Chatleys Menswear Relocates to a New Showroom in Bury Town centre

Whitefield business man, Richard Newgrosh, established his menswear business 40 years ago on Cheetham Hill Road before moving to a warehouse on Chatley Street selling direct to the public.

From originally stocking a variety of sizes, about 25 years ago Richard decide to specialise in big sizes for menswear from XL to 8XL. After 25 years at Chatley Street, Richard is re-locating the business to the former Alan Garvey plumber’s showroom at the side of Bury Market. The showroom is undergoing an extensive renovation and shop re fit to achieve a bright modern new showroom. Richard proudly enthused, “It’s like

a dream come true for me, as I remember coming in this showroom 40 years ago when I had just bought my first house. I loved the position of the showroom so much that I asked the owner for first refusal if he ever sold it. 40 years later when I found out it became available I put an offer in straight away and fortunately it was accepted.”

“I’m really looking forward to making new friends and relationships with customers who visit our showroom in Bury.

A lot of our staff have been with us over 20 years and we’re famous for our customer service and friendship.”

The new Bury Showroom is planned to open around March 2014.

Leelawadee celebrates it’s first year

A year has passed since Leelawadee Authentic Thai Massage opened its doors.

This family run business was opened by Sukanya, Paul & Mark Manning. It has quickly developed a very good reputation for offering authentic Thai massage and other therapeutic and pampering treatments. This year Leelawadee is planning on opening its steam / spa room for even more indulgence. Sukanya commented, “It’s been a great first year for us. Deep tissue massage is very popular as we have many clients who

Community Star Awards The search is on for Bury’s Community Stars. Six Town Housing has launched its Community Stars Awards to find the unsung heroes of its communities across Bury. The awards will recognise residents who have gone out of their way to improve the lives of others living in their communities – from brightening up their garden to helping make their community a better place to live.

The Bury based organisation is hosting their fourth annual Star Awards in February 2014 and they are calling on you to get nominating. The awards which will take place at the Prestwich Longfield Suite are a chance to recognise those who live, work or volunteer within one of Six Town Housing’s properties / communities.

This year’s categories are Connecting Communities; Good Neighbour Award; Best Community Project; Volunteer of the Year; Best Green / Environmental Initiative; Young Rising Star; Inspirational Individual and Retirement Living Award.

Pupils Bring Christmas Cheer to the Hilton Hotel in Manchester Twenty-two girls from Years 5 and 6 of Bolton School visited the Hilton Hotel in Manchester to put on a special Christmas performance. The girls sang twice over the course of the evening, first with songs from their production of Hosanna Rock, followed by a selection of traditional carols and Christmas songs. The Junior Girls were joined by Senior Boys’ Division band the Parallel Oreos, who also performed two half-hour sets to a very busy Hilton Hotel who’s guests enjoyed the music and the festive atmosphere.

A Letter from the Headmaster and Headmistress of Bolton School January 2014

Dear parents,

Please accept our good wishes for the New Year! We would like to share with you some information about our School in case you are considering Bolton School as an option for your son or daughter at secondary level. We expect to offer 250 places in Year 7 next year across the Girls’ and the Boys’ Division. Entry to the school is selective but it will be well within reach of any Year 6 boy or girl who regularly achieves at Level 4b-5c or above in their Maths and English.

In 2014 the Entrance Testing Day is on Thursday January 16th. Boys and girls come in to School to take papers in Maths and English as well as Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning. We aim to put them at their ease on this day. Later, children are invited in for an interview in School and, again, the emphasis is on helping them feel at home.

Of the 250 places, up to a fifth are offered with bursarial support. Our bursaries are awarded for academic merit to those boys and girls who achieve the highest marks in our Entrance Testing Day and whose family income is such that they require financial support to attend our School. A substantial number of bursary places are offered at 100%, meaning that a child’s education (including school lunch) is entirely free of charge for their time at Bolton School.

Demand for bursaries is extremely high but, if your son or daughter has demonstrated a particularly good level of ability (Level 5b or above in their English and Maths scores), then it may well be worthwhile their trying the Entrance Examination.

We know that choosing a secondary school is a crucial decision for any child and his or her parents. We believe that the selective environment at Bolton School is one in which bright, interested children can really flourish academically. They also have a huge range of exciting extra curricular opportunities on offer, with sport, drama, music and outdoor pursuits playing a very important role in school life.

