The man behind the lamp

Adam Hoets blends art, technology and design to create the stunning willowlamp creations, but he first studied architecture at the University of Cape Town, choosing the subject over fine art. “My journey began as an architect, which has been invaluable in shaping my ‘design’ mind. I decided on architecture because my reasoning was that I could be an architect and also be an artist, but not the other way round.”

S

outh African lighting company willowlamp certainly doesn’t do things by halves. Their latest project, which will grace the new Marriott hotel in Charlotte, North Carolina, requires an incredible 26 cubic metres of hanging space and weighs over a ton. Adam Hoets, the creative director and founder of willowlamp, was commissioned by Chicago’s Simeone Deary Design Group for the project.

The award-winning company uses a unique method to create its lighting works of art – ball chains are fixed to laser-cut steel frames using a tiny notch on the frame, resulting in a chain curtain that’s free of any visible fasteners. Their vast range of intricate lighting designs include lamps, pendants, art pieces and, in this case, chandeliers.

As all willowlamp designs do, it’s composed of cascading tiers of metallic ball chain. But unlike the Mandala design, the piece isn’t round – it’s a long and narrow ellipse shape – “A sort of ‘squashed’ Mandala!” says Hoets.

“The piece is based on the original version of our very first Mandala design, which we did

Flattening the design vertically made it far trickier to make than the previous Mandala design. “It’s not simply a matter of rotating the same shapes to form a circular pattern,” he says. For example, “the chain lengths cannot just be repeated shapes, they have to all be worked out to fit the stretched proportions, which is much more difficult”.

Once he started his own architecture company, he began designing eco-lodges and gradually transitioned to lighting design in 2005. He wanted to develop a design‑related product without the hindrance of clients, feeling that the designer‑client relationship restrict a designer’s ability to explore ideas. Today he takes inspiration from nature and sacred geometry – geometric shapes and proportions that underpin religious architecture and designs in nature. “This is nature in its purest, highest state and is something I’m very interested in and continuously explore in my work,” he says.

The chandelier had both upper and lower tiers of chain, which added further complications, and was almost too big to manufacture on willowlamp’s premises. The size and weight of the light necessitated a number of design innovations. The extruded shapes that made up the chain curtains were broken up into separate panels, which were then individually mounted to a ceiling frame and fitted together like a jigsaw puzzle. “This is the only way to install a piece such as this, because the combined weight is one ton!” says Hoets.

onfidence in the South African property market is improving, if the latest Absa Homeowner Sentiment Index is any indication. The index ended Q4 2020 at 80% – a 4% improvement. And this positive sentiment towards buying property showed its third consecutive quarter of improvement. Many buyers are now heading to coastal locations to recharge their batteries on a more permanent basis. The KwaZulu‑Natal North Coast has always attracted interest. Now, as more homebuyers – including Gauteng – consider investing in this thriving region, property sales are edging further north, particularly with new schools and commercial developments in the pipeline for these areas, says Pam Golding Properties area principal Farrah Williamson. “As a primary residential destination, coastal hamlets such as Shaka’s Rock, Salt Rock, Sheffield, Tinley Manor, Blythedale,

Prince’s Grant and Zinkwazi are no longer perceived as ‘too far up the coast’, particularly since the rapid uptake of the work-from-home trend. These areas are extremely attractive to a cross section of home purchasers from various provinces,” says Williamson. “Generally speaking, as a first-time buyer or retiree looking to get into a secure lifestyle estate, you can purchase a home at around R1,8m, with access to excellent facilities, which is exceptional value for money. If you prefer to buy land to build your own home, a minimum spend – including construction – would be R3,5m to R4m.”

Development specialists Collins Residential is developing Zululami Luxury Coastal Estate in Sheffield on a stretch of KZN North Coast. “Phase 2 indicates at least 35% of buyers are from Gauteng, comprising largely of younger families aged between 35 and 55,” says CEO Murray Collins. “With supreme connectivity on the estate, many residents

can work fully or partially, or commute to nearby business and commercial hubs of Umhlanga, La Lucia and Ballito.”

Micro-apartment development planned for Cape Town CBD Known for their Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs developments, Rawson Developers are set to break ground on their first inner‑city build in Loop Street, The Tokyo. Their previous suburban developments include The Winchester, The Westwood, The Premier and Newlands Peak, which sold more than 100 apartments on launch day despite unfavourable market conditions resulting from hard lockdown. Says Brad Morgan, new development manager, Rawson Developers, “Our overarching aim is to not only create buildings

that enhance an area and boost its potential, but that also provide buyers with sound investment opportunities. The Tokyo will be our first City Centre development, and we’re very enthusiastic about the opportunity to offer an extra promise of investment and interest to the area.” The Tokyo will consist of 15 floors of luxury micro-apartments and a ground floor restaurant and cafe, 24-hour concierge service, business lounge and state‑of‑the‑art fitness centre. “The Tokyo’s lock-up-and‑go apartments will attract urbanites and travellers alike, and our biggest hope is to

inject a renewed life force into one of our city’s tourism hotspots,” says Morgan. “Increased foot traffic in the area will hopefully, in turn, also provide more clientele for local dining and retail establishments that have all felt the undeniable aftermath of a quiet lockdown period.” Loop Street is situated between the city’s vibey Long and Bree Streets and is a favoured area for dining, entertainment, shopping and sightseeing, equally popular with locals and tourists. Prices start from R950,000 and the development is set to be completed by March 2023.

Country estate launches new homes Sitari Country Estate in Somerset West has just released the first of their new development for 2021: Sitari Village Homes, which consists of 12 contemporary, turnkey built homes. He says they have noticed an increased demand from especially millennials. “The EB-5 Programme – which offers the opportunity to invest in the USA and become a resident – remains the quickest and simplest route to gain lawful and legitimate access to the USA for applicants and their immediate family to live, study and work there,” says Golding. “By investing $900,000 (±R13m) in a US government approved development in a designated targeted employment area, one is guaranteed Green Card status, while your capital is protected in an active investment in the US – with full return of funds after the end of the project, and you are eligible for a US passport after five years.” A further benefit is

that once you’re a US passport holder, you enjoy visa‑free travel to approximately 160 countries. Chris Immelman, who heads up Pam Golding International, says high net-worth individuals, as well as families, are looking at immigration options. This includes retirees, millennials and families from Gauteng, followed by the Western Cape. “Interestingly, the effect of the pandemic in the USA has not impacted enquiries from applicants in any way – it appears the investors are more positively focused on the ability of the US economy to regain its traction and dominance,” says Immelman. Says Immelman, “The investment opportunity we currently offer, is the Gainsville student accommodation project, a new 12-storey building with approximately 205 units and 563 beds situated in Gainsville, Florida, only 0,5km from the University of Florida campus.”
