Tasting my way through all four was an excellent introduction to some new South African wines, and they paired well with simple, delicious Italian dishes such as seafood ravioli, heart-warming polpette with polenta and arancini stuffed with spinach.

The vibe is relaxed and communal with sharing plates from mezze with flatbreads, to beef tataki, tuna ceviche and pork belly tacos – each beautifully prepared and full of flavour. There are hearty main dishes of confit pork belly with smoked apple and braised red cabbage, Angus ribeye steaks and sticky pork loin ribs for those who’ve had enough of sharing. The decadent chocolate lava cake with lime ice cream is a rousing finale to a convivial evening.

An afternoon at Openwine is like visiting foodie friends with a wellstocked cellar. The small “enoteca” on Wale Street is the dream of Marta Gobbi and Raphael Paterniti. They have created the South African equivalent of the traditional Italian wine shop, where you can taste before you buy a bottle, or pop in for a glass of wine and a plate of food. The couple meet all the winemakers and taste each wine that they stock, so you get the story of each wine as you chat with them.

The Mess in De Waterkant is another new eatery that’s perfect for informal evening meals with friends, or relaxed cocktails in the open courtyard on sultry summer evenings. Inspired by her travels around the world, restaurateur Carlene de Gouveia presents the best of all the cuisines she has tasted in short menu that takes you on a journey of flavours.

“It’s not fusion,” says consultant chef Luke Wonnacott, who brought Carlene’s culinary vision to life, “each dish has its own identity; Spanish is Spanish, and so on.”

ith tourism as its lifeblood, it should be no surprise that Cape Town is a world-class city. One area in Cape Town that plays home to many visitors is the waterfront, and I can understand why.

Lounging at the Tobago’s Bar at the pool side of the Radisson is the perfect way to unwind for me. What could be better than staring out to sea while sipping on an ice-cold drink? The hotel overlooks a private marina and has the incredible Table Mountain behind it. It also has an infinity pool that flows into the ocean.

The Radisson’s location also allows for easy access to the V&A Waterfront and the city centre if you feel the need to venture out.

The hotel is abuzz with activity in the evenings and Saturday nights are a seafood extravaganza at the Seaside Grill on the terrace. You can choose exactly what you’d like. “That’s why I tell everyone that I’ve got the best office in town,” says chef Norman Heath as he points to the surrounding view while he sears a piece of tuna with precision. With live music and visitors from all over the world, I understand why so many tourists love Cape Town.

ot in the mood for white wine, but it’s too hot for red?

With summer in full swing, a chilled bottle of rosé is the answer.

Long derided by “serious” wine drinkers for being too sweet and lacking in nuance, rosé wines are on the up. Worldwide, the demand for rosé is booming as winemakers move away from the “sticky pink” offerings in favour of dry fruit-driven styles.

Contrary to what you might think, rosé isn’t made by simply mixing red and white wines. Quality rosé wines are made in a similar method to white wine, but using red grapes.

The blush of pink comes from the grape juice soaking on the skins after crushing. This “maceration” lasts anywhere from a few hours to a few days, before the pink juice is drained and fermented.

Any red wine grape can be used to make rosé, but the classic cultivars of Provence, the spiritual home of rosé, are Grenache, Mourvèdre and Cinsaut.

Locally, winemakers are getting adventurous, with full-bodied rosé wines made from Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Whichever

style you prefer, you won’t go wrong with these delicious bottles of pink.

Using proudly South African Pinotage, this well-priced summer quaffer from winemaker Martin Lamprecht is packed with moreish strawberry and raspberry notes. Don’t be shy to enjoy it with a few blocks of ice.

Babylonstoren Mourvèdre Rosé 2016

The delicate salmon blush is the first clue this isn’t your average “pink”.

Made from Mourvèdre, this elegantly dry rosé is a wine to be savoured rather than casually sipped. It has rose and raspberry on the nose, with a mouthful of strawberry and candy floss flavours.

It pairs beautifully with smoked salmon or seared trout. Its little surprise that it featured in the top 10 wines at the recent Rosé Rocks wine competition.

Cavalli Pink Pony

Despite the striking labelling, this rosé from Stellenbosch estate Cavalli harks back to a more traditional Provençal style. Made from Grenache grapes, the expected berry notes are underpinned by a delicate spice and earthiness. A wonderful summer wine.

So we created This Way Out – the portal to the great outdoors.

Q: Why did you choose this area for your business?

