herever we go, we're constantly surrounded by fascinating buildings, modes of transport that get faster and better, technology that is making every aspect of our otherwise mundane life easier, novel products of cosmetics and prosthetics. It certainly takes a lot more than mere visualisation of a novel idea. Our cover story, Careers In Engineering (Pg28) explores the various engineering courses offered in our country like mechanical, electrical, civil, bio-medical, chemical, IT, computer, aerospace, marine and indistrial. Although, it is an age-old, go-to occupation for most bright minds in India, it is a field that is ever-changing and incessantly growing, with newer concepts and additions in place, in accordance to modern times. If you passed off engineering as a rather mundane profession, which almost everyone seems to be into these days, flip through our story to see why exactly it is so. You might just change your mind and want to give it a shot yourself.

How does one ever choose a career, we always wonder! I remember it being such a challenge to decide what field to pick for my higher education, as there were so many choices, coupled with the towering expectations from parents and peer pressure. Thank heavens, there have been tests devised to make our decisions easier. I have taken a few psychometric tests myself, and the results have helped me tremendously. It shows ones personality type and then helps make career choices easier based on your result. I would recommend everyone to try it, Define Your Personality (Pg42) and get to know a bit more about yourself, and stop trying to fit into a mould that you are not meant for. On a lighter note life should not always be so serious. As they say, you live only once, so live it to the fullest. There are many things one may achieve in life with our goals and aspirations, but there are a few things that you must do before your turn 25. We bring you our top ten recommendations for things to do before your 25th birthday in, The Big 25 (Pg64), so go and start crossing things off your bucket list and have the time of your life.

AAISECTMOOCS.COM LAUNCHED AS INDIA’S LARGEST FREE ONLINE OPEN LEARNING PLATFORM

 In a bid to support the Skill India and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan movements, Aisectmoocs.com has been launched as India’s largest free online open learning platform. This Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) portal, launched by the Bhopal-based education group AISECT, will offer over 2,000 courses including school courses, skill courses and higher education courses.  All courses on Aisectmoocs.com will be free of cost. All 750+ diplomas and certificate level ALISON courses will be offered through the AISECT MOOC portal. Additionally, AISECT will offer courses on school curriculum as well as courses on higher education subjects. Initially, the course curriculum will be available in English and Hindi but more regional language content will be added to the MOOC platform over the next few months.  The duration of the courses range from three hours to six months, and students get an online certificate on successful completion of the course.  Log on to www.aaisectmoocs.com

 Indian Institute of Gems & Jewellery (IIGJ) Mumbai, a project of the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council of India (GJEPC), has come up with a one-ofits-kind 3-year graduate program in Jewellery Design and Manufacturing Techniques, with an introduction to Management studies in collaboration with the Welingkar Institute of Management.  With these courses in the offering, IIGJ will be the first institute in the country to offer a complete graduate course on Gems and Jewellery including Operations Management for the emerging Jewellery Professional and Entrepreneurs. The academic year 2016-17 will be the first year of this course and the admission process is already in progress.  They are 6 semester courses with each semester being 6 months long. The syllabus for these courses includes introduction of jewellery, fundamentals of design, manufacturing and technology, introduction of diamond grading, jewellery designing and merchandising research. Gradually, the syllabus further covers specialization in design, manufacturing and merchandising, personality and skill development, jewellery management, sales and marketing. ONCOURSE CODING BOOT CAMP – LEARNING PYTHON

 From quickly automating tedious office tasks to writing quick python programs to get you through your day, this program is relatively simple to learn, and easier to implement. Other languages such as Java and c++ require many lines of code for the same tasks that Python can do in a shorter form.  This course teaches students the fundamentals of the language Python. The aforementioned dynamic language makes it possible for students to create games and websites, and also scour the web for data.  Through the course, students will develop a sound foundation and understanding of conditional logic, recursion and object-oriented programming.  L’Oréal invites women students who have completed class XII in India to apply for the 13th edition of its ‘For Young Women in Science’ scholarship program. L’Oréal India will award scholarships worth Rs250,000 each to 50 promising but economically disadvantaged young women, to help them complete their graduation in any scientific field in a recognized college or university in India.  The Scholarship is applicable for women who have passed class XII exams from across India in the current academic year (ended March 2016), with a minimum of 85% in PCM/PCB and not over 19 years of age as on 31st May 2016, are eligible to apply for this scholarship.  This scholarship is open for study in any field of science: medicine, engineering, information technology, pharmacy, biotechnology, and other graduate courses pertaining to science (B.Sc). Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by an eminent jury of scientists and academicians. oing to study at a place far from your homeland is not always easy, but it can be rather exciting since it offers you opportunities for your career. With the inception of globalization, the importance of higher education has increased dramatically and is quite market-driven. The rapid rise of international education has led many students from across the world to opt for higher courses, as they offer you more productivity and exposure. We all know someone within our circle who have travelled overseas for further studies, for instance to countries such as the United States, Britain, Germany and France. But it seems like more of a trend these days, isn’t it? Especially the US, as the place itself is alluring and luxurious. More than providing an education, it teaches you the nuances of life, with the exuberant nature of the place you are surrounded by. We know it’s tempting, but the hustle and bustle one will experience is invaluable. Forget overseas, the amount of students migrating within India is mindboggling. A chunk of Indian students

are migrating from their native land to other places within India to ensure that they get into the institute of their choice. A recent paper on Internal Migration for Education and Employment among Youth in India, commissioned by UN-HABITAT's Global Urban Youth Research Network, has shed light on the new migration trend. In the past, over 70 percent of young adults have moved for matrimony purposes, 10 percent to secure better employment opportunities and 3.5 percent for educational reasons, proving that a discouraging academic landscape near home is no longer keeping its youth from travelling to brighter lights elsewhere. Obviously, one wouldn’t want to pursue the same course from a university which is not highly-rated. Today, where jobs are not available with a satisfactory income, most students prefer migrating to different states rather than abroad because of several reasons, financial constraints being one of them. Well, at the end of the day, what matters (most) is the market value of your preferred course and the university.

Moving to a different state or city has become cliché. Nowadays, people are aware of the whereabouts of different cities, their culture, tradition, and lifestyle beforehand. Without a shadow of doubt, there are a lot of hassles faced by the students, from linguistic barrier to caste discrimination, but then there’s a price to pay for everything and a lot more to learn. The influx of students migrating from Tier II cities (Indore, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Ahmadabad etc.) to Tier I (Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata and Bangalore) will continue for years to come, adding weight to this migration trajectory. To be honest, this issue can only be explained in an informative manner. So, let’s get into the details of it.

Migration Patterns in India There are four migration streams – rural-rural, ruralurban, urban-rural and urban-urban. Further, the stream can be intra-district, intrastate and interstate. Usually, the migrants move within the state, i.e. move within same districts or move to other districts of the same state. This is particularly true in the case of the rural-rural migration stream. There is no apparent difference in the proportion of male and female migrants in the age group 15-32 years. Of the 110 million individuals aged 15-32 years, over 70 percent of them, i.e. 77.5 million, report moving on account of marriage.

