SWITCH IT UP Look and feel good for summer by swapping some of these unhealthy ingredients…

You Love

Swap For

Benefits

TOAST & BUTTER

WHOLEMEAL TOAST WITH AVOCADO

Avocados are packed with vitamins and minerals, particularly good for skin and hair. There are also around a quarter of the calories in an avocado making it a lighter and healthier snack.

CRISPS

KALE CHIPS

It’s on all the celebrity diets – even the Kardashians are fans! It’s high in nutrients and very low in calories, making it one of the most nutrient dense foods on the planet.

Remove the stalks, spray on some low-cal olive oil and a pinch of salt. Pop in the oven and bake for 5 minutes for a crunchy snack.

FLAVOURED YOGHURT

NATURAL YOGHURT WITH FRUIT Use low fat or fat free yoghurt and fruit with a spoonful of granola.

ICE CREAM

FROZEN BANANA ICE CREAM (made with bananas only) Freeze your banana. Take it out of the freezer and let it thaw slightly, then puree. Add a teaspoon of natural peanut butter for extra flavour if you like!

Natural yoghurt helps keep your digestive system healthy and has less calories than a lot of flavoured ‘dessert-type’ yoghurts.

No milk, cream or sugar, just bananas – which are packed with vitamins and minerals and much lower in fat than a bowl of ice cream!

To play for my country, in front of my family and to pick up a great win was awesome.

What’s a typical day like for you? I usually wake up about 8am, get showered and have breakfast before starting training about 9.15am. Usually we do some weights first before focusing on line-outs in a meeting. Lunch is about 12pm before we have another meeting, do a rugby session out on the pitch and finish around 4pm. Do you have any rituals before a match? Nothing major, but I like listening to music. At the moment I like Omi-Cheerleader. Who has been the biggest inspiration in your career? Kieran Read, the New Zealand forward, was always someone I looked up to and last summer I went on the MacPhail Scholarship and met him. I trained with him a lot, speaking to him a few times as well which was a great experience. He was a massive idol for me growing up.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Get YOUR Tickets! The Warriors are Glasgow’s only professional rugby team and compete in the GUINNESS PRO12 and the European Rugby Champions Cup. They play their home matches at Scotstoun Stadium and tickets are available online at glasgowwarriors.org or by calling 0844 800 3490.

What’s been your most memorable game? The viagogo Autumn Test against Argentina was my first match at BT Murrayfield and an amazing game. To play for my country, in front of my family and to pick up a great win was awesome. Tell us a bit about your diet? I usually eat quite a lot and will kick off the day with some scrambled eggs followed by a bowl of oats. I will then have a protein shake after my weights session and then usually have meat and vegetables for lunch with the team. After training I have a small dinner before having something bigger a few hours later. What advice would you give to a young person hoping to make rugby a career? Watch as much rugby as you can, try and get yourself in a winning team and enjoy it! What do you like to do in your spare time? I enjoy doing a bit of DJ work at some nightclubs, spending time with my girlfriend, cinema, heading out for something to eat and playing some golf.

Who was your last text from and what did it say? From my Mum who was watching the European Rugby Champions Cup semi-final where there was an interview with Jonny Wilkinson and she text me saying ‘I never realised he had a lisp.’ Last film you saw at the cinema? American Sniper. Favourite meal? I like sweet potato, chicken breast and peas. It’s a nice, clean meal. What song gets you up on the dancefloor? Michael Jackson, Thriller. If you weren’t a professional rugby player, what occupation would you choose? I probably would have gone to uni, lost interest and ended up doing a hands-on, manual labour job.

MEET OUR NEW

FASHION EXPERT

Ruth Logan STUDIED: IDEAL JOB:

Fashion Management Garment Design Technologist or Online Social Media Executive

Describe your style

Worst trend in the last year?

Modern, tailored with a splash of 1920s to 1990s (missing out the 80s, I never could pull off shoulder pads, or puffed out skirts). I swear by my flared jeans with a trusty tailored white blazer.

Ripped to the max jeans. I tried to see a point but failed. It looked like someone had set them alight. It just isn’t my style, but for those of you who wear them – aren’t you cold?

Who is your fashion icon?

Can you share any fashion-related tips and tricks you’ve learned?

You couldn’t make me choose between Marilyn Monroe and Victoria Beckham. For guys it would have to be 100% Ryan Gosling. Best trend in the last year? For guys I loved the comeback of the original ‘worn-in’ Chelsea Boots, which are in again this season. Hands down my favourite female trend was the ‘sneaker trend’, allowing us to wear trainers with everything. My feet owe Nike a huge thank you. I always went to uni in my fur jacket and trainers!

Never buy a size too small or too large if they don’t have your size. It either makes you look oversized in a bad way, or you show too much. Remember to try online or order in store. I also recommend investing in a good pair of jeans – from shape to length and colour. You’ll wear them all the time (I promise).

I recommend investing in a good pair of jeans

COOKING CORNER

BANANA & CHOCOLATE GRANOLA BARS INGREDIENTS Use a measuring jug • 1 tsp. butter • 120ml flaked almonds • 360ml cashews, coarsely chopped • 240ml banana chips, chopped • 360ml rolled oats • 360ml Rice Krispies cereal • 240ml honey or brown rice syrup • 60ml Grade B maple syrup

proper tasty!

• 1/2 tsp. salt • 60ml dark chocolate chips or chunks • 1 tsp. vanilla extract

INSTRUCTIONS 01 Preheat the oven to 180 degrees. Spread the almonds and cashews on a sheet of baking paper and toast them in the oven for 6–8 minutes, or until they start to brown a bit. Remove from oven and cool.