A: Cape Town is known for its active outdoor lifestyle. We focus on run, hike, bike, sail and climb.

With the ocean and Table Mountain on our doorstep, it was an obvious choice.

Q: How did you find your premises?

A: We engaged with Brent Currin from Swindon Properties, now Currin Property Group. I have worked with Brent previously and he shares our vision and passion for sport and retail. He hit the nail right on the head with this: an old heritage building once used as a coffee-grinding factory.

he new This Way Out store is an inside space for people who love the outdoors. Founder and owner Abrie Botma tells us more the space which also has a coffee bar.

Q: How did your business start?

A: I have always had an immense love for the outdoors and sports.

I wanted to create a retail space for people who love doing sport

Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business?

A: It’s just off Bree Street, a popular destination for high-end bike and sport retailers. We also offer bike rentals, and the location gives easy access to all the tourists. We’re extremely proud of winning the 2016 Retail Design and Development Award for the innovative store design by Plan It Design who used the space really creatively, so it’s a cool place to shop and hang out.

Q: Who are your neighbours?

A: S ome iconic coffee shops, bars and restaurants, as well as upmarket bike and fitness retailers.

Q: What are the rental/sales prices like in this area?

A: Considering the size and location and compared to other properties in shopping centres, it is fair.

Q: What is your shop footprint?

A: On average, between 150 and 200 customers a week.

Q: Do you have any expansion plans?

A: Definitely! This is our third This Way Out store in Cape Town, (the others are at Meerendal and Contermanskloof, Durbanville) with a fourth planned for Somerset West early in the new year. Following that, the plan is to expand the footprint to Pretoria and Johannesburg.

Q: Do you operate online as well?

A: We do. We have an online store on our website and an app which anyone can download from the iOS or Android app stores.

he appeal of Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard to both residents and visitors is easy to see: there is stunning scenery, beautiful beaches, a cosmopolitan vibe and the heart of the city is close at hand for work and leisure. Property here has achieved some of the highest prices in South Africa, and it’s no surprise that new developments in the area sell fast.

The Western Cape’s quality of life is what attracts those riding the semigration wave here from upcountry, and the Atlantic Seaboard is a top choice for those who prefer an urban setting. “Being South Africa’s oldest city, Cape Town has very little land available for development,” says Rob Stefanutto, MD, Dogon Group Properties. “Generally, developments within the city are on land where there is an old building that still has residual value, which adds to the expense for the developer. But, as a result, new developments here hold their value, as there are limited opportunities for further development and a huge demand for these properties.”

According to Stefanutto, those looking to buy in new developments in the Atlantic Seaboard fall into three categories: residential buyers wanting the convenience of a modern new

building and looking for large live-in or entry-level first-time properties, an international group looking for trophy properties with modern amenities and the peace of mind of warranties offered by developers, and investors who buy off-plan with short-term letting plans. The newest developments also take Airbnb renting into consideration, which Stefanutto says gives excellent yields and is a popular solution for those who want to use their properties for part of the year when they are in Cape Town.

New Nedbank building in Umhlanga

N

edbank has committed to investing R1bn into a new mixed-use office and retail development in Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal, which is currently under construction.

The iconic Park Square development, which is located in the fast-growing Umhlanga Parkside node adjacent to CJ Saunders Park and opposite the Gateway Theatre of Shopping, will have a four-star Green Star Design and As-Built rating and will serve as one of Nedbank Group’s flagship campuses in KwaZulu-Natal.

According to Anand Joseph, divisional executive, Nedbank Corporate and Investment Banking Property Finance in KwaZuluNatal, the bank’s R1bn investment in the Park Square development

project is further demonstration of its confidence in KwaZuluNatal as a vital commercial and retail hub for South Africa. “In addition to creating employment opportunities for many people from surrounding communities, Park Square reinforces the seriousness with which Nedbank takes its responsibility to playing a vital part in the ongoing growth and development of South Africa’s economy,” says Joseph.

Once completed, Park Square will offer 40,000m² of gross lettable area, of which 4,000m² will be for retail usage, while the remaining 36,000m² will be commercial space, 18,000m² of which will be A-grade offices. Around 50% of the office component will be occupied by Nedbank itself.

ome automation has taken a significant technological leap forward over the last few years. Today’s wireless networks and smart devices allow users to take home control to the next level: high-tech homes can be tuned in to switch on lights and stream your favourite music when you’re on your way back from work.
