Purple Flags will continue to fly proudly in Bury over official recognition of the town’s nighttime economy.

Bury has been successful in securing Purple Flag status for a second year following an assessment by the ATCM (Association of Town Centre Management) which manages the UKwide scheme.

The Purple Flag is the equivalent of the Green Flag for parks, and recognises the quality of a town’s evening and night-time offer.

Since Bury won Purple Flag status in 2015, a promotional campaign has been aimed at raising awareness of its attractions: from restaurants, cinema, leisure, bowling to theatre, food and drink plus an ongoing programme of events.

Councillor Sandra Walmsley, cabinet member for resource and regulation, said: “This is great news for Bury town centre and confirms that Bury continues to be ‘on the up’ with an ever expanding offer for both day and night time visitors. Bury remains the only town centre across Greater Manchester to achieve this prestigious accreditation and we aim to continue working with our partners and town centre venues to maintain that status, while working hard to build on our evening offer to provide a safe and enjoyable night out. We want to encourage an even wider range of evening and night-time businesses to get involved, spread the word and support Purple Flag.”

Arnold Wilcox-Wood, centre director for The Rock, said: “Bury’s continued accreditation is the result of an ongoing partnership and commitment between the council, Greater Manchester Police, businesses, venues and all key agencies in our night-time economy. Dozens of rail enthusiasts came to Bury see the most iconic train in the world, the Flying Scotsman, return to the tracks on Friday 8th January.

After a ten year and £4.2 million restoration, the locomotive went full steam ahead from the Bolton Street Station in Bury town centre along the East Lancashire Railway Heritage line for this historic test run.

The test was a success and thousands of train lovers were able to enjoy a ride on carriages pulled by the Flying Scotsman over the weekend.

After shuttling up and down the East Lancashire Railway, the locomotive will now begin a two-year tour of Britain as a working museum exhibit.

BROTHERS OPEN NEW SPORTSWEAR STORE

An invited audience of local football and sporting clubs were on hand in Bury on 11th January to see CEO of Macron, Gianluca Pavanello, cut the ribbon to officially launch the latest Macron Store.

Richard Gough, the Commercial Director at Bolton Wanderers presented Macron with a signed Bolton Wanderers shirt to commemorate the opening.

Macron Store Manchester, based in Bury, is the first Macron Store in the North West, with over 20 Macron brand stores currently in the UK. It has been opened by local brothers Peter and Craig Hickford, both who have been involved in local grassroots football in both a playing and coaching capacity for over 20 years and are using this experience combined with their business degrees to start this venture.

MARKET TRADERS RALLY ROUND FOR LOCAL FLOOD VICTIMS

Big-hearted traders on Bury Market rallied round to help those worst affected by the Boxing Day floods.

They got together a huge collection of fruit, vegetables, meat, bread and confectionery.

The food was donated to the volunteer centre at Radcliffe Girls & Boys Club where meals were made and distributed to the many families in the area who were without power and essential services.

PANCAKES, PANCAKES, PANCAKES Pancake Recipe Why not add...

INGREDIENTS • 110g plain flour, sifted • Pinch of salt • 2 eggs • 200ml milk mixed with 75ml water • 50g butter

1. Sift the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl.

Now make a well in the centre of the flour and break the eggs into it. Begin whisking the eggs incorporating any bits of flour from around the edge of the bowl as you do so.

2. Next gradually add small quantities of the milk and water mixture, still whisking. When all the liquid has been added, whisk once more until the batter is smooth, with the consistency of thin cream. Now melt the 50g of butter in a pan.

Spoon 2 tbsp of it into the batter and whisk it in, then pour the rest into a bowl and use it to lubricate the pan, using a wodge of kitchen paper to smear it round before you make each pancake.

3. Now get the pan really hot, turn the heat down to medium. To start with, do a test pancake to see if you’re using the correct amount of batter. 2 tbsp is about right for an 18cm pan. It’s also helpful if you spoon the batter into a ladle so it can be poured into the hot pan in one go. As soon as the batter hits the hot pan, tip it around from side to side to get the base evenly coated with batter. It should take only half a minute or so to cook; you can lift the edge with a palette knife to see if it’s tinged gold as it should be. MIKE CONNOLLY TO BE NEXT MAYOR OF BURY

East ward councillor Mike Connolly has been proposed as the next Mayor of Bury for the year 2016/17. Cllr Connolly has been leader of the council since 2011, and will take over the chains of office from fellow East councillor Stella Smith.

The decision was made by councillors at

Wednesday’s (13 Jan) cabinet meeting, and will be ratified at the council’s annual meeting in May. Cllr Connolly (aged 64) is a former head teacher and has represented East ward since 1994.

He will stand down as council leader once he becomes mayor, and his partner Ian Hargreaves will be the mayor’s consort.

