U

nsurprisingly, the Berea is one of Durban’s oldest suburban belts, the settlement that overlooked the sea in the early days of the then province of Natal. Its great advantage was that homes were on a good gradient – many old Victorian homes had so-called widow’s walks high up, for a bird’s eye view of the goings on in the Bay. The seafaring life in the early days was crucial to Durban, and the Berea was the lookout point.

Shiny, happy people Residents of the Berea fall into a few categories. Because the area stretches both wide and high, there’s a property here for nearly every pocket. The innumerable apartment blocks and sectional title townhouses draw first-time homeowners. Lower down the Berea on the edge of the City – or over the hill towards Brickfield Road – prices are affordable, and these properties in demand.

In Musgrave and Morningside, in the prime roads, gracious, spacious apartment blocks fetch a pretty penny – these are either old, renovated blocks with high ceilings, vast rooms and panoramic views, or today, increasingly brand-new, large, modern apartment blocks for the well-heeled, with parking up to the front door.

Greg Hayes of Stepping Stone Studios has been in Florida Road for the past 24 years. “I saw the potential then for what is happening now.”

The business deals in fine art, custom and antique mirrors big and small, and framing. He services the entire Berea area, including those who’ve moved north but still have children at private schools. “They still support us, and business is good.”

The Berea really does have a wide range of architecture, from Victorian mansions to Edwardian bungalows, massive modern blocks to traditional Durban veranda-style homes… Old, tall, established trees adorn many of the streets, and residents celebrate the beauty of those which flower seasonally.

Greg says, “We also handmake antique mirrors, and that’s very popular now.

Our clients include architects, interior designers, artists, businesses and homeowners.”

But the residential composition of the Berea is also about educational facilities. Near the base of the area, is the Durban University of Technology (DUT), so student accommodation is in great demand.

Stepping Stone recently moved to Florida Fields, but for various logistical reasons, will be returning to their old Florida Road shop soon.

Up in the more rarefied air of Musgrave and immediate surrounds, are some of the country’s top private schools like Durban Girls’ College, Maris Stella and Clifton College. These schools have had a marked effect on the property market, as parents jostle to build or buy homes on their doorstep. There’s no doubt that many parents remain on the Berea for the duration of their children’s schooling at these elite establishments, then either move to a north coast gated estate, or semigrate to Cape Town or Stellenbosch where their children will attend university.

Then there’s a large group of residents who love life on the Berea – wouldn’t say thank you for a home north or west. They love the proximity to the city and beaches – even if only to walk on the promenade, join in Saturday’s parkrun, or do their yoga on Circus Circus’s rooftop – and are often involved in the artier side of city living, like concerts and plays.

“Durban is so small,” is heard repeatedly, and true, because Durbanites want it to be so – everybody enjoys that near-village type existence. Pop into Charlie’s or Mark Gold, and it’s rare not to bump into a friend or acquaintance. Many of the old Durban families lived the high life on the Berea, and although some have flown north, many have remained for the convenience and familiarity of people and landscape.

Retirement homes like The Caister and Garden Grove are popular.

Living here on the fringes of town, is largely for the sociable. No matter whether it’s regular dinners with friends, or the twice-weekly bridge, the older generation are alive and well.

And now, there’s Florida Road, where everybody, particularly the younger generation, are working, living and playing… sometimes a little loudly for the surrounding residents’ taste, but nevertheless, they’ve breathed new life into an area which was fading. This is very much a case of Watch.This.Space.

This year it seems that in terms of colour, nature rules. Not that the tones identified by different colourists are the same, but they have a green thread running through them all.

here’s little doubt that colours and tones have an effect not only on a room, but certainly on our moods. Currently, and perhaps particularly in South Africa, there’s a yearning for a sense of calm amid the chaos and noise of technology and loud opinions. Nature and natural materials have the power to calm us, while drawing us back to our roots and restoring that lost connectivity to things that really matter.

Plascon chooses Mulberry Leaf

Plascon’s colour for 2020 is Mulberry Leaf (G3-D1-2), a green by anybody’s standard. “Mulberry Leaf helps us drown out the noise by creating a cocoon of green goodness in our homes. With this colour, staying home will feel like a walk in the park,” says Katlego Kondlo, Plascon’s head of decorative marketing. Bottom line, Plascon considers wellness and sustainable living to be more achievable with this balanced, grounded and organic vegetable green tone.

If you’re looking for a statement wall – rather than all four walls of Mulberry Leaf – Plascon has suggestions for great combinations. Consider contrasting it with crisp, clean white – the room becomes a cool oasis. Katlego also suggests, “complementing the feature wall with a warm neutral such as Cream of Mushroom (32) and golden accents with Gold Cadillac (Y3-B1-1)”.

Rose gold is going to be around for a few more seasons yet, so use it with Mulberry Leaf for glamour amid a balanced and earthy space. Katlego adds, “Soft cool greys like Ripple 74 and copper-like pink Warm Welcome (O4-C1-4) are great as background colours with Mulberry Leaf, too.”

Dulux compiled some different looks, all around Tranquil Dawn (45GY 55/052), each one for a different space, different mood. For a lounge, they used it with a sandy tone to create a nurturing space, focussing on wellbeing. They teamed it up with Bellcourt Castle (45YY 53/151) and Mushroom Morning (65YY 71/071).

If you want green appeal to start on your doorstep, painting your front door in Mulberry Leaf apparently speaks volumes about your values, aspirations and yearning for a natural connection.

Another living room scenario saw Tranquil Dawn on the walls as a thin vertical stripe, essentially a pale contrast shade separating Military Green 50GY 13/136 and Cheeky Grey (78GG 19/078). A bedroom should be the ideal antidote to today’s lifestyle, so Dulux painted Tranquil Dawn walls, which appears muted and minimalist when combined with a back wall and ceiling painted in similar tones which act as a frame and canopy to the bed – Grey Gimmick (22YR 17/023) and Black Mica (30BB 05/022).

A remarkable young lady and a strong leader, she was also head girl, dux of DGC, and played first-team hockey. Emma has been accepted at Stellenbosch University to study mechatronic engineering. Kereena Bhana and Caitlin Honeywell both achieved second place with an average

of 91% each. Kereena also made the IEB Outstanding Achiever category with eight distinctions. She’s been accepted to study medicine at the University of Cape Town. Caitlin made the IEB Commendable Achiever category with seven distinctions and has been accepted to study a BA degree at UCT. Rachel Wedderburn-Maxwell follows with an average of 89%, with seven distinctions, and was placed in the IEB Commendable Achiever category. Rachel is an accomplished pianist and violinist and she was invited to play as a soloist with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra. She has applied to study medicine at UCT as well as the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Both Emma and Kereena were placed in the IEB Outstanding Achievers category nationally. They’re among 17 pupils from 11 schools in KwaZuluNatal who achieved within the top 5% of learners in six or more subjects.

Caitlin and Rachel were placed in the IEB Commendable Achievement category nationally. They’re among 10 pupils from seven schools in KwaZuluNatal who achieved within the top 5% of learners in five or more subjects.

The IEB is an excellent foundation and aligns with DGC’s vision to provide a globally relevant, balanced education and to develop significant women, in all spheres of society.

Our aim at Durban Girls’ College is to contribute positively to education in South Africa through producing young women of substance who find their niche and who champion social responsibility, social justice, equality and environmental challenges; thereby enriching our community.