Migration for the purpose of Education India is not yet a 100 percent literate country. States like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Orissa, which have a large concentration of poor, have historically had higher levels of fertility and low levels of literacy. These states also account for a large proportion of India’s population. Given that access to quality primary and secondary schools in these states is a problem, it is not surprising that these states also have a shortage of institutes of higher learning. Only 17 percent of migration on account of education is inter-state in nature, while 45 percent of migration is across districts of the same state. This is understandable, since within each state there are cities with institutes of higher learning. “The most important states from the perspective of migration for education are Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, West Bengal and Rajasthan. Of these states, Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka are the main destinations (i.e. attracting migrants from other states), whereas Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Rajasthan are the main source states of migrants”, said author S Chandrasekhar, professor at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research. In the context of balanced regional development in India, the issue of human capital flows across the country becomes important. Which are the states that gain by attracting more educated migrants? We can glean insights by examining the distribution of educational attainment of interstate migrants across Indian states.

What is ‘Brain Drain’? Brian Drain refers to the situation when highly qualified and trained people leave a country to permanently settle in some other country. It is also referred to as human capital flight. Highly educated professional

people immigrate to other advanced countries for better opportunities and a comfortable lifestyle. The problem of brain-drain, in our age, has become very elusive. The developing countries like India are desperately in need of talents, especially in the field of science and technology, but for several reasons the talents are fleeing their countries, leaving their native lands impoverished in the process. Thus brain drain is a direct loss of trained experts in underdeveloped and poor countries. On the other hand, it is a net gain to the advanced countries. The underdeveloped countries are spending millions on the training of these experts. But the advanced countries are utilizing their services without spending any money on their training. Every year, thousands of highly talented doctors, engineers, scientists and other intellectuals leave India and migrate to foreign countries. They generally go overseas for monetary gains and facilities for higher research. The US is the biggest gainer from the loss of India due to brain drain. A large number of Indians are teaching at various US Universities and other institutions of higher learning. In foreign countries, there is the advantage that while learning, a person can also earn his own living. The stipends in foreign countries are sufficient enough. A frugal Indian student living there can also save something to send home. These technical reasons and the pool of talent that we lose every year, can greatly help in the development of our natural resources. In this connection, people should also come forward and cooperate with the government in solving this problem. A lot of hue and cry is raised about our higher education institutes not figuring in global ranking. The reason is not a lack of high quality research work, but the fact that in India, a large section of research work is done in vernacular languages, whereas global rankings only consider research in the English language. Our nation is spending huge amounts of money on their training. Today thousands of young Indian scientists and technicians are devoted to the cause of rebuilding our nation. The country has already achieved nuclear status as well as become a space power.

Brain Drain V/S Brain Gain Migration can benefit both the ‘sending’ and the ‘receiving’ country. There’s a possibility that brain drain may be converted into 'brain gain', something particularly relevant to India. Until recently, the role of the overseas Indian community in the development of India concerned only financial resources. In addition to the financial advantage, Indian expatriates abroad, especially well qualified expatriates bring other benefits such as image improvement for the country, knowledge transfers, and access to new markets, business networks. There is no doubt that India possesses vast natural and man power resources. If both these resources are put to their maximum utilization, astounding advancement can be achieved in all fields. There are enough opportunities for all Indians who have settled abroad, if they come back to India. They should play an important role in the future progress of our country and share the responsibility of participating in this essential task, as well as they should introduce digital learning tools which would further discourage migration. yi

aina Jaiswal, a table tennis player of National level credit, is the youngest Asian to have passed her 10th grade board examinations at the mere age of just 8, in the year 2008. In the year 2009, she cleared her class 11th exams, from the Andhra Pradesh board examination, at the age of 9 years. In the year of 2010, she cleared her 12th class from the Andhra Pradesh board examination. She also graduated from Osmania University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communication at the age of 14 years and become youngest graduate in India in journalism. Presently she is doing her post graduation final year at the age of 16 years. If all this doesn't convince you of supreme intellectual capability, we don't know what will. But, if you think she's just about the academics, we'd have you know that she likes to indulge in a few hobbies every nore and then. After regular practice in her free time, Naina managed to record the Ramayana Slokas at the age of 7. She is also an efficient piano player and singer. She is ambidextrous, and operates CS2, Corel Draw and Photoshop effortlessly. We talk to her about how she manages to do so many things in so little time. 1) You passed your 10th grade board exams at the mere age of 8. What made you choose to pass your schooling years so quickly? Till the age of 5, I was allowed to have as much playtime as I needed. Post that age, my mother inculcated in me, a thirst for knowledge and academics. At the age of 6, I started studying the basics of Hindi as a language. Later, I started reading the Bhagwat Geeta. At the age of 7, I started studying provincial Telugu for six months and during the second half of the year, I started learning English. At the age of 8, I was made to study basic Science and Maths. My father, who worked as an educator made learning more easier for me through memory practice and handwriting skills. He always asked me to be aware of the subject and reproduce with my own language. I studied education as a passion, and not under pressure. 2) How difficult or easy was it for you to cope with the 10th grade syllabus at the age of just 8? As I could exercise control over languages and basics in math's as well as science, I was able to do a lot more with mere concentration. 3) At 13, you were also the youngest graduate in journalism in India. Considering that you have a solid background in Table Tennis, why did you decide to take up journalism? In journalism, I have the option of studying political science, which will be useful for when I will write my Civil Services exams. I studied this subject in 11th and

12th grade, so during graduation I took up journalism and even presently I am studying post graduation in political science. Journalism has also helped in developing my phonetics and English. 4) Did you have a lot of educational help and support during your exams? How did you prepare yourself during your final exams? Education and sports, as well as music can be done with only regular practice and respect for the teacher. This is only the secret to get better in the final examinations. 5) How did you manage studies and table tennis at the same time? When you do it with passion, you can manage easily. My father inculcated sports, education and music as my passion. He made my learning process more inventive and initiated it step by step. 6) With a No.1 national Table Tennis ranking in the under-15 category being just one of your many achievements, did you face any challenges while on your way to the top? I face challenges on a day-to-day basis, and fighting against those challenges has made me stronger. I am a fighter and challenges don't scare me. 7) Tell us a little about the toughest table tennis game of your life. Who did you play against? I never feel any game is the toughest because every time I play, I enjoy the game. But, there was a very significant match I played with the World Number 2 champion, Chines Taipi in Hong Kong, where I lost 2-3. 8) Tell us about your other hobbies, apart from Table Tennis. I cook Hyderabadi Biryani in just under 25 minutes, and I like to play the piano and sing as well. I am ambidextrous and I can type the alphabets in just 2 second. I have verbalized the 108 slokas of the Ramayana, and presently I am verbally memorizing the Bhagwad Geeta. These are my hobbies.

You are born into a certain religion and social status and the same dictates a lot about how you are going to live your life — what type of education you will receive, how people will react to you; it even determines how you will grow throughout your life. We dig into how religion and the social status in India leads to the much talked about radicalization and what can be done about it.

Centuries ago when the kings sat on thrones, the caste system was prevalent. You had the Brahmins, the Kshatriyas (warriors), the Vaishyas (traders) and the Shudras. As you would have guessed, the Shudras were the lowest caste and were subject to a lot of atrocities — firstly, they weren't allowed to draw water from the well that the rest of the people used and sometimes, people even went to the extent of throwing feces in their wells! Sounds harsh? It gets worse. However, this is a story for another day. If you assume that this situation was only a part of the Hindu culture, you are wrong. Caste systems are prevalent in more or less every religion in our country and, as we have already ready to sit discussed, this affects several things.

