MEET YOUR PRESENTERS Tonya Gutch (Precor)

Keynote Speaker and Presenter

Tonya Gutch, MS, CSCS-International Educator and Fitness professional. Tonya’s fitness experience spans everywhere from owning and operating a personal training business to training professional athletes and coaching national and world fitness champions. She is a Professional Fitness Trainer and Lecturer for the Cooper Fitness Center in Dallas, Texas. She has also been involved with the Precor Coaching Center since its inception in 2015. Tonya’s competitive edge has earned her gold medals in the AAU National and World Aerobics Championships and continued to go on and claim 3 more gold medals at the National Aerobics Championships on the professional level on ESPN.

Susane Pata (Life Fitness) Susane Pata is a global master instructor, presenter and author for PTA Global, TRX®, Life Fitness and TriggerPoint™ brands. She delivers live fitness education to wide audiences in North, Central and South America, Europe and Asia, and has begun writing for a variety of websites and publications. Susane created TRX’s first-ever group fitness program in 2004, and she launched their education department and first-ever group training studio in San Francisco. When not traveling, Susane resides in New York City, instructing and advocating strongly for creative, yet smart, group fitness training.

Patty Grant Patty Grant is an AFLCA Assistant Trainer in Aquatic, Group, Resistance and Older Adult training and holds a Yoga RYS 200hr teaching certificate. She is also the creator of the Aquatic program Aquazen. Patty has been a Recreation Program Specialist for the City of Calgary for over 20 years and has mentored countless AFLCA leaders in training. Known for her passion, creativity and supportive nature, her mission as a facilitator is to help her students maximize their potential in their own unique and extraordinary way.

Paul Larmer Paul Larmer, P.E., RMT, CSEP-PT, is an instructor in the true sense of the world. His down to earth approach guides you inside the structure of the body to understand energy flow and evolution. Specializing in yoga and meditation, Paul’s sessions provide clarity into the structure and function of the body and mind for a complete and integrated health perspective. You’ll find yourself making connections and having many “aha!” moments in Paul’s insightful sessions.

Jessica Ollinger Jessica Ollinger is a YMCA Canada Trainer, PFT, CPT, EIMC Level One, Group Strength Certified, Group Cycle Certified, Aquatic Fitness Certified and Group Core ÂŽ Certified. She has been employed with the YMCA for over eight years. During her time at the YMCA she has been in a variety of roles but most currently is the Health and Fitness Supervisor at the Shawnessy YMCA. The YMCA is a second home for Jessica. She credits the amazing volunteers and inspirational co-workers for making her YMCA experience memorable. When she is not at her second home, you can find Jessica snowboarding, or hiking out in the mountains with her family, friends and puppy, as well as playing pretty much every sport she can find!

Judy Cudrak Judy Cudrak, BSc., BMgt., has been a Keiser National Trainer for 12 years, and 35 years as a Certified Exercise Professional. She mentors new trainers as a YMCA Training Educator and AFLCA Master Trainer, and she educates and certifies leaders as an AFLCA Trainer. From Calgary, Judy is a Stott Pilates and Fusion instructor, and holds yoga certifications in Ashtanga (Level 1) and Iyengar (RYT200). Travelling internationally to support the Keiser M3 education, Judy brings a love of fitness and learning to every class she teaches.

Daniel La-Lac Daniel graduated with a Bachelor of Health and Physical Education in Physical Literacy in 2017. Throughout university, Daniel was a teaching assistant for Motor Learning, as well as the Physical Growth and Motor Development labs. As a research assistant, he also performed data collection for the Canadian Assessment of Physical Literacy (CAPL) and the Test of Gross Motor Development (3rd Ed.). Daniel was inspired to pursue Kinesiology and Physical Education because of the ability to empower others through exercise, movement, and strength and conditioning. Integrating education, knowledge, and experiences into application is what Daniel strives for every day. Dedicated to developing strong leaders, Daniel is in the process of becoming a YMCA Trainer of Fitness Leaders in the specializations of Personal Training and Group Strength. Daniel is the Health and Fitness Supervisor at Brookfield Residential YMCA at Seton.

