a baby boy? For the very first time it’s both for proud parents Pantone, who happily announced their baby of the year, I mean colour of the year as Rose Quartz and Serenity. For being a sugar enthusiast and an aspiring designer, life doesn’t really get better than the colour doctor prescribing cotton candy for your palette and your palate. This established combination of colours is now becoming ubiquitous, signaling at greater universal issues such as peace and gender equality. Being the youngest designer at LFW this season was a dream come true for the simple reason that I was able to share with the world what I truly love doing. An avid practitioner of positivity, I believe that clothes are not just tools of enhancement, but in fact an extension of one’s aura. Inspired by every breathing moment and the mechanism of life, my design ideas root from emotional, philosophical and cosmic energies. I find stimulus in decoding the unconcealed from the concealed. In the process not only enriching my design but also deepening the meaning of life, assisting me to augment my persona. My Spring/Summer 2016 collection, ‘To the Stars and Back’. Inspired by the oracle of the night - the stars, I bring to you a modern twist on highly sophisticated and chic day to eveningwear. A recent graduate of Parsons School of Design, New York, keeping up with Pantone is almost like checking the weather forecast before stepping out for us. So of course, it goes without saying that not only my collection this season but even my wardrobe contains two of my favourite, and the world’s favourite colours this year. Here are some easy and chic ways to include this cotton candy colour palette in your wardrobe – head to toe.

1. If only Indian’s could get a tropical tan, we’d all be

soaking it in… Choose a rose quartz baseball hat or wrap a serenity scarf over your head in a retro way, and you are sure to protect yourself in the sun in a casual but yet trendy way. 2. No better way than to invest in a pair of rose quartz reflector aviators. Simple and subtle, just what you need for the season. 3. Stay away from the ruby woo’s and burgundies, the temperature calls for your lips to be kissed with shades of baby pink! 4. A blank canvas always works best with every colour. Put on your white avatar and accessorize with just a dash of serenity or rose quartz. 5. A lover of colours, take my advice on this – nothing looks better than tan worn with rose quartz or serenity. 6. Put these colours on your nails or wear them on your feet, you’re sure to look fresh and fine. 7.Since it’s prints galore this season, you could pair a vintage floral skirt with a crisp serenity shaded shirt.

THE HOLIDAY RULE BOOK

Beauty

The holidays are here and if you haven’t already been prepping, here’s your cheat sheet to help you get through

1

GET YOUR CARDIO GOING Your exercise routine cannot consist of getting off the sofa and walking to the fridge. Try packing up two, 30-45 minute sessions a week to help work through the layers of fat that accumulate over the holiday period.

TONE DOWN THE MAKE-UP

2

Trim your routine down to four or five essentials. Be sure to include a sunscreen, foundation, blush, luminiser for your eyelids and cheekbones and a curler. Swap your high shine gloss for a lip balm with SPF properties.

3

FEED THY BELLY Opt for foods that are fresh, delicious and equally healthy. Blueberries are good skin protectors, kiwis help keep your bones, teeth and heart healthy, almonds add a glow to your skin, corn helps protect the skin from sun damage and watermelon is not only yummy but it adds to the water content of your body.

4

WAXING WOES

Schedule a wax with foresight so that the grow out period doesn’t affect your beach look. Whether you choose to go the traditional way or opt for an epilator or razor, be sure to moisturize your skin post the removal.

5

BUFF IT UP Once a week, try using a natural bristle brush before showering, it helps slough off deal cell layers on the body. It helps to smoothen and tighten the skin, adding a glow to it. Ideally, start at the feet and work your way up, firmly. Make sure to moisturize later.

Well, every kick-ass show starts with a kick-ass soundtrack. Akshit Chawla brings you such remarkable theme songs that commence some of greatest and glorious shows on television

FRIENDS – I’LL BE THERE FOR YOU BY THE REMBRANDTS

Undoubtedly ‘I’ll be there for you’ is the most iconic television soundtrack ever. This soft rock track by ‘The Rembrandts’ starts off with an amazing guitar riff that won’t stop ringing in your head once you hear it. The lyrics to this song are heart touching and they perfectly capture the emotions of love and affection in a humoristic and whimsical way. This song has always been the signature song for all friends around the world. If you are a friends fan, you can’t help but reminisce in the happy memories of the show.