Switching between jobs, especially ones that are at two ends of a spectrum can’t be easy. Anvi Mehta has a few handy tips for one of the biggest life changes you will ever make

hanging trends and interests have resulted in severe migration of jobs and careers among the youth. People do not want to stick to the same job as their qualification, if it does not interest them any longer. A good change, but a little precaution is needed nonetheless. A few years ago, when the field of IT was growing at an unprecedented rate, working for a multinational company (MNC) was a dream for a lot of aspiring engineering students. At that time, a dear friend, who handled a job with a 5 lakh per annum salary package, decided to quit

and take up travel blogging for a magazine. When he made the decision to switch to a completely different job, the question that he was frequently asked was “Are you sure this is the right decision to make?”. But he was quite clear about his choice. It is then that it struck me that he was not the only one. In recent years, a large percentage of youth has been seen switching to completely different careers from what they are qualified, for a host of reasons – be it money or interest. Professionals today are setting out to start their own ventures, engineers and doctors are quitting their well-paying jobs to publish

books and science students are turning to acting or drama. However, is it easy working in a field in which you have no previous theoretical knowledge or formal education? Definitely not. When it comes to switching jobs, there is a certain amount of uncertainty that surrounds your future. But, pursuing a job that grabs your interest and holds it, is definitely worth taking the risk for. Nonetheless, there are a few things you should keep in mind. It is important to take things in a slow and organized manner. Which is why you should consider the following tips to make switching jobs an easier process.

Take a formal course of degree in the field you are switching to No matter how bad you want to start a business of your own or change your job profile, it is always advisable to get a formal training or at the very least, a course done for the same. If you wish to pursue a career in interior designing, it’s best to at least take up a diploma course in Interior Designing. This will help you understand the basics of designing, the technical terms that interior designers use and the small knacks of the profession. Look for a diploma course, if not a full time class, but make sure you know the technical details of what you plan on getting into.

Be sure of your choices The thumb rule to follow when changing careers is that you need to be sure of what you are choosing. Evaluate whether or not your interest in a different career is genuine or a passing phase, and analyse whether or not, it is the right time in your life to make a career switch. If you are even the slightest bit doubtful, make sure you rethink your decision, sleep over it and then draw a conclusion. The key is to not make a hurried decision.

Be prepared to answer questions “But why did you change your career?” – This is one question which you will face everywhere and from almost anyone and everyone, be it at a job interview or your friends and family members. You will have to convince several people about why switching your career is a good idea. However well thought your decision is, you will be questioned and you will need an answer that not only convinces your friends, family and your interviewer, but also yourself. So, if you're not sure and confident about your decision, the uncertainty and lack of confidence will probably make you rethink whether or not you're doing the right thing.

Be financially stable This tip is especially for those who want to follow their passion for writing or photography or any other job which really isn't as thriving as other well-paying jobs. Yes, following your passions and doing what you want to sounds really convincing when you have to advice someone, but as a matter of fact, it can be tricky and heavy on your pockets. It is always good to have a backup finance for at least 3 months, for your daily and basic expenses. This should be a paramount priority, especially if the job you want to pursue doesn’t really pay that well. Plan your finances ahead of leaving your job and save enough money so you need not borrow or ask for any from your family and friends. self-report questionnaire designed to indicate psychological preferences in how people perceive the world. It is based on the typological theory proposed by Carl Jung, who had speculated that there are four principal psychological functions by which humans experience the world – sensation, intuition, feeling, and thinking – and that one of

differences into four opposite pairs, or "dichotomies", with a resulting 16 possible psychological types. None of these types are "better" or "worse"; however, Briggs and Myers theorized that people innately prefer one overall combination of type differences. In the same way that writing with the left hand is difficult for a right-hander, people tend to find using their opposite psychological preferences more difficult, even though they can become more proficient (and therefore behaviorally flexible) with practice and development. Using psychometric techniques, such as item response theory, the MBTI is scored and attempts to identify the preference, and clarity of preference, in each dichotomy. After taking the MBTI, participants are usually asked to complete a 'Best Fit' exercise and are then given a readout of their Reported Type, which usually includes a bar graph and a number (Preference Clarity Index, or PCI) to show how clear they were about each preference when they completed the questionnaire. The beauty of these tests is how they are presented – try and picture your personality reflected on a set of papers. The MBTI and Strong test results are segregated into six separate sections and if read intently and methodically, the results will tactfully link your character traits, likes, and dislikes to an array of career options. And around this time, starting afresh almost always involves leaving behind your school friends, who you have known for years, to make new ones in college and the starting of a whole new year in higher education. While the intellectually gifted and socially extroverted will have no qualms about fitting in, the rest of us might just be ruing one of the biggest transitions of our lives. And so, to make it easier for you, we have a few do’s and don’ts, that might just help you get through your first day at college with fewer pitfalls. Wear your best outfit. You don’t have to be dressed to the nines, but it always helps to look well turned out. Make sure to look neat and prim, but avoid going overboard with small aspects of your overall look like your perfume or your makeup. You want to appear friendly, without looking like you’re trying too hard.

Polish up your social skills. Most people are apprehensive about approaching people on the first day of class. And so, here’s a neat trick – approach the ones that alone. It’s easier to talk to someone when they’re alone rather than talking to a whole group of people, and it will help them open up better.

Be late. Being early to your first class will allow you to have some breathing space, and will give you time to mentally prepare you for your first day of coursework. You don’t want to be late to class, only to be told off for being late.

DAY OF THE DEAD Popularly known as Dia de los Muertos, this festival is celebrated throughout Mexico, as well as in other countries, which have their own versions of honoring the dead. While the name may give the impression that it’s a day of mourning, it is a joyous time of celebration and also marks Mexico’s most important holiday, meaning they invest all of their time and money to make it as memorable as it can get. The Day of the Dead is celebrated in homes, where people create altars to honors their deceased loved ones. They also visit the graveyard and decorate the place with flowers, photos, candles, food and drinks. Sometimes they even stay up all night at the graveyard, socializing and recounting funny stories. On a public level, the people engage in street parties, parades and festivals on university campuses. The significance of this festival is that the dead are allowed to live again. It is an age old belief that during this time, the deceased return to their earthly homes to visit and rejoice with their loved ones. Although most people celebrate this day out of love and commitment to their beloved, some others have a very different reason to do so. Mexico is rampant with folk tales that speak of spirits returning to find no altar built for them or meager offerings left by and get angry or sad. They then seek vengeance on those who have forgotten them. As you see, there is mixed emotion among these people, some superstitious while others mere love.

MONKEY BUFFET FESTIVAL Wait, before you get me wrong, let me tell you that this isn’t a buffet serving monkeys. It’s a buffet for the monkeys of Thailand. Ha! Those lucky chaps. Set in the province of Lopburi, which is North of Bangkok, the Monkey Buffet Festival is held for the benefit of monkeys. 4000 kilograms of fruits, vegetables, candies and cake are set down in front of temples, either in a pyramid or on a mat. This festival was invented in 1989 by a local businessman with the intention of boosting tourism in the province. It was a successful attempt as thousands of visitors began pouring in to watch 3000 monkeys eating till their heart’s content. The macaque monkey population in Lopburi is so large, it would be considered as a pest in any other part of the world. But in this province, they are revered as they are thought to be the descendants of a monkey warrior and are believed to bring good fortune. The Monkey Buffet Festival also hosts plenty of activities in relation with monkeys. Music is played and young people dress up in monkey costumes. Monkey sculptures are also constructed all over the area.

