Hello and welcome to a very festive edition of YM Liverpool magazine!

First up we bring you my interview with a terrifically talented local chef who represented our city with distinction in the latest series of MasterChef: The Professionals

Gabriella Margiotta told me all about her experience on the BBC One cooking show, what she hopes to achieve in the future and how she plans on spending Christmas this year.

Meanwhile, we’ve got all the winners and best pics from a night of celebration at the Hilton Hotel as the YM Liverpool Property & Business Awards returned once again.

Hosted by Claire Sweeney, the prestigious ceremony saw accolades handed out in a range of categories from Property Developer of the Year and Best Affordable Housing Scheme to Best Student Landlord and Business Leader of the Year.

Elsewhere, the interiors team at John Lewis offers its tips on how to make your table centre the star this Christmas and WineTime’s Jon Atkinson takes you through his drinking choices for the big day.

Plus we shine the spotlight on a stunning Victorian home in Childer Thornton, check out Water Street’s Gaucho steakhouse, and invite you to indulge in a spot of last-minute shopping with our gardening guru Heather Marsh.

Finally, on behalf of the entire YM Liverpool team, I wish you a Merry Christmas and a joyous New Year.

Gabriella Margiotta is sous chef at her father’s award-winning South Liverpool restaurant Cucina Di Vincenzo and was a semi-finalist in the latest series of Masterchef: The Professionals ahead of Christmas to discuss her experience on the BBC One show, future ambitions, and find out what’s on her festive menu

words lawrence saunders

What made you want to take part in MasterChef: The Professionals Even though I’ve been a chef for many years, I’ve never considered myself of the calibre required to be up there with the UK’s best.

It was my friends Nina and Rebecca who were like ‘You should do it!’ and I was just like ‘No, this is something that’s way out of my reach’. It took a lot of pushing and shoving until Nina sat on the edge of my bed, passed me the iPad and said ‘We’re not leaving here until you apply’. The rest is history, I guess!

You said during the semi-final that you didn’t feel you were a competitive person before the show. What changed?

I’ve never been that competitive – even in sports when I was younger. I was always like ‘If you come first or second, you know, it’s fine’. But then, to see that I had this momentum and this rhythm and I was doing well, I was like ‘Oh hang on a second Gabriella, you can go all the way! You’ve got the stamina, you’ve got the drive and you’ve got the skill’. That’s where the spark of healthy competitiveness came and I just wanted it so bad.

Watching the show back, I can see that I was changing and growing as a chef throughout. With the first dishes, I stayed really true to my Italian heritage but as the competition went on, I did start to take a few more risks.

When it came to the dessert I made in the semi-final, I wanted to stick to my roots as my family is the main drive behind my cooking. That dish was about taking a childhood memory of having banana splits with my dad, sister and brother at Rossi’s ice cream parlour on

4 YM Liverpool

the front in Southport. It was always a Sunday treat after we’d had dinner and done our homework.

I took that memory and wanted to elevate it. It was quite bold and there were a lot of elements to it. At one point, I was like ‘Have I gone too far with this one?’. But you know, I took a risk and thankfully, it paid off.

Speaking of memories, what is your earliest food memory?

It’s got to be my mum’s sugo (pasta sauce). After milk, it was probably the first ‘meal’ I ever had. It was the most incredible, sweet Italian tomato sauce with garlic, oregano and olive oil.

How did you find the overall experience of appearing on MasterChef: The Professionals?

It was difficult and challenging but I think what makes it so difficult and challenging is because of how much you want it, and how much it means to you. That passion and that fire is what makes it stressful because you’re not just going to cook to impress, you’re going in to go all the way and showcase yourself in the best way possible in front of these incredible chefs. That aspect is what creates the pressure and makes it difficult, rather than the actual task at hand.

I understand you received some help from fellow Liverpool chefs whilst you were on the show. Can you tell us more about that?

When the whole MasterChef process started, I thought, ‘Oh gosh, what am I going to do?’. As a chef, I’ve got hundreds of different recipes and ideas but putting them together and elevating them is what I got a bit foggy with.

I reached out to Ellis Barrie (chef-owner at Lerpwl), who I’ve always kind of known from being in the industry, and he was such a crucial part of that whole experience for me. His knowledge of the kitchen and his passion for food is incredible.

He’d come here to Vincenzo’s and work alongside me to help get the dishes where they needed to be for the show. He was so supportive and I’ll be forever grateful for that. Anton Piotrowski from Röski and Paul Askew from The Art School were also there for me if I ever needed to ask anything.

INTERVIEW YM Liverpool 5
Watching the show back, I can see that I was changing and growing as a chef throughout. With the first dishes, I stayed really true to my Italian heritage but as the competition went on, I started to take a few more risks.

Are you hoping to do more TV in the future?

It’s funny, a lot of people have asked me that but I don’t know, to be honest. I’m just ready to ride the wave of whatever comes from this. The most important thing for me is to keep on working hard in the restaurant and keep making time for my family. Anything else that comes my way will be a blessing and a great opportunity. I’m ready to see where it goes and let everything happen organically.

