n a recent non-stop transatlantic flight, I scrolled upon a movie ‘Florence Foster Jenkins.’ Being a huge fan of Meryl Streep, I decided to go ahead and watch the period comedy. As usual she does a fab job of acting, entertaining and this time even singing, off pitch as it may be. Streep then said this very powerful line in spite of being a tone deaf old heiress who loves music and said ‘Music has been and is my life. Music matters’ This sentence stayed with me and I realized that it is so true! Music is such an important part of life and all around us at almost all times. We decided to go ahead with our cover story on the music industry and have interviewed the most interesting people in the music fraternity. Going beyond singing there is a lot more! So we have our band of boys The Other People, the MD and Asia Head of Universal music, the Global CEO of Sunburn among others. We elucidate the distinct and unconventional careers in the music industry which have witnessed a boom over time. Page 22 of our Educate section also has a detailed story on the types of entrance exams, how to prepare for them and tips from industry experts. The story covers the SATs, TOEFL, GMAT and other competitive exams which a student looking to study abroad will have to attempt. Harvard which only launches programmes curated within the US for the world has rolled out a digitial learning initiative for India The University will conduct these courses for people starting out their careers across the country The objective of the e-courses are to make students employable The initiative will be free of cost initially, to connect with audiences. IIT MADRAS AND ABB INDIA TO DEVELOP MICROGRID MODELS FOR ACCESS TO ELECTRICITY IN REMOTE AREAS
As part of the Uchchatar Avishkar Yojana scheme and IIT Madras and ABB India signed an MOU to develop power management systems. This will help with the governement’s aim of generating capacity of 40GW in the next five years through grid connected rooftop solar PV and small scale plants. IIT Madras is at the forefront in developing energy efficient solar PV microgrid solutions for use in urban, rural and off-grid power requirements said Prof Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director IIT Madras. The project scope includes microgrids of 20 to 100kW with battery storage. Studies and simulation of various system components along with related control and optimization logics, protection criteria, monitoring and communication will also be done.

The Department of Posts released Lovely Professional University Postal Stamp and Special Cover The stamp is worth five rupees and has the logo of the university and a rainbow and butterfly on it. Lovely Professional University is the first university in India to have a stamp. Postmaster General Punjab West Region, PM Lal said that Lovely Professional University has rendered marvellous service in education and providing employment. The stamps were handed over the Pro Chancellor Rashmi Mittal. The Department of Posts will also host a philatelic exhibition at Lovely Professional University open to the public.

International student enrollment in the U.S. tops one million for the first time Students from India increased by 25 per cent to 165,918. This is a record number of Indian students moving to the United States. India accounts for one out of every six international students in the United States of America. Three-fifth of these are at graduate level out of which three-fourth are in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). Open Doors released the data to mark the celebration of International Education week. International Education Week attracts students from other countries to study, learn and exchange experiences in the United States.

ou’d be surprised to know that patents existed as early as the 15th century. The first ever statutory patent was regarded to be the Venetian Patent Statue of 1450. These were issued by a decree which meant that new and inventive devices had to be intimated to the Republic to obtain legal protection against infringement. At that time, they were issued for a period of 10 years and were mostly sought after by Venetians in the field of glass making. As they emigrated, they sought protection in their new resident countries and this led to the spread of patents to other countries. So what exactly are patents? Patents are a legal standpoint that protects your work from others making, selling and using them. Today patents are issued for a period of 20 years, to encourage competition and innovation. They are seen as better than trademarks and copyrights from an economical and practical standpoint. Difference between Copyrights and Patents Copyrights protect intellectual property like books, plays, works of art, software, drawings, maps and other such works by virtue of their creation. It is advised to register all work in the event
the ownership is questioned or copyright is infringed. The main difference between copyrights and patents are the types of property they are designed to protect. While patents usually protect inventions and theories, copyrights cover most creative works. Difference between Trademarks and Patents Unlike patents which protect individual works, trademarks protect brand names, services, logos and other related devices. In the larger scheme of things, trademarks are used to identify the original source of a product or service and separate them from their competition. Trademarks do not prevent other brands from offering similar services or products, but disallows others from using similar logos.

Some examples of design patents include IKEA chairs, designer chairs and even shoes.
Types of patents Now that you know what a patent is, the next step is to understand what patents would work best for you. They are broadly classified into three categories.
Plant patents Although the least common types of patents, plant patents are given to novel asexually reproducible plants. This includes cultivating different types of plants to create hybrids and also new varieties of seedlings.
Utility patents New and useful inventions which are not known to others in the same field fall under this category. Utility patents cover all inventions that fall under a process, a machine, something manufactured, composition

From being a cricketer to body-building, how has the journey been? How and why the transition in career? Cricket was the first game I played. I represented my school as well at State at championships. While I was studying in London, I was a part of my college’s cricket team and with every game I played, I got better at it . While I was playing, I always felt that I wanted a good physique and getting into fitness happened quite naturally. I wanted to be flexible, increase my stamina and look good. What were the challenges during the Mr. India National Champion in 2014? I was the national champion in 2013, but 2014 was a bigger affair. It was one of the biggest shows in India. Apart from physical preparation, there was a lot of mental preparation. Every minute of preparation counted. I was on a strict diet as well. Before the competition, it was all about making sure I could look the best for my country. There were over 500 competitors. Winning the show made all the challenges seem worth it. You’ve taken part in the Olympia in Hong Kong last year. How was the experience? I was up against professional athletes, and although I did not win, I got a good
standing at the event which was a great boost. It was the perfect opportunity for me to represent the country. I’m taking part in the Olympia this year as well, and the goal is to win it this time. Do you feel that the bodybuilding scene in the country is still at a nascent stage? Bodybuilding in India is at a great stage. Even allied services as well like gyms, fitness products, protein powders are picking up at. I still feel that the industry could be promoted better among the media. Know your goals and what you want your physical appearance to be and work towards that. If it’s a lifestyle decision, you got to understand what needs to be done. If you’re going professional, you have to look as best as you can. Although bodybuilding is picking up fitness education should be given more priority. You have trained and worked with several celebrities. Can you name a few? I have worked with a number of celebrities in the past including Eesha Deol, Ranbir Kapoor, Jackky Bhagnani. What is your advice for those wanting to pave a career in body-building? Right now, it is one of the best times to get into fitness
and body building. There are so many job opportunities as well like protein powder specialists, managing a gym, nutritionists, physiotherapists, the opportunities are vast. Social media has helped the growth of the industry and it’s doing really well. If one really wants to build a career in the field of fitness, go to a professional, look up to them and follow their footpaths. Education is the key. What is your daily exercise routine? My day starts around 9am with a protein shake and the gym for a round of fast set cardio. This is followed by egg whites and museli or a grilled chicken with vegetables. By evening I’m back at the gym after a pre workout meal, where I work on two body parts a day followed by a post workout meal. I train six days a week and when I’m competing , twice a day with cardio.