BABY JUMPING FESTIVAL Although Spain boasts of some of the most unusual and bizarre festivals compared to the rest of the world,

throwing tomatoes over each other as they do in Valencia or being chased down the street by a herd of bulls in Pamplona does not come close to the excitement aroused by the Baby Jumping Festival held each year in Castillo de Murcia near Burgos. Any family with a newborn addition can bring their baby to this festival which is known as the El Colacho. This festival dates back to the 1620’s. The babies are laid on the ground, wrapped in swaddling clothes. Grown, adult men, dressed up as devils, jump over the infants. Once the tiny sinners have been jumped over, they are considered absolved of man’s original transgression. They are then sprinkled with rose petals before being taken away by their much relieved parents. Anyone who is not blessed with receiving this protection as a child and continues to live their life looking over their shoulder, waiting for bad things to happen to them or illness to strike, can participate in an exercise of jumping through fire on the 21st of December. This is meant to protect them from illness. While there haven’t been reports of injuries caused by the flying devils, this strange practice is frowned upon by the clergy of the Catholic Church. However, this festival continues to take place every year. Old habits die hard, or if I may add, old sins.

KANAMARA MATSURI The festival of the Iron Phallus marks the joyous celebration of the Japanese joystick. Despite the smirks from the Westerners, this fest is anything but fantasy related. On the contrary, it’s an ancient tradition that serves as a celebration and prayer for long, happy marriages, fertility and healthy births. Through the festivities, it also promotes awareness about sexually transmitted diseases. The story dates back to the 1600s when local prostitutes would congregate at the Kanamara Shrine and pray for protection against diseases. Another tale speaks of the ‘vagina dentata’ or the toothed vagina, which supposedly castrated several poor young men on their wedding nights. The woman who was cursed with the toothed vagina, which is believed to be a metaphor for syphilis which was rampant in those times, went to see a blacksmith who forged an iron dildo for her in order to break the teeth or her inner demon, thus protecting the penis of her future suitor. While this festival has a much deeper meaning, you cannot ignore that it’s a penis festival and if that’s what you came for, then you won’t be disappointed. The streets are filled with penis hats, penis puppets, penis floats and costumes. It is quite evident that no one shies away from sex or sex organs. Both men and women dress in women’s kimonos, it’s not uncommon to see grandmothers licking penis shaped lollipops. The Saturday prior to the festival, rice treats in the shape of the yin and yang are grilled for everyone to eat. Yin represents the traditional analog of female energy, while

After a short ceremony, dried sardines and Japanese sake are served for good fortune and at noon time, the omikoshi, a giant pink penis altar is carried toward the Kanamara shrine just before the parade sets off.

CHEESE ROLLING FESTIVAL AND NIGHT OF RADISHES According to the website, this festival is deceptively simple. An 11 pound wheel of cheese is rolled down a hill and everyone chases it, slipping, tripping and tumbling on the way down. Ofcourse, that’s not the only the fun part. The entire festival includes family activities, games, tastings and lots of fun ways for you and your

family to enjoy cheese. The Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake is an annual event held on the Spring Bank Holiday at Cooper's Hill near Gloucester in England. It is traditionally done by and for the people who live in the local village of Brockworth, but now people from all over the world take part. The Guardian called it a "world-famous event", and indeed, in 2013, a 27-year-old American man and a 39-year-old Japanese man each won one of the four races. Speaking of fests involving food, one of the most colorful and unique festivals of Mexico, commonly referred to as ‘Noche de Rabanos’. This Radish Night festival lasts only a few hours due to the limited lifespan of vegetables as folk art. The farmers carve the radishes into imaginative shapes with the intention of luring the people into buying the produce at the market. Some

of these radishes are 50cms in length. There are scores of eager viewers and judges who declare the winners. Dozens of booths display carvings that portray animals, saints, dancers, even the Virgin Mary! Trust these guys to run their imagination.

BORYEONG MUD FESTIVAL This festival is indeed like no other. It is South Korea’s largest mud and music festival, which is celebrated every summer, usually around the month of July. It is held at Daecheon beach in the heart of the city. This festival runs for about two weeks and the number of visitors recorded to have visited is a staggering two million. In 1996, various cosmetic products were made using mud which came from the mud flats of Boryeong. These

atmosphere and the mineral rich skin treatment that accompanies is makes the festival even better.

BURNING MAN As the founding legend is told, in the year 1986, Larry Harvey and a dozen friends burned an effigy of a man on San Francisco’s Baker Beach in a cathartic act of spontaneous creativity. This reconciliatory experience and the sense of rebirth quickly grew into an annual ritual with hundreds of people. This day, 70,000 people gather during the week leading up to Labor Day, transforming one of the least hospitable places on Earth into a temporary village called the Black Rock City. The Burning Man is a celebration of the artistic self expression for those who have an unworldly vision. For the other part, it’s about a night long party, dancing and riding around naked and participating in something known as the Slut Olympics. Let’s not go there. This festival is also about discovery, so it’s fitting that approximately a third of attendees each year are first timers. There are also 2000 free classes, workshops and events offered each year during the festival. There’s the elaborately designed temple, which burns in a solemn ceremony after the primal burning of the Man the previous night. Given all this and more, the official website states that the Burning Man isn’t your usual festival. It’s a vibrant participatory metropolis generated by its citizens.

NIGHT OF THE WITCHES

The first ever Mud Festival was celebrated in the year 1998. Today, the Boryeong Mud Festival is becoming more popular with tourists from all over the world coming there to participate as well as the locals. During the festival, there are other multiple attractions assembled around the beach. Some of them are mud slides, mud pools and mud prisons. Competitions such as mud wrestling and the mud king contest are also held. Body painting with the use of dyed mud is also offered. Live performances and musical presentations are also held as part of the fest. To signify the closure of the festival, a magnificent fire display takes place. This is one of the most awaited events in Korea. The great

If witches and wizards have a spiritual home it may well be the Mexican town of Catemaco, a pretty place on the shore of Laguna Catemaco which is considered to be the centre of Mexico’s witchcraft and witch doctor industry. These witchcraft traditions go back centuries, mixing ancient indigenous beliefs, Spanish medieval traditions and voodoo practices. The idea stayed on and every year hundreds of shamans, witches and healers from all over Mexico arrive at Catemaco to perform a mass cleansing ceremony. This is done to rid them of the previous year’s negative energy. Floods of visitors head into the town looking to get hold of a shamanic consultation as well as to eat, drink and be merry. This festival is coupled with song and dance performances and it wouldn’t be complete without stalls selling various amulets. The streets are crowded with vendors selling trinkets, magical potions and healings. You’ll see the regular spiritualists and sorcerers hanging out in the nooks and crannies. Here, you’ll find various shaman tents set up and a believer can see all manner of practices. According to various reports, it is more of “Bewitched” than “The Blair Witch Project”, thus attracting tourists from all over the world. The festival officially called ‘Noche de Brujas’, starts on the first Thursday night in the month of March and carries on through the weekend. yi

POST MARRIAGE SYNDROMES You have invested three years into the journey of matrimony, and all your kith and kin now begin to rub the ‘baby song’ in. Planning your family has been a priority, but the incessant pressure overwhelms you! Suddenly your bucket list priority takes over everything, even the family, and the husband! Having a baby isn’t as taking a walk in the park. Especially in India, where even the modern corporate-bound woman is pinned down to the arrange marriage system, it always takes time to understand the partner and the family. The impending insecurities won't be weaning off any time soon! Having a child is indeed a life-changing experience! Women are suddenly becoming victims to the vicissitudes of an array of physiological and psychological changes. While the world outside is experiencing stupendous bouts of joy, there is an active volcano erupting from within you. So what are the changes one experiences when they discover they are having a child?

