DISCOVERY DAY CAMP AGES 5-13*

Discovery Day Camp (DDC) is about learning skills, developing character, making friends with a focus on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. DDC is the true outdoor experience, that allows children to explore what nature has to offer. Rain or shine children engage in hiking, fishing, fort building, and many other camp activities. Our summer day camps teach independence, responsibility, environmental respect and the passion for nature. *Must have completed Kindergarten to attend DROP OFF AND PICK UP AT NORTHEAST YMCA1470 DON SIMON DRIVE, SUN PRAIRIE. Children are transported daily to Lion’s Club Clubhouse for camp. Lion’s Club Clubhouse-Elder Road, Sun Prairie.

Summer has arrived! We will spend this week getting to know each other and camp by playing some games and exploring all of camp.

Get ready to become an outdoor explorer. This week we will become even more familiar with camp and all of the adventure it has to offer, including building up our fort areas.

As summer comes to a close we will spend our final week together doing ALL of our camp favorites. All of our favorite games and activities from the summer will be brought back into one final hurrah!

You have five days to complete the race. Once you have your 1st clue work with your group to make it as far as you can. Watch out for pit stops, detours, and challenges along the way.

WHAT IS Y5210?

The numerals 5210 reflect the daily guidelines recommended by the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics to help reduce the obesity epidemic in youth.

Y5210 is an awareness program branded at the YMCA which is rapidly growing in popularity and success throughout YMCAs and schools in the US to encourage children to have: • 5 fruits and veggies a day • No more than 2 hours of screen time a day (Adults 2 hours or less outside of the work day) • At least 1 hour of physical activity (Adults - at least 30 minutes of physical activity) • 0 sugar sweetened drinks Obesity rates have more than doubled over the last twenty years, and the obesity rate in adolescents has tripled according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The obesity rate among children continues to increase due to lack of physical activity and unhealthy eating habits. Obesity increases the risk for serious health conditions like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol — all once considered exclusively adult diseases.

To start the summer campers will learn the fundamentals of what summer camp is all about. We will establish our cabins and begin sharing and adding to our camp traditions.

Become the superhero you always dreamed of becoming. Bring your imagination this week as we create costumes, stories, and adventures to become your very own superhero. You will go through a week-long superhero training camp in which you’ll create your secret identity, test your skills, and build your selfconfidence.

TIME TRAVELERS July 18-22

Come explore the wonders of past and future periods as we travel through time by decades, centuries, and millenniums. We will visit discos, the wild west, distant planets, and dinosaurs on a few of our stops.

Campers will showcase their talents in every way possible. To celebrate the summer, everyone is invited out to camp for an evening of fun for our annual Family Night, so don’t miss this week.

HEROES WEEK June 13-17

Children will get to put on their superhero masks and capes and start the summer off with the excitement of creating their own superheroes while making stories, learning about characteristics of a hero, and continue their learning and exploration of skills to prepare for Kindergarten.

SPACE June 20-24

Let’s explore planets, stars, and the people who explore them.

Children will gain an understanding of the world beyond Earth and create projects in art and science form to demonstrate their knowledge.

INVESTIGATORS AND INVENTORS June 27-July 1

Children will gain an understanding of engineering, robotics, and work on inventing something to help the future.

MINI METEOROLOGISTS July 5-8 (Closed July 4)

Let’s learn about clouds, tornadoes, hurricanes, and other aspects of weather. Children will make their own weather broadcast at the end of the week.

MUSIC MANIA July 11-15

Children will be exposed to genres of music, musical instruments, and how music varies around the globe. Children will build their own instruments, play instruments on site, and listen to live, as well as recorded music.

UNDER THE CIRCUS TENT August 1-5

Come one, come all for a circus adventure. Children will create their own circus showcase: Parachutes, balloons, balancing, hula hoops, and explore the adventure of being a clown.

WORLD TRAVELERS August 8-12

Let’s fly around the world and get to know foods and places to visit around the globe. Children will also “create” their own countries.

DR. SEUSS August 15-19

Children use their imagination to create a world based on the stories of Dr. Seuss. They will invent their own stories in the pattern of Dr. Seuss and dress up as their favorite characters in Dr. Seuss stories.

