A

melia Smith, aka Small Creature, is a familiar face around Durban. Most locals would recognise her from her early Whimsy work, which focused on enchanting characters and whimsical story tale snapshots. We caught up with this multitalented Durbanite to talk art, hiking and her latest collection of work.

Q: Share a little Amelia 101 with us.

A: After completing my Honours at the Michaelis School of Fine Art in Cape Town, I spent a good few years discovering that my real passion was not conceptual photography (which I had majored in), but illustration. I began scribbling and soon established a little brand called Whimsy. A solo exhibition and a website later, I decided to pack it in and pursue a day job to pay the ever-persistent bills. I “daylight” as a textile designer and moonlight as a freelance illustrator. Currently, after a tiny solo show in June this year, I am in the process of launching my creative persona: Small Creature.

Q: When did you start discovering your artistic passions, and what medium do you predominantly work in?

A: A multitude of high school exam pad pages were liberated from

dreary maths and Afrikaans assignments and decorated with scribblings, characters and fantastical typography. I took art as a subject at school and went on to study it. However, I didn’t draw as much as you’d think. It was only much later that my mind loosened from an austere academic grip that I began to scribble again. I’m a traditionalist, and thus love pencil/pen and paper, but recently I have been seduced by the digital age and I’ve been experimenting in Photoshop.

Q: How would you describe the content and style of your art?

A: I walk a fine line between enchanting and melancholy.

I mostly draw characters and personalities that evoke a story, even if there isn’t one already written.

Q: Chat to us about your most recent Woebots series.

A: In June, I had a little solo exhibition at The Commune to showcase the beginnings of my first book. However, Woebots is a project, at last count seven years in the creating. Ultimately, it will be an illustrated anthology of poems about ill-fated robots.

Chef Adam Robinson is the man behind The Glenwood Bakery who focuses on producing incredible breads. “At an early stage of my career as a chef and restaurateur, bread became an important part of what we served our customers. My technical interest in bread-making grew over the last 10 years of my life. And so the notion of starting a bakery seemed like a natural and complimentary extension of my previous career in restaurants,” he says.

Using three different kinds of flour and specific techniques, The Glenwood Bakery produces a variety of artisan breads. “What makes bread artisanal, as opposed to industrial, is chiefly how the doughs are treated. Some of our doughs are fermented for up to three days, until the breads are being formed by hand and baked.

Temperature, ambient humidity, microorganisms and hydration all affect proofing, formed loaves, and also the bulk doughs,” says Adam.

Home to beautiful handcrafted breads, Old Town Italy is taking bread-making to another level. “Our fastest-selling artisan bread is our house bread, Rustico. It is made from stoneground, white bread flour, is rectangular in shape and has a very crispy crust, with a stringy texture. It is a sourdough bread and is similar to ciabatta,” says Renzo Scribante, Remo’s founder and managing director at Rembrothers.

“We pride ourselves on the exceptional quality of our homemade, artisanal breads, made from scratch, using only the finest ingre­ dients. Our bakery has evolved into a fully fledged artisanal unit focused on producing natural sourdough breads using ingredients that are preservative-free. We have taken a big step forward by installing a Sebastia Hornos wood-fired oven from Spain, that uses a naturally insulated sandpit to evenly heat its space that runs 24 hours a day,” adds Renzo.

I

f you’re like me, you probably think Umhlanga is mostly highrise buildings right on the edge of the ocean. But step back a street or two into Marine Drive – the older, more established, tree-lined part of the suburb – and you’ll find somewhere far more wonderful. Teremok Marine is a boutique hotel that previously belonged to three generations of the Vladykin family (hence the Russian name) and is now run by a mother and two daughters. The result is a hotel and spa where every detail has been lovingly rendered, so much so that you may find it difficult to leave.

At least that was my experience. The house is rambling, but feels personal and intimate, thanks to its quirky decor and small personal touches.

Things like iced water waiting for you in your room, a tea and coffee station where you can help yourself any time of day or night, an honesty bar stocked with any drink you might want,

and rooms that have been so personally decorated you can sense the care and attention that’s gone into each choice.