SUITS – GREENBACK BOOGIE BY IMA ROBOT You couldn’t get a better song for this TV series than the Greenback Boogie. This pop song has some crazy beats mashed with rock guitar which can hook you up to the song forever. This wacky song is all about money and dance. The lyrics somehow talk about living a larger than normal life in a metaphorical and whimsical way; earning and spending the greenbacks (paper currency used in 1860s in U.S.A.).The song compliments the hard working lives of Harvey and Mike – the lead characters of the show.

GAME OF THRONES - GAME OF THRONES THEME BY RAMIN DJAWADI

Now this is one of the most recognizable instrumentals of the modern era. The song is cold and chilling and guarantees to snatch your attention. The music is composed by Ramin Djawadi who composes the other tracks used in show as well. Like most of the modern theme songs, there are no lyrics, just the music. The song is highly recognized and appreciated.

THE BIG BANG THEORYBIG BANG THEORY THEME BY BARENAKED LADIES

This masterpiece by the Canadian rock band Barenaked Ladies has been a big hit for the band as well as the show. Ed Robertson from the band was asked to write the song after the producers of the show attended a concert by Barenaked Ladies (BNL). Ed had read the book "Big Bang" by Simon Singh which helped him write this song about the formation of the wonderfully vast universe. This powerful track has a fast tempo and is full of energy. The catchy and powerful lyrics are inescapable and completely steal the show.

ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK – YOU’VE GOT TIME BY REGINA SPEKTOR

‘You’ve got time’ is a brilliant piece of work which is critically acclaimed and appreciated. The fact that this track was nominated in 2014 for the Grammy for ‘Best Song Written for Visual Media’ speaks for itself. This alternate rock music is blessed with the marvelous voice of Regina Spektor which makes the intro of ‘Orange is the New Black’ a hard one to skip. 2016 JANUARY YOUTHINCMAG.COM 71

I

f you want to immerse yourself in a book that is real, raw, honest and out there, Boys Night Out is the one you need to reach out for on the shelf. This books proves to be an easy and quick read, all the while exposing the real desires and happenings in the minds and lives of people the world over. Set in the city of Mumbai, author Manoj Jain explores the daily lives of eight people, no different than you and me. He delves deep into the human sexuality and what is it that really makes us do what we do. He examines their sexualities and tries to reason out what it is that attracts us to another, even though it may not always be the best thing for us at the moment. When asked about how he expected the response to his plainly put forth work would be, Manoj said, “I think India is waiting for this genre of books that talk about real people with raw, human feelings. The book is explicit in parts which is bound to be there if you are writing on the hidden and dark side of humans, on sexualities, fantasies and fetishes. We

have fantastic Indian authors and the prime genre being written about is on Indian mythology and Gods , all very relevant and interesting but the Indian psyche has always been interested in sex and psychology- we did give the world the Kama sutra after all.” The book opened to some great reviews and it took off nicely as well. Readers mainly commented on how the book exposed a slice of life in urban India, that it was true and believable and poignant and riveting. People commented that

they identified with different aspects of the characters, after all, isn’t this what a writer hopes to achieve? Through Boys Night Out, Manoj tries to highlight that every person has a darker side to them, a shadow as called by Jung, which is kept hidden inside them. Coming to terms with this inner self is the first step to being comfortable with oneself. The book is littered with psychological theories mixed in the story like Freudian concepts of oral personalities; it has sexual orientations discussed as well as concepts such as the giver and taker. Currently, Manoj Jain is working on his second book, which will be published towards the end of the year. It continues its exploration of different psychological and sexual aspects such as dealing with impotency, the psychology of smoking, gay husbands and voyeurism. It also takes on the delicate and difficult relationship between fathers and sons. So, if you’re in for a night that turns the lives of eight people around, this book is a must read. It opens the door to a whole new plethora of emotions, mostly mixed. There’s a high chance you might relate to one or more of the characters in there.

