Am I prepared for my visit to the Y?

Do I have Photo ID? Everyone aged 12 years and older require photo ID or a YMCA Membership card to access any YMCA location.

(Acceptable photo ID includes: driver’s license, student or work ID, passport, or your YMCA Membership card.)

Did I bring my own lock?

We recommend you lock all personal belongings when you visit the YMCA. Please bring a lock with you to secure your items.

Do I need a towel?

Towel service is available at some YMCA locations. Extra Memberships include unlimited towel service.

Daily service: $2/towel Monthly service: $12.50/month

Am I prepared to take a swim test?

All swimmers 13 years and under are required to take a swim test before entering any of our pools. Our swim test helps determine swim level, if a life jacket is required, and helps us better monitor swimmers in the water.

Have I checked the YMCA Calgary App? The YMCA Calgary App is an easy way to stay informed. Use the app to view schedules, class descriptions, times and locations, as well as class cancellations/changes. We recommend checking schedules for changes before you arrive.

We deliver quality care and play-based learning experiences to help children build foundational social and physical literacy skills, as well as a spark for life-long learning.

Children are led through the YMCA’s values of respect, responsibility, honesty and caring in a fun, safe and nurturing environment.

All YMCA caregivers and educators have an up-to-date police security clearance, first aid and CPR certification.

Our educators also have post-secondary education in Early Childhood Development and are certified by Alberta Human Services.

CHILD CARE AGE:12M - 6Y (FULL-DAY CARE) Set your child up for success in this well-rounded care and learning program. YMCA Calgary’s licensed child care service provides full-day care for children aged 12 months to 6 years.

Our child care educators use the YMCA Playing to Learn curriculum, which aligns with primary school benchmarks and helps children learn and discover through fun activities and creative play. We aim to foster enthusiasm and spark a life-long love of learning in your child. * Note: As of Summer /Fall 2019, ALL of our child care centres are full and waitlists are capped. Any availability changes will be communicated on our website.

CHILD MINDING AGE: 6 WEEKS - 8Y (SHORT-TERM CARE) You'll have peace of mind knowing your child is being well cared for while you work on your health and well-being. YMCA Calgary’s Child Minding service provides short-term care for infants and children. Your child will have engaging learning experiences that make his or her visit to the YMCA as fun and beneficial as yours! Child Minding must be booked in advance.

Child Minding for infants and toddlers (6 weeks to 35 months) is FREE for YMCA Members

YMCA MULTI-DAY PRESCHOOL AGE: 3Y - 5Y Help your child get a great start in learning! In this program, preschoolers will be introduced to physical activity, literacy, mathematics and science through play-based learning experiences. Your child will have fun in the preschool room participating in story time, art, drama and music activities, and will enjoy lots of active time in YMCA spaces working on gross motor, spatial awareness and movement fundamentals. This fun, multi-day program supports children to build positive relationships and gain confidence with early learning concepts. *Note: Some classes include a weekly YMCA swim lesson with a qualified instructor. Children must be able to use the washroom independently. Please bring a healthy nut-free snack, as well as a swim suit and towel if your child’s program includes a swim lesson.

Option A: YMCA Preschool Each class will include time in the preschool and activities in our dryland areas. There is no pool time in this option.

Option B: YMCA Preschool – Recreational Swim* One class per week will include a recreational swim.

Preschoolers will be carefully supervised by preschool educators and a YMCA lifeguard.

Option C: YMCA Preschool – Swim Lesson* One class per week will include a YMCA swim lesson with a qualified instructor. Swim lessons in this class are part of our national YMCA swim program, giving your child time each week to master or progress to the next swim level. * Swim dates and times will be announced during the first week of the program. Please bring a swim suit and towel on your child’s swim day.

GLIDERS & DIVERS UNPARENTED - AGE:3Y - 5Y See your child thrive in the water. Your child will progress from the basic skills learned in Bobbers and Floaters. Participants will be introduced to front and back swims, as well as a variety of deep-water skills. Gliders will learn deep-water skills and perform a five-metre back swim. Divers will learn to do a 10-second surface support swim, a 10-metre front and back swim.

