YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

Nurturing the potential of every child and teen. YOUTH SPORTS GENERAL INFORMATION LEAGUE STRUCTURE

YMCA leagues are designed for children ready for varied competition in a league setting. Leagues focus on teamwork, fair play and dedication over winning. A fair amount of travel and time commitment may be required for certain leagues. The YMCA registers players for leagues on a first-come, first-serve basis. Player/coach requests are considered and honored when possible. However, registering your child after the registration deadline or once the program starts does not guarantee that your request will be honored. League rosters and schedules will be distributed via e-mail one week prior to the start of the league. Please make sure to provide an up-to-date e-mail when registering your child, as e-mail is the main source of league communication. All leagues will have at least one to two weeks of practices prior to the start of games. Practice time, day and location will be determined by both the director and the team coach and will be communicated to all families prior to the start of the league. For leagues that fill up quickly, the YMCA offers an early-bird registration period at lower costs. Teams will be formed after this period. However, registration will still be open for anyone interested, but at higher costs.

CLASS STRUCTURE

YMCA classes focus on basic fundamentals, skill development and most of all fun while allowing for smaller teams and more oneon-one attention. All classes will follow the regular YMCA Session Schedule that can be found within the Program Guide. Gymnastics and karate classes will be offered all sessions of the year. All classes will be taught by trained YMCA staff who will teach skills through fun games and scrimmage play. Children may be moved up or down a class based on their skill level at the discretion of the instructor or director. The YMCA will provide all equipment necessary for classes. However, some additional equipment may be required per instructor and parents will be notified via e-mail.

YOUTH FITNESS

Utilize circuit stations for beginner-level strength and endurance training with a certified personal trainer. The trainer will guide you through a structured workout incorporating cardio machines, resistance bands, medicine balls, steps, body weight and flexibility exercises. A great class for any youth looking to challenge their bodies outside of school or looking to stay in shape between sporting activities. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Without the involvement of parents, family and the community, YMCA sports would not be possible. We are always looking for volunteers to help as coaches, assistant coaches, scoreboard operators and more. We provide all coaches with trainings/ meetings, practice assistance, e-mail support and coaching handbooks/manuals. All on-site practices and games will be supervised by trained YMCA staff who are there to provide assistance when needed. Though YMCA personnel cannot coach teams, we can provide as much assistance as needed. All coaches are required to submit an online volunteer application and proper YMCA volunteer paperwork (including criminal and child abuse background checks) prior to the start of the program. If you or someone you know is interested in volunteering as a league coach, please indicate so when registering and provide the requested contact information. Volunteer applications can be located at each branch or online at www.ymcadanecounty.org/volunteer.

WEATHER POLICY

The YMCA reserves the right to cancel a program due to inclement (severe) weather as it relates to safety. The decision to cancel will be made by the youth sports director overseeing the specific program. Every effort will be made to notify all participants of the cancellation at least one hour before the start of the program. Program members may also call the sports weather hotline for up-to-date information about cancellations at the numbers listed below. Programs that are canceled due to inclement weather are not guaranteed to be made up. However, system credits may be applied to accounts after multiple cancellations. BROWN BAG PROGRAM

Every day, many people in our community—children and adults alike—don’t have enough to eat. Homelessness, job loss and unexpected expenses can all cause food insecurity. The YMCA of Dane County is here to help bridge the gap with a new Brown Bag meal program. WHAT? The Y’s new Brown Bag program provides a free, healthy meal to any adult or child who needs one. Brown bag meal contents will vary weekly but generally include a sandwich, a piece of fruit, some veggies and milk. WHERE? Lussier Family East YMCA, 711 Cottage Grove Road, Madison. Staffed by Y volunteers, our Brown Bag cart will be stationed outside the front entrance in nice weather and in the main lobby in poor weather. WHEN? Every Tuesday and Thursday, 5:00–7:00 p.m. HOW? Drop by the East Y, grab a brown bag meal and eat. It’s that simple. There are no eligibility requirements such as YMCA membership, program participation, proof of need ... nothing. Just show up. At the Y, we’re building a better us by keeping people in our community from falling through the cracks. The YMCA of Dane County is an equal-opportunity provider.

SUPPORT OUR CAUSE: DONATE OR VOLUNTEER!

Dane County faces new challenges that create a greater need for our services. Our Annual Campaign uses 100% of donations to directly support financial assistance and program subsidies.
