“Every day is a fashion show and the world is your runway” – Coco Chanel

O

ne can never get enough of fashion. If you look, more than half of us are consumed by what we wear and the way we look. I still recall when we used to wait for someone to come back from overseas and bring us our favourite fashion goodies, or had to hunt shady imported shops for any branded clothes, shoes and perfumes that one desired. Now that we are completely spoilt for choice, not only do we have every world-class, haute couture as well as high street designer stores across the country, but more than anything, we have our Indian brands going big and making us proud. So over a chatty dinner one evening with my old friend Sonali, who happens to be a merchandiser with Aza Fashion, she shared how amazing it was to interact with Manish Malhotra and how beautifully he spoke about his journey so far. This got me thinking about how little people know about the fashion and beauty industry. One would wonder about what this world entails. Is it all as fancy and glittery as it looks, or is it hard work and grit behind the scenes? In our cover story Bold & Beautiful (Page 28), we bring to you the best of merchandisers, stylists, personal shoppers, makeup artists, hair stylists and many more who make this world a sexier, smarter and sharper place. In a fast-paced world, learning new skills has never been more paramount than it is now. One such skill that you absolutely must nail in order to move your sluggish career in marketing is Digital marketing. It is because of this very reason why we chose to talk about it in our Focus Feature, Upping the Ante (Page 16). We shed some light on the emphasis of most companies on this imperative skill, and give you the lowdown on how you can incorporate it into your résumé to give your career the augmentation it needs. Every now and then, you may be told that time is the best teacher. But if you think about it, can you picture a world without teachers in their physical form? It's implausible to think that we could learn the things we know about the world without having someone to teach them to us. In the month of Teachers' Day, we toast the infallible teaching spirit and commemorate the legacy of some of the most iconic teachers in the history of mankind in our Entertainment Feature, A Lesson over History (Page 50). So do celebrate with your teachers this Teachers' Day.

world IIT Delhi plans new department on design

 IIT Delhi is planning to commence a full-fledged department on design with an aim to increase the technical and aesthetic skills of the candidates.  "Product designing has become an important aspect for engineers today and cannot be ignored," said Professor V Ramgopal Rao, Director at IIT Delhi.  The course planned at both levels. Bachelors, as well as Masters level programmes will be offered and the department expects up to 300 to 400 students, he said.  There will be a separate entrance test for these courses and it will be eligible also for the students who are from non-science background, though the plans are yet to be finalised.  As of now, only IIT Guwahati has a department on design. IIT Bombay has an Industrial Design and the focus is now on IIT Delhi as well.  A programme by the name of IITPal will soon be launched where students will get training online. The recording for the same is about to begin.  For more information, visit www.iitd.ac.in

 The Bar Council of India has accredited Australian Catholic University’s (ACU’s) Law degrees for a period of five years beginning in 2016. This recognition means Indian students hoping to study law in Australia can have their ACU Law qualifications recognised when they return home, and pursue a legal career.  The Dean of the Thomas More Law School at ACU, Professor Rocque Reynolds, said "This announcement is recognition of the quality of an ACU law education and reasserts ACU as a truly global university."  The curriculum is ethical, global and practical, and we produce lawyers who act in a sustainable and socially responsible manner. The curriculum is continually updated to reflect local and international trends and changes to the commercial environment, as well as advances in student learning. This ensures that the graduates are well-equipped to become leaders in the legal profession.  Students wishing to practice law as an advocate in India must complete five years of legal education. They may be required to undertake a bridging course if they graduate with an Australian law degree in a shorter period of time.  Indian students wishing to study Law at ACU are encouraged to contact Colma Fechner, Regional Manager, International Marketing and Student Recruitment: colma.fechner@acu.edu.au

DCI sanctions dentists to pursue medicine

 It is a dilemma for a medical aspirant to choose between MBBS or becoming a dentist. However, a medical aspirant can now be graduated in both. The Dental Council of India has recently altered this rule to allow its students to sign up for a 3 year bridge course after their Bachelor’s degree  This will not only have the medical aspirants to hold Bachelors of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree but they can also take up the second degree and graduate as the doctors to have their exceptional career in the field of medicine. After the bridge course is done, the candidates will have to compulsorily serve in the rural areas of the country for 3 years.  In the first year, dental aspirants and MBBS aspirants have common subjects like biochemistry, anatomy, physiology and pharmacology. In the bridge course, the students will be taught different subjects such as forensic medicine, microbiology and community medicine.  In the second year, candidates will have subjects like general medicine, ENT and so on and in the final year the students will get exposure to the subjects like general surgery, paediatrics, gynaecology and other allied subjects.  After the bridge course, graduates can practice as first contact physicians.  The Dental Council of India (DCI) is also proposing to award them with a Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree in essential medicine.

Bennett University and Georgia Tech team up for B.Tech. Program

 Bennett University and Georgia Tech have come together in collaboration for design and delivery of a high-end engineering curriculum.  The agreement between the two will help promote academic collaboration and support Bennett University in progressing technical excellence in engineering studies in comparison with other best institutes in the country.  As both have come together, Bennett will work with Georgia Tech faculty supported by research engineers to establish Research Centres in Cyber Security, Big Data, Cloud Computing, Robotics and Embedded Technologies.  Speaking on the occasion, Dr Yaj Medury, Vice Chancellor, Bennett University said, “Technical education in India has scaled multifold over the last decade with over 10 thousand engineering colleges producing one and half million engineering graduates each year. Unfortunately, the quality of education is continuously deteriorating with only 20%25% of these graduates being employable”.  Bennett University will begin operations from July 2016. In its first phase, 4-year B.Tech. and 2-year MBA programs of study will be offered.

3Dexter, The Next Step to Innovative Learning

 3Dexter launches a 3D Printing curriculum based on experiential learning for educational institutions. A group of young minds have committed to combine fun and learning on a platform called 3Dexter.  3D Printing is a strong establishment of bringing innovation to education and the teaching system which includes teachers and students on the two ends, can now be more effective. 3D Printing Labs can be more comprehensive and will create a more interactive arena for the students.  Education is a segment that has a wide scope for technological amalgamation. 3Dexter, with the same ideology lays the foundation of three dimensional learning in schools using physical models, substantiating its position in school curriculum by reasoning the importance of 3D Printing.  It not only stimulates the sense of problem-solving among children but also provides them with a maker space of their very own within the school premises.  3D Printing as a concept has recently become popular in the higher learning sectors such as; Medical and Engineering. At 3Dexter the founders aim at the technological gap at the more elementary sector i.e., the schools. They believe in the simple idea of learning through (DIY) and have composed a wide system for the same.  For more details: www.3dexter.com

Shades Of Life

Sanket Wankhade Photojournalist

Questions! Questions are all I have in my head. As I see people, their faces I see life. I see difference. Who are all these people? Where do they come from? Mars maybe! Do we know them? Do they know us? What do they do? Do they matter to us? Do we matter to them? Well I don't know. I don't know any of it. Do you?

As I walk through the streets, especially the crowded ones I always see people work throughout the day, some for passion, some for money and some because they have to. But there is difference in all of them. people from the middle class and upper class work for money and passion whereas people from the lower class don't usually work for their passion or to live up to a certain lifestyle, they work because they just have to!

"I don't particularly like watermelons. So, I sell them!"

And it rained! Monsoon is one such a season that's beautiful. I denied it though. What I used to believe is, the rain comes down and messes up places. Dirt wrapped around your footwear and drenched clothes sticking on you most part of the day. But my mother has her perspective here, she disagrees. For her, monsoon is the most wonderful thing God could have imparted to nature. She thinks that rain is like a mother, it gives life.

All you can hear from colleagues is that they find their jobs hectic, repetitive, leading them to reach a saturation point. My friends go on nagging about their work they have been doing throughout the weeks. On the other side there's Mr. Vithal Bansode a cobbler amongst our community working his way for 36 years until the last pair of shoes is done polishing.

MAUT KA KUA (WELL OF DEATH) Inside a man-made tub, daredevil motorcyclists defy gravity and perform stunts that will put any Bollywood or Hollywood heroes to shame. There are no helmets or safety nets to protect them in case of an accident. These guys practice a lot and using a bit of laws of physics they perform death defying acts.

Just when I thought I am getting older day by day I saw this old man in a village near Torna Fort near Pune. He owns a little daily needs store (tapri) outside of his home and shared his life story with me. When I think about him and look at his eyes I can see his whole life.

message. Keeping this in mind will ensure that once the recruiter reads yours résumé, it will immediately strike a chord and convince him.

Quantifying your digital marketing results:

Synonymous to starting an online marketing campaign wherein we first decide who we will be reaching out to, even while you write your résumé, this rule needs to be implied. Doing that makes the other decisions much easier. If you know who will be reading it, shaping it is not all that difficult. To go ahead with this, you need to ponder over the type of company you want to work for. The same might be an agency with a gigantic digital marketing team or just a small company who’s idea is to use the power of social media to grow. Once you have pictured the ideal company in your head, you can judiciously target your résumé. You’ll be able to figure out which skills or traits to highlight, words to be used and which parts of your background will be of interest to your reader.

Keep in mind that you are in a profession where everything can be measured, analyzed and estimated. Make use of this to tell your story effectively. However, avoid lots of rounded numbers, even if they are true. Use your proficiency at the very best and also your persuasion skills to the optimum. You need to be able to persuade your recruiter that you are convincing enough to sell off almost anything. It is your ability to put this through that will help you achieve your target. Please note that most employers now use applicant tracking systems to screen out candidates before the résumé is even seen by a person. This is done by using keyword scans. You upload your résumé, it is then scanned for relevant keywords (this is programmed in advance by the recruiter) and this determines your success. If you happen to pass, your résumé goes to a recruiter for review. If you not, no one ever sees it. That makes it incredibly important to ensure whether you have included all the right keywords. To do this, make a note of every digital marketing skill you have – every social media site you know how to use, every analytics or CRM system you know, every software program or SAAS system you use, don’t let anything go! Also create a section on your resume called ‘technical skills’ or ‘digital marketing skills’ and include them all. Other things to keep in mind n Write in active and NOT passive voice n Spell out uncommon acronyms and abbreviations n Leave out slang words and casual talk n Don't use old-fashioned terms which have no relevance n Sell, don’t tell n Make sure your words play well together n Eliminate clutter

Visualize and strategise:

The potential of digital marketing

You won’t think of creating a banner ad or a social media campaign without a clear strategy in mind and the same applies to your résumé. Recruiters won’t respond to your résumé if it doesn’t resonate with them, and the way to make this happen is to strategize your message just as you would with an online promotion. Think about the best structure for your résumé in order to highlight your value proposition apart from keywords your employers will be looking out for. Giving real-world examples of your value proposition will be the icing on the cake. Ask yourself what makes you stand out from others? Define your unique blend of skills and experiences that will make you an asset for the company. Think over your social media successes and ideas you have developed which will be very convincing to the recruiter.