A-Z ACTIVITIES August 22-26

Join us for a week of activities starting with acting and ending with Zumba®. Children will develop their own list of activities they want to accomplish for each letter of the alphabet and those activities will be added to the teacher-planned activities.

OLYMPICS August 29-31

Children will explore sports and have a chance to display their talents throughout the week through team and individual challenges.

ANIMAL ADVENTURES July 18-22

Let’s explore animals who live in the ocean, forest, and on farms. Children will learn about environments in which the animals live, and how animals are similar and different.

BY LAND AND BY SEA July 25-29

All aboard for an adventure learning about trains, boats, planes, and cars. Children will have a chance to build model sailboats and see how well they float, as well as race toy cars.

TYPICAL DAY AT CAMP

TYPICAL DAY AT CAMP Each day of camp brings an exciting new adventure for your camper. The following is a sneak peek at your campers day at YMCA Camp. Typical days vary per site.

6:30/7:00-9:00am Campers are offered a choice of structured activities and snack in Before Camp care. At 8:30am campers are transported to camp if needed.

9:00-9:30am The day kicks off with an opening ceremony where your camper will learn the 4 core values. Your camper will sing their hearts out, join in a camp-wide game, giggle at a staff skit, test their brain with food for thought or even give their staff a messy treat!

9:30am-3:30pm After opening ceremony, campers will start their days activities centered around the weeks theme.

One to two times a week, your camper will cool off while swimming. Times and days differ by site.

We designate some time for our campers to take a break and enjoy some quiet cooldown time. Campers can read a book, play board games, take on an art project or participate in spirit-mind-body talks.

3:30-4:00pm After an exciting day filled with amazing activities, groups will gather for their afternoon snack. Similar to the morning, groups will enjoy their snack and prepare for the day’s closing ceremonies which will include a wrap up of the core values represented during the day. At 4:00pm, campers are transported back to drop off location.

4:00-6:00pm Following the Closing Ceremony, a widerange of camper choice activities are set up offering different choices for different ages.

Campers have time to catch up with each other and play games before they are picked up, head home, and are ready to return for another great day!

• REGISTRATION IS AVAILABLE March 1 ONLINE! For your convenience, we are able to offer the option to set up weekly payments, either bank draft from a savings or checking account or through Discover®, American Express®, Visa® and MasterCard®.

• Each week of camp must be paid in full 2 weeks prior to the start date of program.

• $25 registration fee per child per program type. Facility members will save $25 and pay no registration fee if you register before April 30.

• $10 per week deposit, applied towards weekly fee.

Deposits are forfeited when dropping a week.

• Registration fee and deposit are NON-REFUNDABLE and NON-TRANSFERABLE. Registrations fees and deposits are due at time of registration.

• $20 charge for changes to schedules.

• Registration will not be accepted by families with balance due from YMCA programs. Please

make payment immediately or contact the Child Care Administrative Office to make payment arrangements. Failure to pay on scheduled time may jeopardize your child’s camp enrollment. Full payment is required for children to attend camp.

WISCONSIN SHARES (formerly known as W2) • Wisconsin Shares is a Child Care Subsidy program that authorizes the payment of a portion of camp fees through a third party.

• Registration will not be accepted by families with balance due from any YMCA services.

• Camps located in Madison accept City of Madison Funding.

YMCA FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE • YMCA financial assistance is available to families to qualify.

• Must be approved prior to registration for discount to appear on account at time of registration.

HELPFUL TIPS WHAT TO WEAR

RAINY DAYS

• Tennis shoes/hiking boots with socks • Please do not wear sandals or open-toed shoes

• Rain ponchos are suggested. We go to camp unless severe weather is a threat. There are shelters at each camp. Rainy day hikes and activities are fun when dressed appropriately!

DAILY BACK PACK ITEMS • Make sure to label items with a permanent marker!

• Extra clothing • Water bottle • Healthy sack lunch • Swimsuit and towel • Optional items-Plastic bag for wet suit and towel, comb/ brush, goggles, ear or nose plugs