ntrance exams are the bane of most students’ careers. That bridge between you and the college and country of your dreams. But they don’t have to be all that scary anymore. We know the struggle, we’ve done out bit to help you ace those exams. Scoring high needs more than just determination. “The key is practice. consultant, Karan Gupta. Karan also says that for a student to ace their entrance exams, devising a strategy is the way to go. “Decide the number of tests you are going to practice, divide that same test into sections and devise strategies for each section” he adds. He also advises students to start preparing for such exams in advance and set goals and targets for themselves.
Why are entrance exams important? Entrance exams play an equally important role in college admissions, apart from class grades. These tests are designed to measure a student’s skill and allow colleges to understand whether an applicant is ready for college-level work. Many colleges also use entrance exam scores to understand candidate personally and
what will value additions they will bring to the institution. The importance of entrance exams scores vary from college to college, so it’s important to understand the admission policies of each individual college you want to apply to. FOREIGN SHORES Practise reading slowly, but with confidence, enough so that you can remember what you read in order to summarize the passage. The listening section might be a bit difficult, especially if you have problems understanding accents. Watch a lot of movies and use earphones if possible. The speaking section is probably one of the toughest parts of the exam. To practise, speak to friends and family a lot in English during the weeks leading up to the exam. If you’re also answering the GRE, then the writing section should be a breeze. GRE The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a standardized test in the

USA which is an admissions requirement for most grad schools. The exam aims to measure verbal reasoning, analytical writing, quantitative reasoning and critical thinking skills. These skills may not be based on a specific field of study, and are often revolved around knowledge acquired over the years. In several grad schools, the importance of GRE scores varies between schools and departments. It can go from being a mere formality to an important selection factor. How to ace GRE Allow yourself as much time to prepare and be as diligent as you can. Understand the exam first and which areas you will need to devote more time towards.
In the verbal reasoning section, focus on reading comprehension, sentence completion and sentence equivalence. While preparing for the quantitative reasoning section, practise mathematical and numerical abilities and real world applications. The section includes arithmetic, geometry, algebra and data analysis, so make sure to brush up on these skills. Analytic writing is an important part of your exam, so put on your critical thinking hat and ace this exam. SAT The SAT is one of the most used standardized test used for college admissions across the United States. The SATs are typically answered by
students in high school. The College Board states that the test measures literacy and writing skills which are required for college. Experts say that the SAT assesses how well students can analyze and solve problems under pressure. SAT scores when used in combination with a student’s grade point average (GPA) provides a reliable indication of success in college.

Start simple, read a book, talk to as many people as you can in English or watch a movie with subtitles. You could also find a teacher who will help you with grammar and be a good person to converse with. Learn from your mistakes also; ask a friend to help point out your mistakes when talking. SIR! I f you haven’t already witnessed the colossal debacle that was Melania Trump’s speech at the Republican National Convention in July, we’re quite sure that you may have at least heard about it. It’s not uncommon for a celebrity to come under fire for ripping off of someone else’s work, but this incident particularly made ripples in the media. The reason being that a passage in her speech displayed an uncanny, striking resemblance to first lady, Michelle Obama’s speech at the 2008 Democratic National Convention which took place in Denver. The speech included all the

One of the biggest precedents of the year, the Melania Trump plagiarised speech debacle left some in splits, while the others raving. And while the situation may have been somewhat comical, we’d like you to know that such incidences are a plenty, and we’d like to give you a lowdown right sentiments, and spoke about the values and lessons that “they need to pass on to the many generations to follow,” – all of which was spoken about in the exact arrangement in Michelle’s speech. What happened then? Well, after a lot of hullabaloo over who should be fired, the Trump campaign hushed all the outrage by simply releasing a statement on the speech, without addressing the plagiarism charge. And that was that. However, while the travesty was blatantly dismissed, not all cases of plagiarism go unexcused. We talk about five of the most high-profile plagiarism cases, that might leave you in shock, amused or even both.
J.K Rowling In 2009, the estate of Adrian Jacobs, a children’s author sued Bloomsbury, Rowling’s publishers for 500 million pounds for copying parts of his work in the 4th Harry Potter Series. His family claimed that a scene from the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was similar to his The Adventures of Willy the Wizard: Livid Land. It was countered by Bloomsbury saying that “This claim is without merit and will be defended vigorously.” The case, however, was dismissed on the basis of lack of similarities between the two books.
The Jayson Blair Scandal When a reporter, Jayson Blair wrote an article for The New York Times, little did he know that it’s going to kick up a storm. Two days later, he was on a call with the Times national editor Jim Roberts, who was enquiring about the similarities between his article and the one written by Macarena Hernandez from the San Antonio ExpressNews. Further to this, a series of enquiries resulted in the discovery of plagiarism and fabrication of details, quotes and dates in a number of articles written by Blair. He resigned the very next month.
Farid Zakaria While as columnist, Indian American journalist Farid Zakaria was suspended from the Time magazine in 2012, amidst allegations of plagiarism. One of his columns on gun control toted similarities with a New Yorker article by Jill Lepore. Zakaria released a public statement in which he apologised and stated that he had made “a really terrible mistake on his part”. However, the controversy resurfaced two years later when Esquire and The Week magazines also reported the allegations made against Zakaria on his pseudonymous blogs.
Jane Goodall Jane is a lauded primatologist, who is renowned for her vast studies on chimps in the wild. However, in 2013, she released a book based on the plant word, which toted at least a dozen passages that were borrowed without any credit or attribution, from a whole lot of websites. Her book, Seeds of Hope: Wisdom and Wonder from the World of Plants, contained phrases and paragraphs from Wikipedia, and was co-written by freelance writer, Gail Hudson, who had previously contributed to two of Goodalls past books.
Kaavya Viswanathan Kaavya Vishwanathan’s book, 'How Opal Mehta got kissed, Got wild and got a life' was rumoured to have signed a $1 million deal and her book had climbed onto number 32 on the New York Times bestseller list. Rumours of movie deals and a second book began to make rounds. Hit with allegations of plagiarism from other authors, her book was eventually pulled out and the deal was revoked, leaving it to be worth less than half a million.