Of course, there are also the amazing ocean and garden views, the sparkling pool and the delicious breakfast on offer, but those I anticipated before I arrived at Teremok. What I didn’t anticipate was the sense of care and attention I received from the moment I stepped inside: as if they’d personally been waiting for me and wanted to do everything possible to make my stay wonderful.

And wonderful it was. The on-site spa is a tiny slice of heaven, offering a surprisingly wide range of treatments for body and face, and a fabulously quirky shop with a range of delightful gifts. I felt like a cross between a marshmallow and a cloud after my treatments, and just had the strength to float upstairs to my room (really more of a suite) and lounge around soaking up the tropical paradise outside

my window. It ticks all the boxes for a stay in Umhlanga: ocean views, convenience, comfort, relaxation.

In fact, the only thing Teremok doesn’t offer is dinner, but they’ll happily give you plenty of recommendations for local spots to try out.

It is rare to find somewhere that feels like a hidden gem and delivers on that feeling. Teremok Marine manages to do both.

SA property sector increases

T

he South African property sector is worth R5,8 trillion, according to results from the latest study from the Property Sector Charter Council, undertaken to determine the size of SA’s property sector.

The sector’s size is R5,3 trillion with a further R520bn land officially zoned for commercial and residential development, the study states, using figures from the 2014/15 financial year. This is an increase of nearly R1 trillion since the end of 2010, when the size of the South African property market was R4,9 trillion.

Compiled by MSCI for the council and released in July, the study supplements the council’s SA Property Sector Economic Impact Report.

It estimated the sector’s contribution to gross domestic product was R191,4bn in 2012 in terms of annual income and expenditure flows generated by the sector, and a R46,5bn contribution to the fiscus.

R95m investment into Mount Edgecombe frail care facility

he Collins Group, developer of Mount Edgecombe Retirement Village, has confirmed a R95m investment into the estate’s frail care facility.

This development is set to be the biggest frail care centre in KwaZulu-Natal, and will open to the public by March 2018.

“The facility will consist of a care centre with assisted living, frail care and a community centre. rranging pictures is something you either understand instinc­ tively, or you don’t. There are many so-called rules around hanging pictures, and they’re all useful.

Ideally, you shouldn’t add bits and pieces of art randomly. Try this idea – it’s time-consuming, but likely to save your sanity. Decide which work you’d like in which room. Then cut out brown paper templates and label them.

Now lay out the templates on the floor, moving the pieces around so they fit comfortably together and work well in the space. When you’re happy, take a photograph of the layout. That way, you can see how the overall shape works.

Principles like balance, scale, proportion, colours and rhythm will be bandied around, but the more you play around, the more you may find these concepts come naturally. There’s no need to have wall-to-wall artwork – blank space is important, and can enhance the artwork.

Generally, hang art so the centre of the painting is at eye level. However, in a lounge, for example, you’re generally sitting, so hang the art a little lower. If you have an art collection, you want the centre of the majority of paintings to be at eye level.

Look at the total shape of the wall first and let it guide the shape of your arrangement. If it’s a big wall, think big – either with single or large works of art, or a grouping of small pieces close together, which will make a single big impression.

Remember that your art will enhance the wall, and the way you use the wall surface can enhance your art. For example, arranging tall, thin works can visually lengthen the wall; exotic gilt frames can add glamour and mood; and simple white frames will jump out at you off a rich, darkly painted wall.

Play around, but as a general rule, for wider walls, arrange work lengthwise; for tall ones, hang art vertically.

Art can inspire room colours, so select a couple of great colours from the paintings, and let them be the basis of your room colour.

Arrange art that looks similar symmetrically, like botanicals, or black and white sketches. Place them in a single, double or treble line, ideally with similar/same colour mount boards – no more than three different shades – and use black/white or similar frames.

That uniformity can add a sense of order, even formality, to a space.

Likewise, dissimilar art can be arranged asymmetrically – don’t be bound by the rule of thumb of keeping paintings level, either above or below.

Different shapes and sizes can work very well together, but do hang them snugly together.

To bulk up your collection, mix and match with mirrors, particularly in darker areas. You can even use similar frames or colours – or antique mirrors.

Q: Who are your neighbours?