SURFER & DIPPER UNPARENTED- AGE:3Y - 5Y Advance your preschooler’s swimming skills. Your child will build confidence in the water as while learning more advanced skills. Surfers will perform kneeling dives, 15-metre front and back swims, and learn about ice safety. Introduce your little one to the fun of the swimming pool! In this fun and engaging class, you will learn how to be safe and have fun in the pool with your child. This program will teach your child to be more comfortable and confident in the water, and prepare him or her for independent swim lessons.

BOBBERS & FLOATERS UNPARENTED - AGE:3Y - 5Y Splash up some fun for your child in this learn-to-swim program. Your child will learn how to be safe and have fun in the water while learning foundational swimming skills.

STAR LEVELS 3 & 4 AGE: 6Y - 14Y Thrive in the water! Star 3 swimmers will learn the elementary backstroke and dolphin kicks, and will do a 200-metre endurance swim. In Star 4, participants learn the breaststroke and sidestroke, and will perform a 350-metre endurance swim. Optional activities provide opportunities to explore competitive swimming, synchronized swimming, water polo and aquafit.

STAR LEVELS 5 & 6 AGE: 6Y - 14Y Advance your swimming skills! In this program, you will use skills learned in previous lessons and apply them in new ways. You will swim the butterfly, throw a buoyant aid to a swimmer, create and teach a water game, and perform a 500-metre endurance swim. Star 6 also includes first aid, towing someone to safety, and demonstrating how to teach a skill.

CHILDREN & YOUTH OTTERS & SEALS AGE: 6Y - 14Y Introduce your child to the important life skill of swimming. Children will improve their body awareness and motor skills as they submerge, kick, roll and jump in the water.

Otters will learn to swim underwater and glide on top. Seals will learn to use flutter kicking and rolling their bodies from side to side for streamlined movement through the water.

DOLPHINS & SWIMMERS AGE: 6Y - 14Y

STAR LEVEL 7 - LEADERSHIP AGE: 6Y - 14Y You’ll be the ultimate swimming star after this challenging level! Enhance your skills in this final level of YMCA’s Star Leadership program. In this program, you will gain a deeper understanding of the roles of lifeguards and swim instructors by assisting them with their responsibilities. You will also learn first aid, how to teach others skills using effective feedback, and will perform a 12-minute 400-metre endurance swim.

YOUTH SWIM CLUB AGE: 6Y - 14Y Have fun learning competitive swimming skills in a more relaxed recreational environment. You will refine and practice competitive strokes including front crawl, breaststroke, back crawl and butterfly. Participants will learn to enter the water for a race, flip turn and work to maximize swimming speed, efficiency and endurance.

Participants will be grouped according to skill level.

Have your child dive into improving swimming skills. This program is designed to increase your child’s swimming distance up to 15 metres using common crawl strokes.

MASTERS SWIM CLUB AGE:15Y AND UP

LEVEL 1 - LEARN TO SWIM AGE: 15Y AND UP Learn the basic swimming skills to become comfortable in the water. You will learn to safely enter and exit the pool, how to jog and move through the water, and to float with and without assistance. Other skills such as breathing techniques, flutter kick and front and back swimming may be introduced depending on individual abilities.

LEVEL 2 - SWIMMING STROKES AND SKILLS AGE: 15Y AND UP Improve your swimming strokes and build on your skills. In this class, you will learn front and back crawl, treading water and the whip kick. You’ll also receive an orientation on deep water, and will practice swimming greater distances. Participants should be able to continuously swim 25-50 meters of front crawl and back crawl.

Master the water! This program covers the four competitive strokes-freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly-in a competitive, club environment. With the help of a coach, you will participate in a variety of swim workouts that will help refine your stroke and build speed, endurance and efficiency in the water. Swimmers will be registered with Swim Alberta as a Masters swimmer and will have the option to compete at sanctioned competitions throughout the season. Participants should able to swim 500 metres continuously prior to registering for this class.

AQUA BOOTCAMP AGE:15Y AND UP Train like a Navy Seal! This is an intense shallow water fitness class that works all the major muscles using different equipment, body positions and drills to add resistance and challenge cardio, core and overall strength.