Was it always the plan to end up working at your father’s restaurant or did you want to do your own thing?

After college, I started to work in professional kitchens and I just wanted experience. I always went and did my own thing like setting up a little street food business, working in France for a bit and travelling to Greece and Spain. But home is where the heart is and somehow I always ended up coming back. When Vincenzo’s finally opened, going on six years ago this year, it just felt like the most natural place to be. I love my family and we’re very close, so to have the opportunity to work with them every day was amazing.

I don’t know if I’ll be leaving anytime soon but I’m probably at the point in my career where I think I might be ready for bigger things. I definitely want to go and get some more experience in fine dining kitchens. Seeing the other contestants on MasterChef create such incredible food, kind of set something off in me. I don’t want to stop learning and I want to keep on pushing myself.

As we look ahead to Christmas, I was wondering what your plans are. Will you be doing the cooking on the big day? I imagine there will be no shortage of chefs in your house! I’m the crazy lady who will be working until about 10pm on Christmas Eve but will still be hosting Christmas dinner the next day. I’m not sure how many guests there will be this year but with Italian families, the numbers go up and down and then on the day there are always 10 more than you expected!

homemade tortellini, if I have the time. There’s never been a turkey on our table at Christmas in my whole life and there will be no rainbow trout either! There will be some pasta in there somewhere – it will be a bit of a mishmash really. I’ll probably do a raid of Vincenzo’s on Christmas Eve as well!

Any recipes for our readers to try over the festive period? A dessert maybe?

For dessert, I always like something that can be made ahead of time, so you’re not doing it on Christmas morning. A sticky toffee pudding is always amazing if you do that before. A good tip is to bake it in those disposable foil trays that you get from the takeaway. Add a little bit of amaretto for a little Italian twist and serve with some lovely homemade custard spiked with lots of amaretto of course.

A nice quick one I love to do uses panettone as I always find I’m left with about 20 of them in the house around this time of year. Take a big thick slice, make a little incision in the middle and then stuff it with Nutella, mascarpone, vanilla and some chopped chocolate – you are almost making a kind of stracciatella filling. Cover it with butter and then bake in the oven before serving with some cold pouring cream.

words and pictures

On 27 December 1960, The Beatles’ reputation as Liverpool’s biggest live act was secured. Returning from their first Hamburg trip, they were cheered by the crowd during a landmark show at Litherland Town Hall. From this performance onward, they commanded a massive local following and never looked back, with John Lennon later remarking: “It was that evening that we really came out of our shell and let go”.

This loyal following did not transcend beyond Liverpool however, and in December 1961, the group played at the Palais Ballroom, Aldershot, in an advertised Liverpool v London battle of the bands. The London band failed to turn up and the Fab Four ended up performing at a near-empty venue.

The following December in Peterborough, a piece of opportunism backfired when Brian Epstein managed to get The Beatles onto the bill of two Frank Ifield shows. The promoter agreed to let the band play for 10 minutes per show without pay. Despite their growing reputation throughout 1962, the lads bombed. It was clear not everyone beyond the north of England had come under their spell, yet.

Fast-forward three years and what would turn out to be the band’s final UK tour got underway in December 1965. It included their last performance in Liverpool and their final ever British concert on 12 December in Cardiff, during which, a male fan jumped on stage and attempted to grab George and Paul.

A couple of weeks later on Boxing Day, Paul was in the Wirral visiting family when he came off a moped and chipped one of his front teeth. He was out riding with heir to the Guinness fortune, Tara Browne, who died in a car crash the following December. Tara’s tragic death would eventually inspire John to write the opening lines of ‘A Day In The Life’.

On the same day in 1967, the Magical Mystery Tour film aired on BBC One. Broadcast in black and white due to technical reasons, it was perceived to be the band’s first artistic failure and was disliked by critics and viewers alike.

More than a decade later, Beatles’ fans would be united by an altogether different emotion following John’s murder in New York City on 8 December 1980

On the day the music died and the city cried, over 30,000 people gathered in Liverpool to mourn the icon at a memorial vigil organised by former Beatles concert promoter Sam Leach.

Moving ahead almost two decades, the popularity of the Fab Four was still as strong as ever in 1999 and this was demonstrated when more than a million fans applied for just 300 tickets to see Paul appear at the Cavern Club on 14 December

Ahead of the show, he was reunited with legendary Cavern DJ Bob Wooler, who had introduced The Beatles on countless occasions back in the early days.

Bob, who had been drinking in The Grapes, agreed to announce Paul onto the famous stage one last time that evening. Unfortunately, he went back to the pub and was too far gone when it came to showtime.

Paul was said to have been genuinely disappointed as he could see it would have been a really fitting moment.

Heading down to London now and on 22 December 2010, Abbey Road’s zebra crossing was given Grade II-listed status.

