We love making slime!

Efforts from our students and staff paid off when we were presented with 1st Runner Up of “Best Sales Award” for Sengkang South Little Entrepreneurs at KI-BIES Carnival 2018

This year’s Y Junior Entrepreneurship Programme (YJEP) was different from previous years. Instead of selling our self-made products at school level, we took to the community and were involved at the KIBIES Carnival 2018, jointly organised by Central Singapore CDC, Citizen’s Consultative Committees, People’s Association, Sengkang South RC and YMCA of Singapore. Our students put into practice all they have learnt about entrepreneurship – from production, through marketing strategies, to sales. This year’s theme was Fairy Tales. After much discussion, our centre decided to sell Slime. The students were delighted to learn how to make Galaxy & Fluffy slime, and they enjoyed the entire process. On 24th March 2018, selected students (Angel, Darius, Keanu and Iman) had the opportunity to pitch their sale to the public at the KI-BIES Carnival 2018. Our Galaxy & Fluffy slime sold like hotcakes! We were honoured to have the guest of honour, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, stop by our booth to interact with our students. The students mustered their courage to explain the slime-making process to him while he tested the product. 1|P age

March School Holidays Learning Journey: Maritime Experiential Museum

Our students were transported back in time to follow the footsteps of four great maritime adventurers (Marco Polo, Sang Nila Utama, Ibn Battuta and Zheng He) as they return to the Maritime Silk Road of eras past. They were in awe as they experienced if they had what it takes to be a mariner, behold and admire the Jewel of Muscat, encounter and escape from pirates, learn about the four ports of call, navigation skills and many more! Finally, Typhoon Theatre… the top hit for this learning journey as students can’t get enough of this multisensory simulation enhanced with special effects! They experienced the drama on board a 9th century vessel that is buffeted by the waves before sinking to the bottom of the sea. How cool is that! 2|P age

Term 2 Enrichment Programme: Y Junior MasterChef

“I have learnt how to cut a tomato!” – Benjamin Koh (P3)

Look at our Junior MasterCfhefs in action!

A hot favourite, Y Junior MasterChef, is an enrichment programme that involves both theory and handson activities, where students are able to learn about food commodities, healthy meal planning guidelines, meal sequence, food hygiene, creation of recipes, food measurements, as well as food preparation, under close supervision of conducting mentors. Students get to taste their very own food masterpiece, and they learn adjectives that will be used for their food evaluation after the tasting.

Term 2 Enrichment Programme: Fun with Recycling

“Now I can teach my younger brother how this craft is done!” – Matrick (P3)

Students were taught to use recyclables such as old magazines, toilet paper rolls, and bottles to make useful crafts such as gift bags, origami butterfly, origami rose, stationery stands and many more. 3|P age

Mid-Year School Holidays Learning Journeys Learning Journey 1: Butterfly Park and Insect Kingdom

Our students are always looking forward to the mid-year school holidays because of the line-up for funfilled learning journeys planned for them. Kicking off the holiday learning journeys is a visit to Butterfly Park and Insect Kingdom where the students get to establish a connection with Mother Nature. A stunning variety of butterflies, exotic insects, iguanas, parrots and many more greeted our students just as we entered the lush interactive zoo.

Learning Journey 2: Navy Museum

Next up, students went on a learning journey to Navy Museum where they were greeted by a majestic display of model submarines and ships of the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) in a water tank upon stepping foot in the museum. We were fortunate to have a navy veteran, Uncle Chia, share with us the early days of RSN, its history, Operation Thunderstorm, maritime security, old and modern weaponry used, naval medical service, naval logistics and lots more. 4|P age

Mid-Year School Holidays Learning Journeys Learning Journey 3: Esplanade Trail

Moving on, our students went for a fun-in-the-sun Esplanade Trail, where they were greeted by Singapore’s iconic and historical sites such as Esplanade, Marina Bay Sands, Merlion, Singapore Flyer, The Fullerton Hotel, Cavanagh Bridge and lots more. They learnt about the progression of Singapore, the changing shoreline, and the changes of the trail between Old Singapore and now.

Learning Journey 4: Guided Tour at Eurasian Heritage Centre

Students put their hands on their hips as they get ready to learn the moves of the traditional Eurasian folk dance.

To round up the last learning journey for the holidays, we went on a heritage trail at the Eurasian Heritage Centre. Students were introduced to the Eurasian heritage and community in Singapore, and they had an opportunity to learn the traditional Eurasian folk dance, as well as sample a well-known Eurasian delicacy, Sugee Cake. 5|P age

Seed Kindness Fund Junior Project 2018 Our Kindness Ambassadors making a difference!

Seed Kindness Fund Junior project is curated by Singapore Kindness Movement for students to promote the values of kindness and graciousness in their community. Our students decided to make a difference for the cleaners in our community, hence our theme was “Help clean up, make a difference!” As part of the project, students created posters that were displayed at Yew Tee Community Centre and neighbouring blocks, to convey the message of keeping our community clean. In addition, they created a pledge form for residents of Yew Tee to sign their petition that they would do their part to keep the neighbourhood clean. “Thank You” magnets made by our students were given out as a token of appreciation for residents who signed the petition. 6|P age

2018 FIFA World Cup™ Russia

Being the most exciting sporting tournament for football fans across the globe, our students were thrilled to be immersed in the 2018 FIFA World Cup™ Russia, which kicked off on 14th June 2018. By introducing this current affair to our students, they gained an insight into the most popular sport in the world, and Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), where they had the opportunity to learn more about geography, languages, mathematics, culture and history all in one.

With our 11th Peace Lantern Programme, the students put their creative flair to work and created 60 Peace Lanterns and 50 Paper Cranes. These will be sent to Hiroshima for the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony held on 6th August annually. This year’s programme commenced with lessons by Mr. Valentino Chan, senior teacher from YMCA School, whereby the students were taught artistic techniques in making the lanterns and an enriching account on war history. In relevance to this, the students were also introduced (re-introduced, for those who were present the previous years) to the story of Sadako Sasaki. 7|P age