TETHERED DEEP WATER FITNESS AGE:15Y AND UP

LEVEL 3 -STROKE IMPROVEMENT AGE: 15Y AND UP Build endurance while developing and improving swimming strokes. In addition to front crawl, back crawl and breast stroke, you’ll get an introduction to the sidestroke, butterfly and eggbeater. Different lifesaving skills may also be included. You must be able to swim 50 metres and be comfortable in deep water.

Increase the intensity of your deep water workout in this tethered deep water class.

Using all of the vertical and tilted body positions of a regular deep water fitness class, you will work against the elastic resistance of a tether that is attached to your belt and the lane rope for a fun cardio, strength, and core challenge that you won’t forget! Easy on the joints, deep water tethered workout is a perfect injury recovery or cross-training activity to help you maintain or improve your level of fitness.

SWIM FIT AGE:15Y AND UP Boost your fitness level and your swimming skills! You will refine your strokes and increase your endurance and efficiency through a variety of swim drills and practice.

This fun and social class is a great way to add interest and challenge to lane swimming and become a stronger swimmer. Participants should feel comfortable in the water and be able to swim a minimum of 50 metres continuously.

Your child will gain strength, flexibility, rhythm and agility in a martial art discipline that promotes camaraderie, community and respect.

YOUTH HAP KI DO AGE: 6Y - 12Y Hap = Harmony. Ki = Power. Do = Path. This Korean martial form teaches powerful self-defense techniques through redirection of an opponent’s energy . Participants will learn and practice Hap Ki Do joint lock, pressure point, throw, strike, roll, and kicking techniques. Your child will improve strength, confidence and coordination in this safe, engaging program.

INTRO TO RESISTANCE TRAINING AGE: 15Y AND UP Realize the benefits of resistance training! This beginner class will help you understand the fundamentals of resistance training for building strength. The instructor will lead you through resistance exercises with a focus on proper technique and execution.

PILATES MAT CLASS - LEVEL 1 AGE: 15Y AND UP Stretch and strengthen your body with Pilates! In this challenging, self-paced workout, participants will work through a series of strengthening exercises with a strong emphases on core strength. Walking is one of the best and easiest ways to be active. Walking Club participants enjoy low-impact exercise while exploring the many great outdoor pathways around Calgary. Walking with a group is a great way to increase physical activity and maintain an active lifestyle, while making new social connections with other participants.

Get an all-in-one exercise experience! Fusion is an engaging blend of yoga, Pilates and fitness training. Participants will get a total body work out while working through a progressive series of yoga postures and exercises. You will end each class with a beneficial relaxation session and will build strength, balance and flexibility throughout the program.

ADVANCED YOGA / LEVEL 2 AGE: 15Y AND UP Lift your body and spirit to a higher level. This program will help you grow your yoga practice through more advanced postures. This level is appropriate for people who feel comfortable attending drop-in yoga classes and wish to move forward in their practice.

FAMILY YOGA AGE: 7Y AND UP Bond as you bend in this family yoga program. Enjoy stretching, strengthening and spending quality time together in a calming atmosphere. TAI CHI AGE: 15Y AND UP Find inner balance with Tai Chi. This ancient Chinese martial art form combines slow, focused body movements, meditation and deep breathing. Participants will learn various Tai Chi moves while learning ways to develop spiritual and mental strength. You will improve balance, coordination, and flexibility and develop an inner peace.

ALBERTA CANCER AND EXERCISE PROGRAM (ACE) AGE: 18Y AND UP Are you currently undergoing or have completed cancer treatment? The ACE initiative aims to improve the quality of life for individuals living with cancer in Canada. You will participate in a variety of group exercise classes to help promote physical activity, improve your level of fitness and reduce stress. The ACE program is a study funded by Alberta Innovates: to be eligible participants must be over 18 years old, within 3 years of treatment completion, and able to consent in English. The ACE Maintenance program is open to graduates of the ACE study and individuals who do not meet all of the ACE study criteria.

HEALTHY LIVING MAINTENANCE AGE: 18Y AND UP Do you have a chronic condition and/or have survived a cardiac event? Designed for graduates of the Living Well and/or Cardiac Wellness programs, participants will engage in both cardio and resistance training exercises while supervised by a trained instructor.

This social program will help you build and maintain your strength and cardio fitness.

Participants must have clearance from their doctor(s) to participate.

Are you interested in improving how you eat, cook, and move to better your health? Not sure how to get started? This beginner level program runs twice a week for six weeks.