A place of pilgrimage for Beatles’ fans, it was the first time such protection had been afforded to a piece of road furniture – all thanks to the Fab Four and a 10 minute photoshoot one August morning in 1969.

Taking us right up to date to end this month’s timeline, December 2022 sees another exclusive reveal at the Liverpool Beatles Museum on Mathew Street. This unveiling is a little bit different to previous events but it promises to be equally as interesting and one you defineltey won’t want to miss!

Restaurant review

Gaucho

My guest and I were delighted to recently visit newly opened Argentinian steakhouse Gaucho – located inside the Grade II-listed former Bank of Liverpool building on Water Street.

We were greeted with a vibrant open bar area upon arrival, which I can see easily becoming the city centre’s next night-time hotspot.

Surrounded by ornate décor accentuated with luxurious details, I ordered Gaucho’s take on an Old-Fashioned (£22) featuring white truffle-infused Mortlach whisky, whilst my partner plumped for a Lychee Blush (£11.50).

The Lychee creation, which mixed the exotic fruit with Tanqueray gin, reconstructed lemon juice, rhubarb and Peychaud’s Bitters, reminded my partner of her favourite cocktail we had during a trip to Dubai. I suspect this one is going to be a winner with the ladies of Liverpool!

After finishing our drinks, we were seated and guided through the multitude of different meat options available. My partner thoroughly enjoyed this as she never knows

how to have her steak cooked and simply goes with the classic ‘medium rare’ every time.

For starters, I enjoyed the Steak Tartare (£11). My date selected the Seared Diver Scallops (£18.50) served with Nduja butter, Aguachile verde and lemon crumb. I thought it was an odd decision to order fish at a steak restaurant, but what do I know? She loved them!

The pair of us eagerly awaited the main course which we knew Gaucho was known for and were utterly astonished at my partner’s incredible Churrasco de Lomo (£57.50) – a succulent fillet marinated in garlic, parsley and olive oil.

I opted for Tira de Ancho (£47.50) – spiral-cut slow-grilled rib-eye with chimichurri. Just like the scallops, it was buttery and delicious.

Alongside our stunning mains, we shared sides of Truffle Mac & Cheese (£6.50), Sautéed Broccoli (£5.50), and a bearnaise sauce which complemented the steaks perfectly without being too overpowering. When you order meats like these they deserve to be the stars of the show!

Onto dessert and we couldn’t decide on just one, so we split the delightfully decadent Tray Baked Cookie Dough (£8) and a Sticky Apple & Date Pudding (£7). We managed to fit in another cocktail for good measure before we left – helping to bring down the curtain on a fabulous evening.

If you’re looking for a date night spot or

special occasion meal, I would thoroughly recommend Gaucho.

It’s great to see such a respected chain join Liverpool’s thriving culinary scene and it’s certainly not one to be missed this festive season and beyond.

Domestic abuse –Consult the legal experts

At Paul Crowley & Co solicitors, we are committed to helping end domestic abuse for good. If you are a victim of domestic abuse, our dedicated team of family law experts is here to help

In the year between March 2020 and March 2021, there were 845,734 recorded domestic abuse-related crimes in England and Wales – a 6% increase from the previous year, with a surge in domestic violence against women rising by almost 40% after the final whistle at football matches.

These crimes can affect not only the victim’s physical and emotional wellbeing, but also that of their family, friends and livelihood too.

What is domestic abuse?

The Domestic Abuse Act 2021 (DAA), which came into force in January 2022, gives a legal definition of domestic abuse.

Section 1 requires that the people involved are over 16 and “personally connected”, for example, former partners or relatives.

There are different types of behaviour which now constitute domestic violence:

• Physical or sexual abuse

• Violent and threatening behaviour

• Psychological or emotional abuse

• Controlling behaviour – acts which threaten, humiliate or intimidate in order to harm, punish or frighten the victim

• Coercive control – acts designed to make a person subordinate and dependent by isolating them from support, regulating their behaviour and depriving them of independence

• Economic abuse – any behaviour which substantially affects your ability to gain and use money or obtain goods

What can I do as a victim of domestic abuse?

If you are experiencing domestic abuse and are in immediate danger, always call 999 for assistance. You should contact the police and report the abuse as a crime. At Paul Crowley & Co we can apply for an order on your behalf under the Family Law Act 1996:

• Non-Molestation order: This is an order which prevents your abuser from coming within a specified distance of you and your property or communicating with you in any way.

• Occupation order: This is an order which enforces your right to live in the family home and lets you control who comes into your property.

If the perpetrator of the abuse breaks the rules set out in a non-molestation order, it can lead to their arrest and a custodial sentence being imposed.

What is a Domestic Violence Protection Order (DVPO)?

Introduced by the DAA 2021 legislation, domestic violence protection notices are served by the police on the perpetrator and then approved by the magistrates’ court. They give the victim immediate protection after an incident.

The restrictions in the notice appear as a domestic violence protection order which can apply for 14-28 days, and can require the abuser to leave and stay away from the victim’s home and surrounding area.

