COMMUNITY INTEGRATED HEALTH PROGRAMS YMCA DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM

The YMCA Diabetes Prevention program provides a supportive environment where participants work together in a small group to learn about healthier eating and increasing their physical activity in order to reduce their risk for developing diabetes. The program, which is led by a trained Lifestyle Coach in a classroom setting, is delivered over a 12-month period (16 weekly sessions, 4 bimonthly sessions and 6 monthly sessions). A YMCA membership is included for the first 16 weeks while enrolled in the program. Facility or Program Member $429 Physicians Plus Insurance currently covers the cost of the program and in 2018 Group Health Insurance will cover the cost of the program. Financial assistance is also available with proof of income.

Enhance®Fitness is geared toward but not limited to the older adult population. Those with a chronic condition, such as arthritis, need not worry; they will never have to do anything that hurts. Eligible adults aged 30-75 with a Parkinson’s diagnosis ride indoor cycles at 80-90 RPM, three times per week, 60 minutes each session, over the course of at least eight weeks (program can continue indefinitely as participants choose). YMCA staff are trained by certified indoor cycling instructors following the Pedaling for Parkinson’s protocol and monitor heart rate and exercise frequency.

HEALTHY WEIGHT AND YOUR CHILD

Developed by leading pediatric health and weight management specialists, the Y’s program uses evidence and clinical guidelines to engage families in education, healthy eating and physical activity. This one-year initiative seeks to reduce a child’s body mass index & waist circumference, reduce sedentary behaviors, increase physical activity and improve self-esteem. When families participate together, caregivers share in the health benefits.

MOVING FOR BETTER BALANCE

Participants in this 12-week, evidence-based, group program improve their strength, balance, flexibility and mobility through the slow and therapeutic movements of Tai Chi. This approach is designed to aid rehabilitation for those age 45 and older, especially those dealing with the effects of heart disease. Goals include fewer falls and fewer fall injuries.

YOUTH SPORTS: GENERAL INFORMATION LEAGUE STRUCTURE

YMCA leagues are designed for children ready for varied competition in a league setting. Leagues focus on teamwork, fair play and dedication over winning. A fair amount of travel and time commitment may be required for certain leagues. The YMCA registers players for leagues on a first-come, first-served basis. Player/coach requests are considered and honored when possible. However, registering your child after the registration deadline or once the program starts does not guarantee that your request will be honored. League rosters and schedules will be distributed via e-mail one week prior to the start of the league. Please make sure to provide an up-to-date e-mail when registering your child, as e-mail is the main source of league communication. Each league will have at least one to two practices prior to the start of games. Some programs (NFL Flag Football, Level 2 Intermediate Basketball and Level 3 Tri-County Basketball) will allow off-site practices with time, day and location determined by the coach. This information will be announced by the coach to the parents directly. For leagues that fill up quickly, the YMCA offers an early-bird registration period at lower costs. Teams will be formed immediately after this period. However, registration will still be open for anyone interested, but at higher costs. The registration fee includes a team jersey or t-shirt.

CLASS STRUCTURE

YMCA classes focus on basic fundamentals, skill development and most of all fun while allowing for smaller teams and more one-on-one attention. All classes will follow the regular YMCA Session Schedule that can be found within the Program Guide. Gymnastics and karate classes will be offered all sessions of the year. All classes will be taught by trained YMCA staff who will teach skills through fun games and scrimmage play. Children may be moved up or down a class based on their skill level at the discretion of the instructor or director. The YMCA will provide all equipment necessary for classes. However, some additional equipment may be required per instructor and parents will be notified via e-mail.

OUR MISSION

Our mission at the Y is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all. All of our programs are centered around our mission and our four core values of character development: caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Your child will learn about these core values and how they apply to their lives on and off the field. We hope you will take time at home to reinforce these values and their importance.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Without the involvement of parents, family and the community, YMCA sports would not be possible. We are always looking for volunteers to help as coaches, assistant coaches, scoreboard operators and more. We provide all coaches with trainings/meetings, practice assistance, e-mail support and coaching handbooks/manuals. All on-site practices will be supervised by trained YMCA staff there to provide assistance. Though YMCA personnel cannot coach teams, we can provide as much assistance as needed. All coaches are required to submit a volunteer application and proper YMCA volunteer paperwork (including criminal and child abuse background checks) prior to the start of the program. If you or someone you know is interested in volunteering as a league coach, please indicate so when registering and provide the requested contact information. Volunteer applications can be located at each branch or online at www.ymcadanecounty.org/volunteer.

Program members may also call the sports weather hotline for up-to-date information about cancellations at the numbers listed below. Programs that are canceled due to inclement weather are not guaranteed to be made up. However, system credits may be applied to accounts after multiple cancellations.

In Water Acclimation, Water Movement, and Water Stamina, students are taught the recommended skills for all to have around water including safe water habits, underwater exploration and how to swim to safety and exit in the event of falling into a body of water. Activities, games, and drills geared to reinforce learning, are utilized heavily as students progress in the skill-based approach to swimming. PRESCHOOL LEVEL 1/WATER ACCLIMATION:

PRESCHOOL LEVEL 2/WATER MOVEMENT: Encourages forward movement in water and basic self-rescue skills performed independently. Prerequisites: Level 1 Skills.

PRESCHOOL LEVEL 3/WATER STAMINA: Develops intermediate self-rescue skills performed at longer distances than in previous stages. Prerequisites: Level 2 Skills.

PRESCHOOL LEVEL 4/STROKE INTRODUCTION: Introduces basic stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and reinforces water safety through treading water and elementary backstroke. Prerequisites: Level 3 Skills.