Monika Chilimoniuk Monika began her YMCA journey at Shawnessy YMCA where she shared her passion for fitness with everyone around her. From her health and fitness studies that she received in Poland, Monika was able to transition to personal training and teaching group fitness classes in Calgary. Monika has a deep appreciation for the importance of exercise and staying active for life. She is a certified Alberta Health Services Fitness Leader who helped with facilitating the Living Well Program at Shawnessy YMCA. Over the course of 3 years with the YMCA, Monika has become a YMCA Trainer of Fitness Leaders with several specializations such as; Aquatic Fitness, Group Strength, and Choreography. Monika is currently the Health and Fitness Coordinator at Brookfield Residential YMCA at Seton.

Sandra Martins Sandra is the Health and Fitness Coordinator at Shawnessy YMCA, YMCA Canada Trainer, YMCA Personal Trainer, and YMCA Group Strength Instructor. Sandra lived in South Korea for 10 years and during her time there she earned a 1st Degree Black Belt in Korean Kickboxing, Kyuktooki. Sandra enjoys sharing her passion for health and fitness with everyone. She teaches a variety of classes and loves making fitness accessible for all. When she’s not at the YMCA, she can be found in the kitchen playing with her Instant Pot.

Sean Keith Sean has a BSc in Exercise and Health Physiology, and an accreditation through the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology. Sean holds his YMCA Trainer Educator accreditation specializing in Personal Training and Group Strength. In school, Sean performed his final focus with Alberta Health Services working with patients in an integrated community-based chronic disease management program. Sean has also spent several years working in various professional sporting environments, with a primary designation in soccer. This range of experience allows Sean to speak to the entire spectrum of health, exercise, and fitness, and means that Sean is sure to have something to offer to anyone who asks!

Scott Andrews Scott is a graduate of the Institute of Holistic Nutrition, Athabasca University and Georgian College, and has worked in the fitness industry for over 15 years, both as a nutritionist and a personal trainer. In addition to his education, Scott has received certifications in CrossFit, CPT, OPEX Coaching Program, YMCA trainers of trainers, Advanced Sports Nutrition and various courses through C.HE.K. Institute. Scott leads workshops to train fitness professionals in some of the top clubs in Canada. He is locally recognized as an expert in the field of performance conditioning and weight management. His use of a nutrient dense diet has helped many of his clients reach their full potential. In addition to conducting workshops on weight management, holistic living and running his own private nutrition and fitness practice, Scott has taught Fitness and Sports Nutrition at The Institute of Holistic Nutrition in Vancouver. Scott is currently the Centre Manager South, Health and Fitness at YMCA Calgary.

Michelle Green Michelle Green is the Gray Family Eau Claire Health and Fitness Coordinator. She is a YMCA Trainer and has certifications in Group Strength, Group Cardio, and most recently, a certification in Aquatic Fitness. Michelle teaches various classes such as Hi Lo, Step, and a variety of strength classes including Muscle Works, Cross Training, HIIT, and Tabata Drumming. For over 8 years, Michelle brings energy, passion and knowledge into her classes. She is a strong team player and a fitness advocate for the YMCA and the City of Calgary. Outside the YMCA, Michelle is a busy mom of two teenage boys who keep her on her toes during Football Season. Michelle also volunteers on her son’s team as an endurance and agility coach.

Lorelei Waters After a 13-year career working with high risk teens and families, Lorelei chose to follow her continuing passion for her active lifestyle and entered the fitness industry. In 2010 she became certified as a personal trainer and group fitness leader. To advance her training further, in 2014 she traveled to Thailand where she completed her 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training.

Kristin Reid After being in the optical field for close to 15 years, Kristin decided a change was needed. In 2012 she joined the YMCA community, first as a member and then as a volunteer fitness instructor. Kristin obtained her first YMCA certification in Group Strength the same year, and certifications in Group Choreography, Aquatic Fitness and Group Cycle quickly followed. She most recently obtained her YMCA Personal Training certification. Kristin is currently the Health and Fitness Supervisor at Saddletowne YMCA. She is also a YMCA Trainer and loves to help shape the minds of up-and-coming fitness instructors. She is passionate about fitness and music and using the two together to help others achieve their fitness goals. Her mantra is, “You don’t have to start out perfect, you just have to start!”

Darryl Brown Darryl is an avid cyclist both on the road, as well as indoors. He was drawn to cycling after being challenged to participate in the Ride to Conquer Cancer (RTCC). Darryl has just completed his sixth year in the RTCC. When he is not Personal Training at Brookfield Residential YMCA at Seton, he is leading group cycle, Yoga, HIIT, Gentle Fitness, or Yin Yoga classes.

