SPRING CLEANING WITH UNI-Y NUS On 21 July 2016, over 60 volunteers from University-YMCA NUS brought cheer to 18 elderly beneficiaries from Thye Hua Kwan Seniors Activity Centre @ Telok Blangah Crescent under the Y Spring Clean Programme where the volunteers helped to spring clean a total of 13 rental flats for the beneficiaries staying at blocks 3 and 4.
A HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE AT Y ARTS CHALLENGE To provide a platform for the Y STARS (YMCA Special Talents, Arts and Recreation Society) to show their talents and improve on their social interaction, 20 Y STARS beneficiaries were accompanied by 19 volunteers from Cold Storage for a Y Arts Challenge session at YMCA of Singapore on 13 August 2016 to create Singapore-themed clay tiles which included places of interest such as the Merlion, Gardens by the Bay and the Singapore flag. In celebration of the National Day spirit, the Y STARS were all dressed up in red, and a mini National Day celebration was held where they recited the national pledge and sang national day songs.

The art sessions for Y STARS are therapeutic and help the youth retain and exercise their fine motor skills. Having the opportunity to work on different art styles such as paint, clay and tie-dye encourages them to interact directly with the materials in their hands, aiming to develop their mark-making abilities. The individual artistic vision of the Y STARS always results in a fascinating variation among the final works and it is a beautiful glimpse into the extraordinary way they see the world.

YMCA PROMS @ THE PARK 2016 As part of 2016 President’s Challenge Volunteer Drive (PCVD), YMCA of Singapore held the annual YMCA Proms @ the Park concert and carnival on Saturday, 16 July to encourage more people – both at the corporate and individual level – to volunteer their time, and contribute ideas and skills to make Singapore a more caring and compassionate society. President Tony Tan Keng Yam, Patron-in-Chief of the YMCA of Singapore, graced the event. More than 160 corporate volunteers, 500 beneficiaries from 20 voluntary welfare organisations (VWOs) came together at the YMCA Proms @ the Park 2016 held at Empress Lawn for an afternoon of music and carnival games as well as a concert with performances put up by home grown talents and YMCA performing groups. Youth volunteers from the UniversityYMCA Singapore (Uni-Y) facilitated carnival games, while volunteer guides trained by the National Heritage Board led an educational adventure of discovery on a Civic District heritage trail. The annual YMCA Proms @ the Park aims to promote corporate social responsibility helps the PCVD to further strengthen its clarion call to volunteerism. Prior to the festivities at the concert and carnival grounds,
corporate volunteers are taken to the respective VWOs which their organisations are matched with to gain a better understanding of the needs and challenges faced by the beneficiaries they would be befriending during the programme. In addition to the corporate volunteers, over 100 people from all walks of life signed up to volunteer in various support roles including ushers, traffic marshals, logistics assistants and more.

ACTIVE AGEING WITH EXUBERANCE Organised over two days from 29 to 30 September 2016 at Toa Payoh HDB Hub, YMCA Silver Fiesta 2016 took on an active, healthy ageing approach by encouraging the elderly to participate in exercise workouts, sports and dance to experience a greater sense of well-being. healthily and happily within a caring society,” said Mr Lo Chee Wen, General Secretary, YMCA of Singapore.
“Through YMCA Silver Fiesta, we hope to bring cheer to the elderly by engaging them in various activities that are designed to promote the development of a healthier body, mind and spirit. It is also an opportunity for our young volunteers to develop closer bonds, build meaningful relationships and learn from the wealth of experiences and knowledge of our seniors as they take on the role of befrienders. At the end of the day, we hope that the elderly can age actively,
The event saw over 700 elderly folks from 18 senior activity centres come together for a day of fun. YMCA mobilised some 600 youth volunteers who interacted with the elderly and assisted at the event. Youths not only were exposed to intergenerational bonding, they were also empowered to become advocates in serving the Silver Community and promote active ageing among the elderly through sports, fitness and dance activities. Mr Baey Yam Keng, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, graced the event as the Guest-of-Honour.
Highlights of the event included: • Exercise Workout • Mass Dance • Music and Dance Therapy Exercises • Chinese opera • Digital Games booth The exercise workout sessions incorporated functional exercises which improved the seniors’ ability to complete daily activities. By working out together in the company of youth volunteers, the elderly bonded with both the young, their friends and met other like-minded individuals all while motivating one another in a fun environment. Mr Baey also participated in the workout together with the elderly. Tan Chin Tuan Foundation is the gold partner for Silver Fiesta 2016.