peak to a twentysomething and chances are that you’ll see the constant jobhopping in their profile. A summary of the new employee of today’s workplace: Most will change jobs every two years. Most say that money is not their 28 Youth Incorporated JANUARY 2017
number one concern in evaluating a job. If you are one of these, stop at it before it jeopardizes your career. Try and make the job work Is there anything you could be doing differently to make the job work? Could you ask for a transfer or a shift
change? Is there anything that would make a difference and convince you to stay? Don’t complain Nobody likes complainers, regardless of how legitimate the complaints are. If you don’t like your job, I can guarantee there are plenty of
other people who would jump at the chance to get it. When the job market is as upside down in the employer’s favour as it is now, be really careful about complaining. Be positive. Negativity is contagious, so look at the brighter side of things! Maintaining job stability when personal life is unstable Just grin and bear it—pretend everything is fine and dandy while you’re screaming on the inside? Take a bunch of mental health days and use up your sick leave? Take your personal life to work and use company time to problem-solve? Ask for the indulgence of your boss and co-workers, complaining that your personal crisis is an excuse to under-perform? While these are all methods that people consciously or unconsciously choose, truth is that none of them really help, and most will jeopardize your continued employment. It actually helps when your job is so demanding that you don’t have time to think of much else during those hours. What if you resolve to immerse yourself into the job during work hours? Try harder! Do it better! Focus more! This is one aspect of your life that can actually improve if you look at it as a blessing, a respite, and a safe haven from the other conflict
of life. After all, it’s a source of income—that’s already a positive. It’s (usually) a place where you’ve formed some pleasant acquaintances— another positive. Make an honest attempt to protect your workplace from the cares and struggles of your personal problems, and you may actually find that your career success has become a beacon of light in your life. Increasing your market value or “employability factor” To keep your employability factor high, build and maintain professional networks. We cannot stress this enough. When you build outstanding relationships with managers, peers, clients, and vendors, don’t let it evaporate when the business relationship changes. Get e-mail addresses, postal addresses, and home phone numbers as your contacts permit. Why? So that you can stay in touch with these people… they know your value in the marketplace and will often be willing to help you find your next position – and of course, you will provide them with leads and support too, when the time comes. Even if you feel like all is just ducky at work, strongly encourage a preventative maintenance program for your career. Keep your
resume updated with your latest achievements and your interview skills sharp. Also keep an ongoing file of your accomplishments, performance evaluations, and recently completed continuing education, and update that resume twice a year. If you don’t have anything to add on a regular basis, refer to Part 1. Another way to remain gainfully employed is to rethink your present definition of work. Consider temping, contract work, and even moonlighting toward full-fledged self-employment. These are increasingly valid ways of being employed. Stay in touch with your talents and aspirations and don’t worry that career switching or numerous jobs might “look bad” on your resume. As long as you’re learning and making a living, no one will fault you for trying new jobs. Proactively communicate Be vocal about these problems. Don't keep it inside you and let it kill you. Speak to family and friends and seek their advice rather than silently bearing the brunt of your boss or job.This will also lead them to understand your situation better and be there with you when you most need them. It doesn’t matter if you’re a music artist or an appreciator. Careers in music offer huge opportunities and growth,

If you are passionate about listening to new music every day, organizing events and creating original content revolving around music, then this is definitely the field for you. When and how did you realize that singing was the career for you? I started singing at a very young age and represented my school in various singing contests and won prizes. I loved music but my parents wanted me to become an engineer so I completed my course in 2006 from
How rewarding is singing as a career? Any career is rewarding if you are successful. For me, it’s extremely rewarding as a singer because I love music. The most satisfying feeling for me is to receive the love of my listeners. The appreciation I get from my well-wishers is the biggest reward for me. The highest high moment for you in your career? What did it take to be able to achieve that? There have been few instances which I consider as the high moments in my career. The most important one would be the release of my song 'Phir Mohabbat' from the movie 'Murder 2'. This song gave me my an identity as a playback singer and it changed the course of my career. I'll always be thankful to Mithoon sir for having the faith in me and giving me some wonderful songs in films like Yaariyan, Lamhaa and Ek Villain. How important is it to garner formal education in singing?
I strongly feel it is necessary to have a formal training in music for any aspiring musician. Professional singing involves a lot of technicalities and a trained singer will always have an edge over others in that regard. Although it’s the appropriate application of the knowledge which is required especially as a playback singer. Taking into account the cut-throat competition in the industry, what are the qualities that help a singer stand above others? I think the key factor is 'originality'. You need to have a unique quality which distinguishes a singer from others. It's nice to admire our seniors but we should not ape them. Everyone has a unique expression within themselves and that I think should be tapped. An advice for aspiring singers. How can they start off and make it big in the industry? My advice would be to work hard and be focused. This industry is glamorous and a huge number of people get attracted just because of that The most important thing is to understand how good or bad you are and work on it! 2017 JANUARY Youth Incorporated 33

