Sallie Mae Renters Insurance Accidents happen, and you have more important things to think about then how to replace damaged or lost items while living in the halls. If your residence hall room contents are not covered under your family’s homeowners insurance you should consider securing renters insurance through Sallie Mae.

Residents should be mindful of what they choose to bring to the residence halls. We recommend that you contact your roommate before packing to coordinate who will bring what to avoid bringing the same items. Residents in First Year Residence Halls and Marshall Commons should also bring toilet paper and cleaning supplies for the bathroom; you are held responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of your suite. Please refer to our list for guidance. If you have more questions about what items are permissible, please contact us at 1-800-438-5391 or visit www.marshall.edu/housing

Supportive Staff Academic Mentors (AM): Academic mentors are upper-class, undergraduate students who serve as role models in Twin Towers East, Marshall Commons, and Buskirk residence halls. Assistant Residence Directors (ARD): Several communities have assistant residence directors who assist the RD in the overall management of the residence halls. ARDs, much like the RDs, receive extensive training and are available to assist students and provide a living environment conducive to your success. Faculty in Residence (FIR): Faculty-in-Residence(s) are full time Marshall faculty members who reside in the residence halls and offer the opportunity for residents to live with exciting, innovative faculty members, with the goal of enhancing personal and academic success outside the classroom. DCs supervise the overall operation of the front desk and assist students with packages, mail, keys, and any questions you may have. Student Security (SS) and Desk Assistants (DA): The Student Security and Desk Assistant staff is comprised of students who assist in maintaining the front desk to ensure safety and security of the residence halls.

Summer 2016 Leadership Opportunities

Roommate Communication

Are you looking for a way to be involved? Become a member of the Hall Council (HC) in your building. Hall Council is a great way to get connected to the housing staff, meet others in your building, and gain leadership experience.

You will likely be spending a lot of time with your roommate, and they will be one of the first people you meet at Marshall. Take the time to discuss important issues about family, hobbies, academic interests, etc. Take some time and talk to your new roommate about what is important to you and what you both can do when there is a problem or conflict. Living together can be stressful and knowing how the other person operates means that you can resolve conflicts before they grow too large. If you have tried to communicate and sort through issues and it is simply not working, your residence hall staff is trained to work with students on these sorts of issues. With a little give and take, you can each adjust accordingly and make your environment comfortable.

You may ask yourself “What is HC?” HC is a student run organization that is composed of residents from each residence hall. Hall Councils objectives are to:  Improve the residence hall environment  Serve as a foundation for building campus leadership  Plan fundraisers and inter or intra-hall activities for the residents of their buildings Positions you are eligible to run for: President, Vice President, Secretary, Representative, and Floor Representative.

Treasurer,

Eco

HC interest meetings will be held during the first week of school. Talk to your RA or RD for more information.