THE LOUSY TRIMESTERS Pregnancy may kick in with a mild headache and unexplained fatigue.You may not know what is happening then. All this will be followed by unannounced bouts of nausea and stomach queasiness. You may also wake up feeling exhausted in the morning (but that doesn’t really mean that good news is always around the corner. Stress also plays its part here. Remember the days when we spent nights up, cramming for the most important exam, and we woke up feeling like absolute muddleheads). So, hold your horses and take the test first thing in the morning. Home pregnancy kits are readily available, and they are indeed easy to use. The general process includes using the dropper to accumulate a few drops of urine and drop a few of the same on to the stick provided. A double line indicates that the test is positive, and a single line indicates a negative result. But do repeat the test after a few days, as the hCG hormone could take a few days to activate. The home pregnancy tests report 96% accuracy. A blood test will provide for 100% accuracy. The psychological ramifications of learning that you are pregnant are quite different. You may be happy on the outside, but insecurity and confusion get the better of you. A million questions seem to be hurling at you like pots and pans. At such times, your partner’s maturity levels are put to test. It resides upon him to reassure you from time to time. Moral support from your family members will keep you going too. Don’t forget to eat right, sleep right, and think right. Seek direction from the higher power in the way of prayers. Indeed! Prayers radiate a lot of strength! The words, if appropriately pronounced, have a very positive impact on the aura around you. Don’t fail from taking walks and exercising at regular intervals. It is also essential to stay active! Eat in abundance and eat healthy. Fresh salads, and hot soups with a liberal dash of natural colours will

do both the mother and infant a lot of good. Also consider connecting with a counsellor to keep unwarranted fears at bay. Professional help will aid you through all the three trimesters, preparing you for labour. It will also help you keep yourself elevated and stave off any negative thoughts.

THE OTHER STORY While the above saga gives us insight into the plight of a married woman, let us see what a woman goes through if she is pregnant out of wedlock. India is bound by traditions and rituals. However, owing to the amassing global exchanges, the life of an average Indian woman witnesses a tumultuous uproar. She often finds herself in a catch-22, being ruthlessly pulled by the whims of society at one end, and the ways of the new world on the other. While traditions are always reassuring in numerous ways, the ways of the new world are alluring, insightful, more updated and most importantly, more followed, for a hoard of practical reasons. According to statistics, an average Indian girl hits puberty between the age of eleven and thirteen. After this she is tied down by the academic system of delivering the best score, so that she can acquire the best seat in the best college, followed by a good job. She is caught up in the rigmarole of notching the corporate ladder. By the time she has found herself in a deserving position, she is in her mid-thirties. Stress does get the better of her by then. She also learns of her ticking biological needs in the course and runs into sexual encounters out of wedlock. While abortion seems like the best alternative to most unmarried women, some may marry on learning of the pregnancy itself. A few of the braver women take the decision to single handedly raise the child. The onslaught that society metes out to such women is indeed overwhelming; but sadly, the society is bound by norms that are somewhat religiously inclined. The democratic system permits the woman to have a child out of wedlock, but such women are labelled as being careless and of a lesser character. She is shunned for having bought disgrace onto her family's honour. Little does society realise that woman such as these, possess gumption to actually stand up against all norms. To give birth to the child instead of ruthlessly culling its existence from inception itself. Even in the modern world, the existence of a girl child is unwanted, even in some of the higher educated and well-to-do families. While the physical and psychological ramifications of pregnancy can be really scary and daunting, the thought of motherhood gives them enough strength to overcome the pain and raise the child.

BOTTOM LINE As I key off, I realize that one indeed requires courage to raise a child, be it within or out of wedlock. But, what is even more important is to raise the girl child to become strong, and to stand up up for her decisions, and live her life fearlessly and relentlessly. yi

Jaipur, in all its grandeur, isn’t just for the affluent traveler. Shubham Thakur has a few humorous anecdotes, that will help you get by on low-budget travel to Jaipur with just about enough

aipur, as I have always incorrectly believed, was just some six hours away. My perception was severely altered last week; so much so that, it drove me to start writing a blog entry after almost six months. So, it came to me one Friday evening, when I returned to my messy room in an empty hostel, owing to the Holi holidays after the mid-semester exams. One of my friends had left last week to stay at a backpacker’s hostel in Jaipur on my recommendation, and he had sent a text message to express his gratitude. Having stayed at a backpacker’s hostel before in Kochi, which was the first of my many solo trips, I had a great experience, and hence suggested the place to him. Having the whole weekend to spare, I called up my friends Rohan and Atley, who appreciated the idea. Then with the Hostelworld.com website open on my laptop, I went from room to room looking for likely candidates for the trip. I don’t know whether it was my convincing technique learnt through the advertising course I’m doing this semester; or the recurrent images of ‘firangi’ (foreigner) women posted in reviews by travelers that made Gaurav join the pack (he should pray his girlfriend doesn’t read this). So, the four of us were good to go; with the night stay bookings done, and the Batman vs Superman movie tickets bought over Bookmyshow.com, our schedules were pretty much set. The excitement-time graph, if ever plotted, would show an exponential rise with every minute nearing our departure! I had suggested we take the earlymorning bus so that a considerate part of the travel time wouldn’t be as much uncomfortable, owing to the not-so-amazing perpetually forlorn desert landscape. But, Rohan and Atley had a paper collection at 8am in the morning, so it was decided to take the earliest bus post 9am from the bus station. We were now good to go! After some quick phone calls, I managed to get the squad ready by 9am at the Ram Bhavan gate. Somebody had suggested poker, so the chipset was also included in the baggage. I had a feeling that I’d have to compromise on my strict anti-gambling policy for this sojourn. The auto dropped us off to the bus station just in time for a private bus leaving for Jaipur. It was finally happening. The six-hour journey time was bipartitioned into sleeping and chatting. The legroom of the bus was about half as much as a coach-class seat on a low-cost Indian carrier. Still, I shouldn’t be grumpy because the weather God had been especially kind to us, as we witnessed pleasant weather after a week of the scorching Rajasthan summer. True to the conductor’s word, we did reach in exactly six hours; with equally high spirits, but with grumbling bellies and cramped legs. It had been decided on the way that pizzas had to be devoured the moment we reached. A nearby Pizza Hut had been confirmed by Rohan, who had previously visited Jaipur in January for a half-marathon, which he completed in an excellent time of sub-two hours. The 8 minutes walking route ETA by Google maps verified the fact, and the road was full of street hawkers selling every eatable from pooris to parathas, and burgers to bhaturas. I don’t know whether it was the hunger-inciting smell, or the attractive prices ranging from 20-30 rupees a plate that had a greater share in making us walk faster towards our destination.

