FARM RETAIL A

Welcome to Stronger Together 2024!

We’ve had a year full of business challenges, and we come together over the next few days to learn and grow our businesses together.

In our changing world, I feel grateful to have the support of the collective group of likeminded farm retailers who form the FRA. We are always here to learn from each other and help our businesses thrive in uncertain times.

What makes the FRA so special is something myself and the council have been thinking deeply about during the rebrand process. We are so excited to share where we are up to with you all on conference day – make sure to come along to my Opening Speech to hear more.

I’m looking forward to catching up with you all – please come and say hi during the conference.

All best,

Will It Make The Boat Go Faster?

Ben Hunt-Davis

In 1998, Ben Hunt-Davis, MBE, was part of an underachieving GB rowing eight who consistently finished 7th or 8th. Ben and the team realised that to achieve their strongest ambitions they needed to change.

The team came together to set themselves a ‘Crazy Goal’ of winning Olympic Gold. Simply training harder wasn’t an option, they needed a whole new approach.

The whole team, not just those in the boat, relentlessly focus on how to improve their performance. The crew developed a brand-new way of working and began challenging every decision they made with the question “will it make the boat go faster?”.

Against all the odds, and despite not being the strongest or most talented, Ben and his crew achieved their Crazy Goal and won Gold at the Sydney Olympics. Now Ben’s story acts as a reminder that with the right approach, people are capable of amazing things that are often thought not possible.

See Ben Hunt-Davis in the Keynote Theatre, Buckingham Suite, at 2.15pm

Succession – How to get the Conversation Started and Identifying Successors within Family and/or Staff

Becky Miles, REAL Success

Most would agree that having a Succession Plan – whether it be for the family business and/or a team of staff – is vital for a business in order to provide reassurance to all involved that there is an agreed plan. For the majority actually having ‘that conversation’ is where all good intentions of moving things forwards falls at the first hurdle. Becky Miles, Senior Partner at REAL Success and experienced Succession Plan facilitator, will demonstrate and provide take home tools that will help everyone start and progress Succession planning. Through understanding personality traits of ourselves and others helps us identify how to engage effectively, what each person can bring to the business and how to build a harmonious team.

Are you staying on top of your Business Costs?

Salim Sajid, Advantage Buying and Russell Dean, SRD Technical

We’ve experienced a turbulent period of rising costs, inflation, and pressure on spending. The global environment looks unclear with conflicts, scarce commodities, supply chains pressure, and rising labour costs. Our customers are having to stretch their money further, which will bring pressure on sales in the coming year.

What can we do?

In this workshop, we’ll ask how much discipline you have in measuring your costs accurately. What processes do you have in place to monitor, control and systematically ensure you’re driving as much value from your overheads. We’ll encourage a share of best practices and offer some helpful insight into ways in which you can control your business costs.

Multifunctional Agriculture

Richard McCarthy, WorldFMC

The importance of multifunctional agriculture for the British context. This insight is one that is desperately needed in the UK and the USA. We are still so beholden to an outdated and unsustainable model of production-obsessed agriculture. With the current context of cascading crises, the moment for local agricultural systems may finally get its long overdue hearing. Moreover, it raises important questions about the kinds of investments, measurement priorities, and concepts of what agriculture is. The Italian experience is one that gives us language, conceptual tools, and policy priorities that may be useful in the moment of change in the UK.

Richard McCarthy is a food systems leader who specialises, in his 30-years of activities, in community development, capacity-building, and evaluation of the social and economic infrastructure that forges territorial relations.
