A family was referred to the contact centre in May 2022 with the aim to support a child in re-establishing face-to-face contact with her father at her own request, and support parents in addressing high levels of parental conflict and communication breakdown so a future, longer-term plan for child contact could be identified. Father and daughter had not had direct contact since September 2021, but did have virtual contact supervised by a Cafcass worker which his daughter enjoyed. Father and daughter had also been exchanging indirect contact of letters and gifts. The plan and support provided by the contact service was for individual introductory meetings with each parent, a preparation visit for the child, some observed sessions of contact between father and daughter to assess if he was able to meet her needs and that she was comfortable engaging directly with her dad. There was also one-to-one work with each parent around looking towards an independent long term Parenting Plan for contact, appropriate methods of communication, and what future arrangements could be put in place. The parties completed their intervention and support via the contact centre in August 2022. Following their 3 Supervised contact sessions and one-to-one dispute resolution sessions with parents, they agreed on a plan moving forward. The parties attended the contact centre for 2 more lower-level Supported contact sessions, and then onto independent handovers in the community managed between mother, father, and a 3rd party family member. They agreed the unsupervised contact would increase bit by bit from a few hours to full days and overnights. It was also agreed regarding shared school holidays and important events. Following attending the service mum provided feedback that attending the centre had been ‘very welcoming and reassuring’ as there had been concern around finding a suitable method of communicating with father. Staff had done focused work with both parents around conflict resolution, speaking with each parent to understand their perspective and then working with each of them to identify if there was anything they had in common. In the end parents agreed to use a Parenting App at this stage, rather than engaging in direct communication via text or phone calls right away.
“I HAD A GREAT TIME IN THE CENTRE, EVERYTHING WORKS CORRECTLY, THEY HELP BOTH PARENTS TO COME TO A LOT OF THINGS AND THEY ARE REALLY HELPFUL. THE STAFF ARE LOVELY, THANKS FOR THE CHILD SERVICE.” FEEDBACK FROM THE FATHER

About Child Contact
OUR NACCC ACCREDITED CHILD CONTACT CENTRES PROVIDE A WARM, SAFE ENVIRONMENT WHERE PARENTS/CARERS AND CHILDREN CAN RELAX AND SPEND TIME TOGETHER SUPERVISED CONTACT ASSISTED CONTACT SUPPORTED CONTACT HANDOVER CONTACT LETTERBOX/INDIRECT CONTACT
The service is for parents, grandparents or other family members who are no longer living with their children. We arrange contact in a safe and secure environment. We provide resources such as toys and games to enable contact to be a positive experience. We focus on meeting the needs of the child as best as possible to ensure their time spent with parents/carers is of value to them. Child Contact centres help when there are safety considerations, or to help trust and reliability to develop between parents and carers. We can help when parents or carers need time to agree alternative plans, or when relationships need support to develop, to benefit the child.

Domestic abuse includes physical violence, emotional abuse, or any other form of coercive control. The programme runs alongside one-to-one support sessions to ensure men are offered a robust intervention. Fresh Futures is fully accredited by RESPECT, the National Association for Domestic Abuse Perpetrator Programmes and Associated Support. SUPPORTING THE WHOLE FAMILY Education | Parental Inclusion | Family Support | Mental Health
Kieran was referred to Brian Jackson College by his previous school due to continued displays of poor behaviour. He was diagnosed with extreme OCD, anxiety and depression, and had very poor emotional and mental health. It was decided to put Kieran into smaller class groups to help him focus. He was placed in a nurture group to receive 1:1 support and work on his social and emotional welfare. Through home visits, Brian Jackson College maintained a close relationship with Kieran's mum, Carly, who confided in the teachers about her own financial struggles which were affecting her mental health, and Kieran's home life.
Linking with Fresh Futures Children & Family Services team, the teachers were able to get Carly assigned a 'Family Mentor', who supported her with budgeting, personal development, health and wellbeing, mental health and employment skills. As Carly worked with the family mentor, teachers recognised a positive change in Kieran's attitude, and improved attendance rates. Working with Carly also enabled the teachers to learn more about the behaviours Kieran displayed, which were often associated with Asperger’s. Following a referral to the Child Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), Kieran was prescribed medication for anxiety and depression and finally received his diagnosis of Asperger’s.
Brian Jackson College is an alternative provision college that supports pupils who have needed to leave mainstream education. The college's tailored approach to every pupil's unique needs and strengths ensure that every pupil gets the best possible start at adulthood.
"Kieran recently returned to the college to show off his new work uniform and thank the staff for turning his family's life around."

