recently met some innovative wine guys who go by the name of Black Elephant Vintners. Based in Franschhoek it’s the partnership between friends Jacques, Kevin and Raymond, and I think they’re about to unplug the wine scene a bit.

Enter a wine pairing with a delectable menu dégustation at Ryan’s Kitchen in the Tasting Studio. The wines are eclectic and cool. With slick labels that have interesting names and great stories behind the wines, Black Elephant (bevintners.co.za) is set to shake things up a bit.

We visited during the changeover to the summer menu, the walls having metamorphosed from deep and dark winter green to an earthy cinnamon shade hinting at sunshine and summerbaked earth. Running to several decorative pages, the huge printed menus are themselves works of art with a storyline. While last winter’s menu featured rich still life photographs inspired by 16th century Spanish painter Juan Sánchez Cotán, for summer, Jacques has gone for a clean feel with graphic leaf and vegetable contact prints, black on white. “There’s a very vegetal and earthy feeling to the summer menu,” says Jacques. “It’s cleaner and lighter, not saturated with colour, but refreshing and peaceful. We try to read where people’s state of mind is. Now is a busy time, everyone’s tired and exhausted, it’s a been a long year. Here they can sit down, relax, and breathe through it.”

The menu mirrors this positive and reassuring mood. The tuna carpaccio was fresh and light, dressed with rice vinegar and tamari, grounded with thin slices of crunchy daikon radishes from Jacques’s garden in Montagu where he also grows many of his herbs and citrus fruits. The bright and zesty carrot and mango salad had chickpeas, toasted almonds and crispy caramelised onion.

I

’ve often headed to Stellenbosch for mini adventures. Recently I decided to really explore the area and I discovered a fun, family-focused and super-friendly spot right on our doorstep.

First stop was the bubbly estate Villiera. Even though I pretty much have a degree in drinking its MCC, I hadn’t visited the farm. I felt immediately at home surrounded by all the bubbles. We started the day with a game drive and as it was my son’s first mini safari there was a lot of excitement. The wildlife sanctuary is home to a number of mammals: springbuck, kudu, bontebok, eland and gemsbok, as well as giraffe, black wildebeest and zebra. After a fun nature adventure, back at the tasting room Pascal took us through the MCC tasting, which I loved. The Grier family are pioneering the way with MCC, including making one of the bubblies from grapes in their France vineyard which they then bottle for the South African market.

Highlight: Seeing an angry baboon spider put its fangs out at us when we were on the game drive, and tasting the Grier Brut.

Then it was on to Hartenberg Wine Estate for a relaxed afternoon. Another farm that I know by its wine, the setting is naturally beautiful.

Rows of trees greet you as you walk down a stairway to the estate’s restaurant. Known for its picnics, Hartenberg also does an impressive lunch – think salmon roulade and succulent lamb chops. It’s the perfect outdoor spot – not too overcrowded and a predominantly natural setting for the little ones to explore. It’s the ideal way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Highlight: Taking photos under the Coral tree, and tasting the Eleanor Chardonnay.

an Loveren Family Vineyards has long been known for producing pocket-friendly quaffers across a wide range of labels, from its ubiquitous Four Cousins, South Africa’s biggest-selling bottled wine brand, to the eco-friendly and drinkable Tangled Tree, carried in recyclable plastic bottles.

But few would associate Van Loveren with handcrafted single-vineyard wines selling for north of R120 a bottle. That might be about to change, with a brand new look for the family-owned cellar’s flagship range, dubbed Christina in honour of the Van Loveren family matriarch who arrived in the Cape in 1699.

We checked into The Stellenbosch Hotel in Dorp Street for the night. Built on land granted by Governor Simon van der Stel around 1692, the building was restored in the late ’80s and has since been declared a national monument. I enjoyed the historical feel of the hotel as well as witnessing how intrigued my son was to stay there – it reminded me how magical it is. The hotel is literally on the doorstep of art galleries, museums and great eateries. Stellenbosch Kitchen restaurant is the dining partner of the hotel. Recently renovated, this is a gem which offers new takes on classic dishes from around the world. Big on local produce, the food is excellent and there is an extensive wine list that includes great offerings by the glass.

As with the high-end offering from many large producers, the Christina range is produced from “a cellar within a cellar”, says Van Loveren winemaker Danelle Conradie. “The Christina range is a vineyard-specific range of wines from vineyards that we have identified over the years, and we keep the grapes strictly separate in our cellar.”

No visit to Stellies is complete without stopping at Spier. We kicked off our visit with a kids grape juice tasting, which made my boy feel very special (while we enjoyed a wine tasting).

Spier has such a wide selection of wines and tastings that it’s easy to find something suitable to your taste. Lunch at Eight Restaurant was exceptional, from the food to the service. Like the infinity symbol of the restaurant, Eight is living out its ethos of being farm-to-table and keeping things in balance and going full circle.

My husband said the pork belly was out of this world, and my gnocchi was delicious and moreish.

Highlight: Appreciating the artworks in the restaurant made with recycled materials, like the newspaper tapestry and milk-bottle light shades, and tasting the Spier MCC.