OVERCOMING OBSTACLES AT Y CAMP CHALLENGE A total of 63 beneficiaries from TOUCH Centre for Independent Living (TCIL) and TOUCH Ubi Hostel (TUH) participated in the September run of Y Camp Challenge together with 104 working adults and youth volunteers from junior colleges, polytechnics, universities and Institutes of Technical Education. The 3 day, 2 night camp was held from 2 to 4 September 2016 at Westwood Secondary School. Themed “A New Awakening”, participants went through a series of camp activities such as dragonboating, outdoor cooking and a campfire which focused on team building to promote social integration between beneficiaries and the volunteers. These activities also challenged the preconceived limits and boundaries of the beneficiaries so as to increase their confidence and resilience. Mr Teo Zi-Ming, Chairman, YMCA Programmes Committee graced the campfire as the Guest-of-Honour. In his address, he said. “As Y Camp Challenge progresses, we must remember the Y Camp Challenge spirit that has been passed down over the past 10 years and continuing. This spirit of togetherness will continue to motivate not just the volunteers and buddies, but also to our various stakeholders in continuing to serve and provide the support required for the success of the camp.” YMCA of Singapore would like to thank NTUC Fairprice Foundation and Tan Chin Tuan Foundation for their support for the camp.

A STRIKING DAY On 3 September 2016, 15 volunteers from Foo Kon Tan LLP brought 24 beneficiaries from Care Corner Teck Ghee Youth Centre and The Tent to Bukit Batok Civil Service Club for a bowling session under the Y Outing Programme where prizes were awarded to the best bowlers and volunteers and beneficiaries alike interacted over lunch.
THE STAGE IS THEIRS A total of 20 youth aged between 10 to 16 years old celebrated International Youth Day on 12 August 2016 at YMCA Project Bridge Youth Centre in Woodlands where they were given a platform to showcase their various talents in the performing arts. Assisting them were 8 volunteers from UniSIM who coordinated the session and 12 volunteer performers from 3 bands Ted Jorden, Empire Dock and PLAY who volunteered their time to perform some songs as well as pass on words of advice to the youth. Joining the action with 2 performances were the Centre’s very own youth bands, The Black Serenade and GT Band. Haziq bin Mohd, 15, from The Black Serenade said, “The event was a meaningful yet fun experience for my band. It was our first time performing together. I hope to have more opportunities to perform again.” AL Lee, a member from PLAY, added, “The event was meaningful and well executed by YMCA Project Bridge Youth Centre. We hope more can be done for the youth of today as such collaborations can bring colour and purpose to their lives.

