Street smarts Alta Vista Elementary School students put on their thinking caps Dec. 12 and headed outside for the second annual Reading Street event. Sidewalks were named for well known authors like “Dr. Seuss Street” and “Roald Dahl Drive” as students curled up with their blankets and books for a day of reading.

The nice list Sarasota police officers offered Santa Claus a helping hand Dec. 9 at the Target on Fruitville Road. The Sarasota Police Department joined forces with the Sarasota Housing Authority, the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading and Iberia Bank to pair 100 children with officers to shop for holiday gifts.