Why choose Paul Crowley & Co solicitors:

Here at Paul Crowley & Co, we understand that domestic abuse is a very sensitive topic, and we will not pressure you into taking any action that you aren’t comfortable with. Our solicitors are here to listen without judgement to your story and find out the best way of proceeding safely.

Although our main goal is to achieve justice for victims, we cover other cases too. For example, if you believe you have been falsely accused of being a perpetrator of domestic violence, our team will hear you out and help you achieve justice.

LIVERPOOL BUSINESS MARKS 60TH ANNIVERSARY WITH TOP INDUSTRY ACCOLADE

A SOUTH LIVERPOOL FLOORING STORE is celebrating after picking up an illustrious industry award.

Woolton Carpets was recently named Best Flooring Retailer (1-3 stores) by readers of Interiors Monthly – the UK’s leading business-tobusiness magazine for the residential interiors market.

Based on Speke Road in Garston, the award win capped a memorable year for the store as it marked its 60th anniversary, and three decades since owner Tony Griffin purchased the business.

Tony, who runs Woolton Carpets with his son Anthony, first joined the company as a trainee sales assistant in 1975 after leaving school, before becoming a director seven years later.

The store enjoyed a bumper 2021/22, with sales up a quarter and the end-of-year fitting diary being closed in mid-November given the demand from customers for its services.

In the past two years, the company has seen huge growth in LVT

Long-serving staff are key for the business, with 12 of its 15 team members having been there for at least 17 years.

Tony says: “We’re all in it together, if a job needs doing, we go and do it. We’re a team, we have no bosses.

“We all know what we’re talking about – if we don’t know now, we never will!”

SANDWAY HANDS FIRST CUSTOMERS KEYS TO THEIR NEW HOMES

SANDWAY HOMES has welcomed 23 homeowners to properties at its Hey Farm Gardens and Sandy Brook developments in Sefton.

THE DIRECTORS OF Paul Crowley & Co Solicitors were out celebrating in style at this year’s glittering YM Liverpool Property & Business Awards, in recognition of the outstanding talent that we have here in Liverpool.

The final presentation of the evening was a special ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ for an individual who was truly inspirational in the city.

This award went to Paul Crowley, former managing director of Paul Crowley & Co Solicitors, in acknowledgement of the remarkable work that Paul achieved throughout his life in helping the people of Liverpool to achieve justice.

Julie Jones received the award on behalf of the law firm and gave a closing speech in honour of Paul. The moving tribute described how well respected Paul was amongst his peers and how truly deserving of the title he was. Paul viewed his staff and the exceptional level of service that they provided to their clients as the two main elements of the business. Equally the staff at Paul Crowley & Co held Paul in high esteem.

Pictured receiving the award from host Claire Sweeney are the directors from Paul Crowley & Co, (from left) Emma Smith, Edwina Harkin, Jenna Gall, Daniel Griffiths, Mike Fogarty, Paul Lowry and Julie Jones.

Paul Crowley & Co would like to thank YM Liverpool for hosting such a prestigious event and to say thank you to all the well-wishers on the night.

A total of 36 homes have been sold across both sites to a range of customers including families and first-time buyers.

As well as open market homes, Sandway is also providing homes for Shared Ownership and rent, which are managed by registered provider Together Housing.

Jackie, who was among the first residents to move into one of the Shared Ownership properties, says: “I cannot say how thankful I am to Sandway Homes, Together Housing and Dashing Mortgages for helping me to achieve a dream I thought was beyond my grasp – finally having a place to call my own. It has been life-changing.”

Sandra Coventry, head of business operations and marketing at Sandway, adds: “Volatility within the construction sector has been a challenge at times, with some homes being delayed, but the team continues to work around the clock to ensure that completions are taking place as quickly as possible.

“It is rewarding to have received some great feedback from our customers, and we look forward to the sites further contributing to the thriving communities within Sefton.”

table centre Make your the star of Christmas

You’ve dressed the tree, put up your wreath, and sorted out your place settings… but what about a stunning table centerpiece?

A TABLE CENTREPIECE CAN MAKE – or break – your Christmas table. If it’s too tall or too wide, you won’t be able to pass the cranberry sauce across. Too small and it runs the risk of being overlooked.

So how do you go about creating an Insta-worthy table hero?

Start by mocking up a few placesettings, seeing not only how much space you have to play with, but the shape too. With an extended rectangular table would something long and thin work best? Should you keep your styling contained to a round hero piece to echo your circular table? These are the sort of questions to think about.

There are other practical elements to consider, too. If you’ve small children, then replace real candles with LED ones (or strings of battery-operated fairy lights). Going for a plant-based garland? A top stylist’s tip is to sit it on a length of bubble wrap to avoid any water damage to your tabletop. Want to make your turkey the hero? Then try placing two smaller arrangements at either end of your table to frame it. Make sure you aren’t taking up all of your table space – you

need room to pop down serving dishes and glassware too. If you need to give your arrangement more height, then try placing it on a cakestand.