Digital marketing is for sure flexing its muscles and with digital being the new medium of engagement and communication with customers, companies are make it a point to increase their efforts on digital channels. Prodigy

A RACER TO REMEMBER One of the youngest prodigy racers to jump into the big league of Formula F1 racing, Jehan Daruvala gets candid about everything on and off the road with Misbaah Mansuri

I

f there is one thing that pops up about this burgeoning racer, it’s that he is only 17-years-old, but with his never-say-die attitude is already carving a gem-strewn path for himself. While in the past, drivers could just turn up a few minutes before the race started, jump in their cars, and then head off home as soon as the chequered flag came out, that's no longer the case. More power to this young racer, who manages everything from warming up, catching up with fans and meeting sponsors to race day parades and post-race functions. A chat with the ace and you’ll know! How did you realize that racing was your true calling? As a child, I always enjoyed watching Formula 1 races. When I sat in a go kart at the age of nine, I enjoyed the speed and the fact that I was much faster than people who were much elder than me from the beginning. Once I began go karting at the national level, it became an obsession and something I thoroughly enjoyed. I won the Nationals in my 2nd year and the Malaysian championship the year after. At this point I knew that I was good at an Asian level but had always heard that the step up to European karting was very challenging. When I got an opportunity to represent India at the CIK FIA Academy trophy in Europe at the age of 12, my aim was to try and make it in the top 34 drivers and qualify for the final. There were 64 drivers representing over 40 countries. When I managed to qualify 9th out of the 64 drivers on my first appearance on European soil, I knew that I had the talent to make it to the very top. Describe your experience stepping on to a track that saw the likes of Nigel Mansell and Jenson Button among its previous conquerors? Driving on tracks that have so much motor racing history, is always a special feeling. I feel privileged to have the opportunity to race on the same tracks where such great names have raced before. You bagged 4 podiums and 5 ‘Best Rookie’ trophies at the Formula Renault 2.0 NEC amongst other

accolades so how do you ensure that you are on the top of your game when there is cut-throat competition and sky rocketing expectations? Like any other sport, even if you have the talent, there is no way to be on top of your game without hard work and dedication. During the season there is very limited amount of testing allowed and hence when you do get time on race weekends, you need to ensure that you make every lap count. You need to be continuously learning and progressing forward in the limited track time you have. I have always believed that it is important to race against the best drivers in the world and in the most competitive series that you can. Beside the driving, the fitness and nutrition are extremely important. I have my fitness and nutrition coaches based in the UK. Besides working with me when I am in England, they come with me to my races and monitor my food and fitness regime. Their support on and off the track is crucial in ensuring that I am at the sharp end. The mental side too is crucial if you need to be a successful racer. My mental coach based in England sends me MP3 files to hear before every race. I do visit him as often as I can between race weekends. There are a lot of techniques, including visualisation which have helped me a lot. As regards managing the sky rocketing expectations, the experience of facing these from the age of 9 has helped me a lot. I tend to focus on my racing and pay less attention to all the expectations around me. Engaged in a tight battle with M2 Competition teammate Lando Norris at the Toyota Racing Series in NZ in 2016, you showed great composure. How do you manage to keep up with that? Lando is a fantastic driver and a good friend. We have been team mates since we were karting with Ricky Flynn, in the TRS in New Zealand with M2 and now with Kaufmann in Formula Renault. We have always pushed each other hard and have learnt from each other along the way. It is very important to have a very good teammate at this stage in your career as it is important to continuously learn and improve as a driver in these formative years. The rich rewards of racing are countered by risks of accidents or death. Does it intimidate you? As a driver we always know that there is a risk. However if you are intimidated by it, then you should not be in the sport. I do remember in New Zealand when I was entering the first corner in Ruapuna, the spray from the cars in front reduces visibility and makes it difficult to see anything in front of you. When you go into the spray without backing off and make the corner without being able to see it, based on some markers off the track ,you are hoping that nobody has crashed in the spray as you would crash straight into them. However if you were afraid and lifted off, you are bound to cause an accident with the car behind. Having said that, the cars over the years have become safer. There are a number of drivers, including myself who have walked out unscathed from horrible accidents. Tell us about your future plans in the field? Towards the end of this year I will decide whether I

will be doing GP3, Euro F3 or Formula V8 3.5 in 2017. I would like to target to get to Formula 1 in 2020. How do you visualize the future of racing in India? I feel that the karting races in India offer a good stepping stone for anyone interested in starting a career in motorsport. While continuing to race in India, it would be important to get an exposure in Asia. If you are competitive at the Asian level, it is imperative to move to Europe early and hone your skills against the best drivers in the world. Earlier there were not many good single seater championships in India. However with time, both JK and MRF have championships which can be a good stepping stone for single seaters. The big issue in India is the lack of corporate sponsorship. In the UK they have the Racing Steps Foundation which scouts for young talent on a yearly basis and then pays for all their costs through their development phase. In India, there seems to be no funding even for drivers who have are doing well internationally which is a drawback. Being a racer is also about being an athlete and executing when you are on the brink of exhaustion. What is your way on polishing yourself athletically? The Formula Renault races are not very physically challenging. The cars have quite less downforce and the races are not longer than 25 minutes. However, as you move up the single seater ranks, the downforce increases substantially and the races get much longer which puts a huge demand on your physical fitness too. I work closely with Pioneered Athlete Performance who support me both on and off the track. Even when I am on a short break in India, I send them pictures of every meal I eat and send them short videos of my gym routines. They are constantly in touch with my fitness instructor in India to ensure that I do my optimum training. Being athletically polished is an essential aspect of the sport and a lot of conviction and motivation goes in it. You have to be determined and make sure you prepare yourself enough, not overlooking any aspect. A piece of advice for those wanting to pursue a career in racing? It is a fantastic career option provided you are willing to make huge sacrifices. If you are not one of the top ranked karters globally by the age of 16, the odds of making it big in motorsport are very slim. Hence you would need to shift to Europe when you are 12 or 13 to have a realistic chance of honing your skills against some of the best drivers. yi

Buddies In Business

With the perks of working with your pals comes a diverse range of challenges. We help you debunk the notion that you cannot strike a balance between friendship and business and decode what it takes to establish a successful business with your friends.

I

f pals and founders of Google, Sergey Brin and Larry Page could do it, Apple founder Steve Job and friend Steve Woznaik together could infuse a new dynamic in the world of smartphones and Bill Gates along with high-school buddy Paul Alanaik could nail it, what is it that deters us from taking the world by storm as we join hands with our buddies?

Striking a balance One of the biggest challenges that come in the way is being able to strike a balance between the personal and the professional. Do not let the lines between work and play get blurred and always keep in mind that striking a balance between the two is the secret ingredient to emerging victorious when working with your friends. Working towards a startup requires unfaltering perseverance and a never-say-die attitude along with a really well-knit team. Chalk down few rules and make up our mind to follow them rigorously. If you follow them, you’ll can reward each other by a fun night or a lip-smacking lunch. Soniya and Rizwan who have been friends for 6 years started their own successful PR venture, Amigos Communications. They met at K C College, where they did their PG in Advertising & PR

together. The duo worked together for a couple of years in the same company but always dreamt of starting up their own agency since they shared a common interest in fashion & lifestyle PR. In January 2015, they started off their venture Amigos Communications with a modest set of three to four clients. “More than a friend Rizwan has always been a mentor to me and has always guided and supported me to strike that perfect balance in my personal and professional life. Being friends since long we know our strengths and weakness which makes it easier for us to serve our clients better. We do have our share of arguments at times but I believe these are just the perks of working with your best friend, says Sonya Shaikh, co-founder, Amigos Communications.

Conforming to professional guidelines Adhering to professional guidelines is primary. Whether it is about working closely with your oldest friend, conforming to professional guidelines is something that cannot be refrained from. Discipline drives everything and sticking to it only helps us in reaching heights of success. For instance, keep a late mark for the third time of coming late in a month. The punishment for it can entail working an hour extra. Following them ensures a

systematic work culture even though it was working with a close friend. Even though you work from home, make sure that discipline is adhered too which will contribute to the perfect work environment and is an important factor to be kept in mind. Ankita Mantri and her friend Srishti Nadhani founded Store Untold and have managed to work around the fact that they work from two different cities - Mumbai and Kolkata. Despite not meeting each other for months, they decided to still give in everything to their venture. With better delegation and constant connect they reduced the time used to take in decision making. They have a small three member team and are essentially work-fromhome employees and hence sometimes the quantum of work would get a bit overwhelming. But the love they have for fashion is a great antidote to that. Learning from feedbacks of people about their work and ensuring composure they started emerging successful and in no time pulled off their campaigns which gained momentum. “Disagreements on trimming existing features, adding new services, where should we manoeuver the Store Untold boat kept happening but our lightheartedness and respect for each other won over all issues and we managed to strategize a creative model for our venture” shares Ankita. What made their venture succesful despite the distance was conforming to the discipline while working together and and giving in everything to it.

Challenging each other in moderation It is considered to be difficult to push a friend on days when he is having a tough time but a professional work environment demands challenging your colleague to do better. As we believe that the show must go on irrespective of what comes your way. However, you cannot overdo the same as your friend might misinterpret you for not understanding his state. Situations demand pushing each other to do better but making sure you don’t make it look inconsiderate. Challenge each other to pave ways to success but do it in moderation. Rizwan Shaikh shares his experience working with his friend.

“It ignited me to be an entrepreneur and indulge into a partnership and that too with my best friend. As the name of our organization also implies as 'friends'. Working with friends has its own merits and demerits. It's difficult at times because there's a thin line you can't be out and out professional as you share an emotional bond too. In ours it's going good as we understand each other and try to avoid friction. We try to give each other as much of space as required in a scenario,” he says.

Capitalize on the strengths The brighter side of working with a friend is knowing him in and out. You might be well-versed about his USP, his drawbacks and many other aspects. Knowing your colleague is like half battle won as it can help you determine many aspects of executing the business. You can spruce up the boring, late nights of work into peppy nocturnal odysseys and you might also be able to judge for yourself about what business decisions your friend is likely to take, what he could do the best or what could put him down. This is something that can definitely be capitalized on to further successful business and can also help you incur profitability in business. yi

The

Nordic

Way

Flying off to the UK or the States is too passé at a time when development is growing at a rapid rate all around the globe. Rohit Gupta talks about the up and coming Nordic countries that you need to check out It’s very natural to want to head down to an education counsellor’s office and enquire about the best colleges in the US or the UK. Most times, we even add Canada and Australia to our list. However, while we’ve been so enthralled by the quality of life and education in these countries, there are places we have ignored during their development period for quite a while. And these countries are the ones such as Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland, all of which belong to the northern Europe region – Nordic regions, if we might say. Home to some of the lushest landscapes in Europe, a world-class education system and everybody’s favourite old-time pop group, ABBA, there is a growing rise in the popularity of Nordic counties as the ultimate higher education destination. Take a look at why we think they’re just for you:

Top-notch education Did you know that in the past couple of years, Nordic countries have worked extra hard to provide good quality education to their residents? Finland ranks amongst the best places for both basic and higher studies, and is believed to be a great place to live in for its innovative teaching methods in schools, its abundance of available course works in English and its devotion to research and development. Speaking of English language course works, did you know that Denmark offers more than 500 degree programs and apart from 1,300 courses taught in English? This is done to prepare their own students just in case they want to head over to other countries to pursue higher education.

Quality of life Did you know that Finland is ranked as one of the best places to live? It boasts of a thriving quality of life, especially in its capital city of Helsinki. The countries are thriving on its vibrant cultural scene and the general warmth with which foreigners are received. They also have fairly lower rates of pollution than almost any other countries in the world thanks to their need to reduce, 22 youthincmag.com august-September 2016

reuse and recycle. In fact, did you know that Sweden imports – you read that right! – almost 800,000 tons of trash every year from the rest of Europe.

Lush scenery Remember when we said that Nordic countries like to recycle? Well, that’s exactly why you can expect to be cocooned into an exuberant blanket of greenery. Picture cities surrounded by pristine stretches of water and fresh air. Apart from that, Nordic countries have their own unique attractions such as their gorgeous winter’s polar nights and the summer’s midnight sun – a phenomenon during which the sun is up and shining even during midnight! And if that isn’t enough, we’d suggest you read up on the Northern Lights because its one of the most stunning events you will witness. Streaks of colourful lights light up the night sky – do we really need to say more? Head to Iceland if the Northern Lights is on your agenda.

Culture, culture and culture What’s the point of living in a country if you don’t really like its culture? Well, there’s a problem you might never face in Nordic countries. These countries have a rather eventful past, which means that there’s plenty to experience. Over the past couple of years, you will see plenty of foreign students, thanks to Universities in these countries offering a plethora of different scholarships and prominent support networks for students living there. These means that you will see people from a wide spectrum of cultures from across the world. And if the food culture is what you’re looking forward to, you can expect plenty of new things to try. Countries such as Norway boast of a colourful cuisine which includes an abundance of fish. And, if you’re worried about stuffing yourself in one of the little cafes that dot the sidewalks of most of these countries, don’t worry about losing weight. There’s plenty to explore on foot and Skiing and Snowboarding is a national past time for these countries, especially due to their long, snowy winters.

Workplace Hacks

Drive away

the mid-week blues Long working hours, heavy workloads and persistent bosses – these are just a few reasons why employees start feeling the mid-week blues. Pooja Pandey suggests tips on how you can pep yourself up when the week seems like a drag

26 youthincmag.com august-September 2016

I

f the title attracted you, welcome to the club, my friend! We’ve all reached a point where absolutely nothing is interesting enough to entice our attention and make us feel good about continuing. It’s a known fact that Monday is the most despised day of the week. Does that make the other days better? No, definitely not. There’s nothing special about the other days either. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays are considered as the worst days of the week. Days that are closer to the weekend are always the slowest, and often result in mid-week blues amongst employees. You have to go to work, you don’t have time for watching new movies and you cannot do anything about it. No matter how “done with life” you may be, you still have to get up early the next day because well, there’s still time for Friday. So, what’s mid-week exactly? A very simple explanation would be that part of week, which is not Monday, but still far away from the weekend. You’ve not quite recovered from the stressful Monday, and you’re already anticipating Friday. If you find yourself feeling stranded in the middle of the week, we have a few tips to drive away the mid-week blues:

Treat yourself Whoever said treats are just for holidays? If you feel even the slightest bit depressed about it not being the weekend already, grab your phone and order a pizza with your favourite topping. Pour yourself some wine and watch a TV show that you love. How will this help? Firstly, there’s not a problem in the world that pizza cannot solve. Mankind was blessed with it, and it is made for the sole purpose of curing people’s issues. Secondly, there’s wine. I don’t have to list out how wine will help. And thirdly, you’ll be reminded of how you are able to purchase all of this. That’s enough motivation to go to work tomorrow all fresh and pleasant, unless you want to live a life with no pizzas and wine (we know you don’t want to).