LOA DE D The Other People talk about the struggles and rewards of being in a band.
How did The Other People come together and is it easy finding the right band mates? Over the years we have seen band members come and go. We are always working towards finding the right team that gels well and where everyone compliments each other. It isn’t easy, it takes time, but in our case, we have a good team and a good understanding of each other. Your band has been around for 11 years now and played in India as well as internationally, so what are the struggles you have faced so far? We do only English music, which in India is a major risk to begin with. Lack of support has always been an area we have struggled with. 34 Youth Incorporated JANUARY 2017
Within the industry, there is scope for support, but not too much offered. We have worked with some really great people who have not only supported us but gone out of their way to make things happen for us, and it’s important that you find these people who want to take your music to another level. After a point, it is more than just a business and you have to take risks. Taking risks, back in 2010, we were lucky to get two opening gigs for artists including Michael Learns To Rock, and from there on, our careers slowly but surely started to take off a bit. Please share your experience recording your own studio album #Dreamers #Believers #Lovers When we decided to record
an album, it was an all new experience for us. More so, because we are used to performing on stage. It took us a long time to get into the zone of a performing in a studio. When recording in a studio, every small mistake can be heard, and you have to be as close to perfection as you can get. It took us a while, and we spent close to two years in the studio recording the first album, thanks to a lovely gentleman by the name of Achille Forler, who was Managing Director of Universal Music Publishing in India at the time. He believed in us and pushed us more than anyone else has before, and helped us grow and made the first album possible. We’ve also made music videos and honestly it was stressful, but it’s a
completely fun experience at the same time. Being an all male band what prompted you to cover tracks on women’s empowerment? Social messages have always played a strong part of what we believe in. We believe that music is a powerful tool of expression and communication and what better way than to put it into song? One of our very first songs was ‘Save The World’ which, whilst having a strong melody and big anthem-like chorus, speaks about awareness amongst the present and the future generations. We even have kids singing on the track! We’ve also sung about the risks we’ve taken through ‘Dancing for the world’. We’re
also going to be singing about issues people can relate to. Women’s empowerment has always been close to us and we’ve done so many shows on topics like these and we think it’s our way of giving that tiny bit back to society. What is the scope for a youngster to take up playing in a band professionally? It’s a lot better than it was 20 years ago. There are plenty more avenues to experiment with. Making a career playing in a band is tough, but there are venues that support upcoming music. The biggest and greatest change is that people are veering more towards live music today. Even private events prefer having a band over recorded music. You cannot compare
good live music to anything. Financially, it is tough, but everything is today. The initial days will pay a meagre amount, but if you keep going and build up a reputation and a fan base, there is DEFINITELY potential to make it a very viable career! It can be hard, but definitely not impossible. Any tips/recommendations for upcoming musicians and bands? If you are serious about being in a band, give it every single thing you have got. Set yourself a timeline. Do everything you can to make it work. Meet people, be selfish (in a healthy way) and most importantly, understand your audience; as without them, you will not exist!

The live music and exciting events here exude infectious energy always! We speak to the iconic brand’s Co - Founder and Executive Director Jay Singh who tells us everything that it takes to build a strong music brand. How has Hard Rock Cafe evolved over the years? 10 years long journey especially in a country like India which is constantly evolving. Over the years, we have involved with the 36 Youth Incorporated JANUARY 2017
market in terms of the way we look at music, live events and performances. We even got the food and liquor evolved. It’s an evolution as opposed to a revolution in any of these areas. Hard Rock as we know is a strong brand, with a strong identity, people relate to it. So we have constantly evolved in tandem with people’s evolving tastes and preferences. How does Hard Rock Cafe help promote young and upcoming artists? We do more than 3,500 live performances which is far more than any other brand. There are so many big names and current brands that have grown up with us. So the
process is like, an upcoming brand that is interested approaches us and sends us a clip. If we see potential and also it fits in our genre, we give opportunity. If they do well, we give them more opportunities to perform and allow them to go play a bigger gig abroad. How is there a change in the music scene? I think live music is becoming more mainstream. Any and every bar is generally going to have live performance on various occasions. Hard Rock can take credit for popularizing it in India. More and more people are getting used to it. Performances are also changing and moving

What are the other entertaining activities you plan to introduce at Hard Rock? We already have standup comedy nights. lose your identity. Keep your passion. It’s hard to do but stick to it. Looking ahead, where do you see Hard Rock Cafe in the next ten years, in terms of the types of musicians and bands that will be performing at Hard Rock Cafe? 10 years is a long, long time. In India, one would hope big artists would emerge in India, those that are ones with global recognition. I would love to see an Indian equivalent of Coldplay that
Any plans for the 10 year anniversary special? It is like a year-long celebration. There will be 72 live performances pan India. Also on November 30 we have a cocktail evening apart from an auction. Memorabilia from 12-13 musicians will be auctioned. The funds will be used to further music streams for under privileged kids, buy them musical instruments or send them to music school. What are some of the different activities fans can expect from Hard Rock Cafe in the near future? December is a big month for us. We have a lot of performances lined up in this month. There surely is an indication of the growth of EDM scene in times to come. It's been a great journey for live music properties in India which has seen progress. How has the journey of Sunburn been? Making Sunburn a much loved brand which had started as a small cult event on the beaches of Goa and then it took the shape of a festival so large that our adoring fans kept asking for more and more. A festival
once a year limited to one destination was just not enough for them. Therefore, we decided to bring Sunburn arenas – headlined by a world class artist, Sunburn reloads – headlined by great dance music artists apt for smaller towns and cities and Sunburn campus – which takes over one night in a college festival with dance music artists across India. What is the process of taking up artists or bands and creating new live music properties? When it comes to booking the artist we have excellent relationships with all top artists and agencies, they trust us to deliver flawless shows which is very important. Please explain the planning and production that goes on behind the scenes? There are multiple challenges that are associated with putting together with events of this stature, having said that we are thankful to the police as well as the multiple government agencies that always lend us their full
cooperation. Along with it we have our production partners and volunteers to thank who come together to put this labour of love and music together for all the Sunburn fans. Security planning is the most important part of such events and we have internal teams that work with experts both domestic and international with adequate experience to plan. Inputs from and local authorities is also taken. Infact, all security, and safety plans are approved by the government authorities. Multiple checks and cordoning at entry with local authority supervision and CCTV cameras
discourage any mischief. Medical attention is one of the most important things as we do get many cases of heat stroke, breathlessness etc; hence we medical watch dogs in place too. All numbers are done scientifically to ensure timely help and we always a tie up with a close by hospital as well as identify fastest route to take, if any, severe cases to hospital in minimum time. In terms of production, we have our international benchmarks set to keep up with the global standards that our brand stands for as well as our aim to provide our fans the best experience in the business.
How do you market and promote of events? Marketing is as very important tool for promotions of our events. Sometimes the announcement and line-up organically gets fans to buy the tickets. Social Media marketing is booming these days and it works brilliantly for us as well. But marketing won’t be effective if just focused on one medium. We believe marketing platform of all mediums should go hand in hand to achieve a much better result. A piece of advice for those aspiring to chart a career in this field? Live industry is a really booming industry in India. My advice to the youth to aspire their career in the live entertainment industry would be to keep yourself updated with changes in the business as a particular trend doesn't last for long. Being in the music industry for over a decade we’ve seen end number of change and need of music in particular markets. To be in this industry one should have enthusiasm in learning and adapting to changes and innovations. The music business is looking for people who are really passionate about music and want to work in a fast-paced everchanging sector.

