Next-level science instruction Andy Harshman has led Sarasota High’s MaST Research Institute for 17 years. The program for advanced scientific and mathematics allows students in grades 9-12 to perform college-level research. This year, Harshman’s contributions to the district were honored when he was named Sarasota County Teacher of the Year for 2026. “We are thrilled to recognize Mr. Harshman as the 2026 Sarasota County Teacher of the Year,” said Superintendent Terry Connor. “He has had a tremendous impact on the lives of his students and school community.” Fellow finalists were fifth grade teacher Becky Hoffman of Pine View School and art teacher Holly Pisaturo of McIntosh Middle School.

During a gala on Dec. 4, many attendees ditched black tie for more colorful attire, such as hats worn by a certain cat in a children’s book. The cause was literacy for children at the “Once Upon a Gala” event held in support of Dreamer’s Academy. The dual-language public charter school, which opened in 2021, welcomed families, community leaders, and supporters to The Westin Sarasota, raising $140,000. The school focuses on intensive literacy and math interventions for its 600 students, nearly 80% of whom live in low-income households. The funds will help 100 children build home libraries, receive customized instruction and after-school tutoring, and participate in activities to bring them to grade level proficiency. $0.10