Meditation There are all kind of thoughts going on in your mind. You’ll find yourself asking a lot of questions which need definite answers. You’ll wonder why all this is important, and how easy it would be if you were on a backpacking adventure to the mountains. What you need to do here is relax. It’s not as bad as it looks. To

stay motivated through the week, all you need to do is relax. Think about all the times everything you did made sense. Make yourself believe how this is just a phase and it’ll all pass away once it’s Friday. Meditate a little to free your brain from all your depressing thoughts and hit your restart button.

Believe You know what being in the mid-week means? The weekend is close! It doesn’t have to necessarily be in a day, but it’s right around the corner. You’ll be taking a break in a few days, and you can enjoy the weekend in a few days. Only, you need to concentrate on your work in the week to be able to take full advantage of the weekend. Do you want to end up with incomplete deadlines and loads of work on the weekend as well? No, you don’t. You’ll have to believe in the concept of time, how every Monday ends in a Sunday, and how your day of having fun is not too far. Just believe, and you’ll snap out of it in an instant.

Music The effect of music on your soul is immense. It is the most efficient way of obstructing all the negativity from consuming you. Mid-week blues are sad vibes originating from your brain, which make everything around you boring. Nothing in your environment seems entertaining enough, and hence you feel low. That’s when you turn up the music. Take a 15-minute break from whatever it is that you’re doing and listen to your favourite song. For a while, ignore all that is going around you and indulge yourself in the soothing effect of music. You can always sing along, but keep in mind that you’re around people. You don’t want to end up in a funny Vine video.

Get Creative What always helps in such situations is projecting your feelings in the most creative way possible. For example, if you’re an artist, bring your feelings out on a canvas. If you’re a writer, write about it. You’re sad, you might as well get a benefit out of it. You could get a good blog, or a good painting, and it does wonders, as now you’ve let your feelings out the way you like best. Even if you’re not good at drawing, try doing that. Make some funny doodles, just move the pencil around. It’s always better to be doing something than thinking about negative things. You might want to hide your masterpieces in a place where no one finds them, ever. Mid-week blues are easy to tackle when you know the right things to do. Try one of our tips and you’ll definitely get over them. Hold yourself together, Friday is coming! yi

What is a Fashion Buyer's job? A fashion buyer/merchandiser forecasts future fashion trends, identifies classic styles and arranges to get the merchandise for the store that they’re working at to achieve store sales targets.

How do you decide which items to buy and what you shouldn't?

What fun if we could decide which outfits go into a store and which don’t? It might be a rare privilege, but if you have the gift of making the right choices you might want to consider a Fashion Buyer’s job. Sonali Maklai, Senior Merchandiser at AZA tells us about her journey

My journey in fashion started off as a hobby with a partner hosting exhibitions in South Mumbai. I used to travel to Pakistan (unusual choice, I know) to get pieces for the same. We used to design garments with a team of karigars and tailors. After that, I moved on to Ensemble as a merchandiser where I worked for two years. Post that, I did trunk shows in San Franciso, Los Angeles and Orange County for Jade and trunk shows in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco for designer Adarsh Gill the following year. I analysed the US market extensively, understood their requirements and their need for Indian fashion. Currently, I am working for AZA Fashions as a senior merchandiser for their online portal. It's been almost two years and I must say it’s been an enriching experience working here.

Does buying involve an intricate plan? Sticking to classic styles and colours is always safe. Medium and large sizes are generally purchased as they are the safest bet for our country. The current trend is to generally buy clothes on consignment for stores. We plan for the season ahead and get the orders in beforehand.

What kind of experience do you require in order to become a Fashion Buyer? Understanding your buyer is the key. Getting merchandise according to store targets is also imperative. Knowing how to sell through the designers discount percentage in the store is one of the most important aspects of planning. Getting stocks for online stores is very different from getting stocks for retail stores. Offline stores you target the city the store is in. Online stores you generally cater to international market, international styles, colours, events (like black tie events, galas etc).

What are the qualities of a successful buyer?

E

ver wondered who fills up your favourite stores with all those brilliant outfits? And who gets to decide what clothes their buyers might like and which they may not? Well, all this is up to the fashion buyer or merchandiser. And considering how many trends come up each year and each season, it’s definitely not going to be an easy job.

30 youthincmag.com august-September 2016

A buyer needs to know the Indian and international markets and their needs. Working with well-established multi-designer stores such as Ensemble and AZA has given me the experience of a lifetime. Knowing the designers well is essential. Emerging designers are just as important as established designers due to their very competitive pricing. A portal needs a mixed bag of established and new talent. I am on a constant lookout for fresh talent through social media and exhibitions to provide them with a platform to establish their name.

No, we aren’t talking about going on pocketburning shopping spree. Rather, we’re talking about some who will help you pick the best and leave the rest. Esha Amin, an established personal shopper shares her insight

until he/she has completely convinced the client with a certain idea and convinces them about why it’s such a good idea with valid reasoning behind the suggestion. So yes, effective communication is very important.

Do you think that Personal Shopping as a career is under a threat, considering the rise of online styling and shopping websites?

Y

ou could go shopping once a week, once a month or even every few days and you still wouldn’t get sick of it. After all, it’s only human tendency to want more than you already have. And, some of us actually have a stronger tendency than others. And if you’re among those with such strong tendencies, personal shopping is an apt career for you. However, it doesn’t just involve simply going out and blowing your pay check in a single day. As a personal shopper, you will have to tend to clients and pick up things that actually suit their needs, rather than your own. To tell us a little more on the same, we spoke to established personal shopper, Esha Amin.

What qualifications do you need to become a Personal Shopper? No specific course can teach you to be a personal shopper. The most a course can help you with is the understanding of body types, aesthetics and trends. But, a personal shopper is someone who is a born fashionista and a die-hard shopaholic.

How essential are effective communication skills for a Personal Shopper? Just like any other consultant, a personal shopper needs to be a patient listener and an extremely good advisor. However, a personal shopper can never be successful

As the internet has become more of a necessity rather than luxury, today you don’t really need to do a particular course to learn something. Everything is just one click away. So yes, for any smart customer, reading a few tips would help them to an extent, even though the content available online is very generic. But, what a personal shopper can suggest is something what a customer would find crucial. So that's not a big threat as our fashionconscious, super-busy clients will always come to us for their season's wardrobe and style makeover tips which are very exclusive and also customised to their personality and needs.

How can one acquire experience in Personal Shopping? Once you understand the trends and the different body types, and you are aware of what is available in which store and where are the hottest best deals available, then you’re good to go. Regular practice will make you more efficient and will help in gaining experience.

What are the qualities of a successful Personal Shopper? No amount of information available online can beat the experience and practical knowledge a personal shopper has. They should know the key points about the different body structures and seasons colors, trends, forecasts where these trends are available at various price points and the also an understanding of the lifestyle of their client and his/her comfort level. The wardrobe planned should fit the customer's requirement and not the other way round.

Everyone wants to be us! Famous words from the film Devil Wears Prada. Tirusha Dave, editor of Bravura Magazine, London tells you how to chart your career path as a fashion editor magazine's digital issue. You go through the final layout, find tweaks which need to be made, redo the entire layout for several stories because it's too many pages as a whole. I's a sleepless night but all worth it at the end. Photoshoots are also a hectic day. To get the best shot you have to shoot in the morning which means you have to be up at the crack of dawn and your model needs to start hair & makeup by 8am, so that you can start shooting by 9:30am. Then it's at least an hour of shooting, or more if you're using multiple locations. To get that ONE perfect shot, you could invest 2-3 hours!

Of course, there are perks of the job but pulling off the career requires immense dedication and unfaltering perseverance towards getting better. Besides being updated with every fashion launches and style trends, you need to be versatile and know your game plan. Read Tirusha Dave’s journey and you’ll know it for yourself.

Did you have a penchant for fashion and style while you were growing up? How stylish were you as a child? Growing up, you can say I had style. Whenever I look back at my childhood pictures, I can see that my mom always made it a point to have me dressed in the best of clothes. However, the interest didn't really develop until post-high school.

Can you give us a behind the scenes look at what it’s like to be a fashion journalist? Take us down one of your most hectic days? The reality of it all, it's not AS glamorous as it seems to be. When it comes to my writing, I like to have a very "free" style; that means, I like to write whatever I want, for as long as I want. Then I would go back and edit out what's repetitive or jargon.

The trends you feel that will never die? I feel that statement necklaces will never die. Statement necklaces date back to the Egyptians. We have all seen sketches of royalty and they would be wearing large collared necklaces.

What has been YOUR HIGHEST HIGH AND LOWEST LOW? My highest high was when I was nominated for an award hosted by Atlantic City Fashion Week. I was nominated 3 years in a row and won each year. I was the only nominee of South Asian Indian decent which made it even sweeter. My lowest low was when my magazine was on a hiatus for almost a year but thankfully I had people who yanked me back right to the swing of things!

How can aspiring fashion experts make the most out of internships? Of course, internships are the hardest thing because the intern is probably doing the most work for either free or the least amount of compensation. But we've ALL been there and done that. My advice would be to work AS hard as possible. Even though you're an intern, who said you can't do the cover story! yi

Startups are never easy but its great to follow your dreams, Amrapali Singh, the versatile fashion designer behind the clothing label ‘BirdWalk’ shares her experience with you

I

t stands true that fashion is a form of expression. Amrapali Singh’s stellar clothing label and the elegance it exudes is a manifestation of this. Her journey, eclectic tastes and the confidence she wears will reinforce your faith in giving your heart and soul to your job. We catch up with the fashion maestro who spills the beans about her career, clothing label and more….

How did you get into this career? Strangely, by chance! I always had an instinct for art and design - dance, painting and, of course, fashion. I had applied for various art colleges including Baroda institute of Art, where I got an interview, but I wanted to move to Delhi so I applied to NIFT and got through. So thanks to Delhi, fashion found me! Since fashion appealed to my artistic sensibility on multiple levels, I stayed with it.

Any uncertainties or knockbacks you went through while launching your brand Birdwalk? Uncertainty is always there. Anyone who says it’s not, is deluded. The key is to stay positive, passionate and true to your instincts. Knockbacks come in the form of the challenge to set up anything on your own – reliable staff, funding, space. What drives all of this and pushes me through is I love what I do.

The prime qualities and qualifications needed to succeed in this field? Good taste with lots of dedication and persistence. The industry is still not very organized, so you will need to find your own paths. You can’t let mistakes bog you down, so be proactive and don’t dwell on setbacks. Focus on your vision and surround yourself with positive people. I am a little bit introverted and I try to push myself to be more outgoing, which is not essential but very helpful. At the end of the day, your talent and attitude will get you where you want to be.

How do you constantly keep enriching yourself on design trends and patterns? All my collections reflect the mood I am in at the time in life, so they are based on my how I am experiencing my journey. Like any creative field where you are building a career, you must be fundamentally interested in what’s going on in it. So researching the Internet, journals and spending time on the streets are all very essential to being a fashion designer.

Favourite design project you have worked on? I worked on a collection called “Zorba the Buddha” which has become one of my favorites. It was soulsearching process for me, so I remember that time well because it also helped me push myself creatively.

How do you plan to take your brand Birdwalk and career further? Building awareness of the brand - shows, marketing, social media. Apart from keep up the hard work, BirdWalk is evolving everyday as I push myself to new creative areas. Sustainability is important and I want to keep the brand firmly on that footing. Our industry is moving in that direction and it needs to. My vision is that luxury and sustainability can be synonymous. We also have plans to work with local animal welfare groups and donate a portion of each sale to their cause. We feel the consumer is becoming more socially-conscious.

A message you would like to give out to those aspiring for a career in this field? Be prepared to make mistakes, stay true to your style of work and remember that no one gets it right from the get go. Your passion is what counts. yi

With the rise of YouTube beauty tutorials, its easier to do your own makeup today. Do you think this affects the demand for a makeup artist? No not at all. YouTube has made it easy for anyone with an internet connection to do their makeup but having said that there is a lot of misinformation going around, as not all makeup gurus have the professional background or understanding of different makeup. Yes, YouTube can show you a great cheat for winged liner or different looks but indepth information – whether it is understanding a face individually, understanding the colours that work with a certain skin tone, type of makeup that would work better on a particular skin type – these are things that are key to good makeup artistry and can only be gotten from

There are also a lot of makeup artistry institutions mushrooming in the city. How essential is a certification for a makeup artist? There are self-taught makeup artists out there, who are great at what they do and have amazing skills. Similarly, there are certified makeup artists out there who don’t. Use the power of social media to put yourself out there. Show the world your work, follow and communicate with other makeup artists and advertise locally. Sometimes, you may have to do unpaid jobs, but they will all help in the end. The more people see your work, the better it is for you. Network, keep your skills up-to-date and remember that it may take a while, but don’t get discouraged.