IT RIGHT To make it as an artist, listen to your record label says Devraj Sanyal, MD, Universal Music India
Besides being a famous record label company you also manage artist at Universal Music, please talk more about it When I took over Universal Music India in early 2011, we moved from being a standalone record label, which found and curated independent musicians, to now a full-fledge music business. So we added new verticals like merchandizing, branded content, music festivals and live events. In short, everything to do with music. For example, we might approach a client and propose to do their jingles or digital videos. In the scheme of things, we are still writing 40 Youth Incorporated JANUARY 2017
music and still recording music. We also train and groom artists. When we started, we did a mere five gigs a month, today we do close to 1200 gigs a year. How has the field of artist management changed in the past few years? The industry is far more transparent. Artists have grown to realize that they do not want to be managed by mom-n-pop-shops. They want someone professional. It is because of this demand, that the industry has been cleaned up and everything is under watertight contracts, money is accounted for and there is professionalism in the sector.
What are some of your biggest challenges today? Opportunity is the biggest challenge in the field. Despite doing everything we can, we have only cracked the surface. We can’t deny that very few corporate companies will hire an artist. The real money is in the wedding and party industry. While we are not averse to working with them, they are not as structured as we would like them to be. At present we have tapped into only 10 per cent of the market. Piracy is also a problem in the industry. One out of 10 people download music through paid channels. There are also cases of brands and advertising paying listeners for music. But, I think, things are changing and the crackdown on torrents and corruption is heading the right direction. What has your journey taught you about being in the profession? Personally, I feel I am learning something new every day. But the one thing that has stuck with me is give respect to get respect. I think, if you do that consistently, you will have the greatest relationships, you will be able to grow your business and forge your way ahead of the market curve. You also need to be very innovative in the music industry. Do stuff before others can. You have to take risks. I would rather try
and lose, than not try at all. If you do that, you will succeed. How many artists do you have in your portfolio (Indian & International)? Universal Music is one of the world’s leading record labels. In India we have about 40 artists exclusively under our label and around 100 more non-exclusively. We have artists of every genre imaginable from Adnan Sami, Indus Creed, Ananya Birla, Justin Bieber, The Weeknd, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Sam Smith and many more. How do you successfully promote a new album and artist under your label ? We do not operate around
albums anymore. I prefer to work with individual songs. My maxim is that ‘a great song is a great song is a great song’! If it comes from a singer, good, if it comes from a singer-songwriter, even better. Everything boils down to the fact that it starts and ends with a great song. At Universal Music we listen to thousands of songs every year. A lot of upcoming artists send us their tracks, and we listen to each and every one of them, pick out the ones with potential and mentor and groom them to success. Our team also has all ears open to scout talent. What do you think are the skills required to succeed in this field?
You need to be an artist with the passion for writing deep, meaningful songs as well as be brilliantly unique. You need to know your traits. Think globally and what will work. A piece of advice for those aspiring to chart a career as an artist? Simplicity to me is key. If you can convey your message as simply as possible, big thumbs up from me. Stay humble. Don’t be a snob if you want to succeed. You have to be hardworking. At Universal Music, our mantra is artist first, even if we part ways or lose money, but we will never hurt anyone. India as a nation is starved for entertainment options with Bollywood and cricket being the only formats accepted at a mass level. However there is a huge market for non-Bollywood music also which is also something that gives muscle to our campaign ideas. Music helps us reach exact niches according to the brands requirement thus giving us the luxury of micro targeting communication to almost the exact audience. We can safely say that music helps us target the message to the right audience which
helps in completing 50 per cent of the job along a marketing campaign. The final success of the campaign idea also depends largely on the communication and the actual product, however targeting the right audience helps win half the battle. On the flip side correctly programmed music also helps engage the audience in a synegrous manner to the brands personality and values. Hence music can play a two pronged role in addressing brand needs, depending on the situation and its needs. Shark+Ink also specializes in artist management, what does it take to be a good artist managemer today? To be a good artist manager, it is important to know your artist and know your market. In-depth knowledge of the music landscape helps in early planning and development of an artist's career. It is also imperative to empathize with the artist to understand the needs and requirements of the talent you represent. It is also important to be outgoing and have a good network and skills as the entire business
runs on how good your network is and relationships are, because the market relies on your expertise as music experts. It is also important to understand that it is a volatile business with constant market changes and evolution and it pays to be two steps ahead in reading and analyzing future trends. Lastly we consider it to be most important to be passionate, inquisitive and relentless. Be a SHARK. Is there a selection process for the music that goes along with particular brands? Can you give me any examples? One of the most important things for us is to treat brands like people. This is also where we find most marketers lacking. Understanding
the brand and treating its roadblocks needs a certain level of EQ. Understanding that a brand represents certain values, the brands characteristics and its TG, help determine the right musical fit which attract and retain brand loyalists. Understanding that a brandWhe like Adidas Originals is cutting edge, under-ground culture inspired, retro modern hip hop inspired helps us understand that artists representing and endorsing the brands need to resonate such values in their music and persona too and hence we would circum fit artists like Zokhuma or an Arsh as opposed to a brand like Harley Davidson where new age experimental electronic
music will be an absolute no go on both front. Neither will it work in attracting the audience nor will it help keep them glued and engaged at the event. Harley lovers are purists at heart and in such a case nothing fits the profile of a Harley lover more than rock music. This may not be true at an individual for all Harley lovers but it does speak the same language of the brands imagery of mean machines built on American engineering and rock and roll values. What is your advice for youngsters who want to get into the field? The music, marketing, content and entertainment industry is not a party. It comes with loads of hard work, late nights, long hours and dark circles. It is important to stay ahead of the curve and be prepared for changes that the nascent industry encounters in the near future. Research, research and research some more for innovations, ideas and you will never know what new cutting edge ideas can come out of some detailed research and a few good brain-storming sessions. s someone who has been working in consulting firms the entire length of her career, networking has continued to be a buzzword. While jokes about how people network to not-work always elicit a little laughter in a group, the truth is contrary to this notion. Since time immemorial, people have networked to generate more work and create opportunities for 46 Youth Incorporated JANUARY 2017
themselves. Today, we do it a little more intentionally, and much like sex in India, we are all doing it without admitting to doing it. Today, knowing the right people has almost become a social currency and gregariousness is reaping rich rewards. Gone are the days when solitude was considered an asset; today moving in crowds and showing your social connections is the thing to do.
Modern day networking has acquired new meanings. Some see it as an opportunity to pick up an expensive glass of wine and bill it to the company while others see it as a stepping stone to that next big promotion. It’s obviously important that people should know you to employ you or propagate your agenda and even introverts of the world (much like myself), are beginning to see, in all their shy glory, the perks of being
known. Move over Alexander Pope’s Solitude and enter the age of the Gatsby! What are the new rules then? It’s really not rocket science, we are programmed to be social and interact with people but there are a few rules and guidelines and so, it could be worth your time to give these a quick scan. Here are some rules that I have learnt over the years, with great reluctance. When you identify someone you would like to network with, try these things – Find talking points See what you can find out aside from their work and strike up a conversation about their interests. May be that like a certain genre of music or are an avid art collector – the passion points that people love to get chatting about because after a certain point in life, we have all earned enough accolades at work but it is the stuff that we don’t get paid to do that leads us to become multidimensional. Like my manager in the previous job had an active interest in bartending; now that’s a real cool conversation point, don’t you think? He could talk about it for hours and soon, you realize that he may be really good at work but it’s his hobbies that really rev his engine!
Help first Help them with absolutely anything. Because when someone owes you something, you are more likely to get help from them. This is not to make you completely opportunistic but really, helping people gives them an opinion of how you can be an asset to someone. Think clearly Think about your objectives. This will greatly help you guide the conversation in a direction. Are you looking for a job, if yes, then you can build that in your conversation by saying, "well if you are ever looking for a person, I will be very happy to". Don’t be afraid to take the lead – what’s the worst that can happen? Always network Network without an objective too – so that if someday you have a need, you have a number. Today’s boring chat could become tomorrow’s sparkling business interest. We must take interest in varied things – information is a source of great power and there is a lot of merit in speaking to people whose views are entirely different from yours. You never know when opportunity will strike. It’s enriching for your knowledge base to see something from an entirely
different perspective. Network anywhere Café? Bars? Queue for a movie ticket? You name it. The less forced and formal it is, the better. It is said that people are more relaxed when not in a work setup. Prep a blurb When someone asks you what do you do? Don’t simply say I am a consultant – tell them in a brief but interesting way. I am a psychologist and I help companies become better employers, for instance. This provides a hook and room for greater conversation Always remain prepared for a celebrity conversation What if you were in the lift with Richard Branson? What can you say in one minute that might generate interest? Absolutely always, be ready with your contact details (business contact or a fun way to remember your name/ number!) These are seven commandments that I recommend young people arm themselves with. We all say hello and move on but we remember people that tell us stories. Keep a short one ready and spurt it out whenever you see someone you would like in your network! The name flea market comes from the French marché aux puces. The name was given to a Parisian market which sold second hand good, which were rumoured to carry fleas. Today flea markets are more than a place to pick up second hand goods. From trendy clothes, junk jewellery and antiques to electronics and furniture, flea markets sell everything. Visiting a flea market is a fun experience if you love to shop or are looking to redecorate your house and want to pick up a good bargin or two. It’s true that there is nothing more relaxing than retail therapy, and a walk through a flea market filled with quirky and unique items is the perfect way to unwind and relax and is a real shopper’s paradise. While shopping at a flea market, remember to bring your best bargaining skills to the table, keep your eyes open for you never know when you will find something and keep plenty of change with you. If you’re in Goa, the Saturday Night Market is a must visit. Located in Arpora, the multi-level market is a treasure trove of handmade jewellery, traditional lamps, Kashmiri carpets, spices, flavoured tea and foreigners selling leather goods, locals selling clothes and handmade dream catchers and lots more. The market also has plenty of food from around the world. One can find Greek, Italian, French and even Mexican cuisine. If all the walking around the market tires you out, head to the centre of the market where live bands will keep you entertained throughout