02 In the meantime, grease a 9x13 baking dish

with the butter and set aside. Now, mix the oats, rice cereal, banana chips and chocolate chunks in a big bowl. Add the nuts once they’ve cooled.

03 In a small saucepan, heat the syrups, salt

and vanilla extract over medium-high heat, stirring to avoid burning. Once the syrups come to a light boil, continue to cook for an

additional 3–5 minutes until the syrup begins to thicken, then pour it over the oats and nuts. Mix everything together so that the syrup evenly coats everything in the bowl. Your chocolate chunks may melt at this point, but that doesn’t matter – it’ll just make it more chocolatey.

04 While it’s still warm, pour the contents

of the bowl into your prepared baking dish. Using a rubber spatula, pat everything down so it’s nice and compacted. Let it cool to room temperature. You can also put them in the fridge to make cutting easier.

05 Cut into squares.

Coping with grief When someone close to you dies it can be shattering. Martin, 16, lost both his mum and dad. Losing mum

The aftermath

‘12th August 2007 started off as any normal Sunday. Just back from a holiday, I was desperate to see my friends. I kissed mum on the forehead and ran outside.

Following his mum’s death, life was hard. As well as dealing with his grief Martin faced inconceivable challenges.

I was playing in the street when I heard sirens then saw an ambulance stop outside my house. I ran home to a horrifying scene; my mum on the floor while two medics tried to resuscitate her. I ran to find my older sister and we returned home to find she had died of a heart condition that I also have.’

‘I was bullied – threatened, hit and ridiculed because my mum wasn’t there to help me. I didn’t tell anyone – it was hell. Life fell apart, including my relationship with my dad. I became my younger brother’s full time carer. It was too much pressure and six years on I became unwell. It was then I moved in with my sister and began to find peace again.’

REAL-LIFE

The second blow ‘Around Christmas 2013, I learned my dad had terminal lung cancer. He died two months later. I didn’t speak to anyone about it until suddenly the reality of everything hit me and I broke down. With the unforgettable support of friends and family I got through it.’

Moving forward After opening up and facing what he’d been through, Martin began focussing on his future. ‘I found my passion – helping young people. I stood for the Scottish Youth Parliament and joined the Glasgow Youth Council. I wouldn’t be where I am now if it wasn’t for people around me. MSP James Dornan is a support and inspiration – I’m not after his seat yet but I’m ambitious and would like to be where he is one day. Sarah and Donald from Glasgow Life have given me great opportunities.’

If you’re facing loss Martin says: Find your passion and throw yourself into it. • Remember you can still make the person you’ve lost proud. I always keep it in my heart that my mum and dad gave me my hero; my sister, and I know if I work hard they’d be proud. • Finally remember you are NEVER alone; there are lots of groups with other young people like you.

MADE THE grADE? Play the waiting game well No matter what way you look at it, exams can be stressful. From preparing and studying, to sitting the exam itself there are plenty of opportunities to feel overwhelmed. And it doesn’t necessarily stop when you leave the exam hall. Waiting for your results, when you’ve done everything you can to impact them, can be the hardest part of all.

If you find waiting for your exam results starts to get in the way of you enjoying your summer try these tips to help you handle hanging on in the most chilled way you can. • Take a break from social media – avoid getting whipped up into a results-waiting frenzy and take a break from the constant stream of posts and tweets about how nervous everyone is. Aim to limit your time on social media to five minutes three times a day, or give yourself two social media free days a week. • Distract yourself – A sure-fire way to increase your stress and worry levels is to sit indoors dwelling on what’s to come. Don’t fall into this trap and force yourself to get out of the house. Meet friends, go to the cinema, go for a swim, play a sport or look into volunteering or part-time work opportunities. • Enjoy your time of freedom – think back to when you were up to your eyes in revision. You probably spent time dreaming of what you’d do with those long, lazy summer days when the exams are behind you. Now those days are here don’t spend them worrying! Relish this time because before you know it you’ll be on to the next thing and busy with your next year at school, college or university, or looking for a job. For loads of ideas on what you can do with your summer to take your mind off your approaching results, visit:

youngglasgow.org.uk

CAREERS

The results are in: now what? The results you receive will determine the decisions and actions you have to take next. Whether you got what you hoped for, didn’t do quite as well as you’d have liked or missed the mark completely you need to take steps to ensure your future goes in the right direction...

‘I got the results I needed.’ Congratulations! If your results mean you’ve been accepted to the college or university of your choice you can get planning this exciting step into your new life straight away! Even though you got the results you wanted you might still be unclear about what you want to do with them. For advice and information visit Skills Development Scotland’s online careers information and advice service myworldofwork.co.uk

‘I passed but didn’t do as well as I’d hoped.’

‘I failed. I didn’t get the grades I expected.’ Not getting the exam results you wanted can be devastating. But it doesn’t mean the career path you are aiming for is closed to you – far from it. There are many different routes to getting to where you want to be and adults in jobs they love have rarely followed a straightforward path to get there. Skills Development Scotland careers advisers are here to help. Get in touch via their website to find out about all the routes you can take, including resits and alternative education paths.

The good news is you passed, not getting what you were aiming for just means you need to get researching and find out what options are open to you. Contact the university or college you hoped to attend to find out about their clearing deadlines and visit myworldofwork.co.uk for advice.

What’s next? No matter what the results you received were, make sure you reach out to the support networks around you to ensure you make the right decisions for your future. Your family, friends, Skills Development Scotland’s careers advisers, school teachers and college lecturers can provide you with advice and support during this key time in your life.
