pennie scott WHITE smoke swirled in the light breeze as 300 people quietly occupied the chairs and children sat cross-legged on the grass. The distinctive aroma of smouldering eucalyptus permeated the area where a large, granite rock was installed in a small garden of endemic plants. This was the prelude to a ceremony – by children now elders, and non-Aboriginals to hear the words of memories – and imagine. The images and memories we have of children, and as children tend to be of carefree days exploring, running, playing
hide-and-seek with friends and full trust in the world around. Family – parents, aunts and uncles, sisters and brothers form the structure of life and security. This is so in every culture and society. If this is violated or radically altered, the effects are life-changing and frequently life-long. Such is the case for thousands of Aboriginal children, now elders if they have lived this long, who were stolen from their families by government decree until 1965. National Sorry Day is an annual event which has been held in Australia

on 26 May since 1998 to remember and commemorate the mistreatment of our country’s Aboriginal People. Auntie Isabel Reid was one of those children and has been campaigning for a memorial for many years, and, last Friday, 23 May, she unveiled a plaque within the granite rock at Wollundry Lagoon. Her words tell her story, which was similar for thousands of Aboriginal children across Australia. and commitment to acknowledge the true history of Australia and the pain we have suffered as Wiradjuri people. Establishing this Sorry Day Rock helps all of us – Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal alike – to create a better future, by remembering what happened in the past. The Sorry Day Rock is from Wiradjuri land. This location was especially chosen.