The dilemma was to dine-in or to get take-away and eat at our hostel. To save on the service charge of 7%, we zeroed upon the take-away option. So my friends enjoyed free Wi-Fi while we waited for the order to be ready, but the Wi-Fi lasted only as long as the gentleman sitting on the corner table had his meal. We cracked jokes and Rohan got his phone recharged using an obsolete currency note I possessed. It was a creepy underground market which seemed to sell stolen/resold mobile phones, not much different from the Palika Bazar of my homecity, New Delhi. With the pizzas packed and stacked, extra oregano sachets bargained for, we set out to find an auto. When we did find one, we started off at once only to reach an intersection where the left turn was the bone of contention between Google maps and the auto-driver. Unfortunately for us and worse for the pizzas, we followed the maps, only to reach a disrupted end due to some pipeline laying work. The auto driver was compensated, and we walked through a narrow street to bypass the disrupted road and took another auto, an open-air one this time! The ride was memorable, as we crossed the famous Hawa Mahal,dodging paan-spits simultaneously. Now following G-maps with extra caution, we reached our destination and bought some coke (cola) to accompany the pizzas. The excitement mushroomed the moment we saw our place: Zostel, after the travel through the polluted and crowded streets. But lost in the excitement, apart from Jayant, all of us forgot our ID proofs. After a brief, but heated argument, the receptionist let us in on the condition that we presented soft copies of our ID proofs. Finally, it was pizza time! I quickly microwave-heated the pizzas for my friends, who arranged the glasses and poured some coke in the mean time. The kitchen was a fully-equipped one, stocked with bread, milk, sauces, cheese spreads, gas stove, and even a coffee vending machine. Following the ‘each bite – half slice’ policy, the 5 medium pizzas, minus Jayant’s rubber Margherita, stood no chance of surviving more than 10 minutes. So much was the aroma, that it drew an Australian twenty-something female backpacker Lise, to join us for a bite. Lise was traveling solo and had come from Agra. Almost everyone who was lodging at Zostel

was a foreigner, exactly as the reviews had suggested. We were so satisfied. Though our movie was at 7:20pm, we couldn’t wait to check out the foosball facility they had for the guests. After that, we left for the movie. Travelling again through the dense traffic, we barely made it there on time. The movie was disappointing, everyone agreed. Jayant’s jokes about Superman being a dog and Batman a mosquito during the show transformed an all-serious movie to a comedy film. More often than not, the people sitting around us shared a laugh too. So the movie was done. Next on our agenda was to find a Dunkin Donuts cafe and score some donuts, as they had a buy-3 get-3 offer for students, but on the condition that one must hold the promo-SMS. So we reach the shop and my phone battery is dead. Running around for a charger did yield results. I was just telling my friends why an android phone is better than an iPhone - the micro USB charger is universally available. My happiness was short-lived, because my phone decided to optimize apps at the donut store at thirty minutes past 11pm. Android users will sympathize with me here. I knew it was time to stop bragging about my ‘wise’ choice to go for an android handset. We had almost given up on donuts when Gaurav recognized one of the people behind the counter- he had come to Pilani during the sports fest with his donut stall! On the condition that the SMS would be WhatsApp’d to him, he let us have the donuts. Rohan and I ran helter-skelter looking for Maggi around the area, covering almost 2km. We succeeded in hustling 6 packets from a paanshop nearby. I offered to take the lead and cooked three packets of fried Maggi. Oh! I can never forget the compliments I received from my friends, as well as the people around. Gaurav suggested I quit my degree of Mechanical engineering and become a housewife. I believe the compliment was genuine, for he didn’t say chef. Then I would know it was flattery, and he simply wanted me to cook the remainder three packets as well, out of laziness. So after playing poker the whole night, we came back the next morning by a Volvo bus that cost almost thrice that of a standard roadways bus. But since we had the last row seats, with almost zero recline, it didn’t make much of a difference, apart from the air conditioning, of course. yi 2016 JUNE YOUTHINCMAG.COM 57

Flying Pizzas In 2014, a Mumbai-based pizza outlet made headlines when it successfully delivered a pizza by a drone, to a customer located 1.5 kilometers away. Their gutsy demeanor didn’t go down well with the local police and the outlet was pulled up and questioned for their aerial antics. My first memory of a drone was watching the Hindi movie 3 Idiots, when a drone with a mounted camera flies up to see (and show) a students' suicide. Since then, drones have fascinated me not only because they possess immense technological capability, but also because they’ve been revered by the military, feared by nations and used in countless areas of life.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Drones were commonly known as UAVs. These drones are remote controlled but can fly on a preset flight path. Drones typically possess onboard GPS software or have the capability to link to one via the internet. Most people would link drones to the military or bombing attacks made by certain countries, however drones can and have been used in traffic surveillance, firefighting, weather analysis, police use and even for photo shoots and music festivals! Drones come in many sizes, ones that can be launched from home to ones that require a runway to take off! Consumer drones (or drones used by civilians like us) are meant for entertainment purposes, photography and so on. Military drones such as the MQ9 Reaper are defense drones that can deliver precision strikes and cause havoc in a given radius.

Military Applications While India’s drone program struggles to reach production and weaponization stages, countries such as USA have managed to use drones extensively for both target surveillance and elimination. Drones were first used in USA under the Bush administration but their use has almost doubled under the Obama administration. Drones are used specifically in areas where manned flight is considered too dangerous and would cause loss of life. In situations like these, unmanned flights take the lead and use sensors, infrared imaging and cameras to gain vital reconnaissance information. Onboard weapon payloads can be controlled from a ground station to ‘strike-out’ a given area. Drones usage has been severely debated upon due to civilian deaths caused by drone strikes, particularly in Pakistan.

Surveillance The primary raison d’etre for drone technology was surveillance, before the world realized that flying in a machine to blow up something was better, cheaper and easier to fly in a human to do the same. New York has explored the use of drone surveillance for everything from a traffic snarl to fires to an actual disaster response. This is primarily because communication systems are the first to be knocked down during a disaster, but drones can beat all that, and can get an aerial view allowing response teams to react quickly and effectively .The most interesting drone surveillance program I’ve seen in recent times is NASA’s air traffic management system. Just like vehicles on the road are governed by regulations, so are aircrafts. The program uses geofencing, a feature used within a GPS program to define a virtual barrier that an aircraft/ human shouldn’t cross. Geofencing with drones can mean accurate barriers and clear flight paths thereby reducing accidents and mishaps in the air, whilst awarding more control to air traffic controllers on ground. 58 YOUTHINCMAG.COM JUNE 2016

emi Moore may have been the initial poster girl for the ‘older woman-younger man’ relationships (Ashton was 27 and Demi was 42), but it ended in a debacle of anger and pain. And yet, does it dissuade conventional families from giving the green signal to their daughters when they decide to marry their young beaus? No, it doesn’t. In fact, I see it as a growing trend all over the world. One-sixth of women in their 50s today are dating men who are in their 30s and 40s. Almost one-third of women between the ages of 40 and 69 are dating younger, more flexible men, who attract them with their sense of adventure, which is often the hallmark of the more spontaneous, youthful man. And, this equation seems to be working quite well so far. Behind the unleashing of cougars in popular culture is, what a growing number of sociologists call, a real demographic shift. In India, I believe young men today prefer older woman considering how the “virginity frenzy” has considerably evaporated. Situations such as this only truly arise when one is not looking for it, especially since the mind has always been programmed along conventional lines of “younger woman-older man”. But then, the forbidden fruit is always tempting. Where once certain behaviour was termed as unacceptable, over time, views have become more liberal and acceptable towards it. But most of all, I think it starts as a casual idea of a thrill or challenge for both sides, untrammelled by the need for commitments or permanency, until things by their own momentum get too deep and intense. The Journal of Couple and Relationship Therapy reports that couples don't care about the age gap. It is only the conservative society that does. It states that men are more strongly drawn to older women because of their sexual expertise and lack of inhibition. After all, the idea of a woman who is sexually knowledgeable and passionate is very attractive to a man who gets more reluctant interactions and conditional sexual access from younger women. Research shows that these women often display formidable sexual prowess and younger men are drawn by the promise of what they offer sexually. What starts with a physical attraction turns into intense chemistry with the appeal of that confident, assured air surrounding older women. She doesn't need constant assurance about how she looks, and definitely does not require you to stroke her ego. Older women tend to