STEPPING UP FOR A GOOD CAUSE In the months of July and August 2016, the 3 University-YMCAs (Uni-Y) in National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and Singapore Management University (SMU) held their annual Uni-Y Step Up Freshmen Orientation Camp at National Service Resort and Country Club (NSRCC), Home Team NS Bukit Batok and Singapore Management University respectively. The objectives of Uni-Y Step Up are to enthuse and unite youth toward positive societal action and to challenge each individual to step up to serve the community around them during their university years. Freshmen are exposed to the various social issues in Singapore through games and are given the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with beneficiaries through community service programmes which they attend. Freshmen from all 3 student chapters were given the opportunity to befriend people with intellectual disabilities. For many of them, it was their first time volunteering. Uni-Y NUS and NTU led the participants to volunteer for Y Spring Clean, where they cleaned the homes of the elderly and interacted with them. For Uni-Y SMU, freshmen interacted with families from Lakeside Family Services and the elderly from Ren Ci Hospital through singing and games at the Chinese and Japanese Gardens. LEADING THE WAY THROUGH LAMP Uni-Y’s Leadership and Management Programme (LAMP) is an annual gathering for potential Uni-Y executive committee (ExCo) members from the 3 student chapters from NUS, NTU, SMU and the YMCA Community Service Club (YCS) from SUTD. Held at SMU and YMCA of Singapore on 10 and 11 September 2016, 31 participants attended the 2-day programme which was planned and executed by 10 members of the tri Uni-Y Holistic Enrichment Department. Through various leadership frameworks, lively group discussions and participation in creative experiential learning, the participants were equipped with leadership competencies such as learning how to galvanise their teams to better serve the various committees to prepare them for leadership positions in Uni-Y and YCS in the future. The participants also had the opportunity to know more about Uni-Y Singapore through an informal interaction session with the current ExCo members.
HITOSTUBASHI DORMITORY VISITS YMCA OF SINGAPORE The visit by YMCA Hitotsubashi Dormitory took place on 26 September, where 4 members from the Dormitory visited YMCA of Singapore to learn more about the programmes at Uni-Y SMU. The international exchange ended off with a lunch hosted by Mr Lo Chee Wen, General Secretary and Ms Samantha Seah, Assistant General Secretary (Programmes), YMCA of Singapore, where they had the opportunity to taste Singapore's local delights while finding out about YMCA of Singapore and the Singaporean culture.

SPEAKING COMPETITION A STEPPING STONE TO A MORE CONFIDENT SELF 2016 marks the 10th and 30th anniversary of the YMCA Mandarin Speaking Awards (MSA) and YMCA Plain English Speaking Awards (PESA), which aim to develop students’ abilities to think and communicate effectively, sharpen their English and Mandarin speaking skills and build their self-confidence. The YMCA English and Mandarin Speaking Awards Ceremony was held at the Centre for Performing Arts, Anglo-Chinese Junior College on 16 September 2016. Mr Ng Chee Meng, Acting Minister for Education (Schools) & Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Transport graced the event as Guest-of-Honour. “As the next generation of leaders, our youth have a crucial role to play in shaping our future and the potential to create significant impact in the community. The YMCA Speaking Awards is part of YMCA’s endeavour, designed to help develop critical thinking and speaking skills among our youth, allowing them to broaden their experiences and provide them with new skills to see them through life. Through experiencing first-hand the challenges and demands of speech delivery, participants pick up valuable life skills, such as effective communication, precision of speech, confidence and clarity of thought under pressure,” said Eric Teng, President, YMCA of Singapore. The annual YMCA Plain English Speaking Awards and (PESA) and Mandarin Speaking Awards (MSA) are national level public speaking competitions aimed at students to sharpen their speaking skills and develop their abilities to think on their feet and communicate effectively. PESA and MSA also help to address the importance of cultivating good English and Mandarin speaking habits. MSA is organised annually by the YMCA of Singapore and co-organised by the Ministry of Education and Promote Mandarin Council while PESA is jointly organised by YMCA of Singapore, the Ministry of Education and the Speak Good English Movement. The competition venue is sponsored by National Library Board.

A total of 414 participants from 169 schools participated in the 30th YMCA Plain English Speaking Awards, while the 10th YMCA Mandarin Speaking Awards attracted some 231 participants from 62 schools, ranging from pre-school to tertiary institutions. Through the competitions, YMCA of Singapore hopes to impact and nurture youths and build up their self-confidence and exposure to public speaking, helping them to develop thinking and communication skills which will last them a lifetime.

STANDING UP FOR SINGAPORE On 8 August 2016, 99 students from YMCA School and over 150 staff from the YMCA Education Division were decked in red to celebrate Singapore’s 51st birthday at the National Day Observance Ceremony 2016 organised by YMCA School. They observed the National Anthem and Pledge Taking followed by a segment of “Recollections” which touched on the history of Singapore. Four students shared their reflections on living in Singapore and the programme continued with Mrs Helen Tan, Principal, YMCA School, reading the Education Minister’s National Day Message to the cohort. The ceremony rounded off with spirited singing of National Day songs and a workout to the NDP 2016 theme song “Tomorrow's Here Today”, led by Secondary Two students from YMCA School’s Excellence Class.