He has served in nearly all senior positions on Bury Council, and has several important regional roles including being the Greater Manchester Combined Authority’s lead on police and crime matters and civil contingencies. He also serves on the Local Government Association’s safer and secure communities board.

“As a Bury man born and bred, it’s a huge honour to be chosen to become mayor of my hometown,” he said. “Bury is a fantastic borough and I’m looking forward immensely to being its ‘ambassador’. I will do everything in my power to live up to the responsibility that has been placed in me.”

Sky Sports Box Office will show the eagerly anticipated super-bantamweight unification World Title fight between two of Britain’s undefeated champions, Bury’s Scott Quigg and Belfast’s Carl Frampton.

Tickets sold out in a matter of minutes for the must-see event at the Manchester Arena on Saturday February 27. Someone’s perfect record will go as the long-awaited clash between Quigg the WBA champion and Frampton the IBF belt holder will finally determine the number one domestic boxer in the division.

Belfast born Frampton, has been vocal about the massive support he will be bringing from Northern Ireland. His popularity there will ensure a strong Irish contingent in the crowd making for an electric atmosphere but Scott will be strongly supported by the passionate fans from Bury and Manchester.

The Little Sweet Shop is a ‘10p mix’ hit!

Radcliffe market traders, Beth and David Tremayne started their sweet shop 4 years ago when they were looking for a business that would fit around homeschooling their 11 year old son, Josiah.

Having looked at various businesses the couple decided on launching The Little Sweet Shop.

“I was inspired to enter into the confectionary business because of a little treasure of a shop that I used to visit as a small girl, called Hill Stores. It still holds lovely memories of 10p mix ups - something we’ve tried to re create in our shop.” said Beth.

Since opening on Radcliffe Market, the couple have built up a loyal customer base who often suggest different types of sweets they’d like.

“We really appreciate our regular visitors and always listen to what they’d like us to stock. We’ve recently introduced ice cream from Fredericks which has been a great hit.”

The couple would like to expand further, providing even more variety on the stall and also sell online.

“We’re also excited that we’re about to start selling chocolate from the award winning Slattery Patissier & Chocolatiers.”

The future looks bright for this family business, and although the ‘10p mix’ might cost a little more these days, it’s definitely worth treating yourself!

NEW LIFE FOR OLD RAILWAYS

A local beauty queen is helping to raise thousands of pounds for the British Heart Foundation by taking part in a unique pageant.

Claire Renton, 31 from Prestwich , was confirmed as a finalist for the Miss Charity Heart this month and will travel to Cannock on February 21st to compete. All proceeds from the competition will go directly to the British Heart Foundation.

Claire has been given the title Miss Charity Heart Manchester 2015/2016. She said: “I entered because I enjoy pageants, I also enjoy raising money for charity. Last year I raised over £1000 for various charities.

The Miss Charity Heart pageant will see Claire take part in a number of rounds including Round 1; Have a Heart Round. where Contestants will wear something Red or something with a Red Heart pattern. Red Dress, Red Top, Heart Patterned.

Round 2; Charity Catwalk Challenge. This outfit must have been purchased from preferably a BHF charity shop but any charity shop will be accepted. The outfit can be anything – fashion, formal, wacky, creative.

Round 3; My time to Shine Round. This is the one we’ve all been waiting for – formal evening wear – the glitz & glam round. Cocktail, Evening, Prom or Pageant gowns. Contestants will be interviewed briefly as they come off the catwalk.

Work has started to convert part of the old Bury to Bolton Railway line into a path for walkers, cyclists and horse riders.

The section from Bradley Lane to Launceston Road was built a few years ago and the current work will extend it eastwards to Moss Shaw. At this point it will connect with the new housing development under construction off Salisbury Road and then via Wilton Lane to Ainsworth Road. So, once the housing development is complete, there will be a continuous route from Bolton town centre to Radcliffe.

Under the same contract, work will start to improve the Radcliffe end of the Outwood Trail.

The vandalised handrail on the ramp up to Outwood Viaduct will be removed, drainage will be improved and vegetation will be cut back.

Together the two jobs will cost £135,000 and are being funded by the Greater Manchester Growth Fund with the aim of encouraging walking and cycling.

HOUSING PARTNERS PROVIDE 18 FAMILY HOMES IN PRESTWICH

The final tenants have just moved into the second new housing development on the site of the former Tulle Court in Prestwich.

The new development, by Great Places Housing Group, comprises 18 three-bedroom houses for ‘affordable rent’. It complements previous schemes carried out by Great Places in the area - the refurbishment of the retained block of the original Tulle Court, and the new older person’s bungalows on the former St Mary’s Court site.

The houses have been built in materials sympathetic to the surrounding properties, in particular those in the conservation area on Church Lane.

