MEET YOUR PRESENTERS Jessica Power Cyr

Jessica Power Cyr, MSc, BScKin, CSEP-CEP, ACSM-CES, AFLCA Trainer, FMS Level 2, is a fitness and mind body guru, leading industry educator, programmer and public speaker. Jessica brings a wealth of information, charisma and personality to each session making her classes fun and easy to learn from. You’ll never walk away bored from one of her sessions and you WILL learn something new or change your perspective on something old. Jess is fortunate to be working closely with industry leaders at Mount Royal University, CSEP and the AFLCA to provide you with industry trends that are safe and effective. Get ready to “Get Powered Up!” in one of Jessica’s sessions!

Suzette O’Byrne

Suzette has been active in the fitness industry since 1984. Suzette is a master trainer with Keiser Corporation and a TRX* senior trainer who specializes in yoga therapy, indoor cycling and personal training. She is the Recreation Manager at the Glencoe Club in Calgary and the author of Yoga for the Core: Finding Stability in an Unstable Environment. Suzette holds a BSc. In Kinesiology and a designation as trainer of fitness leaders from AFLCA.

Catherine Nelson-Reid

As Studio Director & Owner of Bodhi Tree Yoga Centre, Catherine offers her love of pranayam (breath work) and meditation as a tool to reconnect - bringing ourselves back into wholeness. A teacher for 12 years, Catherine is known for guiding students into a deep sense of coherence and resonance - leaving them clear and reconnected to themselves. It’s from this place, Catherine believes we tap into our true nature of joy and ease. Join Catherine for a deeply connecting experience of breath and awareness that will leave you refreshed and revitalized.

Allison Smith

Allison has combined her long-standing love for yoga with voiceover — and now holds Yoga & Voice workshops at her home-away-from-home — Bodhi Tree Yoga Centre in Calgary, where she has practiced yoga for over 10 years. These workshops (by invite only) explore the often neglected importance of voice in the Yoga Teacher Training paradigm; Allison lends her expertise in vocal care and shares her fascination with human speech with yoga teachers of all levels, both in the workshop setting and through 1-on-1 coaching. Raising awareness of the dangers of Upspeak, Vocal Fry, Valley Girl, and the dreaded Kardashian, Allison will take your teaching practice to the next level.

Andy Kitchen

Andy is a Certified Exercise Physiologist, Strength and Conditioning Specialist and a dryland and aquatic fitness instructor. Some of her credentials include BScKin, CSEP-CEP, NSCA-CSCS and AFLCA. She has specific interests in movement mechanics, endurance sport and the Active for Life principals. Andy believes in exercise and staying fit for quality of life; having the physical ability to do whatever you want; feeling good; loving how you look; and maintaining positive mental health and stress management. The thing that will always keep her in the fitness industry: the joy of working with someone to help them accomplish physical goals beyond their wildest dreams.

Scott Andrews

Scott Andrews is currently the Strength & Conditioning Director at the Gray Family Eau Claire YMCA and has worked in the fitness industry for over 12 years. He is also a Registered Nutritionist, CrossFit Level 1 instructor, NCSA-CPT Personal Trainer and a YMCA Trainer and has taken various training through the C.H.E.K. Institute. Scott is currently pursuing his Nutritional Science Degree. He has taught Fitness and Sports Nutrition at the Institution of Holistic Nutrition. He has worked with clients ranging from those recovering from chemo therapy to ultra-endurance athletes. He is locally recognized as an expert in the field of performance conditioning and weight loss.

Judi Weaver

Judi has been a group fitness instructor for 18 years, taking her original YMCA qualification in the UK before moving to Canada. She is certified in Choreography, Aquatics, Group Strength Training, Fusion (yoga, pilates, strength fitness mix), Older Adults and Tabata Bootcamp. Judi particularly enjoys teaching older adults and has completed a Bone Fit certification to help those participants with Osteoporosis. She endeavours to bring joy to all her classes and loves encouraging everyone on their fitness journey. When she has spare time, Judi can be found making greeting cards.

Lana Asuchak

With an M.A. in Exercise Psychology and a Bachelor of Physical Education, Lana is a certified fitness trainer and speaker who has worked with industry and community influencers, including the University of Alberta, SAIT, World Health Club, and the Speakers Bureau of Alberta. She is a sessional instructor in the Physical Education Department at Mount Royal University, specializing in stress management, and health and fitness. Lana is the founder of LA Interactive, a mobile fitness training business and The Energy Advantage: Energy for Success, Wellness, Change (a speaking and coaching business emphasizing customized stress and energy solutions).

Joan Carlson:

Joan has been working in many different areas in the Fitness, Health and Wellness industry for over 30 years; group and individual fitness, trainer of fitness leaders, program development and facility management to name a few. She loves leading a variety of different classes but when not teaching, Joan spends much of her time working with people of all ages as a fitness/wellness coach. Whatever the role may be, the goal is to help people understand the best ways to optimize their health and performance through the practice of balancing training and recovery.

