Snow day on the Manatee River Despite the warm temperatures, East County sees snow once a year at the Christian Retreat off Upper Manatee River Road when the Family Church hosts its annual Winterfest. About 750 people attended the festival Dec. 5 to tube down the snow mountain slide and then warm up with hot cocoa and s’mores around the fire pit. The festival also included food trucks, live music, karaoke and bingo. For the kids, there were crafting stations, Christmasthemed bounce houses, hay rides and a rock climbing wall. East County’s 8-year-old June Hunter (pictured above) stopped by the cookie decorating station to ice a cookie shaped like a Christmas tree.

Cookies with Santa For Myakka City’s 5-year-old Cash Brown and 3-year-old Olivia Brown (pictured above with Santa), Christmas is filled with decorating the house as a family, driving around looking at lights, and being filled with excitement. This year, they added an extra bit of fun by attending the Milk and Cookies With Santa event at Myakka City Elementary on Dec. 2. Cash asked Santa for a dirt bike, while Olivia requested a puppy. “Christmas is the best through a child’s eyes,” said their mom, Kierstyn Brown. “I remember the same excitement as a kid and love seeing the same from our own children.” Carol Ricks, principal at Myakka Elementary, said the holiday season is time for connection and celebration.