Each week has one session on healthy eating in the kitchen, and one session on physical activity in the gym. Learn basic components of a balanced workout and balanced meals, how to move safely for your level of fitness, basic cooking and food safety skills, how to prepare easy and healthy meals, how to use different types of kitchen and fitness equipment, how to choose and shop for recipes, what gets in the way and how to plan for success. This program is for individuals 18+ with medical clearance for basic physical activity.

ACTIVE OLDER ADULT

YOGA THRIVE AGE: 15Y AND UP Feed your mind, body and spirit with yoga. Yoga Thrive is a research-based, therapeutic yoga program for all cancer survivors (on or off treatment) and their support people.

This gentle, 12-week Hatha yoga program has been modified for cancer survivors, especially those who are experiencing stiffness, pain, stress or fatigue. Participants may experience significant benefits in overall mood, stress levels, physical strength and quality of life. Class sizes are kept small (maximum of 15) to ensure individual attention and safety. No previous yoga experience is necessary.

CARDIO & COFFEE AGE: 55Y AND UP Make lasting connections with your community through fitness and fun. Choose from either a cardio or yoga option, then relax with coffee and socialize with other participants!

Option 1: Cycle and Stretch Easy does it with this gentle program. Start your cycling journey with a safe, low-impact cardio workout on the bike, followed by a gentle stretch at following your ride. You will improve your endurance, mobility, flexibility and stamina.

Option 2: Active Older Adult Yoga Defy the aging process and loosen up with Yoga for Active Older Adults. Yoga will ease joint issues, reduce chronic pain, improve flexibility and posture, enhance balance, strengthen muscles, reduce insomnia, better circulation and help regulate blood pressure.

CREATIVE HEIGHTS INDEPENDENT - AGE:4Y - 5Y If your children are climbing your walls, why not let them climb ours? This class is designed for your active preschooler. This beginning climbing course will focus on safety and skill on the bouldering wall. Your child will also participate in songs, stories and group games. Children must be able to use the washroom independently, and nonslip indoor shoes are required. A waiver must be signed prior to climbing.

ROCK STARS AGE:14Y - 15Y Hone your climbing expertise in this fun program. You will refine your skills in knot work, route setting and strategic thinking, while challenging yourself to even greater heights on the wall. Participants will learn to use more advanced climbing equipment such as belay devices.

ADULT FIRST ASCENTS AGE:15Y AND UP Learn to rock the climbing wall! This 1.5-hour program will help novice climbers learn the basics of top-rope climbing, including safety procedures, belay technique, knot work and the proper use of equipment. After successfully passing a belay test, you’ll be all set to belay independently in open climbs. Previous climbing experience is not required.

PRESCHOOL ARTISTIC EXPRESSION I CHILD & ADULT - AGE: 2Y - 3Y Children and adults expand their imaginations in this fun-filled class of open-ended creative experiences. Children will use their senses, develop fine motor skills as well as learn to express ideas and emotions through visual art, storytelling movement and song. Participants require non-slip shoes.

SONG AND DANCE CHILD & ADULT - AGE: 2Y - 3Y Rock to the rhythm! Join in on the fun as you and your little one bop to the beat with music-based games, songs and activities designed to support both physical and social development. Children require running shoes to participate safely in this class.

ACTION & CREATIVE EXPLORATION II INDEPENDENT - AGE: 3Y - 5Y Make connections between art and movement. In this program, your child will engage in active play and creative art exploration. A variety of equipment and mediums will ensure they are challenged both physically and artistically. Children require non-slip shoes for safe play, and must be able to use the washroom independently.

MUSIC & MOVEMENT INDEPENDENT - AGE: 3Y - 5Y Develop skills to the rhythm of the beat. Your child will participate in movement activities to help them explore their motor and spatial relations skills. They will learn to develop rhythm in a fun, upbeat environment using a variety of musical genres.

Children require running shoes to participate safely in this class, and must be able to use the washroom independently.