Over recent years, there‘s been a trend in Christmas styling land to lift the centrepiece off the table, with suspended wreaths and decorated branches freeing up space below. Forage for a suitable branch, or use invisible thread to hold a more lightweight wreath from the ceiling.

From vases filled with baubles to light-up mini trees, from collections of festive animals to candlesticks wound with fresh foliage, get creative and make this year’s centrepiece your most stylish yet.

From breakfast to bed, WineTime’s Jon Atkinson takes you through his drinking choices on Christmas Day

THIS TIME LAST YEAR I put together a series of suggestions for yuletide drinking very much based on what I was planning to enjoy myself, which is all well and good, but given that it is just the two of us plus two dogs for Christmas dinner we do like to push the boat out. So, for this column, I’m looking at suitably festive fare for those of you that will be feeding the masses. Whatever you decide to go with for your festive drinking I hope that it drinks well and makes for a wonderful festive feast – Merry Christmas and a happy and (hopefully) prosperous New Year!

Colli Vicentini Torre dei Vescovi

One of the joys of Christmas is having a glass of fizz with breakfast! For us on Christmas Day, that will be smoked salmon with scrambled eggs on toast but a glass of bubbles (preferably without orange juice!) will slip down beautifully with a full English, eggs Benedict or cream cheese on a bagel. Ideally, for me, that fizz would be Champagne with Louis Roederer’s ‘Collection 242’ (£39.99) a particular favourite. However, if you are catering for an extended family, then Champagne could put a serious dent in the Christmas budget! This is just one reason why Prosecco has become so popular over the last several years. Most Prosecco is made using a different method to Champagne, Cava, etc, which gives it a gentler sparkle under less pressure. My Prosecco of choice is ‘Torre dei Vescovi’ from Colli Vicentini – an outstanding co-operative in Montecchio Maggiore near Vicenza. Extra dry, it has a lovely, rich apple flavour with aromas of citrus fruits and apples.

Matahiwi Estate Pinot Noir 2018

Red Burgundy, is of course, Pinot Noir – a grape variety that has a reputation for being a tricky customer to grow. Whilst historically it was hard to look outside of Burgundy, there are now many excellent examples from a surprisingly diverse range of countries/regions. The main thing that these areas have in common is that they are all relatively cool climates. The one I have plumped for here is from New Zealand, specifically Wairarapa at the southern tip of the North Island. The Kiwis have garnered a deservedly excellent reputation for Pinot Noir and this one from Matahiwi Estate is delicious – surprisingly pale in appearance it offers an alluring bouquet of raspberries, cranberries and forest fruits, whilst the palate is gentle but juicy with a wealth of red fruit flavours backed by chalky-textured tannins.

Ch. Martinolles Vieilles Vignes Limoux Chardonnay

The choice of white and/or red wine is inevitably dictated by the food being served. If you are going down the traditional turkey dinner route, then in a perfect world, red and white Burgundy would be an excellent choice. However, the world is not perfect and decent Burgundy can run to eyewatering sums. Fortunately, there are some wonderful alternatives with Ch. Martinolles Vieilles Vignes Limoux Chardonnay chief among them and one that I take home on a regular basis. Bergsig Cape LBV 2001

Christmas affords an excellent opportunity to enjoy fortified wines. The likes of Port and Sherry rarely get to see the light of day throughout the year but it’s Christmas, so let’s go crazy! Bergsig is a wonderful estate in Breedekloof, South Africa, which means that although this delicious bottle is, to all intents and purposes a Port, we cannot ‘technically’ call it that. Bergsig are of course, aware of this, so have cheekily (for now at least) badged it as Cape LBV (Late Bottled Vintage is one of the more popular incarnations for Port). Bergsig don’t give away what grapes are involved here, but we do know that they have substantial plantings of Touriga Nacional, Portugal’s signature red grape, which is a good place to start. This is delicious – perhaps a little sweeter and richer than a ‘regular’ Port, so potentially a surprise pairing for the Christmas pudding as well as with a cheeseboard.

Region’s property and business sectors celebrated a year of success on 30 November as the prestigious YM Liverpool Property & Business Awards returned.

Achievements were recognised during a lavish ceremony hosted by Liverpool-born star of stage and screen Claire Sweeney at the Hilton Hotel.

Accolades were presented across 17 categories ranging from Property Developer of the Year and Best Affordable Housing Scheme to Best Student Landlord and Business Leader of the Year.

The black-tie event, headline sponsored by Greenwood Developments, featured a charity raffle in aid of Football For Change alongside the main presentation.

Nearly 300 guests enjoyed a pre-dinner drinks reception sponsored by Kennedy Consulting Services and Legacie Developments as well as a luxury three-course meal followed by a live DJ set.

Lawrence Saunders, editor of YM Liverpool, says: “I was delighted we were able to host this celebration almost two decades on from the magazine’s first awards and once again gather together leading lights from the region’s property and business sectors to reflect on another 12 months of remarkable achievements.