ROT FAI MARKET
The Rot Fai Market, also known as the Train Market in Bangkok is one of the best night markets in the country. The open air market has a splendid range of yesteryear collectibles and memorabilia. The market is known for its antique furniture, hipster fashion and Mao Kitsch. The huge market is divided into three sections with
vendors selling contemporary fashion and apparel which is quite similar to other markets in Bangkok. Over here you can find a 1950s Cadillac sold next to vintage leather jackets, Japanese action figures and French chandeliers. Some sections of the market even sell electronics. The night market also has a number of restaurants, stalls selling traditional street food and bars for a complete night out. Like all markets, you have to bargain to get a good deal, but prices here are said to be cheaper than most other flea markets. The night market is open from sunset to midnight from Thursday to Saturday. If you’re in Thailand, head here and consider your weekend plans sorted.

While Dubai maybe famous for its malls and grand shopping festivals, the older parts of Dubai still manage to retain their charm of the old souks (markets). Literally meaning, ‘the fleas’ this Parisian market is a furniture aficionados heaven. The market in the Porte de Clignancourt covers an impressive seven hectares and is the largest antique market in the world. On weekends, it is said to get up to 180,000 visitors. The market houses several vendors selling everything needed to set up your perfect house including mirrors, beads, paintings, commodes, textiles and furniture. The market also sells vintage records and clothes. The market is said to have been started in the 19th century by rag pickers who had to dispose of treasures
which they stumbled upon and set shop in the by lanes of the village of Saint Ouen. As the popularity increased and more and more people began frequenting the market, small cafés and restaurants were set up which made the market the ideal place to spend a day. Les Puces also has a wide range of bronze works, tapestry items and kitchen essentials. Open every weekend, Les Puces has to be on your itinerary if you’re headed to Paris.

The Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, Turkey is one of the largest and oldest markets in the world. The bazaar dates back to the 15th century and was initially a textile
trading zone. The market sells beautiful Turkish carpets, pottery, tiles, brass and copperware. Grand Bazaar is also a good place to pick up leather, cotton and wool clothes, meerschaum pipes, bookends, ashtrays and other knick knacks. ust a few days ago I met someone at a party who happens to be the serious kind. I want something serious too but I don’t want to give up my freedom to check out cute

guys and hook up with, for someone so soon. I still want to experiment and experience. A serious relationship is a serious responsibility and I don’t feel like I’m ready to give up my single ways to be
with someone. In a situation like this if your partner is also up for it you can experiment with an open relationship. Okay wait, let me start from the scratch. What is an open relationship? For those of you who do not understand the concept, an open relationship in simple words is a relationship where
both the partners mutually agree upon having sexual relationship other people. We Indians are conditioned a certain way and in a setting that sleeping with someone other than your partner and accepting and allowing your partner to have sex with someone also feels so wrong. Just the thought of it feels so very wrong! We’ve been born and brought up in a culture where sex itself is a taboo so an open relationship is like a farfetched thought. Getting over the jealousy and making it work in India seems extremely difficult. It’s not that it can’t work in India, it’s just that even as a progressive society we aren’t equipped to handle something like polygamy. We have been born and brought up with a particular set of values and beliefs. For us love is being with just one person and never thinking of anyone else. And an open relationship requires unlearning the definition of love that has been taught to us all our lives. On a personal level for people who want it and aren’t possessive in nature it might be a nice idea. But it’s very important for both partners to accept and understand the concept of an open relationship and want it equally. Pushing one partner into the concept of an open relationship might mess up
your relationship. Other than that, it’s also important to set some ground rules and then follow them too. Some couples may want to discuss their hook ups and some might prefer staying shut about it. Maybe your partner does not want you to sleep with a certain someone or get involved in a certain situation. Some couples might want to keep their rendezvous under the wraps and some might be okay with people knowing that they’re in an open relationship. So the ground rules are very important.
In a world where monogamy is slowly dying, open relationships are a good way to make things work and stay in control of your relationship. Do open relationships work out better? I think yes, they do. Sometimes when you get greedy and ask for too much you end up loosing everything! There’s a high probability of loosing what you have with your partner. We sure are accepting the decline of monogamy but it’s too soon to expect our society to accept polygamy. Also it doesn’t always work. If my husband gets emotionally attached to someone else, gives my share of love, attention and care to some other woman, it’s infidelity for me. Ankita Mittal, a 32-year-old real estate developer who has run nine full marathons in Mumbai, Paris, NYC, London and Boston, begins her training four to five months before the big day. However, Dr Kapadia begins his half-marathon training schedule two months in advance. His fitness regimen already involves running up to 10 km four times a week. “So it isn’t too difficult for me to double up my distance in eight weeks,” he says. “And if I ever do the full, I’ll just train longer.”

You will (temporarily) need to give up, or at least cut down, certain habits like junk food and alcohol. Dr Kapadia remarks, “Marathon training requires commitment. It is like taking on a second (almost) full-time job. I get up at 5 am and begin my run at 5:30. That way, I can finish, shower, eat and get to work by 8:30. This also means I go to bed by 10:30 pm. Sure, it affects my social life, but that is a sacrifice I am willing to make, on occasion.”

This is an objective observation more pronounced in India. Examples are plenty, where a woman tries to work in what might be a man's sphere. Although she is efficient and educated- the male mind is still regressive. Even in 'her' sphere - the home, the man can be authoritarian with no impunity
of being called a nag. That tag exclusively belongs to the woman. Bad enough as this is, we have so many women taking the strange stance of reinforcing male prejudices about men that they are uncomplicated. A woman once said to me in sweeping judgement -"I never read women authors, they have
such a petty universe compared to a male author!" (Indeed that's why an acknowledged writer took on the pseudonym of a male name-George Elliot) Folks, it’s time to wake up and smell the coffee! Yes some sections of open-minded society acknowledge women as equal as men, but the sad truth is, women have to assert this as much as other marginalised groups who have to fight for their place in the same sunracism, casteism, and allied "isms". And where can this be best addressed? At home, in schools that have an enlightened faculty, in political memoranda, and most definitely in the mindsets of the women who want to win brownie-points with boys. Precious relationships with women need to be celebrated and appreciated genuienly. Before that women need to celebrate women more than denigrate them. You will be surprised how long a little appreciation goes in a relationship. Women Don’t Often Appreciate Other Women When a woman is able to appreciate another woman, it speaks of self-assurance and inner worth. No one is too big, too great or too famous to receive appreciation and genuine heartfelt acclaim and be part of their success. You can encourage and bring out the best in your friend. This is about honestly sincerely spreading happiness for yourself and the people you interact with. It takes self-confidence and self-assurance to give praise and receive it. Time Magazine's secrets to happiness has sharing, giving compliments and philanthropy as a top runner- not possessionsdresses-friends- handbags (contrary to popular opinion) so get out there and do something to make someone happy or throw yourself into a cause that drives your heart. Or many causes that set your heart on fire. I’d highly recommend that instead of eating into physical space with material belongings be generous for the sake of yourself. And allow others to be generous with you- it's good for the health of their hearts too. Give and take is the formation of a bond and a long term relationship. A healthy relationship is based on reciprocity and give and take – where positive affirmations grow and nurture your relationships as opposed to pulling each other down.

The British series traces the life of Queen Victoria from her early ascension to the throne, her courtship days and how she married Prince Albert. Staring Jenna Coleman as Queen Victoria and Tom Huges as Prince Albert, the series is both captivating and historically up to date with facts.

THE NIGHT OF
The eight part miniseries revolves around the trial of a PakistaniAmerican who woke up to find he was a suspect in the murder of a woman he partied with just the night before. The series explored the sordid details of the life of an undertrial . It also highlights the delicate relationship between the accused’s family and the future.
When Ginny Baker’s lifelong dream of being a pitcher in a Major League team, her life takes a turn. Playing professional baseball, her career is challenged because of her gender which becomes a bigger problem than she had anticipated.

THE CROWN
Based on The Audience- an award winning play, The Crown, a Netflix-original drama takes viewers through the life of Queen Elizabeth II right from the 1940s till date. The series starts with her ascending the throne and travels through the decades, personal intrigues, various political rivalries, romance and other parts of her life.
The comedy drama has been adapted from the comic book series The Sandman who later became the protagonist of the spin off Lucifer. Bored of life, Lucifer moves to Los Angeles with an aim to work for humanity. He eventually goes on to become a very just LAPD consultant.

Another Youtuber, who created a mashup between two unlikely mashable songs, closer by The Chainsmokers and ‘Kabira’ by Pritam. The song is a cover sang by the youtuber Vidya Vox and Casey Breves who is featuring in the video. Although the two song are completely different they develop into a really beautiful song!
KAPOOR AND SONS MASHUP
This again has been created by DJ Chetas. This mashup has ensured that the slow paced songs like ‘Bol na’ find their space mid way through the song and before you fall into the romantic reverie of the love story it is quick to be replaced by the peppy ‘Kar Gayi Chull.'