How can a makeup artist keep up with new makeup trends and techniques? A makeup artist is only as good as their last job, so it is vital that one keeps their work and skills updated. Keep an eye out for the newest trends on the runway, especially at the big fashion weeks; it’s a great way of knowing what is to come. In an age of advancing vanity, there has never been a higher demand for hair stylists than now. If you know how to work your way around hair, then hair styling is definitely a career you should consider shares mastero Ryan D'Rosario in the industry today, be it photography, hairdressing, film technicians or interior designers have worked super hard with basic stipends and have reached what they are today, which this generation lacks and even their parents and peers don't make them understand the importance of this experience. To sum it up, one needs loads of practical knowledge and experience to be a good hairstylist.

Do you think the internet and YouTube tutorials affect the demand for a hairstylist today?

L

uxury salons, weddings and fashion shows – these are just a few of the many occasions and places where the presence of a hairstylist is always a must. And the fact that there is always going to be some new hair trend on the fashion scene just proves that it’s the right time to pursue a career in hairstyling.

What are the skills required to become a hair stylist today? In my opinion, if one wants to take up hair styling as a profession they should have some basic creative skills such as drawing, matching colors or have a basic understanding of color combinations (for colorist, internationally), or if they are fashion inclined and have a good sense of style. It also helps if you’re a people's person. But like all other jobs, enthusiasm is the most important factor and is what drives one to be top of the class, common sense and the drive to learn more is what sets you apart from the others. Other than that, getting trained under experienced trainers will have maximum effect on the students building their skill set cause nowadays everything is cut short, so a lot of students have half knowledge or a weak foundation to begin with. To begin with students/freshers who just finish their initial training want a great pay package and don't take into consideration to work under an experienced hairstylist like we did in the earlier days. Be it whichever creative fields, all big names

No, not at all, in fact it brings hair to the forefront and gives people an idea of what all is possible with hair, which this kind of awareness wasn't available a few years earlier. Yes, a few will try things at home but overall I don't think it affects the industry. In fact, at Salon Muah, we had some repair jobs that had been tried at home. On the internet, there are some superb ideas but most hairstyles or haircuts depends on face shapes, hair textures, job profiles, etc which only a professional can work with. Different hair needs different treatments and products to which customised info is not available online unless there is immense research done.

How essential is a degree or a certification for a Hair Styling today? The modern salon business is a structured business which not only thrives on client experience but also business management, health and safety, cleanliness along with the basic hair dressing syllabus. That type of training would come out from a good institute that trains in all these parameters which is conducive to the salon environment. Hairdressing is about 70% practical knowledge and 30% theory. Having said this, since it's a skilled job and at the end of the day it's the outcome of the skill that is measured. At an academy there is attention to detail and some places also works on the stylist's strong areas and develop those further. So, to put things in perspective, it's imperative to get trained under experienced trainers & a good academy to get a job at an acclaimed salon. yi

How was your experience of winningIndia's Professional nail championship Komal- It was a dream come true to achieve what I had set out to do and the icing on the cake was winning it with my twin sister. Kajal- It can’t get any better than cherishing the victory with my sister by my side and the entire experience of living that moment was priceless.

What are the most challenging aspect of your job ? Komal- To understand the technicality in portraying the emotion of the client and what she would wants to show through the nail art. This changes from person to person, season to season, time to time, and understanding the core emotion to portray that through my work on the nail is the most challenging aspect of my job, albeit not an impossible one Kajal- To make the client feel comfortable and to gain their trust. The reason is when it comes to nails, clients are like babies. They would want it perfect and although I have complete faith and confidence, it gets a little difficult to make them feel the same sometimes, however with time it has become easier to do so and now it comes rather effortlessly.

Do you think the nail business in India is enjoying a big increase ? Komal- I agree, India is seeing a slow and gradual growth in the nail industry and it is here to stay. Kajal- Lot of scope for anyone associated with the nail industry as India continues to surprise everyone with its growing trend and increase in sales figures when it

comes to nails. I would agree it has been trending positively for quite sometime now.

Your advice to those who want to pursue a career in the field ? Komal- My advice would be to start early, start fresh, have an open mind to a lot of possibilities, its nails at the end of the day and know the secret that it is a girl's best friend and is also a really good industry to be a part of. Kajal- An adventure awaits all those who want to associate themselves with nails. It is an enchanting world of colors, glamour, art, celeb, dazzle, bling. Join the nail industry for a thrilling ride of a lifetime and sky is the limit when it comes to nails. We saw it early, and conquered it together, so we are definitely having an amazing time.

compared to abroad Do you thiNK WE GIVE LESS EMPHASIS TO NAILS? Komal - I agree, the reason I would say is because overall as a nail industry and market here in India, we haven't fully understood nor have tapped the potential. Kajal - We have started pretty late and hence emphasis given to it at the moment isn't as much as it is abroad. Having said that, there is a tremendous boom for the nail industry here as it is gradually picking up. yi

FashionInstitutes

Coverstory

Gone are the days when a natural knack for all things fashionable landed you a job in the fashion industry. While you can still manage a job with a few connections in the right place, we’d suggest you check out these universities in order to fine tune your skills

1. Maintain good relationships: Some internships might be all coffee runs and photocopying, especially at bigger companies, where the hands-on work and practical experience might be minimal but they still provide an opportunity to network which is incredibly valuable. It's really important to meet people and build a connect with them. Networking is absolutely one of the most important aspects of stepping up your game.

2. Focus and give EVERYTHING to your internships: Degrees are great but internships do make a difference! Put in all your efforts and bring out the best in you for who knows, you might end up being hired there. Also, don’t be disheartened if it doesn’t work out for you in the start. We have all been there, done that. All the dedication and patience will do good! Always stay connected and treat everyone you work with as a possible future reference. In this industry, it is also

38 youthincmag.com august-September 2016

important to look the part; If you’re going to work for a makeup company, wear makeup. Always show up for interviews as prepared and knowledgeable as you can be, ask smart questions that show you’ve done your homework and never ever show up late

3. Display willingness: Willingness means you’ll have the drive to succeed. Be sure to look the part and also be dressed appropriately, act professional, have your hair and makeup done. Finally, define where your home is going to be. Interview at a lot of places, pick up on the vibe of the spaces and the people, then decide where you want to spend the rest of your life. Think long term.

4. Be persistent: Looking for a job is tough. You really have to be persistent. Don’t be afraid to follow-up (respectfully and within reason, of course). Also, whether writing your resume or conducting an interview, try to be result-

focused vs. task-oriented. Don’t simply say that you led media outreach for a new product launch, say that you helped drive new product sales by creating awareness through millions of impressions. Finally, try to think really broadly about your skills, even if not directly related to the job at hand. You can draw examples of leadership, creativity and analytical thinking from all types of life experience. Companies are not only interested in what you’ve done, but how you think.

Ask people for informational interviews even if they aren’t hiring, attend industry events and conferences. But please (please!) keep your emails short – people are busy!

+ Job HUNTING

How To

Heer Kothari keys down an experience of starting out early in life and how has it helped get a job.

I

may sound like a tyrant when I say that it is now time to pull up your socks, smell the coffee and assume your responsibility as a citizen, or even towards your family. It is time you get on your feet and start working. Shocked aren’t you? And you ponder,“But I just got out of school after three years, and I am done already? I am only in my early twenties!” The three years of college breeze by, and bygone days seem like a dream. The bubble of reality has just burst upon you, and now you find yourself coping with the perplexities of the real world. The world of cut-throat competition that’s absolutely devoid of the bliss and charms of a sheltered life. The need… To begin with, why should we start working that early? We still don’t have responsibilities on our head! Or perhaps we do! But, it is always better to get a job that is fuelled by our passion and interest rather that just getting stuck in the odd corporate rut! Well, starting out early has it’s own set of advantages. To begin with, it gives you the opportunity to financially establish yourself, and wean yourselves off your parents support at least for the smaller things that money can buy. You can also stash back what you earn for the rainy day, or re-invest the amount for fruitful returns when you have actually established your career. Hence, on the financial front starting early simply means you have rooted yourself well, by the time you have a family in place. It is necessary to do what you love, rather than doing what you have got to do! Beginning your career early gives you the opportunity to test the waters and choose your field of interest, keeping the practicalities of the job in purview. For instance, all your childhood you may have dreamed to pursue an engineering course and work with some top-notch IT firm. But, as we all know life is indeed full of surprises, and probably while whipping a meal for your friends in the kitchen one day, you may change your mind and start out your very own restaurant. Also, getting your job early gives

40 youthincmag.com august-September 2016

you the opportunity to meet with stalwarts from your own field. Hence, you can understand the nuances of how and where will that career option take you. It will also give you detailed insights on how well your career accentuates together with a perception on the approximate time frame. Doing an internship or working after graduation can help you get into a better university if you plan on pursuing further studies. Yes indeed, working in a firm of repute can help you procure a seat in both well-known Indian and international universities. Corporations generally look out for younger recruits, as they are always eager to learn at just a stipend. This serves as a win-win situation for both the corporation, as well as the entrant. So just key in the form before the opportunity passes. How to go about job hunting Most campuses have an arrangement with wellknown companies that offer them jobs even before they graduate. A programme such as this particularly happens at the end of the course. Students have their placements on the basis of their academic performance. Sometimes companies absorb students on the basis of their innate persona and other activities they take part in while assuming that particular course. Hence, it is necessary to keep collecting certificates, and partake in various other college festivals and activities to strengthen your resume, before you apply for an on campus job placement. While most of us assume we are young and why do we need to work? Well, let me put it this way, it is necessary to find your passion when you’re young and you have the liberty of! Five years breezed by, and it is now time one assumes responsibility. Some people may still have the liberty of time to test waters, and choose a desired career stream, but for those who are lesser blessed should start pulling up their socks right away. Most of us are connected to the social media these days. The tool is a real boon and gives one a birds eye view of the kind of job opportunities that are our

there. One can even apply for a certain position through job-oriented groups on Facebook, or use job searching portals to apply for a job. Be a part of groups of your interest on portals like meetup.com, to get a position of your choice. Opt for going back the old school, yet most effective way of job hunting using the newspapers. Encircle the positions of your choice and apply. Something important Do bear in mind that while applying for a job, it is necessary for you to sign up for a couple of positions. It is advisable to keep up with Plan B just in case Plan A decides to fail itself. Apply with an open mind! Sometimes you may stumble upon a position you have never heard of. Don’t squirm away from the same. Try it! You may like the job, and do really well. You may also happen to chance upon a smaller firm, but don’t shy away from an opportunity such as this either, as smaller firms teach you a lot more, notch the speed onwards up the corporate ladder. Your performance on the job might just earn you a recommendation in a firm of your choice. Be prepared to unlearn what you learn. In the real life not everything follows a rule-book as we are taught in our college years. You may chance upon the most surprising situations where you may have to drop out on the rules and take to an all together new path. Do ensure you follow up after sending out your resume somewhere. While firms generally call back for an interview, there are some that only want to appoint select recruits. So don’t give up! Try taking your own independent route. It helps you meet more people opening doors for interaction that may help in the future. End Note As I sign off, I would just like to state that not everything can be found in books and certificates. Life and experience are our biggest teachers. Hence, keep an open mind to a more successful life ahead. yi

How To

EXPERTS SPEAK

We spoke to experts from the recruitment field on what students should be keeping mind while job-hunting after they graduate. Paramjit Anand, Executive Director of Acreaty Management Consultant Pvt. Ltd. How to start looking for a job after graduation? 1. The first thing that you need to decide after you graduate from your college is to decide your career path. Pick up a field that interests you and meets your skills and abilities. Being passionate about your choice should be the main criteria for choosing an industry. 2. Your social media profiles play a significant role in landing you jobs. Twitter and LinkedIn should be used for making connections and displaying your strengths online. These profiles also help to get you googled by recruiters. 3. A job search should be seen as a continuous process and your first job will not be your last. You will evolve and change roles with time, but you need to be happy about your chosen industry and type of work. 4. Getting an internship early on is an added advantage on your CV. Small things learnt in an internship can land you big jobs in the future. 5. Joining a professional development or industry specific group also helps you to stay up to date for cracking an interview and also would help you to get some mentorship to land your dream job.