MUSIC, LITERACY AND MORE INDEPENDENT - AGE: 4Y - 5Y Master music and more! Your child will learn about music, notes, and rhythm using Orff, Kodaly and Suzuki techniques. Participants will tell stories through singing and actions using nursery rhymes and classic folk songs, play instruments and learn to read notes. Your child will also enjoy structured small group reading time - yes reading! - exposing children to music in tandem with reading out loud greatly impacts their understanding of rhyme, rhythm and meter. An excellent well-rounded musical experience! Particpants must be able to use the washroom independently.

ARTISTIC EXPRESSION II INDEPENDENT - AGE: 4Y - 5Y Help release your little one’s inner artist. Your child will delve into both guided and self-directed imaginative experiences using different mediums and approaches to foster creative expression. Explore the high energy joy of Bhangra dance! Bhangra is a fusion of music and dance which originates from the Punjab region of India and Pakistan. You will be introduced to a variety of 2D and 3D materials to develop your artistic vocabulary and will explore different processes of making art. This program is open to all skill levels, and is focused on nurturing self-expression and exploring your own creative process. In this instructor led program, you will be encouraged to build a reciprocal relationship with your artwork, embrace spontaneity in your art, and practice developing an intentional and mindful presence during your art making process.

BABYSITTING CERTIFICATION COURSE AGE:11Y - 17Y

JUNIOR LIFEGUARDING CLUB AGE:10Y - 14Y

Learn to take charge and develop a great new skill. You will learn safe practices for working with children, as you develop leadership skills. This Red Cross Babysitting course covers everything from managing difficult behaviors in children to basic first aid, as well as how to conduct yourself professionally as a babysitter. A manual is included in the course fee.

Discover what it takes to be a lifeguard. This program introduces you to lifesaving techniques and first aid skills. You’ll also gain experience in accident prevention and dealing with the public. Participants must be able to swim 50 metres and tread water for one minute.

YMCA COACH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM AGE: 14Y AND UP

FREE

Learn to lead! In this free program, participants will learn how to create, structure and lead a YMCA sport program. At the end of the program, you will understand best practice coaching methods and be ready to be a volunteer coach for a YMCA basketball or other sport program. A great start to becoming a leader in the community. This program requires travel between 3 locations for the first 6 weeks. Suitable for those with or without previous coaching experience.

BRONZE STAR AGE:10Y AND UP Gain the confidence and skills you need to perform low-risk rescues. Increase your understanding of lifesaving skills and personal water safety while developing individual and group decision-making abilities. This course will also prepare you for the Bronze Medallion course. Before taking Bronze Star, we recommend you complete the Canadian Star Patrol program.

BRONZE MEDALLION AGE:13Y AND UP LEADERSHIP IN TRAINING (LIT) AGE:11Y - 15Y Take your leadership skills to the next level. Prepare yourself to be a leader among your friends as you learn how to become a role model in your community. The LIT Program focuses on character and leadership development, communication, fundraising, outdoor and environmental training, and physical literacy. Don’t just be a part of the crowd; be a leader.

Boost your understanding of lifesaving principles and skills. Learn tows, carries, release methods, victim assessment and emergency care through this 20-hour course. To participate, you must be at least 10 years old and have successfully completed the Bronze Star Award, or be 13 years or older and able to swim. This course requires 100 per cent participation for successful completion. A manual is included in the program fee.

BRONZE CROSS AGE:13Y AND UP Looking to advance your lifesaving training? This 20-hour course teaches you the difference between lifesaving and lifeguarding, giving you the direction on how to safely supervise swimmers in and around the water. This course covers emergency procedures, injury assessment and spinal injury rescue. Prerequisite: completion of the Bronze Medallion Award. This course requires 100 per cent attendance and participation to complete.

NATIONAL LIFEGUARD AGE:16Y AND UP Advance your YMCA aquatic leadership to the ultimate level. This 40-hour program builds on the skills, knowledge and values taught in the lifesaving awards. To participate in this program you must have completed the Bronze Cross Award and standard first aid with CPR level C. This course requires 100 per cent attendance and participation to complete successfully. The manual is included in the course fee.

NATIONAL LIFEGUARD RECERTIFICATION AGE:16Y AND UP Continue your certification to be able to work in any pool across Canada. This 4-hour recertification covers all the skills, knowledge and values taught in the National Lifeguard Service pool option course. To enroll in this course, you must hold a National Lifeguard Service card current within the past five years. This course requires 100 per cent participation for successful completion.