One of the tenants delighted with her new property is Juliette Leighton, who moved into Tulle Court in October with her three children from an over-crowded flat in Prestwich.

Juliette said she loves her new home and is very happy with its quiet location and good neighbours. She thanked the builders and also her family and friends who helped her furnish it.

Peter Bojar, director of development at Great Places Housing Group, said: “We have worked closely with our partners at Bury Council to complete the development so we can provide much-needed homes in the area. Live music, theatre and arts venue, The Met in Bury, is to undergo a £4.6 million refurbishment starting this March 2016 to meet growing audience demand, thanks to a £3.1 million capital investment from Arts Council England and supporting contributions from Bury Council and other benefactors.

The Met is one of the North’s most successful entertainment venues and the investment will enable it to increase its capacity and attract even more national talent to perform in the town.

The Met is currently ranked number 39 in the PRS Top 100 Venues in the UK and regularly attracts audiences of more than 45,000, some of which will have first seen Steve Coogan, Eddie Izzard, Johnny Vegas, Caroline Aherne and Lee Evans before they became big names; along with a legendary performance from Joy Division and of course Elbow.

It is also one of Bury’s much-loved heritage buildings and in need of renovation. Bury Metropolitan Arts Association (BMAA), the charity that runs the Met, has spent the last four years successfully applying for and raising money towards securing funds for this redevelopment project.

The capital investment will restore the building’s heritage features and transform the interior to increase capacity and improve facilities for everyone who uses the venue. It will also enable The Met to attract more high profile artists and theatre productions, thanks to new and improved studio and theatre spaces, a new bar area, workshop spaces, new dressing rooms and a new more accessible lift in the centre of the building.

Arts Council England has provided the greatest contribution, investing £3.1 million in the capital

development programme. Financial support has also come from Bury Council, Garfield Weston Foundation, Oglesby Foundation, Monument Trust, Granada Foundation, Manchester Guardian as well as public donations and individual giving.

David Agnew, artistic director of The Met, has led the capital project since 2011. He said: “The building is in dire need of investment but this project is about more than just the building. In the last 5 years we have grown to offer a programme of festivals, and Edwin Street Recording Studio, alongside regular international touring artists and weekly workshops. Our partners and audiences are supporting the work we’ve been carrying out in Bury and plan to continue with into the future.

“Bury’s arts and culture is a huge part of its success and we are delighted to have this investment to continue with a programme that is both relevant to local communities and brings artists and audiences into Bury. “ Alison Clark, Director North, Arts Council England, said: “We very pleased to invest in Bury Met’s exciting renovation plans which will enable it to attract more high profile artists and productions to the town benefitting both local and visiting audiences.”

Councillor Paddy Heneghan, Bury Council’s cabinet member for children, families and culture, said: “We are absolutely delighted that the Arts Council has chosen to make such a significant investment in Bury’s major arts venue. The council is also pleased to be able to add its own financial support to this excellent scheme. I have no doubt that a more customer friendly arts centre will undoubtedly increase the cultural offer of the Borough, enhancing its reputation and improving even more the attractiveness of Bury town centre as a visitor destination.

“The proposed refurbishment will also significantly improve one of Bury’s most important historical buildings, making it more sustainable for the future” The Met welcomes over 45,000 people a year to Bury through its events, recording studio and festivals programme including Ramsbottom Festival and Homegrown festivals. Work will commence on site from March 2016 and the project is expected to be completed by November of 2016.

ALL NEW JAGUAR XF The first words out of my mouth when I handed my all-new Jaguar XF demonstrator keys back at Pamplona Airport were “I’m going to miss that motor”. And there’s a reason for that: the fresh British saloon I had on test in Spain made my life far more relaxing than I had envisaged.

Now, let me make it clear; the two days I had with the XF involved traversing snaking roads high into the Pyrenees, hammering along fast stretches of motorway and negotiating narrow urban streets. The part of northern Spain I was in involves rural transport, too – and, with that, the odd wandering herd of cows, goats and sheep.

My point is that, whether driving at 70mph or sat still waiting for a shamble of sheep to move, the XF looks after you. The soft leather seats, the hushed cabin, the excellent brakes and, even the sound system, make you feel as though a palace has been given four wheels.

When there is a chance to bury your right foot into the deep carpet, the creamy smooth powertrain of the rear wheel drive Jaguar XF 380PS S, on test here, pulls the scenery by the side of your head briskly. It is done in such an

uncomplicated way that the speedo needle can nudge three figures all too easily.

Pure performance aside, handling is stunningly good. Indeed, the 2016 XF offers the fun already available from the Jaguar XJ, mainly due to its precise steering, lack of body roll and excellent traction.