If you would like to see the School on a working day, please contact reception on 01204 840201 to be put in touch with the appropriate person in Boys’ or Girls’ Division. We will be happy to offer you and your son or daughter a tour of the School. If you would prefer to come with other families, this year we will be holding Open Doors’ events on Friday 20 June 2014. You will be given guided tours whilst girls and boys (Years 5 and 6) can sample some taster lessons. Another chance to visit school is the Discovery Day for Year 5 girls, which offers a chance for girls to engage in some fun but challenging activities across various departments and for them and their parents to learn more about the school. This year it will take place at 4.30pm on Thursday 3 July 2014.

This has been an exciting time for the Foundation. We have enjoyed record examination success at both GCSE and A Level and we have seen a substantial project come to fruition in the building of the new Sixth Form Centre at the heart of the Senior Boys’ and Girls’ Schools. Here, the boys and girls share a recreational floor (with a café and relaxation areas) as well as a Study Centre. Sixth Form lessons continue to be taught in single-sex classes, however, meaning that we offer ‘The Best of Both Worlds’ for children and young people up to the age of 18.

A BEGINNERS GUIDE:

No garden can have too much compost and rich, fertile soil is the key to great vegetables and plants. In these days of fortnightly bin collections (and the threat of slop buckets for our kitchens) why leave kitchen waste to fester in your wheelie bin when it can be put to good use?

Find a corner somewhere in the garden to start a compost heap or, if space is limited, many councils offer bins for the purpose at reasonable prices. If building your own bin, it’s best to put it on a soil base which will attract worms to start work on the heap. You could use old planks of wood or chicken wire supported by posts in each corner. This works well as it is important that air can get in to help the process.

You need a good mixture of material to make good compost. If you just put in grass cuttings you’ll end up with a foul, soggy mess so they should be mixed with shredded newspaper, pruning clippings (not the really woody stems) and even cardboard. Annual weeds can go in as long as they haven’t gone to seed but avoid perennial weeds like dandelions as even the smallest piece of root will produce another plant. Almost all vegetable waste from the kitchen can be used, but avoid meat, fish and cooked food as these may attract rats etc. Use

crushed eggshells, used teabags, used kitchen towels and fruit and vegetable peelings. Keep the mixture damp.

The aim is to end up with something that is dark, crumbly and sweet smelling and alive with worms. If you wanted to hurry up the process, you can buy accelerants from hardware shops and garden centres but a cheaper and just as efficient method involves collecting urine, diluting it with water and wetting the heap with it. Well, what do you imagine our ancestors used?

SEAT Alhambra People carriers just aren’t sexy. That’s a fact.

But SEAT’s Alhambra is a perennially popular one – for a very good reason.

As an authentic Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV), the almighty Alhambra’s adaptability fits just as well to family necessities as it does to the needs of the mile-munching business driver.

The load area is charitable, too. When configured as a five-seater the Alhambra has 885 litres of luggage space available, which swells to a vast maximum of 2,297 litres if only the front two seats are in use. In other words, this car could help clear out a large swathe of a white goods department!

The sizable SEAT’s sporting spirit and driving enjoyment certainly go hand-in-hand with common sense and originality. And thanks to its unexpectedly lively handling and hi-tech equipment, you can look forward to every mile behind the wheel. With a combined fuel consumption figure of around 50 mpg, the Alhambra SE 2.0 TDI CR Ecomotive 140 PS won’t rob you at the pumps either.

Aesthetically, the MPV has an undeniably broad, powerful presence, but its slightly overstuffed looks won’t be to everyone’s taste. Beneath its so-so skin, the Alhambra’s TDI engine, on test here, generates 138bhp. It produces good, low down pulling power for such a large vehicle, and efficiency measures such as a Start-Stop system and brake energy recovery technology come as standard.

The present incarnation of the motor, launched in late 2010, is longer than its forerunner - and wider. There’s plenty of breathing space for adults to sit happily, even in the third row of fold-away seats, whilst the big sliding doors allow fantastically easy access.

The stock safety equipment is, like much of the Alhambra, impressive. It involves seven airbags, including a driver-side knee airbag, and electric child locks on the rear doors.