Cassidy Sherrington

After numerous injuries from outdoor sports such as mountain biking and skiing, Cassidy - B.Kin, TRX, YMCA - decided to go to university to learn how the body works so that she could fix it! She became fascinated by the body’s ability to adapt to specific needs through proper exercise prescription. Post-graduation, she worked as a Kinesiologist applying a mixture of exercises and soft tissue work to rehabilitate various injuries and chronic conditions. Cassidy is now the Program Manager at the Shawnessy YMCA and dedicates herself to helping people through their health journey.

Andrea Lawrence:

Andrea Lawrence is a graduate of the Personal Fitness Trainer Diploma program from Mount Royal University. She has completed her CSEP-CPT (Canadian Society for Exercise Physiologist – Certified Personal Trainer), and is registered under Exercise Is Medicine Canada (EIMC Level 1) which is a CSEP initiative to promote physical activity, health promotion and wellness across Canada. Andrea started at the YMCA as a practicum student, then worked as a floor monitor and personal trainer, and is now the Strength & Conditioning Director at Shawnessy YMCA.

Kitty Fung

Kitty Fung works with Alberta Health Services as a Kinesiologist in the Alberta Healthy Living Exercise program. She has been working in the Kinesiology field since 2012 in different areas of adaptive fitness. It is her passion to be able to help empower people of all abilities to be able to enjoy physical activity; safely and happily.

Jennie Petersen:

Jennie Petersen, MSc., BKin. is the Program General Manager for YMCA Calgary, providing support for the development of high quality programming for children, youth and adults in the community. She has over 15 years of experience in developing programs that encourage physical activity and health and has worked in a variety of fields including recreation, sport, and community development. Jennie is also a YMCA Cycling Instructor and is currently working on completing her YMCA Fitness Trainer certification. She loves any activity that keeps her on the edge of adventure, including backpacking, mountain biking, back country skiing and travelling.

Jocelyn Santos:

Jocelyn. BPE, MHK, CSCS, completed her studies at the University of Calgary and the University of British Columbia, respectively. She has worked extensively in training individuals from all fitness levels - from recreational to professional. As a guest speaker, she has lectured at numerous sportspecific training conferences and clinics. Jocelyn is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). She is currently the General Manager at the South Health Campus YMCA.

Vincenzo Buono:

Vincenzo Buono has completed a Bachelor of Education in 2007 from the University of Alberta.

He has worked in the health and wellness field since 2000 helping a variety of individuals from varying backgrounds and abilities. He is passionate about helping customers at the South Health Campus YMCA have positive experience that provide life-long impact.

Kaia Kjar:

Kaia Kjar has been teaching various forms of physical activity for over 20 years. Her love of teaching began with cross country skiing and swimming and has expanded over the years to include group fitness, personal training and fitness leadership. She is now certified in Group Aquatic Fitness, Group Strength, Yoga, Pilates and Personal Training, with additional education and experience in Pre & Post Natal Fitness and Bootcamps on land and in the water. She is a certified YMCA Trainer and Trainer Educator providing mentorship to new instructors and trainers. Kaia’s focus is on helping people develop physical and emotional awareness to improve form and function by tuning into the mind and the body and understanding their messages.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS Fun, Fit, and Physical with Andrea Lawrence Take a Physical Literacy approach in the world of adult fitness. Learn to channel your inner kid and have fun with your workouts, while utilizing Fundamental Movement Skills (running, jumping, throwing etc.) to improve all aspects of fitness and performance.

Powerlifting 101 with Scott Andrews Learn proper technique and how to properly cue when teaching barbell squats & barbell deadlifts. You will also learn important modifications to the traditional lifts. The sessions will be hands on, and you will learn tips and tricks to help your clients/participants to maximize their efforts in the conditioning centre.

Sports Nutrition with Scott Andrews Learn the importance of pre and post whole food nutrition, as well as proper timing and macronutrient intake to help with muscle recovery and performance. Attendees will have a better understanding of food and its impact on fitness.

Behavior Change – and the role of the fitness professional with Joan Carlson People look to fitness professionals all of the time for support as they go through their intended process of change. We will explore what this looks like in ourselves and in our environment so we can help support the process for change in the people with whom we teach and train.

Communication, Feedback and Cueing: Is there an emoji for that? With Joan Carlson Remember those days when we didn’t have microphones in fitness classes? Leading a class involved more than verbal cues and we need inject some of the non-verbal cues back into our teaching, coaching and training. Non-verbal cues are crucial if the microphone doesn’t work, you have someone in your class with hearing challenges, or you have participants who speak a different language.

ABSolutely Awesome with Andy Kitchen Breathe new life into the core component of your classes by rethinking ‘the core’ and how to engage it in the water.

Pre and Post Natal Fitness Guidelines with Kaia Kjar Learn the basic fitness guidelines and considerations for working with women during pregnancy and after childbirth. This course will provide an overview of physical activity guidelines (SOGC & ACOG), physiological changes during and after pregnancy, common physical and emotional sensitivities, appropriate exercise modifications and important questions to ask every pregnant/post-natal woman before prescribing exercise.