“This event has highlighted the very best of the region’s property sector ever since that first ceremony back in 2004 and, in the year which saw YM Liverpool publish its landmark 500th edition, we were thrilled to also honour members of the wider business community through a range of new categories.

“Congratulations to each and every winner and we look forward to doing it all again next year.”

Saving vs Investing in your future: the right balance for you

Is it better to save or invest? It all depends on what you want to achieve. We look at the differences and what they mean for your future finances

When we talk about saving and investing, we generally think of it as setting some money aside for the future.

Go deeper into it, however, and it becomes clear we’re talking about two quite distinct activities. For example, what do we mean by the future – next week, next month, next year or indefinitely? How much are we putting aside, where does it go and what do we want from it?

The answers to these questions tell us whether we’re talking about saving or investing. And it’s important to understand the difference.

Broadly speaking, saving is about putting money aside in the short term, whether it’s for a ‘rainy day’ buffer fund or to pay for something specific, such as a holiday, car repair or work on the home. It usually entails putting money into cash accounts that can be accessed at short notice.

But while cash savings are a vital part of our resources – financial advisers recommend aiming for three to six months of ‘emergency’ money, if possible – they aren’t usually suitable for longer-term goals, not least because cash tends to lose value to inflation over time.

This is where investments come in. Investing is about setting money aside and leaving it untouched so that it can have the potential to grow into a bigger sum, benefiting from the ‘snowballing’ effect of compounding. It involves taking more risk with the money you put in, but the ups and downs of markets typically even out over the long term (five years or more).

What are the reasons for saving?

Saving is very much in the here and now. It’s dictated by our current circumstances, how much we can set aside, our

immediate needs and objectives.

Circumstances have an impact as well. For example, rising inflation means many households have less disposable income available, if any. However, difficult times, such as inflationary periods and the COVID-19 pandemic, also remind us of our financial vulnerability and the importance of having a safety net.

Investing for the long term

So why do people invest? Because it’s also important to focus on ‘decades not days’ – investing for our future self rather than our present self.

Sometimes there will be a particular goal in mind, such as saving for a child so they have financial resources on reaching adulthood. While putting money into a Cash ISA for 15 to 20 years might prevent you from spending it, its value will be eroded by inflation.

Stock-market-based investments tend to produce much more growth over the long term due to the risk-reward relationship. This is the principle that by taking more risk with our money, we have the potential to receive more reward.

There are several ways of ensuring you don’t take more risk than you’re comfortable with, while you can also manage risk by making sure your investments are well diversified (spread across different assets).

We can guide you through all of this and help keep your investments on track to meet your long-term objectives.

Best of both worlds

In a perfect world, most of us would be both saving for the shorter term and investing for the medium term (six months to five years) and long term.

If you wish to discuss the best strategy for you in regards to saving and investing, please feel free to contact us.

The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested.

An investment in equities will not provide the security of capital associated with a Cash ISA or a deposit account with a Bank or Building Society.

COOKS Carmelo

A traditional Italian dish perfect for winter nights combining classic ingredients including creamy Fontina cheese and the strong-flavoured smoked ham, Speck

POLENTA WITH FONTINA AND SPECK

Serves 3

Ingredients

• 250g Polenta • 200g Fontina cheese

• 1l water • 5g black pepper

Method

• 150g Speck • 100g butter

• 1tsp salt

• Chop the Fontina and the Speck into small cubes

• Put a pot of salty water on the stove and leave it to boil. Add the polenta. Some people like to add a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil at this point which can help to avoid the polenta getting stuck if it’s not stirred continuously

• You can use traditional polenta flour (bramata, saraceno, tartagna or white) and it will take about an hour to cook. The instant version comes as flour but is precooked and will only take a few minutes before it’s ready

• Whichever option you choose, stir the mix often during the cooking process. Always follow the packaging instructions to be more precise

• When the polenta is almost cooked, add three-quarters of the Fontina, Speck and butter before stirring

• Place it all in a bowl or leave it in the pot and then add the remaining ingredients

Celebrity fashion fix – iGD Sport helps gym-goers train harder and recover faster with new technology

Former Waterloo Road actress and entrepreneur, Zeri Cheetham-Karcz, has taken the brand to public prominence

Anew leisurewear collection is rapidly emerging as the latest must-have gym attire as leading athletes, celebrities and influencers reap the benefits of its state-of-the-art compression technology.

The sportswear range from iGD Sport, which comprises cutting-edge design and performance-enhancing support, offers male and female sportswear including leggings, bras, shorts, calf and elbow guards and t-shirts, allowing increased training and faster recovery.

The technology was originally designed by founder and physiotherapist, Andy Wray, who worked with athletes to craft the structural elements of the brand around the human anatomical structure for ultimate performance on the pitch, in the boxing ring or at the gym.

It has since grown under the leadership of former Waterloo Road actress and entrepreneur, Zeri Cheetham-Karcz, who has taken the brand to public prominence.