SATTA (2003)
This movie starring Raveena Tandon, Atul Kulkarni and Govind Namdeo is a portrait of the nexus between the underworld, businessmen, policemen and politicians. The movie also showed the bigotry of the Indian mindset and how women were used according to the whims of the men.
Based on the term coined by Mahatma Gandhi, it stars Amitabh Bachchan, Kareena Kapoor, Ajay Devgan. Bachchan portrays the role of Dwarka Anand, a man who believes in truth and welfare of society. He decides to construct a regional party with his son to eliminate corruption.
RAAJNEETI (2010)
Staring Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Ajay Devgan, it is directed and produced by Prakash Jha. It draws parallels to the epic Mahabharata where it shows different shades of Krishna, Arjun, Bheem, Duryodhan, and Karna. A sequel will show Katrina Kaif as a powerful politician.
GULAAL (2009) One of Anuraag Kashyap`s best, Gulaal was delayed by over 3 years due to various reasons. It was a story of the struggle for power, it showed a gritty underbelly of student politics and secessionist politics in Rajasthan. The film featured Kay Kay Menon in one of his most powerful roles.
Best of TV / Music / Movies / Books Puja Chagoiwala talks about her book The Front Page Murders and the inspiration Of all the cases you have reported, what made Palande’s case stand out, to an extent that you based your book on it? It was the sheer amount of blood at the hands of this one person and his cronies. Everyday, while we were covering the story in 2012, worked loose a new gory detail. And it prompted me to delve deeper into what drove the instinct to kill. Plus, there was the fact that this man was an alleged serial killer, but wasn’t a psycho. To me, until then, serial killers were those demented men living in far-away hinterlands.
But Palande was a serial killer who was educated, lived in a posh apartment, and attended glitzy showbiz parties. What is your take on media trials? I think the larger question here is accountability in reportage. If we take care of this basic rule of journalism, press coverage would never become media trials. I’m not averse to journalists digging out details when it comes to
cases of public impact and importance. But I’m certainly opposed to voyeuristic preying. Do you have any message for your readers? Well, during my years in crime reporting, the one common pattern I’d noticed was that victims of heinous crimes, had never anticipated those assaults, and hence, had never been precautious. So stay alert, and stay safe.

We loved the whiskey based Manhattan Dry as well as their Bailey Banana Colada which was a mix of baileys, banana and chocolate. The menu is North Indian and Mediterranean. We picked the Chana Chatpata which we couldn’t stop raving about. We loved the Chicken and Cheese Pita Burgers with spicy kheema and cheese. The Chicken Choosa Kebabs stuffed with cheese are a good option along with the Mutton Kheema Pao Sliders and Chicken Tikka Sandwiches. Thyme focuses on healthy eating and has an interesting range of non alcoholic Kale shots and the refreshing Spiriluna Exilir and salads. Werecommend the Chocolate Sundae- brownie, vanilla and chocolate ice-cream, chocolate sauce and toasted marshmallows. FAB OR DRAB: With plenty of options, the restaurant has something for everyone. OUT OF THE BLUE CUISINE: European BITES AND BOOZE: Out Of The Blue has cozy interiors, and soft lighting. Their Smoked Chicken Cheese Balls are the perfect combination of cheese and chicken. We also loved the Bianco Pizza with feta cheese, artichokes, mozzarella and rocket leaves, although more feta cheese would be nice. We sipped on a Fruit of the Forest, a refreshing, fruity cocktail made with raspberries, strawberries, blueberries and vodka. Another good offering is the Mai Tai- a potent cocktail of rum, cointreau and pineapple juice. For mains we had the Seared Chicken which was cooked perfectly and served with a creamy mash potato and vegetables. We loved the Pulled Lamb Ragu along with gnocchi and seasonal vegetables. Their Chocolate Fondant oozed molten chocolate and the Vanilla Panacotta too deserves a mention for being full of flavour. KOYLA CUISINE: North Indian, Mughlai BITES AND BOOZE: With a revamped menu at the Versova outlet of the Koyla, we had to try it for ourselves. Starting from the interior impression of the place, it is done tastefully in a red and silver color scheme. We are raving about the Nawabi Mushroom Tikka which with its cheesy and perfectly spiced flavours could easily beat the other starters. The Sizzling Tandoori Prawns Platter was another delight, given the tenderness and juicy flavours. Going to the mains, the Paneer Lazeez with generous amounts of cashewnuts and fresh paneer cubes is a great option for vegetarians. However, the best among the mains is the Rogan Josh, a delicacy crafted with delicate texture and aroma which will win you over. We ended with Fresh Rabdi which was a delightful concoction of thickness and sweetness in the perfect measure, something we would definitely head back for! GRAFFITI PLANE CARRYING BRAZILIAN FOOTBALL TEAM CRASHES
A plan carrying Brazilian football team Chapeconese crashed in Columbia. In total 72 passengers were declared dead. The team were on their way to Medellin from Bolivia to play the Copa Sudamerica finals against Atletico Nacional. Evacuation operations swung into place, but there were only six survivors. Reports state that the crash was due to low fuel. The irony is that was meant to be a time of celebrations for Chapeconese is now a time of mourning.
FIDEL CASTRO PASSES AWAY
Revolutionary Cuban leader Fidel Castro recently passed away at the age of 90. Castro was one of the world’s most controversial, yet well known leaders. Despite several assassination attempts from the United States, he survived, only to end his journey after a long battle with illness. Following his demise, condolences poured in from world leaders including Vladimir Putin, François Hollande, Jacob Zuma and Pope Francis.
JACKIE CHAN WINS HONORARY OSCAR
After 56 years in the industry and over 200 films actor Jackie Chan has been awarded with an honorary Oscar. The 62 year old star was presented with the honour at the Eighth Annual Governors Awards which were held at the Hollywood and Highland Center in Los Angeles. While accepting the award, Chan called it a dream. He also spoke about how he used to watch the Oscars as a child with his parents.

Almost everyone in India was shocked when leading television journalist Arnab Goswami announced his resignation as Editor-in-Chief at Times Now. While announcing his resignation, he repeatedly said that the game has just begun and independent media is going to thrive.
