City’s directors not being evaluated More than 60 Sarasota employees aren’t up to date on evaluations, including directors. According to information obtained from the city of Sarasota human resources department, five of the six city’s directors who report directly to the city manager and take home six-figure salaries have not received an annual evaluation since 2007, the year that former City Manager Bob Bartolotta was hired. The directors join 61 other city

employees who are listed as past due for performance evaluations. The city directors are at-will employees who can be fired at any time by the city manager and receive three months of their salary, according to city Human Resources Director Kurt Hoverter. Hoverter and other human resources directors said it’s up to the city manager or county ad-
ministrator to perform evaluations for directors. Hoverter said he had reminded Bartolotta each year when his directors were due for evaluations. “It was his choice whether to do them or not,” Hoverter said. “He chose not to submit written evaluations for his directors to our office.” Bartolotta could not be reached
for comment for this story. Hoverter noted that performance evaluations are not part of a merit-based pay system. “We haven’t had any raises city-wide since 2008, except for some STEP increases where warranted,” Hoverter said. When asked if he would prefer

+ Carving out his baseball niche Sarasota’s Tim McCarver has been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. He was honored as this year’s inductee into the Ford Frick broadcast wing of the hall for his service to the game as a color commentator for the past 32 years. McCarver played baseball for the Phillies before joining the Mets in the early 1980s and earning a 1986 World Series win. After his playing career, he went on to make a name for himself as a broadcaster for the Phillies, the Mets, the Yankees and the Giants.

budget blues By Alex Mahadevan | News Editor
Sarasota school revenues fall for fifth year County schools will endure budget cuts if the tentative budget is adopted Sept. 11. But, the skid could be approaching its end. Recessions issue a double whammy to economies, whose public schools face budget cuts, weakening the future value of the same economy’s work force. Sarasota County District
Schools weren’t spared from the Great Recession, with a fifth consecutive year of operating budget cuts and staff reductions included in the budget for the 2012-2013 fiscal year.
But, despite the 686 positions cut during the last five years and $120 million slashed from the operating budget in the same period, most of the data fell by the lowest margin over the year since the
housing crash. Millage rates will rise for Sarasota County this year and taxable values are down less than 1% compared with last year, but trends indicate a parachute is opening for the recession-fueled free fall for the school budget.