So do these relationships work in the real world? While psycho-analysts do seem to be speaking in favour of this shift, I can vouch for the success of those that I have witnessed. My friend went into it with trepidations, "He is a model, he is so attractive..." seven years down they are happy as ever. Such relationships were observed by Jahangir the Mughal emperor and Cleopatra among several such examples. When I look at it logically, I believe that love cannot analyse the stats. Not to mention, you can go wherever you want, whenever you want and, the exposure to different cultures and people will help broaden your perspective on things.

Make an investment Once you graduate and land a job, spending your hard earned money can be quite liberating. But, the wisest decision and one that you certainly won’t regret would be to invest your money and your savings. Be it stocks, property, education or your first car, invest in something that will help you in the longer run and so, make sure that your decision is a practical one. Considering how unpredictable the economy can be, investment will teach you to put aside money for things other than eating outside and shopping.

Spend time alone Spending time alone is crucial in order to understand yourself better. It also helps to reduce dependency and is a more crucial survival skill than you may think. But, you don’t have to move out of your family home for it. Take up a study program abroad or go on a solo trip by yourself. And once you think you manage on your own, take a step further and move into your own little place.

Get wild! And by that we don’t mean throw a party and turn the place upside down. What we’re talking about is try something that you wouldn’t do otherwise like going bungee jumping, skiing, skydiving or even camping out in the wild. 25 is an age when most people conclude that they need to get serious in life and work towards achieving more practical milestones like a well-paying job and a house. So, if you’re one of them, we’d suggest you have all your fun right now.

Get a makeover Not because there’s anything wrong with your look right now, but if you’re someone who doesn’t really experiment with your looks as much, now is the time to do so. Get that short haircut you’ve always been reluctant to try or buy that outfit you would never be caught dead wearing. For all you know, it’ll be the most drastic thing you will be doing in a long time.

Quit that job The initial years into your twenties are all about graduating and trying to find your calling. And this is usually done alongside jobs that you probably don’t like or pays you peanuts for. And, while turning 25 is all about having your act together, we’d suggest you set out to do things you actually want to do. If you wish to write, start a blog and keep at it. If you wish to donate your time to a cause, volunteer at an NGO. It might not pay you that well, but you can can always pursue it alongside your regular job or until you’ve gathered some foothold.

Fulfill your fitness goals We’re sure that you’re very busy achieving those life goals, but as you grow older, it is essential that you put in as much effort into maintaining your body. If you’re not happy about turning 25, you can at least turn 25 looking your healthiest best. And so, set some fitness goals by reconsidering your diet and trying on fun new workouts to stay in shape. Rest assured, this is one decision you won’t regret even when you turn 50!

Adopt a pet Most of us choose to live with our parents because we think we cannot take care of ourselves. And so, we have the perfect solution for this problem – adopt a pet! It could be a puppy, a cat or even a tiny little turtle. The point is that it serves as an exercise in caregiving. If you can learn to take care of a pet (which is no cakewalk, we’d like to assure you), then you can sure as hell learn to take care of yourself.

Go on a sabbatical If you’re like most 20-somethings, we’re almost certain that you’ve not had a decent break since you’ve started working. And so, it’s essential that you go on a healthy sabbatical to reconsider your decisions and your future plans, or simply to catch up with yourself. It could involve a vacation, or you could make the most of it to just get some sleep or pursue a hobby. The point is take a breather from your mundane working life.

Go 30! And by that, we don’t mean act like you’re 30, but rather, try a 30-day challenge. It could be fitness related like a 30-day plank challenge or a more creative one like a 30-day cooking challenge. This will motivate you to get disciplined and will help sharpen your cognitive skills to learn new things faster.

Why have they caught the attention of the youth from across the globe? Let me elaborate it for you. As children, most of us dreamt of making it big in the sports arena. We would often get lost in our reverie of living the life of the iconic sportsmen that we watched on television. While we all agree that these ambitions usually go unfulfilled, fantasy sports provide a one-of-akind platform for die hard sports fans across the globe to experience sports in a versatile dimension. The concept of enabling players to select and play with a virtual set of real-life athletes across various teams has today turned into an industry in itself.

What is a Fantasy League? Fantasy League is not an actual sporting event. It is simply a virtual league wherein, individuals compile virtual teams of existing real-life players. These virtual teams then compete on the basis of the stats of the players selected by the individuals in actual sports. The performance of these players is converted into points that are aggregated according to a rota (list) selected by the manager of each fantasy team. What’s even worse is that you cannot just pop it or scrub it vigorously hoping to dry it to its point of culmination. No, blackheads are much peskier than pimples. They refuse to leave unless you really give them a tough fight. This fight, however, doesn’t need to be tough on your budget or your skin. Forget about those expensive and painful salon treatments and say goodbye to those blackheads with these home remedies –

Honey Cinnamon Both honey and cinnamon are known for their salubrious effects on the skin. While honey kills bacteria, cinnamon increases blood flow to the skin. When combined, the two create a magical elixir that will leave your skin glowing and smooth. Mix honey and cinnamon to make a thick paste. Apply this paste and cover it with some cotton. After letting it sit for a few minutes, pull it off and notice the difference. The adhesive like consistency of the paste will painlessly remove your blackheads.

Egg Whites To understand why egg whites help, we need to understand how blackheads work. An egg white mask works on your skin to tighten the pores which will reduce the chances of blackheads ever forming. It will also rid the skin of the current blackheads present on it. The mask is simple to use and doesn’t need any other ingredients. Just put on a few layers of the egg white and let it dry before you wash it off. Your skin will be tight and clean in no time.

Lemon Toner Lemon is a widely accepted natural astringent which will shrink your pores to the point where they can do no harm. While using lemons on your skin, you must remember that they are acidic in nature and can burn if not used right. Make sure you dilute the lemon juice before applying it. After you’re done applying and washing off, use sunscreen before you step out as your skin is probably more sensitive owing to the lemon rub. Avoid this remedy if your skin is too sensitive and easily agitated.

Sugar Scrub Although the above remedies will tighten the pores and remove blackheads that have come into existence, we need to make sure we do something about the dead skin layer that forms over the skin. A sugar scrub will gently exfoliate your skin putting an end to dead skin. All you need to do is mix sugar with some almond and olive oil until you get a scrub like consistency. Rub this scrub lightly over your skin and then wash it off. Doing this 2-3 times a week will ensure that the dead skin is routinely taken off your face and blackheads never start forming.

Baking Soda Baking soda mixed with water essentially does exactly what sugar does. It acts as an exfoliating agent thus sloughing dead skin and doing away with the reason why blackheads rear their ugly (black) heads. Just make a paste of baking soda and water and apply it evenly before washing it off. Make sure you don’t use this remedy very often because baking soda can dry your skin if overused. Do not forget to moisturize when you’re done.