Do's and Don'ts to keep in mind while looking for a job when you're a fresher 1. While applying for a job, never send a vague CV. Mark specific interests and demonstrate your ability to handle them by referring it to previous studies related experience. 2. Don’t just expect to land your dream job right away, try to get into a role that is relevant to your field of interest. 3. Recruitment websites might not be as interesting and charming as your professional Social Media profiles, they are powerful tools to make an efficient job search. 4. While going for an interview, many freshers appear very informal. From not being aptly dressed for an interview to using a very casual tone in it, these are some mistakes to watch out for. 5. You just do not have to drop in for the interview, you have to prepare before you sit on that hot seat. Reaching about the role and the industry is very important and being black on the general outlines of the company and its work can send wrong signals across to the recruiters.

Kris Lakshimikanth – Chairman & Managing Director, The Head Hunters India Do's and Don'ts to keep in mind while looking for a job when you're a fresher 1. Whether you’re from BSc, BCom or any other field, it is essential to polish up on your English speaking skills. 2. A lot of students have trouble in finding appropriate jobs for themselves due to the lack of communication skills. Understanding its importance is essential. 3. It is essential for a student to brush on something that we’d call soft skills. Soft skills are the skills that you use to present yourself, whether in real life or on your resume. Just like how basic activities such as cycling can be taught, these skills can also be taught. 4. Do not underestimate the power of a good academic record. Being a fresher, a recruiter has no means to judge you apart from your academic record, which reflects your capability. 5. It is a common practice today to mention your phone number and your email id while building your CV today. However, you need to also mention your residence address in order for the right recruiters to approach you. Companies usually refrain from reaching out to you because they won’t know what location you would be applying from. So for example, if they’re looking for candidates in Mumbai, they rather look at candidates they know stay in Mumbai. 6. When you’re looking out for jobs, do not hesitate in taking up jobs in other places, especially if what their offering is good. Once you gain the required experience, you can always come back to where you want to be situated in and look for jobs there. Now that we’ve told you about the do’s and don’ts, keep them in mind and make sure you adhere to them. 42 youthincmag.com august-September 2016

Linguistics is the scientific study of language. Linguists consider language as a cultural, social, and psychological phenomenon and seek to determine what is unique in languages, what is universal, how language is acquired, and how it changes. It is considered as one of the cognitive sciences, providing a link between the humanities and the social sciences, as well as education and hearing and speech sciences. Linguists may work in education, industry, computer industry, advertising, publishing, law enforcement, government agencies, a testing agency, or become a lexicographer (write, compile and edit dictionaries), or a consultant.

OENOLOGY & VITICULTURE I’d like to know about Oenology & Viticulture. What career prospects can I expect after a bachelor’s degree in this discipline? Which institutions in New Zealand offer this degree? Samaresh Datta Oenologists direct and coordinate wine production activities such as crushing, fermentation, aging, blending, and bottling. Viticulturists plan, supervise and coordinate the growing of selected grape varieties for the production of wine, dried fruit or table grapes. The two fields are often intertwined in academic departments, so Bachelor’s degree courses are in Oenology & Viticulture. Lincoln University, Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology, University of Auckland, and Eastern Institute of Technology are among the institutions offering the programme in New Zealand. What do you think about the different scams plaguing the world and how should we tackle them? Gaurav Bagrecha Vijay Mallya, a wealthy businessman with an extraordinary way of living. He is accused of a huge scandal totalling above 10,000 crores. Well, when such scams come in limelight they have already caused damage to many stakeholders and us in general. The basic nature of such scams is very simple, i.e. monetary gain through unnatural sources/ channels. So, greed and continuous urge to earn more makes one to delve in such crimes. As I mentioned above, the repercussions it causes to us is beyond imagination emotionally and practically. Larger the size of the scam more are the victims suffering due to it. Thus, it is a blockage towards development and betterment of society.

Zenaida Gonsalves According to me scams in general is defined as obtaining money by means of deception. Scams lead to victimization of individuals, causing psychological unrest among victims, economic decline due to losses suffered by publicly used services, police and fire departments among others. We must spread awareness to battle them off.

Stanley Mamootil Scams are a long story in India. The capitalist class is to blame. It is the only way to get rich fast in a country like ours given the economic climate. The rich are getting richer and the poor, poorer. Nobody's given equal opportunities to rise. Let's face it, nobody's willing to give anything for free. In such a deadlock situation, scams are prone to rise.

Leandra Monteiro Lately, India has been hit with the news of numerous scams taking place. A scam is an attempt to defraud a person or group by gaining their confidence. They take advantage of peoples lack of knowledge. People are tricked into believing them. Politically backed up scams are tougher to unearth. Mostly importantly people are afraid to report the wrong doings because at the end of the day the one who loses the most is the common man. The recent past of India has been plagued with numerous scams. To prevent such from happening people should b more aware of what is happening around them and the government too should take more strict action against those who commit them.

Himani Jain

Our world is a beautiful place. However, it isn't shocking anymore to come across brutal/ unpleasant acts of scams or scandals these days. We need to realise that a scam can be as small as deviations at petrol pumps or mails/phone calls promising millions of rupees. Promote digitalised and transparent working environment. If you come across an offer that sounds too good to be true, reconsider it. Always be cautious enough to not be fooled by frauds. A wise man rightly said, "With a gentleman always be a gentleman and a half, and with a fraud try to be a fraud and a half."

Forum Sheth India has been shamed by a spate of scams big and small. The baiters, as I would call them, set the bait and we the citizens get trapped. The core impetus that drive all the scams and scandals, lie in ‘monetary greed’. There have been scams as simple as fraudulent calls to as big as Panama Papers, which can stun the country’s economy and development. So, before the baiters set their game, let us plan our moves. DON’T trust blindly. AVOID opening up to calls asking for your personal/ bank details. READ, be in the know of happenings in and around the country. THINK before participating in free contests and activities. TALK to your trusted sources. Today, we are digitally empowered, so it is wiser to make correct use of it.

A Lesson over

History

Teachers’ Day is upon us, and celebrations are in order! But, while you’d want to focus on teachers that nurtured your potential in your prime years, Sara Shah suggests you also commemorate some of the most iconic teachers in history, that set the motion for a series of life-changing lessons for people the world over. The 5th of every September is an important day, every year. It’s the day we celebrate Teachers’ Day in the country, and pretty much every school and college in the city is brimming with a sea of students parading cards and gifts that they painstakingly made just for their favourite mentors. On this day, the daily doings of most educational institutions is replaced by enjoyable activities and celebratory events, whereupon senior students take on the responsibilities of their teachers for the day, while their gurus kick back and enjoy the show. Easily one of the best days in school, isn’t it? As young children,

our minds are impressionable, and teachers are figures that heavily influence the way our minds develop. As the ever so wise William Butler Yeats once said, "Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire." We wouldn’t be what we are now if it weren’t for them. Which is why it is essential to always keep them in our thoughts. However, while we all may have teachers that affected our lives in one way or another, there have been a few teachers, who we may not have come into direct contact with, but have left a significantly large mark in our memories. Take a look at some of the most iconic teachers that made ripples in the history of teaching.

Aristotle – 384 BC One of the greatest philosophers in the history of mankind, Aristotle is renowned for the many lessons he passed on to the many generations since his existence. Not only did he lay much of the groundwork for western philosophy, but was also underwent scholarly training under legendary philosopher Plato at the age of 17. In 338, he began tutoring Alexander the Great, and thereby took his first step towards teaching. Lessoning Alexander provided Aristotle with a host of different opportunities and benefits. He built a library and school in Lyceum, and published over a hundred books there. Aristotle also undertook teaching and writing in the library. The school is believed to have a massive collection of written materials comprised of animal and plant specimen research, which Alexander collected for Aristotle on his many quests. While he may not have been what we technically call a scientist, Aristotle dabbled in various spectrums of science such as biology, marine biology and meteorology among others. His teachings were extremely popular amongst medieval Muslim intellectuals and was often referred to as “The First Teacher”. Aristotelianism is also known to have a profound in Judeo-Islamic philosophical and theological thought during the Middle Ages, and continues to influence Christian theology even today.

Rabindranath Tagore – 1861 The very essence of India’s love affair with music, literature and Indian art is one that exudes colours of Tagore’s profound developments in these fields. His professional repertoire boasts of a career that spans over a myriad of notable literary works, which are preached in various educational institutions even today. In 1913, he became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. For decades now, a myriad of educational institutes and countries have been paying homage to Tagore, especially on his birthday. Among these is the Tagore Festival held in Urbana, Illinois. He was also quite renowned across Europe, North America and East Asia. He was amongst the founders of the Darlington Hall School in England, where he worked towards introducing progressive education and rural reconstruction into the local tribal community. His lecturing circuits in the United States during 1916-1971 were widely attended, albeit they were plagued by controversies.

Maria Montessori – 1870 This Italian educator's career is a remarkable one. She is best known for the philosophy of education called Montessori education, whose inception she is responsible for. It is characterised by its emphasis on independence, freedom within limits and the respect for a child’s natural psychological, physical and social development. Her educational method is still widely in use in several public and private schools today throughout the globe. The educator's early career involved working with children who experienced mental retardation, illnesses and disabilities. She was also an advocate for women’s rights and their education, alongside the education for mentally disabled children and founded her first school in 1907, with the enrolment of a total of 50-60 students of different primary ages. It is in this classroom where she noticed and studied the different behaviours exhibited by these children, which later laid the groundwork for her teaching method.

Dr S. Radhakrishnan - 1888 Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan isn’t just the second president of India, but he is also the very reason we celebrate this day. A notable twentieth century scholar, he has played a significant role in shaping the understanding of Hinduism in the west and in India. Throughout his teaching career, he was known to devout his lectures to Comparative Religion. Another notable event during his teaching career was when he received the opportunity to deliver the Hibbert Lecture on the ideals of life at the Harris Manchester College, Oxford in 1929, which was later published in to a book. For his services to education, he was knighted by George V in 1931. However, he refused to use the title post the Indian Independence struggle, and instead chose to be referred to as ‘Doctor’. Throughout his career, he took on educational responsibilities at various institutions and across India. And since he believed that teachers are the best minds in the country, he requested his students to celebrate his birthday as Teachers’ Day.

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam – 1931 A scientist and politician by profession, India’s 11th President earned a place amongst India’s most renowned teachers today. He is lauded for his military missile development efforts, and played a pivotal role in the organisation of India’s Pokhran-ii nuclear tests in 1998. Post his presidency, he immersed himself into education, writing and public service. He took up the post of a visiting professor at the Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) at Shillong, Ahmedabad and Indore, along with being an honorary fellow of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He also was the chancellor of the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology Thiruvananthapuram and a professor of Aerospace engineering at Anna University and proceeded to take up education at various institutions until the time of his death. Ironically, he collapsed while delivering a lecture at IIM – Shillong, which ultimately led to his death.

Salman Khan – 1976 No, we haven’t mistaken the Bollywood actor for a teacher. Rather, we’re talking about the American educator, Salman Amin “Sal” Khan. He is the founder of the Khan Academy, a free online education portal and organisation, which has churned out over 6,500 video lessons on a variety of academic subjects. The idea for this portal came to him while he was tutoring his cousin Nadia over the internet using Yahoo’s Doodle notepad. Soon after, his relatives and friends sought his tutoring, which urged him to start tutorials on YouTube. His rise to popularity on the video sharing portal led to his resignation from his post as a financial analyst in late 2009. He eventually went on to publish his book, The One World Schoolhouse: Education Reimagined, which gave an insight into Khan Academy and his education goals. In 2012, he added the Coach Feature to Khan Academy, which promoted the connection of teachers and students through videos and monitor tools.

Relationships

Oh, the

shame!

In a time when beauty standards are constantly evolving, body shaming has become a common phenomenon, especially amongst women. Anisha Maheshwari sheds light on this raging issue

C

rash dieting, fasting, self-induced vomiting, diet pills, laxatives – more than half the adolescent girls and boys use these unhealthy means of losing weight. Although, in a society where body shaming is so very common, it is not very suprising that people are forced to use such extreme measures.