ONE REFERRAL HELPS A WHOLE FAMILY DAPP Participant | Victim Support Work | Child Contact | Parenting Plan
As Gary was referred to the Domestic Abuse Perpetrator Programme (DAPP), his ex-partner Claire (mother of his two children) was referred to the Integrated Support Service (ISS) - for optional support from our women's worker. Whilst Gary completed the DAPP, Claire worked with a Fresh Futures Women's Worker. As a part of this, Claire could pass on useful information to DAPP to aid Gary's journey. After 3 months on the DAPP, Gary was able to be referred into Child Contact to be reintroduced with his two children. Both Claire and Gary received support from the Child Contact team including introductory meetings and observed sessions of contact.
Each parent also received individual support looking towards independent long-term Parenting Plans for contact, communication methods, and future arrangements. Both parents and children completed their intervention support 4 months later, and agreed to third party supervised contact that would extend overtime, starting at several hours, to several days as they progressed. By the end of the intervention, Claire declared that she was more confident with the process, and Gary was positive that his bond with the children was improving .
DAPP's primary goal is to break the cycle of violence. But it is important to support everyone who has been affected by domestic violence In this case, collaborative working ensured the whole family were supported and could safely and confidently plan for the future.
"By identifying additional areas where we could provide support, we were able to achieve more effective and holistic results" 24

FROM SERVICE USER TO VOLUNTEER Fresh Futures Volunteer | Community Friend | Garden Volunteer
Steve started his Fresh Futures journey as a service user, working to improve his confidence and self-esteem levels with the Children & Family Services team.
During his visits to Fresh Futures, Steve would often speak with the different teams about ways that he could give back to the charity.
Whilst talking to Steve, Fresh Futures learned that his fridge freezer and tablet were broken, which was impacting his progress and his home life. Fresh Futures worked with external partners to source these items for him, as well as a home kit including bedding, duvet and pillows to make his home more comfortable.
After completing his time with a Fresh Futures family mentor, Steve felt comfortable enough to volunteer for Fresh Futures, gaining administration work experience that would further support his employability journey.
Fresh Futures Community Anchor then arranged a 1-year laptop loan to help Steve work on his development from home.
When this project ended, Steve completed some training with the Community Connections team, and became a Community Friend. Steve also joined the gardening group at Brian Jackson House, and regularly visits the building to volunteer in the Fresh Futures offices alongside Fresh Futures staff.
Through successful relationship building with this service user, Fresh Futures was not only able to provide more holistic support to the individual, but gain a long-term Fresh Futures volunteer that gives back to the community that supported him.
"Working with Fresh Futures helped me to build confidence with others, feel useful and have something positive to do"

FRESH FUTURES SUPPORTS FRESH STARTS Household Support | Food Vouchers | Vitamins | Victim Support | Locala Services When Shazia fled an abusive relationship with her 2-year-old son, Sky, she had nothing. After being homeless for nine months, she finally signed a tenancy to secure a roof over their heads, but needed support to be able to make a fresh start. Shazia self-referred to Fresh Futures Thriving Kirklees (TK) team, who carried out an independent assessment of her situation, identifying areas where they could help her and Sky in a way that would have immediate impact as well as long-term benefits. First, TK purchased a cooker for Shazia and provided her with food vouchers. This meant that Shazia could now buy fresh, healthy ingredients and cook hot food at home, instead of having to rely on costly takeaways for hot meals.
Next, the TK team completed a full assessment of the family, to identify other ways that Fresh Futures could support them both. TK signposted Shazia to Fresh Futures DAPP for victim support, and to TK's Locala, to receive Health Visitor Support for Sky, up until the age of four. TK then arranged for free safety equipment such as baby gates to be installed around her new home to keep Sky safe. Finally, TK helped Shazia sign up to the National Healthy Start scheme, so that Sky could receive free vitamins. This would ensure that Sky was getting all the important nutrients he needed for a healthy development.
Fresh Futures TK team work to reduce hardship and improve access to essential supplies and services. Their holistic approach ensures that each family is considered individually and receives unique support.
"If it wasn't for Fresh Futures, I don't know what we would've done. You have made a 100% positive impact on our living, which in turn leads to our healing. I can't thank you enough"
