YOUTH SPORTS: GENERAL INFORMATION LEAGUE STRUCTURE

YMCA leagues are designed for children ready for varied competition in a league setting. Leagues focus on teamwork, fair play and dedication over winning. A fair amount of travel and time commitment may be required for certain leagues. The YMCA registers players for leagues on a first-come, first-served basis. Player/coach requests are considered and honored when possible. However, registering your child after the registration deadline or once the program starts does not guarantee that your request will be honored. League rosters and schedules will be distributed via e-mail one week prior to the start of the league. Please make sure to provide an up-to-date e-mail when registering your child, as e-mail is the main source of league communication. Each league will have at least one to two practices prior to the start of games. Some programs (NFL Flag Football, Level 2 Intermediate Basketball and Level 3 Tri-County Basketball) will allow off-site practices with time, day and location determined by the coach. This information will be announced by the coach to the parents directly. For leagues that fill up quickly, the YMCA offers an early-bird registration period at lower costs. Teams will be formed immediately after this period. However, registration will still be open for anyone interested, but at higher costs. The registration fee includes a team jersey or t-shirt.

CLASS STRUCTURE

YMCA classes focus on basic fundamentals, skill development and most of all fun while allowing for smaller teams and more one-on-one attention. All classes will follow the regular YMCA Session Schedule that can be found within the Program Guide. Gymnastics and karate classes will be offered all sessions of the year. All classes will be taught by trained YMCA staff who will teach skills through fun games and scrimmage play. Children may be moved up or down a class based on their skill level at the discretion of the instructor or director. The YMCA will provide all equipment necessary for classes. However, some additional equipment may be required per instructor and parents will be notified via e-mail.

OUR MISSION

Our mission at the Y is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all. All of our programs are centered around our mission and our four core values of character development: caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Your child will learn about these core values and how they apply to their lives on and off the field. We hope you will take time at home to reinforce these values and their importance.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Without the involvement of parents, family and the community, YMCA sports would not be possible. We are always looking for volunteers to help as coaches, assistant coaches, scoreboard operators and more. We provide all coaches with trainings/meetings, practice assistance, e-mail support and coaching handbooks/manuals. All on-site practices will be supervised by trained YMCA staff there to provide assistance. Though YMCA personnel cannot coach teams, we can provide as much assistance as needed. All coaches are required to submit a volunteer application and proper YMCA volunteer paperwork (including criminal and child abuse background checks) prior to the start of the program. If you or someone you know is interested in volunteering as a league coach, please indicate so when registering and provide the requested contact information. Volunteer applications can be located at each branch or online at www.ymcadanecounty.org/volunteer.

WEATHER POLICY

The YMCA reserves the right to cancel a program due to inclement (severe) weather as it relates to safety. The decision to cancel will be made by the youth sports director overseeing the specific program. Every effort will be made to notify all participants of the cancellation at least one hour before the start of the program. Program members may also call the sports weather hotline for up-to-date information about cancellations at the numbers listed below. Programs that are canceled due to inclement weather are not guaranteed to be made up. However, system credits may be applied to accounts after multiple cancellations. FRIDAY NIGHTS AT THE Y

$24 $48

All summer long, teens 13-18 can visit our East, Northeast and West locations from 8:00-11:30pm on Friday nights for basketball, volleyball, dodgeball, dancing, socializing, enrichment and more. Since it’s beginning, Friday Nights has been a partnership between the Y and local public safety workers to help build relationships and bridge age and racial gaps between public servants and young people in our community. Once again this year, Madison police and firefighters (at East and West); Sun Prairie police, firefighters and EMS (at Northeast); and other community and business leaders will be on hand every week to interact, play games and mentor our youth. A YMCA membership is not required to participate, but full summer memberships are available at no cost to those who qualify (with a parent/guardian signature). Friday Nights at the Y runs June 2-August 18, and all teens looking for fun, healthy activity in a safe place on summer Friday nights are invited to join us!