The input of the glamorous mum helped create stunning pieces which are being rocked not only in the gym but at home, on the high street and at work. iGD is also being worn by fitness

models and TV and music personalities. Boxing legend Tyson Fury is joined by Roy Jones Jr, Kell Brook and Josh Warrington in wearing iGD Sport, while Love Island star Kady McDermott, singer Michelle Heaton and rapper Bugzy Malone are also regularly spotted in the brand. And with iGD growing rapidly, being supplied to North West football superstars such as Trent AlexanderArnold and Conor Coady, Leeds-born Zeri is excited by the prospect of bringing technical sportswear to an even larger mainstream market in an affordable and stylish manner.

She says: “When I became brand partner of iGD, I knew the compression sportswear was the best I have ever seen.

“It not only has the benefits of increasing blood flow and aiding recovery, but it also sculpts and supports, making it perfect for both male and female customers.

“iGD Sport is proud to be trusted by so many leading sportspeople to help them not only perform to their maximum but recover as quickly and confidently as possible.

“We are seeing huge interest in iGD products from people who train every day and also want to look and feel great in their sportswear as we revolutionise the market.

“It is exciting to see the iGD name being represented across the globe during international sporting events, but just as important for us to provide the day-to-day gym user with a comfortable, stylish and enhanced sportswear experience.

“The feedback we have on our new compression range has been sensational and we are excited to roll out the product across the UK to cement our position as the most exciting and technologically advanced sportswear brand to watch in 2023.”

Heather Marsh shares her best Christmas gift ideas for green-fingered friends and family

Heather’s mulled wine

I don’t know about you, but these days I always find mulled wine rather disappointing. Whether it’s shop bought or at a Christmas market, it tastes nothing like I remember it back in the day.

My father used to concoct a ‘mulled wine’ of his own using his secret recipe. He’d serve it in shot glasses, as it had a kick like one of Santa’s reindeers. Even with the empty bottle of vodka in full view, the only ingredient he’d ever admit to putting in it was blackcurrant juice.

Gardening Stool and Tool Set £19.99, livivo.co.uk

So why not try my quick, easy and tweaked version of my dad’s recipe. This warming and seasonal drink really is delicious and will bring plenty of cheer to any Christmas gathering.

INGREDIENTS (SERVES 12)

1 litre bottle Cream sherry

1 litre dry cider

1 litre water

Half litre Vimto

2 tbsp set honey

4 cinnamon sticks

4 star anise

2 pcs of stem ginger, peeled, finely grated

2 tsp allspice

115g soft brown sugar

Broad-leaved silver holly £23.99, Waitrose

Mug and Shovel Spoon £10, national trust.org.uk

4 oranges

4 lemons

Extra bottle of vodka (optional!)

METHOD

1. Start by putting the zest and juice of two oranges and two lemons into a large saucepan with the Vimto and water.

2. Slice the remaining oranges and lemons into half-moons and put these into the pan with the honey, cinnamon, allspice, sugar and grated ginger.

3. Put the pan on a low heat and stir until the sugar has dissolved, let this simmer for about 5 minutes.

4. Add the cider, sherry and star anise and heat up but don’t bring to the boil.

5. Serve warm, ladling into small mugs, or if you’re dead posh, punch glasses. Cheers!

want to make a massive impact in Liverpool’ – developer reveals big plans for 2023

Sourced Development Group recently announced that phase one of its £100m Westminster Park scheme on Scotland Road is set to complete three months ahead of schedule

Managing director of the Widnes-based company Joanne Waller oversees all aspects of each development and recently discussed the last 12 months and her future ambitions for the business.

Joanne, tell us more about the major North West developments Sourced Development Group is working on. We acquired Westminster Park in February and our initial plan was to complete phase one in April 2023, but it will actually be finished in January 2023 – three months ahead of schedule. This is almost unheard of in the construction industry and a simply amazing achievement.

Even with material and pipeline issues following the coronavirus pandemic, our developments are being delivered on time.

Elsewhere in Liverpool, we are also going to be on-site at Kingsway Square at the end of the year, while also delivering 27 luxury studio apartments in Derby Court and a further mixed-use residential development at Carlton Court. On top of this, we have live sites at Regent Plaza, Carnaby Place and Wardour Point in Manchester.

It is a very, very exciting time, and there are more projects in the pipeline!

How successful have the past 12 months been for the company?

We have been able to hit the ground running in 2022. It is fantastic to show people what Sourced Development Group is able to achieve, even on the back of the pandemic and difficult times economically.

We remain committed to continuing to work with our funding partners to make things happen and create beautiful, impactful and responsible spaces for people to live in.

We are a mostly North West workforce and we care about our work. We are incredibly passionate about bringing our business and developments to life and giving residents a space to be proud of.

How rewarding do you find your work?

At Sourced Development Group, a lot of our team are from Liverpool, so it is incredibly satisfying to go back into the communities we grew up in and create funds, jobs and beautiful homes.

