Eagle perches on City Island home A bald eagle was seen using the dome of a City Island home as a lookout, perching atop the Mediterranean-styled “Villa Mykonos” recently on John Ringling Parkway by New Pass. Bald eagles live almost exclusively near bodies of water, and the American Eagle Foundation estimates that 70% to 90% of bald eagles’ diet is fish. The raptors, which have wingspans of up to 8 feet, were near extinction in the 1960s, and now have a population of more than 300,000, says the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The bald eagle was chosen to adorn the Great Seal of the United States in 1782 and as the national bird in 2024.
