The Marshall Commons Voice An evil snowstorm came through Huntington last week, leaving nearly a foot of snow in its wake. To the surprise (and absolute joy) of most students, the snow prompted Marshall to cancel class – all week! What started out as a normal Monday morning, with regularly-scheduled classes, quickly became a day off, followed by another day off Tuesday. Wednesday brought a new storm, leading to a two-hour delay and classes being cancelled after 3.30 on Wednesday. Similarly, extreme cold caused classes to be called off again on Thursday and Friday! During their snow week, Marshall students took full advantage of their free time and the copious amounts. Snowball fights and sledding ensued. Many students risked the roads and tried their luck sledding at Ritter Park – some were even featured in the Herald Dispatch. Other students enjoyed their fun in the snow by making snow angels. Wellman and Haymaker RAs Mary Norton and Kyle Rheud built a snowman in a flowerbed outside of Haymaker, using M&Ms and potatoes for the buttons and smiles (see left). Similarly, First Year RAs brought their residents into the fields outside of the First Year halls and enjoyed some pretty competitive snowball

fights. RAs all around took advantage of the snow and used it as a means to bond with some of their residents, while still having fun. Other students took the opportunity of a week off to catch up on some much needed R&R. Many students slept in and propped their feet up to relax as they binge watched their favorite season of Parks and Rec on Netflix. Other students decided it was high time to catch up on their homework, even doing homework for the following week. After playing catch up for a solid week, students had the chance to relax on the weekend, instead of stressing about upcoming midterms. Unfortunately, everyone was forced to return to reality as Monday came back around and classes were not cancelled. The unexpected week of prompted the rumor that the university would take Spring Break away to go around, but Marshall has yet to say anything about it.

The Holderby-Buskirk Ledger Being as February is the shortest month in terms of days it usually goes by fast but it seems like the cold temperature did not get that memo. Additionally the month had ton of snow, below freezing temperatures, and university closings. However, the staffs of Holderby and Buskirk have been keeping the fire going strong with programming for the month of February. The Buskirk RA staff helped residents feel the love with their Valentine’s themed programs such as “Galentines Day” which consisted of an alternative take on the Holiday and celebrating being a “gal”. In addition they held “Tacos and Ta-Tas” which taught residents to love their bodies and self-image. The Holderby RA staff also showed the Holderby residents some love by hosting “Heart Hop” which was a 1950s sock hop themed program and “A Hint-on of Love” which had Dr. Hinton talk to residents about healthy relationships, love and other such topics. Also the Buskirk Hall Council got in on the action with their “Frozen Movie Night”. The month of March is on the horizon and with it brings new and more programs. Holderby is having “It

ain’t over till it’s Clover”(3/12) which entails learning about traditional Celtic culture, “Oh the places you will go”(3/24) will be about appreciating Dr. Seus and his legacy, “Way of the Ninja”(3/10) is planned to discuss the origins of the ninja, myths about them, and what it entails to be one. The Buskirk staff is having “Buti, buti, buti, rocking ev-

erywhere” (3/10) which is program to teach Buti yoga basics and proper nutrition, “50 shades of knowledge about sex”(3/12) will have Dr. Mullerlile come and educate residents about misconceptions about sex and sexual health, and “Candy Science” (3/31) which Dr. Quinones will conduct experiments using candy and give residents the opportunity to learn of the science behind their favorite type of candy. The RA staff is excited about the upcoming programs and hopefully you will be too, hope to see you all there!

Second Annual Talent Competition S March 2nd, 2015 at 7:00pm www.marshall.edu/TotSW

The Twin Towers West Times In February, the Twin Towers West staff put on a program about healthy relationships and sexual health. During the meeting, students learned about safe sex practices, relationships, and sexually transmitted diseases. A representative from Student Health Education Programs provided information regarding campus and community resources for students. Students also had the opportunity to ask questions about Student Health Education Program’s survey regarding student sexual health and behavior. Students had many questions about STD prevalence and

treatment and campus “norms” regarding sexual activity. Students also learned about sexual assault and consent and discussed recent information in the media. RAs felt the program helped students become more open to ideas that they felt uncomfortable to talk about. For the month of March, the RAs are looking forward to putting on

our Spring Break Send Off program on March 11th at 8 pm. During this program, we will continue the conversation about healthful practice as well as provide students with ideas for how to make sure they have a productive spring break.

For those not traveling, Spring Break can also be a time to plan for the summer and look for jobs and internships for the summer break. TTW RAs will also host our monthly community meeting on Monday, March 9th at 9:30 pm. At our community meeting, we will talk about spring break and provide community updates. The meetings will take place on each floor with your RA. We hope to see you there!