We are putting the spotlight back on derelict, unloved spaces and helping turn them into something elegant. Our work is all positive, right down to the tenants starting their new lives when they enter our homes for the first time.

Take our work at Derby Court, for example. It was a burned down pub. It is now home to 27 beautiful, boutique apartments which people are thrilled to live in.

It brings new life to an area because previously there was nothing there for anyone. This is incredibly rewarding for the whole team and we are passionate about continuing in this manner.

Sourced Development Group is also committed to giving back to the community. Can you elaborate on this further?

Within Sourced Construction Group and Sourced Development Group, we have students from Riverside College learning

with the team, as well as apprentices working at Regent Plaza.

We are also heavily involved with local charities, such as foodbanks and homeless shelters, as we understand it is a trying time for the economy.

We are partnering with The Whitechapel Centre while also providing to families who are in Alder Hey with a sick child over Christmas.

These are all issues close to our hearts and we want to help, particularly over the cold winter months during a cost-ofliving crisis.

Finally, tell us about the plans Sourced Development Group has for 2023?

We are putting a pre-application in for Carlton Court as we go full steam ahead with Kingsway Square. We are aiming for a similar timescale as we have with The 56 at Westminster Park – delivering ahead of schedule.

We want to have a massive impact in Liverpool, particularly on the L3 and L5 postcodes, and we will be providing a lot of beautiful homes for residents in 2023.

We are also in negotiations for another landmark site, which is incredibly exciting. Watch this space!

AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROVIDER LEADS ON CHRISTMAS SUPPORT INITIATIVE

Local community organisations received pallets of food, care and toy packages in time for the festive period

FAMILIES, INDIVIDUALS and older people across the Liverpool City Region will receive vital support thanks to a food, care, and toy package drive this Christmas.

The initiative, led by One Vision Housing, is set to help almost 2,000 beneficiaries, with funding from its Community Development Fund, fellow members of The Sovini Group, Sovini Trade Supplies

and Sovini Property Services, and local law firm, Weightmans LLP.

A number of community organisations received large pallets of goods ready for the Christmas period, including Netherton Park Neighbourhood Centre, Sefton Opera, Light for Life, Brunswick Youth and Community Centre, Joseph Lappin Centre, Veterans HQ Liverpool and the Indy Food Pantry.

One Vision Housing is part of The Sovini Group, which recently received an award for its innovative approach to responsible business across social and governance practices from the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce.

Ian Mitchell, managing director of housing at The Sovini Group, says: “We are committed to creating opportunities and changing lives in the communities we serve. As the cost of living continues to rise, we know many will be finding this time of year challenging.

“Alongside the help One Vision Housing provides through its wonderful support teams, we hope that these packages will help those in need this Christmas.”

NEW EVENT AIMING TO SPREAD WELLBEING TREND IN LIVERPOOL HEALTH DRIVE

A GROUP OF FEMALE ENTREPRENEURS have come together to create an initiative in Liverpool that they hope will influence more people to discover a sustainable wellbeing outlook rather than just a quick fix.

Wellness In The City, taking place on 27 January at the RCP Spaces in The Spine building, is aiming to educate and raise awareness of all the options available in the Merseyside wellness arena.

Clare Ellis, founder of Wellness In The City, says: “Liverpool isn’t great at health.

“We’re really good at enjoying ourselves, being kind to others, dining out, and

shopping in what is regarded as one of the top five leisure destinations in the UK.

“However, we have been considerably worse off when it comes to the health league tables over the decades.

“We all believe this event is just the start for companies, organisations and the public to be better informed about accessible options for creating and maintaining better

wellbeing in the future.”

Wellness In The City has signed up a range of experienced practitioners to exhibit on the day and host masterclasses in their chosen fields of health.

Clare’s partners in the project include Rachel Riches, Margaret Bell, and Claire Morton, a well-known multidisciplinary wellbeing specialist.

LIVERPOOL AIR CONDITIONING

firm Everkool has reported a cool 40% surge in sales of its household ventilation units in 2022.

The company has received an additional 5,000 orders for systems to be installed in people’s homes across the year, a huge increase on its 2021 figures, despite the energy market uncertainty and wider economic headwinds.

The booking bonanza comes as the firm, which is currently based in Bootle, is about to move into a new 18,000 sq ft headquarters in Bank Hall, North Liverpool.

Established in 2007 by Liverpool-born entrepreneur Craig Greenwood, Everkool is one of the North West’s leading providers of air conditioning and ventilation units, working alongside many of the region’s

biggest brands including Merseytravel, Knowsley Council and Epic Hotels.

Commenting on the growth in sales, Everkool managing director Craig says: “We are delighted that our air conditioning and ventilation units have proved popular with families across the region.

“We are seeing real demand from

individuals who want their home set at the right temperature, whatever the weather.

“The fact that we are about to move into our new Bank Hall premises will hopefully help build on our order base this year and help prepare us for a busy 2023. I’m incredibly excited about Everkool’s future.”