Going through the SIDE door: Corrective exercises from a NEW direction with Suzette O’Byrne Often when we work with clients we find areas that will not respond to the typical approach. The front door becomes locked, rigid and impassible. Discover corrective exercises that take a different approach through this practical and exploratory workshop. Find new methods for dealing with chronic physical issues through the side door.

Physical Literacy: A Lifelong Journey with Jennie Peterson Physical Literacy is the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life.

Not all adults grow up having the opportunity to develop the key fundamental movement skills that help them become or stay active. In this interactive session, learn practical tips and tricks for keeping your adult participants motivated and coming back for more fun in your classes!

Get Your Game On … In the WATER! With Kaia Kjar (bring your swimsuit!)

Add some friendly competition and ramp up the FUN in your aquatic fitness classes. This workshop will provide practical examples of games and drills you can play using the skills and movement patterns learned in the aquatic fitness environment. Increase interaction and teamwork between participants, challenge strength & aerobic endurance and leave your participants begging for more!

Building a Balanced Aquatic Fitness Workout with Kaia Kjar (bring your swimsuit!)

This workshop will review the components of a well-balanced aquatic fitness class. Learn how to build a complete workout in the water that challenges cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, core stability and endurance of opposing muscle groups. You’ll learn to develop a class in a way that flows well, keeps participants moving through transitions and helps develop body awareness and mental focus.

Keiser Cycling-Powered up Intervals with Suzette O’Byrne Give your intervals some substance by incorporating power goals. Ensure your participants identify a realistic challenge that is unique for them on any given day and learn how to incorporate their goals into each step of the class. This workshop is loaded with power packed interval drills that will keep your participants puffing for more.

Circuit Training, Fitness Levels and How to Modify Exercises with Jocelyn Santos Learn how to deliver a safe and effective circuit class that can be tailored to all fitness levels.

These modifications can be easily implemented ‘on the go.’ You will learn a number of exercises with modifications and be able to implement into your next class. Be prepared to break a sweat!

Program Design: Effective programming for Personal Trainers with Jocelyn Santos Let’s start with a brief overview on the scientific principles of program design. Add in other ingredients – motivation, goal-setting, scheduling and fun. Mix it all together and find a way to pull it all together, in a time efficient manner for fun and effective programs for every client!

The Active Older Adult with Kitty Fung An interactive older active adult session, speaking about pre-cautions and modifications to make exercise safe and fun for exercisers of all ages.

Ride On: Techniques for Effective Cueing and Coaching on the Bike with Jennie Peterson The cycle industry has changed a lot over the years and with the rise in numbers of cycle studios, there is contention over what safe and effective movements look like in an indoor cycle class. In this interactive session, we will review basic anatomy in relation to safe bike set-up, cueing for good cycling alignment and tricks & drills for effectively coaching your participants to maintain strong riding posture.

Correcting Exercise with Vincenzo Buono In this session you will learn how to cue properly when working with clients in your sessions. This will give them the confidence to workout with you and increase their body awareness. Using easy and simple language will assist you clients in working out more efficiently.

Power Pilates Jessica will take your Pilates training to the next level by integrating standing core and balance patterns to the traditional Pilates workout. The focus is to challenge all 3-dimensions of the body; the sagittal, frontal and transverse planes of motion through functional movements. The goal of this session is to define fundamental movements and basic motor control within a pattern.

Virtual Insanity with Jessica Power Cyr Take your indoor cycling class to the NEXT level in this Virtual Insanity experience. Jessica will take the idea of music in your classes to the next level and provide you a fun visual experience of your favorite cycling songs. The workshop will include virtual rides, music videos, cycling clips and specialized lighting! This workshop will review cycling guidelines, profiles and drills plus provide you with ideas on class design and delivery. Ready for some insanity? Get ‘POWERED UP’ with Jess!

Bone Fit with Judi Weaver Osteoporosis is a condition that causes bones to become thin and porous, decreasing bone strength and leading to increased risk of breaking a bone. You might be surprised to find out how many participants in your classes have this condition. Osteoporosis is not just diagnosed in older adults - this disease can strike at any age. This workshop plans to give a brief overview of Osteoporosis and to look at safe and effective exercise programming for this demographic.

Choreography ABC with Lana Asuchak This lesson in choreography will give you many ideas and options that you probably never even thought of, making an athletic (A) pattern from a basic (B) pattern or taking a basic pattern (B) and spicing it up to make it a more choreographed (C) pattern. You will learn ways to simply spice up traditional fitness patterns such as squats, step touches, and lunges that will inspire your participants and keep them coming back time and time again.

The Voice with Allison Smith Allison Smith - an internationally-known voice talent, is a long-time yoga and fitness practitioner and passionate about enhancing and expanding the voices and vocal styles of teachers. She sheds light on common “bad habits” of speech and raises awareness of common pitfalls which can short-circuit an otherwise strong teaching paradigm.

Anatomy and Exercise with Cassidy Sherrington An interactive workshop covering the major muscles and bones of the body and how they work during exercise. As you learn terminology you will also apply the knowledge by working through exercise program design, incorporating a variety of different muscle groups, biomechanics, and planes of motion as well as understanding the bodies’ responses and adaptations to a range of exercise conditions.