That small-batch approach carries through to the individually numbered bottles, while the use of new 300L oak barrels for barrel-matured wines promises better ageing potential.

More interesting, though, is the single-vineyard origin of the wines.

“The Shiraz and Cabernet come from vineyards with deep calcareous clay soils,” says Danelle. “They were planted on a site where the grapes get optimum sunshine for ripening, and a well-drained slope so we can manipulate water and control stress and berry size for excellent colour and fruit extraction.”

The Chardonnay comes from a vineyard rich in limestone, bringing a mouthful

of citrus zestiness balanced by toasty oak notes from fermentation and five months’ maturation in new French oak barrels. It’ll be at its best after three or four years, as “the wines in the Christina range are made to be cellared for a few years before opening”, adds Danelle. Perhaps the only exception is the Sauvignon Blanc – made from Darling grapes – which can be enjoyed immediately while young and fresh.

With summer on the horizon, another standout is the non-vintage Christina Méthode Cap Classique.

Although dominated by Chardonnay for freshness, a dollop of Pinot Noir adds some weight to a deliciously balanced bubbly. No surprise it picked up a bronze medal at the 2016 Amorim Cap Classique Challenge.

While Four Cousins and Tangled Tree have their place around the braai and out on a picnic, for something a little more serious, the revamped Christina range is worth a look and a taste.

Holiday homes Want to know what’s happening in the holiday home property market?

eighbourhood chats with Samuel Seeff, chairman, Seeff, about the latest trends in holiday homes in South Africa. Here’s what is currently happening.

• While the coastal areas tend to be the most popular when it comes to holiday homes, there are many buyers who equally prefer the tranquillity and lifestyle benefits of golf, vineyard and wildlife estates.

• Coastal holiday home buying tends to pick up as the warmer summer months start setting in.

• The holiday buying season tends to span from around

October to April each year, with the November to January period particularly busy for estate agents who operate in the secondary markets.

• This is a time when holidaymakers, both locals and foreigners, descend on the various holiday hot spots – from the KZN North Coast, to the Eastern Cape, Garden Route, the Southern and Western Cape and, of course, Cape Town, now the busiest holiday city on the African continent and the wealthiest holiday home destination in the country.

• Message to sellers: the summer is a great time to

list your property, preferably long before the onset of the November/December season. Also ensure that your mandate lasts at least until the end of April as buyers often look around over the November/December to end January period, while the offers tend to follow from about February onwards.

• Message to buyers: given the economic volatility, buyers should not invest lightly. Think carefully about the current economic climate and how your finances and personal budgets might be impacted if the economic climate deteriorates and interest rates rise further.

• The cost of owning a second home is a vital consideration.

Bear in mind that it is not just the actual cost of the property and/or bond, but also management of the property during your absences, security, maintenance and cleaning.

• Don’t assume you will always have tenants. Holiday rentals tend to be highly seasonal and winter periods can be long, lean, empty periods.

• Holiday/second homes as investments also need careful consideration. As we have seen this year, outside of the Cape, the average price growth is down to below the 5% to 6% mark.

ichael Zahariev, co-founder, B Online, tells us about the business’s web development projects and the new HiCarByeCar online, car-selling platform.

Q: How did your business start?

A: My partner, Luka Calitz, and I started B Online as an alternative to our part-time jobs as waiters while we were studying. Initially a social media management company for small businesses, we quickly found this area oversaturated. There was, however, a keen demand for professionally designed websites and general online marketing. Working from our apartment, we kept our costs low and established our brand as a great value service, adding new skills with each project.

By the time we graduated, we had

over 50 clients, including some large international brands.

Q: Why did you choose this area for your business?

A: Ready to move the business to its own space, we found the shared offices at The Woodstock Exchange gave the most value for money. We were also attracted to its start-up vibe. After four months, our team had six members and the shared office space no longer made financial sense.

Q: How did you find your premises?

A: We were already in the building, so we asked the building managers if they had any space available.

Luckily someone had just given notice that morning, so space was immediately available once we had submitted our proposal as to why we were a good fit for the building. Being a digital agency with great creative talent, this was luckily not too difficult to justify. Now at 18 team members and still growing, we are on a waiting list for a larger space within the Exchange.

Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business?

A: A s a young and innovative tech company the Exchange is a perfect fit. Our team members love the freedom of playing pool or foosball during their off time and I love the convenience of having a hairdresser and multiple food outlets in the same building. It’s great for our clients to walk into a building which has a clear focus on design

and art in a fresh and modern way.

Woodstock is ideally situated for clients from all over Cape Town.

Q: Who are your neighbours?

A: A VoIP provider, an illustration agency, a production company, and a digital services provider.

Q: What are the rental prices like in this area?

A: B Online is rapidly expanding as we take on much larger web development and cloud application development projects. We are also looking to assist other start-ups with a proven concept with funding and tech development support.

Q: What is your most popular product?

A: O ur most successful product is HiCarByeCar (hicarbyecar.com), a platform which allows users to easily get quotes on their car when looking to sell to dealerships.