54 youthincmag.com august-September 2016

"You’re a size 0? You’re way to skinny." "A size 12? You need to lose weight." "You’re black, you’re white, you’re asian." "You’re too tall, too short, too ugly." This needs to stop. We live in a world where we are constantly critisized on the basis of our appearance. The

world has started judging us for what we appear, not what we are. This is by far one of the most messed up logics by which our society swears by. Is it worse to be “fat” than to be vindictive, jealous or bad hearted? Is being “black” really an insult? The idea of a “perfect” body is being subtly engraved in our minds. We see advertisments of lingerie models with unrealistic figures. We see news channels criticising celebrity moms for baby weight. We see shows where people transform from a size 14 to a size 6. And what exactly is this implying? That we’re never going to be good enough. That we need to kill ourselves and resort to extreme means to meet the unrealistic standards of beauty. Is this what we need in our lives? Body shaming impacts its victims in a very harmful way. The words start to resonate in our minds and slowly we start to give up on ourselves. We feel as though we are not worthy enough. The worst part of it all is that we start to body shame ourselves. Infact, we have started doing this unintentionally. Most of us compare ourselves to others. When we see someone whose thin, we start wishing we were like them. We see someone with perfect hair and immediately start hoping we were blessed with such perfect hair. This behaviour is what we call self body shaming. Such type of an attitude towards appearances is extremely detrimental. It leads to anxiety, depression and major selfesteem issues. In a recent study, it was proved up to 94% of teenage girls are body shamed. If we have been victim to such comments why do we continue this heinous practice? It is high time we stop. Its finally time to say adios to this body shaming culture that has been pulling us down and lowering are morale. We need to stop looking at people and judging them by their looks. We need to stop criticising ourselves. Quite frankly, this is not an impossible task. All we need to do is start identifying people for their achievements rather than looks. We need to stop being superficial and look deeper. Fortunately a number of campaigns have stormed social media hoping for a positive change and a new outlook on body images. Since 2012 the #fatkini movement has been going viral. This features a number of women taking pictures in bathing suits. Where just a few years before this, it would have been near to impossible to fathom a fat women in a bathing suit, they have embraced there looks and are confidently rocking Instagram and Twitter ever since. Like the #fatkini another hashtag has become an outrage. #ImNoAngel by Lane Bryant has made an attempt to redefine what society considers to be sexy by having women of all sizes submit photos of themselves using a personal statement of confidence. Apart from these hashtags, brands such as Dove and Victoria’s Secret which previously emphasized “the perfect body” have taken steps towards changing for the better. Victoria’s Secret had come out with a new lingerie line

called “The Perfect Body”. Their advertisement featured women who were all thin, ultimately promoting the idea that only thin women were perfect. However, they soon understood the gross mistake they made, issued an apology and changed the title to “A body for every body”. This was a huge step in order to achieve body positivity. Although one of the most widely talked about campaign is undoubtedly the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty. It conveyed a very powerful message which calls for some serious introspection. They said, “96% of women do not choose the word beautiful to describe how they look. It’s time women think about this choice differently.” This made everyone realise not to be to hard on themselves. That each of us our unique in our own way and deserve tone appreciated. And appreciated not only by others but also ourselves. One of the best things about this campaign is that they have been working towards abolishing the preset standards of beauty of the society for the past ten years tirelessly. Not only does this consist of heart-warming post on social media or television, they have also been doing research about body images! This information is then used by then to create campaigns on self-esteem and inner beauty. From brands to celebrities, no one wants to get left behind in voicing their opinions on body shaming. Former disney star Demi Lovato has always been vocal about her eating disorders as she knows she is a role model to many young people. She says she wants her fans to learn how to empower and love themselves. She has also condemned societies obsession with slimness and “thigh-gaps”. Despite these numerous efforts to put a stop to body shaming, most of us are still anxious over our appearances. There is no point in shaming oneself. All this shame, guilt and judgement is just more breeding ground for more shame and judgement. So, instead of feeling anxious about yourself, try celebrating your own body and differences. Whenever you feel too fat or too skinny, by your standards or others, divert your focus from the weight. Dress to impress yourself, live your life a little more fully, treat your body with respect and let the idea of perfection go. The next time you look in a mirror notice the things you love about yourself. Suddenly the so called “flawed” areas of your body will seem insignificant. The image of an idea body is an unnecessary burden on ourselves. We waste our valuable time contemplating on the “if’s” and “buts”. We tax ourselves mentally and physically trying to achieve the ideal body. We suffer through depression if we our unable to do so. What is the point of this all? Absolutely nothing. We are unique in our own way and these individual differences help enhance our character and make us the person we our. So, instead of worrying about your curves or weight the next time, think about yourself as a person. Think about the difference you want to make in the world and the impact you want to leave. Its high time we leave behind these petty little worries about our physical self and improve who we are as a person. And always remember, all bodies deserve respect. yi

Lifestyle Fusion isn’t new but the fact that it’s reaching crazy and even outrageous heights in 2016 definitely is. Misbaah Mansuri delves deeper into how restaurateurs and gourmands are going gaga over the ‘fusion fashion.’

ancy a Vada-pao with umami laden chilli queso or our humble dosa in a new avatar as a salted caramel smeared pancake crisp, ingenuity in crafting a gourmet experience and fusion foods are for sure not uncommon. Chefs are conjuring cuisine fusions and trying to present food experiences in its entirety. Take a sneak peek at some of crazy fusion dishes restaurants are serving:

Chilled Seafood Bhel at the Bombay Canteen: A play on Mumbai’s famous, local street food with plenty of shrimp and calamari, topped with kairi date chutney and crispy sev will elevate you to gastronomic heaven. Street food lovers, takes notes. Because yes, exclusivity is the pull!

Chilly Duck Samosa at the Farzi Cafe: A flavourful samosa filled with duck and quickly tossed with chilly hoisin sauce on a high flame is a fun take on the humble samosa. Adventurous foodies, this one is for you!

Candy Floss Paan at the Masala Library: Who would have thought of a paan flavour to this childhood favourite? The presentation is the cherry on the cake. This complimentary candy floss paan could just win over almost anyone!

Roohafza Creme Brulee with Kiwi Falooda at theFarzi Cafe: This quirky creme brulee tastes exactly like the the Roohafza the milkshake from childhood summertime evenings and does invoke some sweet memories too!

Pesto Kebabs at the Masala Library: These ravishing kebabs with tandoori tomato and parmesan papads has just the right amount of spicy aftertaste. It is a variant of our very own Hara Bhara kebab and will spell love at the very first bite.

The Jalebi Cheesecake at the Gallops: The crunchiness of an Indian jalebi in fusion with the mildness of a cheesecake is a sweet tooth’s fantasy. The scrumptious dessert with its exquisite depth can absolutely win over even the most disgruntled taste buds.

56 youthincmag.com august-September 2016

Chicken Tandoori Dosa at the Ziya: While other restaurants are experimenting with Indian and foreign fusions, Ziya is marrying flavors closer to home, with this dish. The end result is excellent with a really well thought of fusion. Try it to know it!

Bombay Spice Pizza Pie (Pav bhaji pizza) at the Rolling Pin: Ever thought of a pizza crusted with spicy pav bhaji? The Bombay Spice Pizza, a crazy but fun combo is perfect for adventurous foodies.

Ice Cream Pakoda at the Noorani: Tried fried ice cream? A melt-in-the-mouth affair, this ice cream pakoda is something you definitely cannot afford to miss out on.

Fusion Margarita at the Yuuka: It is a tall, margarita glass that holds the avocado tartare, crowned with corn dashi and crispy carrot chips, on a bed of ice. Adding to the drama of the dish, the server quite literally breaks the ice for us.

Green Tea Frappuccino at Starbucks outlets: A blend of sweetened matcha green tea, milk, and ice, its intensity is softened to mildness by milk and sugar. The end result is a refreshing and cool drink with a flavour similar to green tea ice cream. Something you’d devour on a hot summer day!

The Kolkate Meethapaan ice cream at the Sahib Room and Kipling Bar: Infused with gulkand, this robustly flavoured ice cream is a good variation on the traditional Indian paan. This cold and creamy version of Kolkata’s meethapaan is a masterpiece!

Culture on my palate Ingenuity in crafting a gourmet experience could take away from the authencity of a palate. On the contrary, it might help transcend borders facilitating unique culinary excitement. While a plethora of restaurants have adopted the ‘fusion fashion’ trend, there are few others which believe that beauty lies in embracing culinary ethos. Fusion and experimentation could be a make or break and informed caution is imperative so as to not sacrifice on the culinary heritage of food in a quest for instant fame. However, it is essential to break monotony. “Molecular gastronomy has endless possibilities. We get to explore and experiment with a wide range of

ingredients and techniques. In the process we create something uniquely creative. To keep up with the increasing competition in the industry, creativity is what sets us apart. It's appealing and appetising at the same time,” says Aditya Gupta, the owner of Spiceklub. However, we need to understand the importance of taking it up responsibly. Westernising ethnic food can dilute it of its rich identity. Is fusion only a way to stay relevant? Before subjecting our cuisine to a mishmash for profits, we must ponder over the fact that it is not merely food but entire cultures with complex histories and traditions. Trust me, these aren’t just cuisines but there is a whole bubbling world beneath them! yi

Point of View

An Inconvenient

Truth

Nisha JamVwal chronicles some side-splitting but eye-opening recent observations through travels across India and foreign shores

I

'm looking at some photos from more than two decades ago. Mildly discoloured, but still able to evoke nostalgia, and the thrill of my first visit to Europe – infact, my first foreign trip. Paris, Venice, Rome, Milan, Nuremberg and Brussels – I'd listened to animated tales of European cities from my parents and grandfather. And there I was, "doing" it all -- the enchanting, storybook cities, beautiful countryside sparkling clean steeples glistening in the sunshine with an azure sky so clear in dust free Europe! I'd wondered why they'd ever want to visit India? Over time, destiny and inclination has given me hugely extensive travel

62 youthincmag.com august-September 2016

exposure over the globe – and indeed "I love my India" (as the song goes) and jump to defend any slur upon its good name. I stand up strongly against the mildest racial slight to a fellow Indian, be it in England, in a flight by airline staff or anywhere. That said, at home I'd like to say that we often call upon ourselves some deserved disparagement. In all these years, when I encounter the clean environs of Switzerland or our Asian paragon Singapore accompanied with courtesy and always a tissue when they *ahem* sniff, I do yearn for a model upgrade for my India. Indians have proved themselves as highly competent businessmen, superlative professionals, innovative

entrepreneurs, and toppers in academics. Then why do we let so much of this be disregarded by certain aspects recognised as characteristically "Indian" traits and not in admiring men ? I'm driving towards Lonavla on the Pune Expressway – a countryside that blooms with beautiful greenery, come monsoon and it’s littered for long expanses along a sloping hillside below some village or township with plastic and other waste right in sight of the drive! Ruining an otherwise lovely countryside! Whither svachha bharat?! And never mind the TV promotions with actor Aamir Khan admonishing against spitting in public or ugh! Relieving themselves along city walls in full sight followed by a relaxed crotch scratch?! Worse there was a picture doing the rounds on digital media that had a traditional woman in full display with a sari covering her head, defecating by a roadside with two cellphones on each ear. Progress is not only about smartphones and 5G in India! (For your information, that picture went viral!) I have myself witnessed along a road bordering the posh Pali Hill (Mumbai's Beverly hills) with women from an adjoining slum holding umbrellas in the gentle rain companionably exchanging morning gossip as they squat with bare bottoms on a roadside, exposed to passing traffic. Probably a unique tourist attraction. Unparalleled in any other metro of the world! We shift the scene, I’m returning from Germany last week. On the flight was an Indian gentleman. Since he'd ‘squandered’ wealth on a business class seat, he felt it his bounden duty to extract full value for money spent – the number of times he called for the flight attendants! I don't know if it was his first flight, but he seemed of the opinion that the term 'flight attendant' was quite interchangeable with 'servant' as we know it in India! I cringed with embarrassment. This brings to mind my high profile German host – after some cross-country driving, terminated the transaction with a courteous bow and a handshake with the lady-chauffer of the hired car attired in a smart dress suit and accessories. As respectful as one professional to another. On the other extreme are our other travellers who are so intimidated by the "gora suited-booted" onboard staff and timidly remain hungry as they twiddle with an alien non-vegetarian meal presentation, too timid to ask for a vegetarian meal. As is human nature – here the attendants do tend to intimidate them further. I’m not sure I like the way they go "tch" so obviously and sneer at them fully venting pent-up work peeves on the crouched subject, mentally expostulating the ire of the former over demanding passenger upon this nervous specimen of India. It’s a global world and no doubt other cultures have their quirky candidates, after all human nature is all about individual selves, but underlying cultures are certain type-casting generalities. What our endeavour needs, I feel, is to be about an upgrade of our behavioural and lifestyle patterns before we upgrade to the Bottega Veneta wallets and Croco Birkin’s. Towards presenting a more aesthetically endowed, more empathetic, and more globally acknowledged presentation of the general Indian. Even our economic growth is amongst the highest i. I think many would agree, that we need a makeover from the grassroots up till it transforms our aesthetics and we

Singapore did it in one generation! I remember eating corn on the cob there, and carrying the wasted cob in my handbag to the hotel as I couldn’t sight a dustbin at the spot where we were! Contrast that with the carefree crassness as this ‘socialite’ in a swanky car and even swankier togs flings an empty packet of crisps out of car windows onto Marine Drive and I recognise her with her manicured hands while she’s quite sure she’s not being caught in the act? Or trashy bits out of residence balconies, on the rationale "Oh it’s already so dirty out there!" Tch tch tch! We are a warm country and our foods are redolent of the aromas of onions and garlic! Which of course, brings me to Bombay’s age old social maven who dresses up to the nines with those of sweat fumes wafting around her expensively got up person. Deo! Or this other kitty-party aunty where I am caught in the affectionate encirclement of this lady friend, as she renders fond "mwah-mwahs"! Imagine the affront to an airline passenger beside her who cannot jump out of the plane? Mouthwash! You wonder why the dentist is looking out of the window while he's torturing her teeth. The torture, my friend is mutual! Mouthwash and deo! Never mind the chemicals – they're more acceptable than the "organic" vapours you exhale. yi Read

Bizarre -OPhobia You may have heard of the fear of heights or the fear of the dark. But have you heard of strange phobias such as the fear of sports or of the fear of social media? Noel Fernandes tells you about ten of the craziest phobias Visiobibliophobia It’s the fear of social media. This phobia started off with the social networking site Facebook, but now involves all forms of social media such as Twitter and Instagram. People who suffer from this phobia check their Facebook wall a million times to see what their friends have updated or if they have missed out on anything. And when that isn’t possible it causes them stress. FOMO, which means "fear of missing out" is a common fear where you fear being the social outcast. A less common name for the disease is prosopobibliophobia which is rarely used

2 E

Nomophobia Do you have a mild heart attack every time your phone network goes low and you can’t reply to that text or scroll through your Instagram feed? Do you get anxious every time your phone has low battery life? Are you the kind of person who decides to go on an exotic vacation, only to change their mind because there isn’t good network in that area? Then you may have Nomophobia. It is basically the fear of being having no mobile phone coverage, having low battery life and not being able to use your phone for a long period of time.