Tyson Moore Tyson Moore is the Health and Fitness Supervisor at Gray Family Eau Claire YMCA, a Certified Personal Trainer with the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology, an AFLCA Resistance Training Specialty Leader, YMCA Group Strength Fitness Instructor, and an Agatsu Certified Kettlebell Instructor. Tyson has been training clientele in a range of exercise methodologies for the past 5 years since obtaining his Fitness and Health Promotion Diploma from Red Deer College, which has allowed him to fully express his creativity and become a ‘Jack of All Trades’ fitness facilitator. Tyson aims to provide unbiased and interesting information to everyone at all fitness levels; whether you’re a beginner yogi or an experienced Olympic weightlifter. A conversation with Tyson is guaranteed to leave you saying, “Hmm... I never thought of that before!”

Lisa Rushton Lisa is the Head Personal Trainer at Remington YMCA in Quarry Park. She came to Calgary from Vancouver with 10 years of experience in personal training, cycling, fitness classes and working with older adults and special populations. Lisa is very passionate about personal training. She prides herself on her professionalism, strong work ethic, education and mentoring new personal trainers. In her spare time, you will find her in her kitchen cooking for family, friends and her community

Ashley Cyr Ashley has been an OCR Competitive Athlete for eight years. Qualifying herself and her clients to compete in the OCR World Championships, she comes with extensive knowledge and experience to change a nervous first time ‘mudder’ to a confident one! Ashley is the Health and Fitness Supervisor at Melcor YMCA at Crowfoot. Some of Ashley’s credentials include: Spartan SGX Certified Obstacle Specialist, Certified Personal Trainer, OCR Coach and Certified Group Fitness Instructor. Ashley has been a part of the fitness industry and the YMCA for 10 years. She has presented at many recreation workshops and teaches HIIT, Bootcamps, Group Cycle, Kettlebell and Core.

Julien Lepage, Owner of Circles of Rhythm, Musician, Social Worker Julien is a professional musician and has found a way to combine his passion of using the healing power of music within his profession as a Social Worker in Mental Health. Through his innovation and research, Julien empowers staff and leaders around him to build community in the least expected areas including: inpatient psychiatric hospital units, corporate business settings, as well as within the drug and alcohol addiction detox centers. Julien offers an energetic, yet grounding experience using an ancient tool, the drum! Julien always brings with him his inspiring energy and passion for life to all who surround him.

Pre-Conference Workshop: Queenax Foundations | Tonya Gutch (Precor) 9:30am-4:30pm | Studio A Part A: Queenax Functional Training Movement Design The Queenax Functional Training Movement Design course is a four-hour practical workshop that teaches participants a system for building movements and workouts with an array of functional training tools. Attendees will learn how to create logical, engaging and safe movement progressions by integrating suspension fitness training tools, bodyweight exercises, tubing, agility and other resistance modalities. Participants will also learn how to program safely and effectively to maximize participation in a limited space.

Part B: Queenax Small Group Program Design The Queenax Small Group Program Design course provides a pathway for developing small group coaches and small group training leadership skills by leveraging the open architecture of Queenax. This workshop teaches group coaching dynamics and small group fundamentals to help new and experienced small group coaches hone their confidence and familiarity with delivering high value coaching to multiple clients in a single session. Participants will practice three small group coaching formats and programs, and takeaway five pre-built fourweek training packages to help kick start programming in their facility. Open workout design templates are also provided for ongoing innovation.

Aqua Zen is a gentle shallow water experience that encourages peace and vitality through a variety of movements and practices. Learn how to incorporate a holistic, wellness-based approach that focuses on mindfulness and range of motion while improving balance and body awareness. Easy on the joints with less impact than a regular shallow water class, this program offers an alternative to the traditional shallow water fitness class.

Queenax SUPERHERO Obstacle Course Race Training | Tonya Gutch 9:00am-10:30am | Studio A Queenax SUPERHERO Obstacle Course Race Training introduces skills and strategies for launching and maintaining a lasting obstacle course race program in your functional area. This session focuses on the four fundamental obstacle course race components: CLIMB, CROSS, CRAWL, and CARRY. Concepts in this session are designed for more advanced exercisers looking to take their training to new heights! Workouts are designed to surprise, challenge and track progress, all while bringing out your inner ninja! The session concludes with the YMCA QUEENAX SUPERHERO obstacle course challenge!