Within three months we had over 1,000 car sellers use our platform to sell their cars and 17 active dealerships using our platform to source stock in Joburg by making offers on sellers’ cars.

… a farm in the Karoo “Ours is a story of hope endurance and persistence. It started in a very small town of Lecce In Italy, which has earned the nickname “Florence of the South.”

Coming from a middle class family, we were brought up in the restaurant business, but l took another career path, law. The dry, harsh conditions of the Karoo are actually ideal for the production of excellent wines. The summers are very hot and dry, while winters can hit major lows. We only save the best range of wines produced here because of the extremely varied unique climate, and includes many wonderful dessert and fortified wines.

Ours is a haven, for holiday enthusiasts, come experience it.

here are old homes and then there are heritage homes, the latter being strictly protected.

Having said that, there are numerous urban legends about those who purchase heritage buildings on prime land, allow them to stand empty and literally fall apart until there’s little left to restore, and they’re then ripe for demolition. Mission accomplished.

Of course, just because a building is over 60 years old, doesn’t mean it’s necessarily of heritage value and needs protecting. “Permission will be granted when the building has lost heritage value through previous insensitive alterations carried out before the heritage legislation required prior approval from the Heritage Authority.”

In response to that, Ros Devereux, AMAFA (KwaZulu-Natal’s heritage organisation), says yesterday’s structures were built to a higher standard than current ones, and take some time to deteriorate to the level where they’re beyond repair.

But take care if you buy a property with a neglected building on it with no intention to restore it. Check out its heritage status – find the contact details and requirements on your city/province’s heritage website.

“The heritage legislation allows authorities to consider the demolition of a structure listed in the Heritage Register, if it can be proven the building is beyond economical repair.

Few applicants are able to do so, and owners have a duty to maintain their properties to habitable standard.

Applicants who have neglected their buildings generally find it very difficult to get approval to demolish.

If they demolish without approval, they will be required to reinstate it if it has high heritage value. Alternatively a moratorium on the development of the site can be imposed if it is agreed that the building cannot be rebuilt.”

All structures over 60 years of age require written permission from the Heritage Authority for their alteration, addition to or demolition.

The Heritage Authority is usually the Provincial Heritage Resources Authority (sahra.org.za).

“Grade III or Grade II Heritage Resources that are neglected to a point where it is feared that they may be lost altogether could be expropriated by the Heritage Authority.

When demolition is allowed, the Heritage Authority may require that the design of the replacement building takes the neighbouring buildings into account. But where there is no strong heritage context, the design of the building is up to the municipal elevations control officials to ensure that the new building fits in with the city’s sense of place. This would not necessarily preclude the construction of structures built in a ‘modern’ style.”

To restore a heritage building, you need to get advice from an architectural professional with heritage experience (contact your local architects’ institute for contacts).

There are also a number of internet sites that provide good advice on restoring a heritage building.

T

he Southern Suburbs may not be the ideal choice for tourists who want the urban vibe, or want to walk everywhere and sample the night life. However, the area has a lot to offer visitors wanting a more peaceful stay and to live like a local.

The area is also within easy driving distance of all Cape Town’s attractions – from Table Mountain, to the beaches and the winelands. Imagine luxurious homes with swimming pools in Constantia that are close to historic wine estates and fine dining hotspots such as award-winning La Colombe.

Then there are the Victorian cottages in picturesque Newlands, which has a forest to walk in and Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden nearby – this is Cape Town living at its most relaxed. The sights and the bustle of the city centre and the V&A Waterfront are only a short drive away, and in the other direction are the beaches and charming coves of the False Bay coastline below wild mountain slopes.

The warmer waters of the Indian Ocean are one reason that the False Bay side of the mountain has a seaside holiday feel. Its beaches and sea pools are the place to surf and swim for locals escaping the colder Atlantic Ocean waves. The small seaside suburbs also make an ideal base for visitors, whether in winter for whale watching or in summer for family activities.

Kalk Bay is a favourite spot with a harbour and charming small shops and cafes. The St James tidal pool is one of the best, and Simon’s Town with its historic naval base also offers wreck and reef diving and sport fishing charters. Boulders Beach with its resident penguins is not to be missed and there are numerous walking trails – from the coastal Muizenberg Catwalk to the hiking trails of Cape Point Nature Reserve.

Adding a dash of culture with the various art galleries and museums, the area is a holiday destination that appeals to the whole family.

Agent commentary Q: What attracts visitors to rent in this area?

A: The Southern Suburbs and False Bay are fast becoming holiday favourites, particularly with the increased accommodation available as owners choose to rent out their personal homes over peak times. False Bay has the same drawcards as the Atlantic Seaboard: topclass restaurants, beachfront accommodation and local events catering for visitors. It also has the advantage of being less busy than typical tourist destinations such as Camps Bay, so traffic isn’t as bad and you’re more likely to get a table when going out to eat. The warmer temperatures of the Indian Ocean are also great for families with kids who are keen to swim or surf.

Q: What types of properties are most in demand for holiday rentals?