Pognophobia It is the irrational fear of beards. People who have this kind of phobia cannot trust men with beards. It may be because of past traumatic events or parental influence. Bearded men are often perceived as men who are homeless or unhygienic and do not have the means to get a clean shave, which is probably a reason some might be really scared of them. After the 9/11 attacks, the fear of bearded men grew with a stereotypical attitude that they might be a terrorist. A clean-shave guy always gains more trust with people who have this kind of fear.

3

Metrophobia If you dislike Shakespeare's Sonnets or Oscar Wilde’s poetry makes you anxious, than you may have the fear of poetry. ‘Metrophobia’ is the fear of poetry and is generally developed at an early age. This type of fear is common especially for children. They feel that poetry is something which is some way beyond their reality and that they only belong to the elite and people that are highly educated. People that fear poems may have anxiety attacks after reading a status that has a poem in it or will not want to read it aloud. Some may have anxiety while reading a greeting card. It might also depend on the message in the poems.

5

Melophobia It’s the fear of music. This fear again is based on the emotions and message that the lyrics portrays that generates fear and anxiety in the minds of an individual. They may only listen to few songs or completely block out music from their lives. This can be hard to deal with. They could overcome their fear with positive music because music is a land full of hope and peace. The important thing is to listen to things that make you feel happy instead of getting worked up by the lyrics of the songs.

6

Anuptaphobia It is the fear of being single or staying alone. The thought of you staying all alone in an apartment makes you want to die. You get frustrated of being alone and can’t stay by yourself. You fill this empty void by spending time with partners you barely like or so called friends that you use to gossip about. When you are surrounded by people it makes your world complete you feel satisfied. People who are in a relationship may look at these people and say they are lucky but they don’t think so. This fear generally occurs because of past traumatic events and social phobias.

7 Scriptophobia Have you ever approached a celebrity for an autograph and they might have declined. Maybe they weren’t being rude but they might have Scriptophobia. It is the fear of writing in public. They basically worry about their safety issues. They are very conscious while writing in public. The symptoms include nausea, trembling and raised heartbeat.

8 Athlimataphobia Athlimataphobia is the fear of sports. People who have these types of fears are because of some traumatic events in the past or injuries that have taken place during playing sports which have generated the fear of sports altogether.

9

Triskaidekaphobia The name itself may cause a phobia! This phobia is the fear of Friday the 13th or number 13th itself. Friday the 13th created fear in our minds ever since we have watched the movie ‘Friday the 13th’ and ‘I know what you did last summer’. People who have this fear do not go out of the house because they feel that they will have some kind of bad luck and their day will go also go bad.

10 Cibophobia

In today’s day and age, where everyone wants a lean and slim body and are health conscious, many may avoid certain foods or may sometimes even avoid food all together. People who suffer from these kinds of phobias avoid dairy products. They may fear foods that have crossed their expiration date. Food that is cooked out of their control in hotels will develop stress and anxiety in the minds of these people. They may feel bad to decline food at a function or when they are at a family gathering because it is rude not to accept food. The symptoms include weakness, dizziness and feeling irritable. To avoid the doubts they have about how the food was cooked they may not eat all together. 2016 august-September youthincmag.com 65

Health

Road to

Fitness

Forget running miles on the treadmill and hours on the elliptical. Sara Shah talks about five fitness training methods that are a lot more interesting to help you shed weight

R

emember when people simply headed out to the gym to pump iron or the local running tracks to feel the burn of a nice, long run? Of course, most of us still do that, but over the years there has been a rise in new fitness trends, simply because people are easily bored with the usual, more traditional methods of working out. And, if you’re one of them, we suggest five of the most popular, upbeat workout trends, that will keep you enraptured and on your toes.

CrossFit This fitness trend dates all the way back to the year 2000. The concept was founded by Greg Glassman and is one of the most popular workouts amongst those who want to build up their stamina. CrossFit workouts consist of a combination of Olympic weightlifting, gymnastics and high-intensity interval training, which makes for a highly competitive workout. These workouts are fast paced and are usually a mix of aerobic exercises.

66 youthincmag.com august-September 2016

Equipments for CrossFit usually involve the use of dumbbells, barbells, pull-up bars and medicine balls among others. However, you need to maintain a certain level of caution while doing CrossFit. The techniques and exercises could cause some serious injury if not done right.

Functional Training Functional training involves functional movements as workouts which help in improving your overall strength and balance. It gives your whole body a workout and builds muscles that you use on a daily basis. Its branches off from rehabilitation methods by therapists and chiropractors, who used this approach to train patients with movement disorders. It provides you with strength, stability, mobility, endurance and flexibility. The workouts are tailor-made for each individual and depend on the needs of their body. The biggest difference between CrossFit and functional training is that in functional training you will not be using equipments or weights. Many of the workouts in functional training require you to use only your body weight. If you need a challenge you can incorporate weights. These workouts are limited and depend on what your physical abilities are. This type of training also reduces most chance for an injury.

Kickboxing Developed from Karate, Western boxing and Muay Thai, Kickboxing is a group of stand-up combat sports based on kicking and punching. It is practiced for self defence, general fitness and as a contact sport. Its techniques involve punching, kicking, knee and elbow strikes and defence. Although kickboxing can be a lot to handle, it

serves as a great form of cardio. Originating in Japan in the 1960’s, it is used by athletes, models and laypeople alike as a means of intense activity which burns oodles of fat and helps in breaking out a sweat. However, keep in mind that this form of workout does not come sans injury and will involve making some diet and lifestyle alterations.

MMA (Mixed Marshal Arts) This one is no child’s play. It is a full contact combat sport which mixes a myriad of martial art forms such as Thai kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Karate and Jeet Kune Do among others. Considering that it applies principles from so many different martial art forms, MMA guarantees a build in discipline of the mind and body. Those who practice it are usually expected to eat right, sleep well and train diligently in order to succeed. If you’ve ever noticed someone who practices mixed martial arts, you’d know that they have some of the best physical forms out there. It’s because just doing 3-5 minutes of boxing and grappling provides them with almost an hour of cardio. HIIT( High Intensity Interval Training): High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is a workout that involves high-intensity workouts interspersed with short intervals of low intensity workouts. It is considered to be more effective than cardio activities such as running because the intensity is higher. A single session usually lasts for close to 3-40 minutes and comprise of a warm up session, high intensity exercise repetitions, medium intensity exercises and finally a cool down period. So, if you incorporate running into your workout, you could be doing 30-40 seconds of hard sprinting and alternate it with 15-20 seconds of jogging or walking. yi

BIZARRE

BEAUTY TRENDS

Love them or hate them but you can’t ignore them! Adopt the three most bizarre beauty trends having a moment right now, without making them look over- the-top

W

e are at a point where social media is splattered with seriously experimental looks won’t surprise you. Infact everyday, plain-Jane styles will leave you hard-pressed. Today, being outlandish and walking the wild side is to inspire. Beautygramers are making it a point to embrace the wild side and never shield away from experimentation. Size up these crazy beauty trends that are the talk of the town.

Ear make-up

What is it? From social media to the runaways, the trend of ear make-up has surfaced just about everywhere! When makeup artist Violette Serrat created metallic ear makeup looks for the CR Fashion Book, bringing what some might consider an intimidating runway trend onto the streets. The aesthetic could even be used as the perfect backdrop to showcase your earrings. When to try it? Making this bold statement when you tuck one side of your hair behind your ear on night outs seems like a good idea! How to pull it off? You can go for a subtle ear make-up option, whereby it mimics wrap earrings and doesn't quite feel like you just took a paintbrush to the side of your head and went wild with it.

Glitter undercut hair tattoo What is it? Instagram is flooded with these sparkling statements that combine the two eternal favourites: glitter and tattoo. Undercut tattoos look ravishing with a little bling. Colorist Guy Tang, who has shown us the perils of heat styling on rainbow colors, has crafted the next incredible take on undercut tattoos: glitter undercuts! He collaborated with stylist Rebecca Taylor to combine the edgy tattoo design with the fun and festive glitter roots trend. When to try it? We say, try it for a music festival and you are sure to turn heads! How to pull it off? Go to a salon and get an undercut in any pattern of your choice. Then glam it up, but add glitter to it in colours that complement the dyed sections of your undercut.

Confetti eyeliner What is it? It is your regular eyeliner look, but instead of a solid line of colour, different colours or specks of glitter are dotted on for confettilike effect. Just like a party essential is made up of a thousand small pieces of paper or glitter, this beauty trend is a pretty little masterpiece of several little dabs that are meant to resemble scattered confetti. When to try it? Opt for this during a celebratory day to look vibrant or when you want to take your cat eyeliner to the next level. How to pull it off? Add a dot to the outer corner of your eye where you want the flick to end — to act as a guide. Fill in your flick by dotting with the tip of your eyeliner. Then, alternate between a white and grey liquid liner, or something more colourful. 2016 august-September youthincmag.com 69

IMHO

Best of TV / Music / Movies / Books Dance reality show format has been dominating the television industry for quite a while now. Among these dance reality shows are some of the most entertaining programs. Yash Jani tells you about some of the best dance reality shows that are ruling on air now.

Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa

Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, a dance reality show is the Indian version of British television’s ‘Strictly Come Dancing’. On the show, the contestants are celebrities who perform various types of dance forms with their professional dance partners. Since 2012 this show is aired on Colors TV. The 9th season aired last month and the show is be judged by director and producer Karan Johar, actor Jacqueline Fernandez and and Choreographer Ganesh Hegde.

Dancing with the Stars

Dance Plus

With a relatively new concept, Dance Plus is an Indian TV dance reality show which is just a year old. Dance Plus is aired on Star Plus. Before the onset of season 2, several auditions took place in various cities of India and the best contestants were selected for the show. This reality show has a super judge, Remo D’Souza and 3 mentors who have their own team of contestants. Having all the contestants in 3 different teams, ultimately there will be only one winner after going through all the eliminations. Doesn’t this sound interesting ?

When dance reality shows of two different nations are combined into one show, it has to be one of the most loved dance reality shows of all time. Dancing with the Stars is one such American version of the British television series Strictly Come Dancing. This dance reality show’s format originally has a contestant celebrity who is paired with a professional dancer. The dance reality show is reportedly coming back in the fall.

The world's greatest icons of the 70's disco are without a doubt Donna Summer and Bee Gees. They set the pathway to memorable disco tracks that we like to grove to even today. Noel D'souza lists down the hottest disco songs you should be grooving to

Bee Gees - Staying Alive

The song Stayin Alive by Bee Gees is from the popular film Saturday Night Live. This song was released in the year 1977. It was written by the trio Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb and was produced by Bee Gees, Albhy Galuten and Karl Richardson. Their contribution towards the films marked them as legendary disco singers. The song like the movie deals with making your way in the world after being knocked down. The song after it was released hit the number one spot on the Billboard's Top 100 in the year 1978.

Daft Punk - Get lucky

The song Get Lucky is by the French house music duo Daft Punk featuring American rapper Pharrell Williams. It is the lead single of Daft Punks fourth album Random Access Memories which was released in the year 2013. It is the most contemporary disco song of our time. Although there have been many critics who didn't like it being called a disco song, it has made the Top 10 music charts of 32 countries and has won more than 9.3 million copies. The disco era sound is transmitted through Get Lucky via the guitar riffs and groovy bass line.