YMCA GROUP STRENGTH AGE:16Y AND UP Help others get strong! The YMCA Group Strength fitness instructor course consists of 24 hours in the classroom, with additional apprentice hours and self-study assignments to complete. The strength instructor certification course is designed to give participants the knowledge and experience needed to effectively instruct group strength classes.

Course costs include apprenticeship and observation time necessary for certification.

Prerequisites include attending a recommended 50 hours or more of strength classes, and having CPR level C at time of certification. You must be 16 years or older at the time of certification.

Lead the pack in this cycling instruction course! Our YMCA leadership courses take you through all of the theoretical and practical information needed to become a YMCA certified cycle instructor. In this course, you will learn anatomy, physiology, principles of cycling, class components, class safety and exercise design. Through a combination of in-class practice on the bikes, an apprenticeship, and online learning modules, you will be equipped to teach cycling classes. You will also be partnered with an experienced cycle instructor for one to two hours per week to gain your apprenticeship hours. Cost includes all classroom practical instruction and access to the online learning modules, support and mentorship with a certified instructor to complete apprenticeship work (one to two hours per week for a minimum of eight weeks), and the final evaluation required for certification. ABOUT CAMP CHIEF HECTOR YMCA Camp Chief Hector YMCA is located in beautiful Kananaskis Country, just a short drive west of Calgary. We offer outdoor overnight camps, day camps, programs and certification courses that emphasize community, values-based outdoor education, environmental stewardship, leadership development, individual growth, challenge and fun! We also offer event space for meetings, retreats, weddings and more!

Wilderness Survival 101 Survive in the great outdoors! In this hands-on course you will learn essential skills for outdoor survival from shelter building, fire making, food storage and water safety, to signaling for help and how to look after your psychological well-being in an emergency.

You will put your skills to the test by sleeping in your hand-crafted survival camp!

Canoeing 101 Get your feet wet with flatwater canoeing! You and your canoe partner will learn flatwater fundamentals including paddle strokes, directional turning, stopping, launching and landing techniques. You’ll learn Transport Canada’s safety equipment requirements, self-rescue skills and what essentials to pack in your canoe.

Mountain Biking 101 Know how to ride, but want to expand your abilities on our amazing trail systems? You will expand abilities on unique terrain, learn basic bike maintenance and put your skills to the test during a long, scenic ride in the beautiful Bow Valley. Bikes and helmets will be provided by our partners at Rebound Cycle in Canmore.

Horsemanship 101 Get more comfortable with these magnificent animals! You will learn how to saddle and unsaddle like a wrangler, properly mount and dismount, riding basics and proper trail etiquette with an assigned horse. You will also learn about horse composition and behaviors. By the end of your ride, you will be more comfortable with horses and want to ride more!

KIDS CLUB Want do bring your younger family members with you? Your kids will also enjoy a learning adventure with our experienced outdoor leaders. Instruction includes safe practices around horses, grooming (brushing, picking hooves), saddling, and basic western riding skills (in the arena and on trail). Time will be split between horsemanship and riding. This introductory series is designed to broaden horse skills and knowledge while increasing comfort and confidence working with and riding horses.

BIG DUDES & LITTLE DUDES | AGE: 5Y - 7Y September 8, 15, 22, 29, and October 6 This program is a safe, fun and interactive introduction to horses and riding. Your child will build comfort and confidence with horses both on and off the horse with the help of an inspiring cowboy or cowgirl. Participants will learn basic riding skills and how to successfully lead their horse while riding and while on the ground. No previous horse experience necessary. This 10-day, 80-hour course is the industry standard for outdoor professionals and advanced first aid for remote workers. It is geared to guides and leaders, those who are going on extended and remote expeditions, or those wishing to work as professional ski patrollers. The course is recommended for outdoor professionals, outdoor recreationalists and employess who are in the backcountry for days or weeks at a time. Topics include: patient assessment system, body systems, environmental injuries/conditions, anaphylaxis, lifting/moving/extrication, patient carries, backcountry medicine, and CPR. Topics are covered in-depth and includes simulations. This course is hosted by Camp Chief Hector YMCA, and taught by Rocky Mountain Adventure Medicine. This course is recognized by Alberta Occupational Health & Safety as an Advanced First Aid certificate.