The handmaids are forced to provide children by proxy for infertile women of a higher social status, the wives of Commanders. A great story set in the fictional world of Republic of Gilead, this story by Margaret Atwood is a must read.

DIVERGENT SERIES Veronica Roth’s debut venture that she wrote instead of doing homework in college, is surprisingly brilliant and stands out as one of the well-written books of its genre. Following the post-apocalyptic universe format, where the people of the world are divided into five factions according to their most prominent ability, this book is a must read and is among the most read books for young adults. It follows the story of Tris Prior through the trilogy and her journey as a “divergent”.

One of the earliest novels in this genre, Animal Farm by George Orwell was first published in 1945. A brilliant novella based on the animal point of view and rebellion against human tyranny, at the heart of which is a riot led by the pigs. CUISINE: Italian, Mediterranean BITES AND BOOZE: After a long break, Café Basilico reopened its doors to the residents of Bandra. The ambience is similar to its branch in Colaba, with spacious interiors that exude casualness. We walked in and were instantly tempted by the spread of desserts, made from chocolate, almonds and walnuts, and massive spread of cheesecakes. For starters, we were served the Shiitake Consommé Soup, a+ flavourful mushroom broth, which was beyond brilliant. We were then served the Peri Peri Prawns, which was flavoured with delectable spices. The accompanying Groundnut Chutney complimented it well. For the main course, we had Beaten Steak, which was cooked to perfection. It was served with sautéed Bok Choy which went very well with the meat. For drinks, we called for the Cucumber cooler and the Apple Peach cooler, both of which were nothing but a somewhat different take on fizzy apple juice and jaljira soda. The Primavera pizza was light on the palate with the freshness of peppers and mushrooms and chicken. We ended our meal with the Gooey Chocolate cake, served with vanilla ice-cream. The delicious chocolate simply oozed out of the cake, with every spoon we dug in. Again, a definite must have, to end your meal. FAB OR DRAB: Although the service was relatively slow, the bistro was packed on a weekday. Their pastas, pizzas and steaks are a must-try. . CUISINE: Continental, North Indian BITES AND BOOZE: The Bar Terminal is a gem amongst the many pubs mushrooming all over the city. As we enter, the first thing that draws our attention is the attractive décor of the place made from recycled junk. We start our evening with the Lemon Grass and Kaffir Lime and Majesty’s Cup which were both refreshing. The former was a strong mix of kaffir and lemon grass while the latter was a whiskey-based combination of orange and coriander, which is a must-try. For starters, we tried the Afghani Mushrooms with green stuffing and a dollop of creamy sauce and the Ricotta Spinach Cigar, which had the perfect blend of stuffing and a thin crispy cover which makes the cigar appetising. Arancini Indiana was a starter that took us by surprise. Made from rice and dal, this yummy fried dumpling was served with green and imli ki chutney, and topped with a mini papad. For the main course, we were served the Risotto Sicilian with finely chopped zucchini. The Aloo Paratha with Burhani Raita was a perfect tribute to the northern Indian cuisine. The perfect ending to this scrumptious meal was a sinful Ferrero Mousse. FAB OR DRAB: This bar is a must visit for sevreal reasons. For starters, the ambience sets the mood perfectly. The drinks as well as the food menu is quite elaborate and original. The food and the drink portions are worthy it and the staff is quite hospitable. CHILLIFLAKES CUISINE: Italian BITES AND BOOZE: We decided to gorge on some pizza to spice up one of the month's most dullest Saturday afternoons. Being spoilt for choice by the insanely large number of pizza places in the city, we decided to give Chilli Flakes a go. Considering that everybody had different preferences, Chilli Flakes was the perfect option as they even serve half pizzas. You may have heard of places that serve pizzas by the slice but this concept is a fairly new one. The pizza that stood out was the Forest mushrooms pizza, which was rich in flavour and welltopped. The other winner was the Smoked Mozzarella with Basil â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a simple pizza but an absolute delight to the tastebuds. The Margarita Pizza was nothing to write home about, though the veggie option was nice. Chilli Flakes is a great option for when you're alone at home and can't really finish a whole pizza by yourself. They have some great salads and pasta options too, atbeit we never got around to trying it. FAB OR DRAB: The concept of half pizzas is a great one, although one might find the prices to be slightly on the higher side. They have a good variety of pizzas to try from, with a few standing out from the rest. We would definitely go back for the Forest Mushroom Pizza! The charity run aims to raise money for the benefit of the underprivileged children of the city through Project Footprints. The race will host 3 categories with varying distance goals of 10km, 5km, 3km. Each of these are directed to a specific cause. All 3 events have the same registration fee and all runners will be given a T-shirt, running bib (No timing chip), a finishers medal and a refreshment box with snacks. 2016 JUNE YOUTHINCMAG.COM 75

Tim Cook Visits India

When Apple’s CEO Tim Cook visited India, the internet went all gaga over it. He was greeted by SRK at his home, Mannat in Bandra, where a huge Bollywood star-studded party welcomed him. He had quite a hectic schedule during which, he met with our PM Narendra Modi, and discussed the possibility of manufacturing Apple phones in India. He even managed to attend his first IPL match in Kanpur. He was here to announce the opening of the first iOS app design and development accelerator in Bengaluru, as well as the launching of a map development office in Hyderabad soon.

Instagram Changes its logo

Instagram unveiled its new logo, which was definitely not appreciated by the audience. Some even went ahead to say that it was the biggest design fail of the year. The brand's famous skeuomorphic icon, a virtual representation of a physical camera, was beloved almost universally, and is one of the most instantly recognizable logos in technology. Perhaps the brand owners were not too happy with it and hence, the change. The current logo has rainbow colours and a camera lens which certainly lacks the Instagram feel.

Aishwariya Rai’s Purple Lipstick at Cannes

When Aishwariya Rai decided to try something different this year at Cannes, it faced quite some whiplash. Ash wore a beautiful floral Rami Kadi dress and completed her look with smoky eyes and lilac lips. Her purple lipstick was a rage on the internet. While some called it a really bold move, it has received a lot of negative feedback from the audience. This was her 15th visit to the Cannes Film Festival and she is still the most photographed Bollywood Star. Unfortunately, her fashion style has always been a hit or miss scene.

Congress workers named a public toilet after Rishi Kapoor

Rishi Kapoor tweeted asking if it was somebody’s private property, given that more than 64 prominent public places are name after Gandhi-Nehru clan. He justly added that “We must name important assets of the country who have contributed to society. This didn’t go down well with some Congress workers, and so to seek revenge, they hung a placard with his name on a public toilet in Allahabad. Rishi Kapoor took this gesture in a good way and said he was glad that he could contribute to PM Narendra Modi’s ‘Swachh Bharat’ project in some way.

Italian chefs create mile-long Neapolitan to break longest pizza record

Along the seafront of Naples in Italy, 100 chefs worked together for 11 hours to create a 1,853.88 meters (6082.2 feet / 1.15 miles) long Neapolitan, which Guinness World Records confirmed as the official longest pizza ever made. The recipe for record-breaking success included 2,000 kg of flour, 1,600 kg of tomatoes, 2,000 kg of fiord latté cheese and 200 liters of olive oil – all of which was sourced from local suppliers in the Campania region, ‘the home of pizza’.