Justin Timberlake- Take back the night

Take back the night a song recorded by the popular American singer-songwriter Justin Timberlake was released in the year 2013 and was a part of Justin his fourth studio album The 20/20 experience 2 of 2. The song complicated a Michael Jackson influence and disco groove. It was a throwback to souls post disco evolution with an impeccable class. I guess his album focused more on the past than the future.

Bruno Mars - Treasure The treasured '70s was depicted in the song track Treasure by Bruno Mars. The song was released in the year 2013. It was written by Mars himself with help from Philip Lawrence, Ari Levine and Phredley Brown. It was described as disco, funk, soul and post disco with few R&B elements. It received media attention for its funk vibe which many artist have tried to bring back including Mars. Treasure has received positive feedback for its one of a kind tone. It's authentic disco sound brings back memories of legendary music artist like Shalamar or Michael Jackson.

Abba- Dancing Queen

Lastly, the song Dancing Queen by the Swedish group ABBA was a lead single from their fourth studio album Arrival. “Dancing Queen” is a song that is musically a Euro pop version of American disco music. At that time in America disco music was dominating the US charts.” It was written by the members of the ABBA group Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Anderson. The group knew this song would be a hit and that is the reason why they held it until the album was released before issuing it as a single. 2016 January youthincmag.com 71

Best of TV / Music / Movies / Books The bond between a teacher and a student is an unbreakable and fulfilling one. Every successful person has a teacher who brings out the best in him/her. They are the ones who guide us and add direction to our life. On the occasion of Teachers' Day, we look back at films that have paid tribute to this eternal bond

Black (2005)

Black, released in 2005 is affably the best Bollywood films of all time. Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, it starred Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee in lead roles, delivering stellar performances. The film is a sensitive tale of a quirky teacher, Debraj Sahai, who helps a deaf, blind and mute Michelle to graduate and find a life for herself. This film shows how a teacher's confidence in his student can do wonders. With an IMDb rating of 8.3, this film explores into an olio of emotions that a teacher-student can share.

Taare Zameen Par (2008)

Iqbal (2005)

Another acclaimed film, Iqbal revolves around the story of Iqbal, a deaf and mute boy who dreams of playing cricket for India. His father discourages him and dismisses him as a daydreamer whose dreams are just a waste of time. He wants Iqbal to be a farmer like him. However, Iqbal seeks help from a local drunkard, Mohit, who was once a great cricketer and begs him to coach him. This story truly shows how a student loves and respects his teacher and helps to fulfill his dream of making it to the Indian team.

A film about a special child, this film touched all our hearts, and showcased how the love and affection of a teacher can cure anything. This was Aamir Khan’s directorial debut, and saw him play Ram, a teacher who made learning easy for the students with his innovative teaching ideas. The film revolves around Ishaan, an 8-year-old dyslexic child, who has a talent in art but a poor academic record. With a little coaxing, the film follows how Ram helps Ishaan on his road to self-discovery. 72 youthincmag.com January 2016

Chak De India (2007)

The film revolves around hockey player Kabir Khan, who is expelled from the sport for treachery and is forced to leave his ancestral home by his neighbors. Seven years later, to redeem himself, he becomes the coach of the Indian national women’s hockey team with an aim to win the world cup for the country. He trains a team of players who are ridiculed and labelled as incapable of playing in the World Hockey Championship. The film tells us that no matter how harsh they may be, a teacher will always want the best for his/her students.

Hawaa Hawaai (2014)

A simple and lucid film, Hawaa Hawaai personifies how a young boy who has no knowledge about the world wants to be a champion in skating. He finds a mentor in Aniket Bhargava played by (Saqib Saleem)who coaches him in achieving his goals. The mentor, who understood the boy’s passion decides to teach him skating. This film very well showcases how a students goal can become a teachers goal too. This film did not set the box office on fire, but it was much acclaimed by the critics.

With the fast pace in which the competition rate is growing today, looking for jobs, especially after completing your studies has become a rat-race of sorts. If you’re at a loss for how to start out, give T.Murlidharan’s An Expert’s Guide to Top 101 Entry-Level Jobs For MBAs and Graduates a read

T

he title is quite self-explanatory. T.Murlidharan’s An Expert’s Guide to Top 101 Entry-Level Jobs for MBAs and Graduates is a comprehensive guide for graduate and postgraduate students on how to gain top-notch and top-quality entry level jobs. The book aims to benefit students from a myriad of educational fields and degree holders such as BE, BTech, BA, BCom, BSc, BA, MBBS and various media degrees. It also provides an insight into the various organization structures and its departments. The main crux of the book comes down to the various jobs suggested by the author. He provides a detailed description of the same, along with its likely salary, stress levels, skills required, career prospects and challenges among other things. To give us a better understanding, we caught up with the author, who spoke to us about the various challenges he faced while writing the book.  101 entry-level jobs is a large number. How long did it take you to compile this book? It took approximately two and a half years to compile and write this book.  How will your book help applicants in recognizing the right job for them? The book clearly outlines what a job description is, how to make career

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child- jk rowling

progression, what skills are required to succeed in jobs and the likewise. There is information on various industries and job roles, for graduates. There is also information on the advantages to being associated with some industries and job roles. Students should first read and understand all this information. Then, based on their interest, they can short-list 3-4 industries and 5-6 job roles.  What were the challenges you faced while writing this book? The biggest challenge was that there was no data available. Most of the published data is about the past. For instance, you find information on how many jobs are created but not how many jobs are being created. Even if you find such data, you cannot find information specific to graduate jobs, that too the entry level jobs. To get derive futuristic data, we had to make some assumptions and calculations on the available data.  Did any of your personal struggles contribute to the writing of your book? First, was to derive the target audience. There are three target groups, students, parents and counselors. The book should appeal to all the three. The primary audience was students, but I also made sure that the information is useful to the other two too. Second challenge was to keep the language simple. To achieve this, the book has gone through 7-8 rewrites. The third challenge was to abridge the book.  What are the areas of job search that your book touches upon? The book has a write-up on industry and job roles. It has inspirational stories that would inspire the students and has inputs from practitioners because only they can give practical insights. The book also provides additional information like which industries prefer graduates, path of growth in different industries, and also the advantages of being associated with them.

JUNO’S PIZZA

Kaitlyn’s Beer Garden

Cuisine: Fast food, Pizza Bites and Booze: Juno’s, which has eight outlets across the city, boasts of a menu which leaves you spoilt for choice. What’s more to it now is that, there is an array of new pizzas specially curated by Indian MasterChef Karishma Sakhrani which will make you go weak in your knees! Monday blues didn’t seem much of a thing when we knew some scrumptious pizzas from Juno’s were on their way to our office to fix it all! We started with the Jalapeno Popper Pizza, which was a delightful combination of garlic cream cheese, mozzarella, jalapenos and golden crunchy bread and hit the right note. The pickle-spiced Achari Kick Pizza, a cheese blend of mozzarella and cottage cheese, onion and green chillies, finished off with coriander and mustard oil was another culinary delight which we did savour every bite of. However, it was the enticing hot blend of red chilli paste with Juno’s classic sauce, topped with pickled red peppers, red chilli flakes and Tabasco sauce which made for the most ravishing Four Pepper Pizza that has us crushing over it. Fab or Drab: The freshness and honesty in pizza preparations is definitely what’s hot. Also, with a glutenfree range of pizzas and really healthy ones by Juno’s, it has taken the concept of junk out of fast food. Getting enthralled by the power of organic ingredients and of course, the secret of the lip-smacking sauce, we give Juno’s a big thumbs up! ADDRESS: K emps Corner, Diamond M arket, BKC, One Indiabulls, Lower Parel, R City M all, Ghatkopar West, Powai, Borivali West, Vile Parle

Cuisine: Continental, Indian Bites and Booze: While the concept has been around for a while internationally, the idea of beer gardens is a fairly new one in India. In fact, the first one recently set up shop in Mumbai in the suburb of Bandra. Unfortunately, the place is located in a ‘blink-and-miss’ spot and can be rather difficult to spot. As the concept suggests, the place comes with a garden set up that’s a little too dim in the evenings, but is comfortable nonetheless. The furniture is kept simple and minimalistic against the backdrop of grey walls and tall windows that are big enough to let in ample amount of light. Kaitlyn’s does not have its own in-house brews yet, but the ones that they serve are just are delicious, We tried the Kolsch, Belgian Wit, Saison and Stout, out of which the Belgian Wit and Stout brews were our favourite! We paired the beers with the Kaitlyn’s Beer Garden Special Pizza, the Chicken Animal Friends, the Peri Peri Chicken Wings and the Chicken Lasooni Tikka. The Pizza and Animal Fries are definitely a must-try especially if you’re craving oodles of cheese, while the Lasooni Tikka is smoky and delicious! We also called for the Herb Crusted Chicken with Pesto Risotto for the main course which was fragrant with herbs and will definitely go down well with the pesto lovers. We ended the meal with a Brownie in Beer Sauce, which unfortunately was a little too hard for our liking Fab or Drab: Overall, Kaitlyn’s Beer Garden is an absolute delight, especially if you’re looking to settle down with a mug of beer after a long hard day at work. We can’t wait to head back. ADDRESS: 201-202, K han House, Hill Road, Bandra West

The Bar Stock Exchange, Kamala Mills Cuisine: Indian, Continental, Fusion Global Bites and Booze: Anyone who is familiar with the pub culture in Mumbai will know that The Bar Stock Exchange (TBSE) is one of the most prominent and buzzing watering holes in the city. And, the fact that they have added another branch to their cluster of pubs dotted across the city is proof enough that the market is flourishing for this brand. At its new set up at Kamala Mills, the concept is pretty much the same. Drinks are priced as per its stock market, with prices dropping and rising as per their demand. In comparison to its other branches, the Kamala Mills branch is a lot more spacious. The mezzanine floor is buzzing with tables placed at a close, yet roomy distance with each others. The highlight of the interiors is the second floor, which looks like the perfect cross between a beautifully-decorated greenhouse and New York-style loft house. Once you find yourself a table (you’d have to be really lucky, especially on a Wednesday night), we’d suggest you call for scrumptious Misal Pav Fondue and the Cheddar Churros served with Tomato Jam. The Churros had struck the perfect balance between milky goodness and sweet tartness. The Yin and Yang Paneer and Chicken & Cheese Poppers are perfect if you need small nibbles in between drinks. And, if you’re in an indulgent mood, go for the deliciously meaty Loaded Kheema fries or Cheesy TBSE Pizzan. We also tried the Amritsari Kulcha Platter, comprised of three different types of stuffed mini kulchas. Between all that nibbling and guzzling, if you have any space left in your tummy, we’d suggest you save it for the Red Velvet Oreo Triffle. Fab or Drab: If you haven’t figured it out already, we are quite smitten by TBSE, Kamala Mills. Its spacious, buzzing, trendy, and doesn’t compromise on quality. The ambience serves as the perfect pick-me-up especially if you’re suffering from mid-week blue. Don’t forget to drop by, especially if you’re in the neighbourhood. Graffiti Pokemon Go

Did you watch the show Pokemon as a child and wish you could own one? We all did and now, our dream has become a virtual reality. The app “Pokemon Go,” is a free location -based mobile game released in July for iOS and Android. The game quickly became one of the most dowloaded games with up to 75 million downloads in a few days. It allows players to capture, battle and train Pokemon, which appear on screens as though in real world. A new addition called Pokemon Go Plus with a Bluetooth low energy device notifies a player when a Pokemon or Pokestop is nearby. The app has one positive feature; it makes you exercise because you can’t find a Pokemon lying on your bed!

Snapchat Memories

The app Snapchat was all about real time sharing and posting pictures and videos that were happening at the moment. Now, The LA based company Snapchat introduced Memories this month where you can share old snaps from your camera roll. It reflects the app’s growing status as the default camera for millions of users. Now, the privilege of #throwbackthursday is not only with Instagram but with Snapchat too. The app remains the same though where the picture you post remains for 24 hours. It is a living social camera roll in which photos and videos can be edited and shared long after they are taken. Now, you can save your Snapchat stories and view them later in Memories.

Latest Instagram Feature

Instagram has introduced a Snapchat-like feature where you can upload stories. The Internet went berserk calling it a case of copy-paste. Instagram stories is a new feature that displays at the top of your newsfeed and lets you share photos/videos through two tracks: the feed and stories. Your feed is permanent, whereas your stories have a 24-hour shelf life that expire after 24 hours, just like Snapchat. Some people especially adults find using Snapchat a little confusing due to its interface technicalities compared to Instagram which is userfriendly. But Snapchat has Geofliters for location based snaps with branding and themes.
