With the George Square Christmas Lights being switched on in a family fun extravaganza on Sunday 16 November, the city gets ready to enjoy the festive season!

Judy Murray talks to us

about the importance of encouraging your kids to .. get active at a young age.

Do you think it’s important for kids to get into sport at a very young age?

Tell us a little bit about your background and journey into sport.

Of course, and I do think it starts at home.

If kids can develop basic co-ordination skills and a love of activity and movement then it’s so much easier for them to stay healthy later I come from a very sporty family and my on in life because it becomes a way of life brothers and I grew up with parents who let to them. Why do you think parents should encourage their kids to take up a sport?

When I had my kids I was still playing tennis for Scotland and my county. When we moved from Glasgow to Dunblane just before Andy was born our house was about 500 metres from the tennis club, so I joined the club and got into coaching and for me that was just about keeping myself fit and also trying to play to a good standard. With two small kids it meant if I was going to the tennis club to work with other people’s children, the deal was their mums had to look after Jamie and Andy in the clubhouse or in the park!

It’s down to the parents to introduce their children to hobbies, and sport is just one kind of hobby. Usually kids aged between 8 and 10 start to decide for themselves what they enjoy or want to stick at, but up to that point it’s important to try lots of different things. My kids tried lots of sports and ultimately Andy became a very good tennis player, but he was also a very good footballer and when he was 14 he had to make a choice between tennis and football. Jamie was an extremely good golfer.

He had a 3 handicap when he was 15 or 16, so this goes back to my point about developing good co-ordination skills because it wouldn’t have mattered which sport they had ultimately tried to do, they were well co-ordinated and would have been able to do them pretty well.

What type of support do you think parents should give their kids if they play sport?

If your child goes into a sport that you maybe don’t know anything about – which happened to me when the boys tried rugby or golf, I tried to understand enough about those sports by going along and listening to what the coach was telling the kids so that I could help them at home. For me it’s about having them understand the importance of trying their hardest and to continually improve. I know from watching many years of junior tennis tournaments that the parents who sit on the sidelines and shake their heads, tut and shout at their kids aren’t helping at all – and kids pick up everything.

Instead be positive and encouraging. I never minded whether my kids won or lost, it was always about the effort. If you try your hardest and lose then the other guy was too good. If you go “Oh well I’m getting beaten, never mind” and give up, that’s unacceptable to me.

Miss Vornic from Saint Paul’s Primary School (Shettleston) tells us about their GLEE CLUB! Where have you performed?

How was your group started?

Saint Paul’s Glee Club was started last October as I felt there were so many musically talented children in our school who could be given an opportunity to showcase their talents. Pupils from Primary 4–7 auditioned for one of thirty places but they were all so good that none could be turned down, resulting in a group of almost fifty children.

Last Christmas we performed at The Forge Shopping Centre in Parkhead, delighting Christmas shoppers with our carol singing.

In June we worked with the National Theatre of Scotland, recording ‘Mother Glasgow’ in a recording studio and performing it as the finale to the Tin Forest Theatre Event in six performances at Reidvale Neighbourhood Centre. We have also performed in school on numerous occasions at the Summer Fair, as well as school assemblies and for important visitors including the Lord Provost and local MSPs. Our most recent performance was our Glee Showcase on the evening of September 16th. We performed fourteen songs and raised lots of money for the Malawi Leaders of Learning charity.

What are your proudest achievements?

We have inspired lots of children in our school to tap into their musical and dance talents and many other Primary 4–7 pupils are now asking about the chance to audition for our Glee Club.

We will be holding more auditions after the October school break in preparation for our Christmas carol singing.

What’s the group’s favourite song to perform?

We love performing a wide range of songs and adding dance moves to the more upbeat ones. Our current favourites include Queen’s ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’, ‘Rule the World’ by Take That and Avicii’s ‘Wake Me Up’.

Tell us something you would like our readers to know about your Glee Club?

All members of our Glee Club are extremely dedicated as well as talented, attending both lunchtime and after-school rehearsals each week. In addition to performing our songs as they were originally sung, our children have used their talents to devise dance moves and adapt the words of songs to make them more appropriate for our Glee Club and our performances. One of our Primary 7 pupils even wrote a rap to sing during the instrumental section of ‘Wake Me Up’.

What tips can you give people who want to get into singing or for those who enjoy singing but think they might not be great at it?

Join a Glee Club or choir and just give it a go!

Our Glee Club is made up of a wide range of talented pupils, some of whom like to take on additional solos and those who prefer singing along with others in the group. It has also been a great way for pupils from different classes to meet new friends.

Reindeer Cookies!

INGREDIENTS • 45g smooth peanut butter • 50g butter, softened • 50g caster sugar • 45g light brown sugar • 1 egg, beaten • 100g plain flour • 10g baking powder • Grated zest from the quarter of 1 orange • 50g unsalted peanuts, chopped • Plain M&M’s • Chocolate covered pretzels METHOD 1 Preheat oven to 180°C/gas 4.

2 In a mixing bowl, cream together the peanut butter, butter, caster sugar and light brown sugar for 4 minutes until well-blended.

3 Add in the beaten egg and mix for 2 minutes.

4 Add the flour, orange zest and baking powder, then mix in the peanuts.

5 Divide the mixture into 20 even-sized balls and place them onto a baking sheet, spacing them well apart. Press each ball lightly with a fork.

6 Pinch the dough at the top corners at the “ears”. Press the dough in the centre where the nose and mouth would be.

7 Bake for 25 minutes until set. Add your chocolate pretzels, red M&M’s nose and brown eyes.

8 Cool on a wire rack.

• 2 tbsp cocoa

• 3 tbsp melted butter or oil • ¼ tsp vanilla (or peppermint) extract • 1 tbsp choc chips • 1 large mug METHOD 1 Add all the dry ingredients to the mug, and mix well.

2 Add the egg.

3 Mix well to avoid any pockets of flour in the corners.

4 Pour in the milk, oil and chocolate chips, and mix well.

5 Add the vanilla extract.

6 Pop your mug into the microwave & zap for 3 minutes on maximum power (1000 watt).

7 Wait until the cake stops rising, and sets in the mug.

8 Leave to cool.