This was demonstrated perfectly when we stopped off for a bit of cheeky track driving at the Circuito de Navarra. This modern motorsport race track, near Los Arcos, is a 3.933 km permanent road course that hosts the Superleague Formula series and the FIA GT1 World Championship. Under expert instruction I managed to get the XF to behave like the beast it can be. The car will hold on to the surface like Velcro, only stepping out when pushed to levels you’d never attempt on a public highway. Jaguar’s PR team did a good job by really showing us that the new XF isn’t just a mile muncher – it’s a machine offering pure dynamism. In other words, it truly is a driver’s car.

The specification levels of the new XF are lavish. The cabin is a seamless blend of contemporary luxury materials and finishes,

traditional Jaguar craftsmanship and state-of-the art tech, with features such as a reconfigurable 12.3-inch TFT instrument cluster, laser head-up display and an InControl Touch Pro premium infotainment system.

What’s more, stereo camera technology enables autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning and lane-keep assist systems.

Adaptive Cruise Control with Queue Assist takes the stress out of motorway driving in stop-go traffic by tracking the vehicle in front, at a safe distance.

With its plethora of talents and refreshed, more modern exterior, the XF is soon etched on your mind. From a distance, there are slight hints of Audi at the rear, but the car doesn’t look as much like the other premium executive saloons you see double-parked outside Michelin-starred restaurants in Chelsea or in City of London corporate car parks In summary, this new XF is loaded with a host of awesome tech, making the driving experience as luxurious and as exciting as possible. The Jaguar’s cabin is sophisticated and sturdily built and the car is rapid, whichever model you opt for. Indeed, the Jaguar XF 380PS S model, driven for this review, is as fast as you are ever likely to need.

Some folks drive a lot for various reasons be it business or personal, here a few tip to help cut the cost of travel: FREE TANK OF FUEL VIA EXTREME COUPONING TRICK If you’re planning a big spend at any one of 50+ retailers (including House of Fraser, Homebase and PC World), buy the gift card in Morrisons and you get 1p/litre off fuel per £10 spend. So £100 gets 10p off and £1,000ish gets a free tank. The real trick isn’t to use them as gifts, but that if you’re planning a big purchase in that store anyway, first pop into Morrisons and buy the gift card. Then a few days later, once it’s active, go and use it to buy your planned purchase, giving you a potentially whopping petrol discount.

TURN YOUR HEATING DOWN, BUT NOT OFF IF YOU’RE GOING AWAY If it gets cold, no heating risks burst pipes.

So much so that some insurers won’t cover you for damage if your home’s unoccupied for more than five days and you turned the heating off. The rule of thumb is keep it to a minimum 14 degrees.

Buy a £52 ticket from Manchester to Cheltenham Spa, then a £58 one from there to Cornwall and the total’s £110. That’s the same train, the same time – possibly even the same seat.

GET A YEAR’S BREAKDOWN COVER FOR £17 If your car has had trouble during the winter season, it can be costly to pay it back in the Spring. Thankfully, if you know what you’re doing you can get super cheap cover. There are four things you need to know: - If you’re renewing, haggle. 84% of AA and 76% of RAC customer who tried reported success. - If you’re new then for basic cover use a cashback site. A standard RAC policy is £28 online and an AA policy £35, but sites like Topcashback.co.uk and Quidco.com give around £10-£15 back so the effective cost to you is £18ish. This usually works, though do note the cashback isn’t 100% guaranteed. - If you have Tesco clubcard points you can swap them in for RAC cover, so £16 of vouchers gives you basic breakdown. - For full service, Autoaidbreakdown.co.uk is a pay and reclaim polcy for £42/year, which covers you and your spouse for home start, breakdown and onward travel. A local delivery firm is sent out, and you pay then send in receipts to get the cost back.

Founded in June 2012 Bolton Cancer Voices is an inspirational, welcoming Choir open to anyone who has received a cancer diagnosis of any type at any time. The Choir provides a positive, motivational and diversionary environment where members have fun, enjoy the challenges and exhilaration of performing and have a focus aside from their illness. We are a community Choir like any other with a full programme of appearances and activities together with many dreams and aspirations!

Bury FC Sky Bet League One - 2015/16 Season

In the last couple of months, a loss of form since the fantastic early season results has seen the Shakers slip down from a comfortable play off position to below mid-table. However, as we know only too well things can change very quickly in football. A brilliant away win in the FA Cup replay (4-2 on penalties) at League One side Bradford (and with only 10 men for 90 minutes!) has given Bury with a timely boost - in confidence and financially. Bury will now face Hull City at Gigg Lane in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup on Saturday 30th January, 3pm kick-off.

Following the cup heroics a great 1 - 0 away win over local rivals Oldham has helped to steady the ship in the league. So here's to another big Cup victory on the 30th! Come on you Shakers!