LIGHT HOUSE CAFE

MIGHTY SMALL

CUISINE: Continental, Thai, Italian, Mexican, Mediterranean BITES AND BOOZE: Situated on a prominent path in Worli, this quaint cafe promises to be as lovely on the inside as it could get. As I walked in, I could feel the raw, rustic ambience which emanated from the industrial style architecture of the place. The mellow lighting with a touch of steel pipes and glass jars brilliantly adds to the look they are trying to achieve. We began our dinner with the BMW250 and the Oh My Bulbs shots which were layered so beautifully with whiskey and Baileys. The Bhagira is a signature cocktail of the cafe which is named after the head bartender. It went down beautifully with the Jerk Chicken which was cooked to perfection. Another must try out here is the Anda Gadbad, which comprises of a lightly cooked omelette and stuffed with delicious kheema, served with a spicy gravy on the side. I was told that this is the kitchen in town which serves the Chicago style pizza, but I must warn you about the massive proportion. What’s not to miss is the Romantic Tea, it's flavours will simply blow your mind. We ended with the melt in the mouth Chocolate and Hazelnut Mousse, which was rich and delightful. FAB OR DRAB: This cafe is a must visit for plenty of reasons. For starters, the multiple menu’s are extensively elaborate and they keep getting yummier as the day progresses. The food and the drinks are equally original in their making as well as the presentation and I’m sure you won’t go there just once. ADDRESS: 9 Ground Floor, Sunville Banquets, Dr A nnie Besant Road, Siddharth Nagar, Worli, Mumbai - Pearl M athias

CUISINE: Continental BITES AND BOOZE: The delightful ambience of this place is well suited to children and elders alike. The walls and seats are brightly colored, just like their wide range of drinks. They have a separate drinks bar for those without their kids and families as well as a desert bar for kids, stacked with cookies and cupcakes of different kinds. We began with the sangrias, of which the Jalapeno and Olives is a must try. The Apple and Cinnamon sangria will be much appreciated by red wine lovers. For starters, we began munching on Disco Idlis which was absolutely lovely. They were so light to taste and coated with fresh spice. The other lovely appetizers were the Chicken 65 and the Koliwada Popcorn Chicken which had their own unique taste. But, what we strongly recommend would be the Crispy Calamari. With a beautiful golden texture and lightly fried that you almost don’t believe they are, these juicy calamari’s are so well cooked, you won’t want to share. The Nasi Goreng Fried Rice served in a box had a refreshingly new taste, this one is for all the peanut flavor lovers out there. The Amritsari Chole and Kulcha was easy on the palate and served in a very out of the kitchen manner. The Flame Grilled Chicken was so well cooked and relished within minutes. We ended our meal with the Mint Choco Chip Crazy Shake, served in a jar. The brownie pieces and crushed mint meringue were just added treats. FAB OR DRAB: All in all, if you’re at Smaash, this place is a must visit. Right from the ambience to the diverse menu, you must plan a meal here, you won’t be disappointed. O:H CHA - KITCHEN & BAR CUISINE: Thai, Chinese, Malaysian BITES AND BOOZE: We entered this gorgeous spot in the city on a Monday evening for dinner. With one entire wall left bare for a projection of the current match, and a special IPL menu to match, O:h Cha can be called the perfect place for a leisurely meal over a cricket match. We started our meal with a round of drinks for the table. The Orange Candy Margarita, a tequila based drink served with a orange popsicle was almost like childhood served with alcohol, and their 3 Jacks, a mixture of Jack Daniels, Jim Beam and Johnny Walker mixed with Sprite and lots of ice was a whiskey drinker's dream come true. We decided to try out the IPL menu for our starters, and we have to say, it was the best decisio we could have ever made. We had a wonderful first course with Pandya Barbeque Wings, Grilled Chicken and Prawn Shanghai Dumplings and Cheese Chilly Toast Rayudu Style. The Hoi Yun Yum Okra Prig, an assorted of crispy fried okra and french fries with a smattering of spices can easily be classified as one of the best okra dishes we have ever been served till date.