ICG Coach By Color | Susane Pata 9:00am-10:30am | Studio B Come experience the most colorful and powerful indoor cycling class ever! In your Coach by Color (CBC) ride you’ll be on the IC7, rated as the most accurate power bike on the market. Your WattRate bike console will be customized to you and your ability and will change in color based off of your riding intensities. Ride the flat roads in green, climb mountains in yellow and hit your best intervals in red! Learn how CBC makes your job easier as an indoor cycling instructor when it comes to coaching effort and intensity to your participants.

Learn new concepts to work with when instructing a core-dominant class as you get curious about utilizing the water in a way that enhances our participant’s experience.

Next-Step Program Design: Program Training for the Long-Term Client | Sean Keith 1:30pm-3:00pm | Art B This session is recommended for personal trainers or individuals with a basic understanding of exercise programing. In this session we will break down some complex training styles by analyzing exercise selection, sets, reps, and tempo of each style. We will look at the effect it has on the body – from neural response, metabolic activity, and intramuscular adaptations. Lastly, we will review where these training blocks should be built into programing. This session will provide you with a better understanding of various new training styles, and how to properly incorporate these into your long-term clients’ programming, or even your own!

In this session, learn play-inspired fitness games designed with fun in mind, while optimizing functional movements that ignite the inner child in your participants! Have them jumping out of their cars and running through the parking lot just to get to your class!

Session participants will come away with new ideas for incorporating common items found in the pool setting into their classes for a fun-filled workout that adults will be sure to enjoy!

Power Down | Tonya Gutch 3:30pm-5:00pm | Studio A We power down our phones, we power down our computers, but are our participants remembering to POWER DOWN? POWER DOWN is a restorative session guiding attendees on the focus of mobility, stability, flexibility and re-centering of the neuro-myo-fascial system. In this session the importance of rest and regeneration are explained and experienced. Time to restore!

Power and Watts: Light up your Ride (in Colour)! | Judy Cudrak 3:30pm-5:00pm | Studio B To be on the cutting edge, a cycling instructor needs to understand the correlation between wattage and intensity, and how we use the technology of indoor cycling computers. In this workshop, we will define power, explain testing protocols, and identify the power training zones of intensity. We will also correlate the zones to the colours on the indoor cycling computer- white, blue, green, yellow and red, and how you can use this information to create and coach safe and effective drills. Learn how power testing can individualize your participants’ workouts, identify gaps in their training, and help them set goals for success.

Every gasp, sigh or change in the rate of breathing reflects emotional ups and downs. Find out how the breath relates to nervous system function and learn yogic breathing (pranayama) techniques that give you the upper hand on your emotions, restoring a sense of control over your life.

Nutrition for Fat Loss | Scott Andrews 3:30pm-5:00pm | Art B This workshop will teach you simple and effective nutrition and lifestyle strategies, which will help your clients meet optimal wellness. We will cover everything from nutrient density, hormones and how your circadian rhythm plays a vital role when it comes to permanent weight loss. You will learn lifestyle tactics you can implement right away which have lasting effects on your mind and body.

Learn to add intensity to your exercises using the 3-2-1 method. Using a variety of progressive, agonist/antagonist, compounds and ladder exercises to create 6-minute rounds of 3 minutes of Strength, 2 minutes of Cardio and 1 minute of Core with 30 seconds to 1 minute of rest. Set the tone by awakening your mind and fueling your spirit with an energetic intention-setting Rise and Shine class. Move though energizing sun salutations into strength-building standing poses. We continue to warm and loosen our sleepy joints with ‘just-enough’ twists and folds to work out the kinks and tightness so you can flow through your day with ease.

Learn how to make your class both fun and functional by adding the element of games and participant interaction to your class! You will walk away with a pocket full of new ideas for your class!

Bringing on the Bands | Tyson Moore 10:00am-11:30am | Studio A Who said mobility couldn’t be fun? Learn how to use heavy, medium, and light resistance loop bands to improve your shoulder, hip, and knee mobility. This active workshop will cover a variety of different methods such as banded distractions, flossing techniques, and loaded PNF stretches. Various bands will be available, but feel free to BYOB (Bring your Own Band).