A: Restaurants surround us, including RocoMamas and Remo’s Villaggio, and we’re located close to a number of convenience stores.

The Protea Hotel Umhlanga is also situated in the same area.

Q: How did your business start?

A: My designer, Gareth Henderson, and I were chatting about creating retail opportunities to counteract the effects of single-exit price schedules on our retail pharmacy.

Our location attracts a high level of tourists and visitors to Durban and this was one way we could encourage both interest in our store and showcase South African talent.

Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area?

A: They are quite high, but we are able to mitigate that by being open until late every day.

Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop?

A: Our existing premises were perfectly suited to our needs.

Q: Do you have any expansion plans?

A: We’re always looking for new opportunities, and on the lookout for new products, designers or creative talent to showcase.

Q: How did you find your premises?

A: We expanded our store space to create Catalyst.

Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business?

A: There is a distinctive synergy between the pharmacy and the gift store, as one supports the other.

Most importantly, we’re located within an area that attracts tourists and has high foot traffic. Catalyst is now a 40m2 store located within the pharmacy, and it’s right in the heart of Umhlanga’s village. We have the added advantage of being

A

terrific location and a superb choice of property are all factors which have been drawing buyers to Durban North for years. The suburb is also ideally situated for those who work in Durban – which is a mere 11km away – or in the newer commercial centres to the north, a relatively short 15-minute drive from the centre of the suburb. It is also home to some of the best schools in the country like Danville Park Girls’ High School whose class of 2015 (consisting of 132 pupils) achieved 100 % pass rate and a 100% Bachelor’s pass rate - the highest in South Africa.

Although it is an older suburb, a large number of homes have been renovated and the area boasts some beautiful, modern properties. Most of the homes fall under the freehold banner, and because of the desirability of the suburb, those who invest here seem reluctant to leave. Lightstone statistics reveal that half of those who move into the area stay in their homes for more than 11 years.

So what draws buyers to this part of town? Convenience has a big role to play.

Add good schools, a host of fantastic restaurants and some excellent shopping into the mix and you have the perfect suburb in which to live. The area also features some excellent sporting amenities including the Riverside Sports club which offers, among others, facilities for hockey, soccer and rugby.

It is also home to the well-known Riverside Harriers running club.

Durban North has also exploded commercially. Judging by the numbers and the increase in traffic, this has added to the attraction and the area is now very popular with Durbanites.

This popularity has impacted property prices which have risen sharply since 2005 when the average price paid for a freehold property hovered around the R1,7m mark. These days, the average price for a freehold home has soared to around R3m in this gorgeous suburb.

Agent commentary Q: What amenities are on offer in Durban North?

A: Most of this beautiful part of the country was once a coastal dune forest system, of which there is still evidence in the mangrove swamps. The Umgeni River Bird Park is a popular attraction and bears testimony to the number of birds attracted to the area.

Visitors are able to walk through the aviaries and get up close and personal with the birds, making this a very special place. If peace and quiet is your thing, the Japanese Gardens is another terrific place to visit. Enjoy a picnic with friends and family or take a gentle stroll through the oriental landscape which combines tranquillity with an authentic eastern feel.

Q: What draws buyers to the area and what can they expect to pay?

A: Durban North remains one of the more popular property markets in the broader Durban area. This market is very active because of its proximity to schools, beaches, shopping malls, churches, sports and recreational clubs. Properties which are priced correctly, usually sell within a month. The most ac­tive price band is under R3,5m where we are seeing a stock shortage. In the higher price bands (R5m plus) stock is not turning as quickly and these homes stay on the market for longer. Property prices have, however, remained realistic and affordable, and it is still possible to purchase a reasonably priced home.

Q: How has Durban North changed over the past five years?

A: Durban North has always been a sought-after suburb but has grown in popularity and demand due to its expansion in retail, enter­tainment and commercial nodes and the development of exceptional schools. Its central position and convenient freeway access make it very popular. The high demand has pushed prices up, which has created an overflow into sur­rounding suburbs. Due to new blood coming in, older homes are being transformed. The demand for joint living has increased, with families looking for garden cottages for extended family, which the large plots in Durban North enable most comfortably.
