Note From The Editors Nota de los Editorxs This Summer, Coachella Unincorporated continued exploring environmental justice in the ECV by engaging youth in a series of conversations and projects regarding transportation accessibility and safe mobility. Our goal this summer was to use helpful tools like our Walking Audit Tool Survey, with questions regarding the condition of pedestrian facilities, crosswalks, maintenance, sidewalks, aesthetics, and shade, in order to better assess the needs of our community. After multiple conversations with youth at local high schools, the need for accessible transportation became more apparent and urgent. In this zine, you'll find a plethora of resources ranging from cooing centers, free activities in the ECV, and fun puzzles!

Este verano, Coachella Unincorporated continuó explorando la justicia ambiantal en el ECV. En DMHS, las ideas de lxs jóvenes para mejorar el transporte (Figura A) incluyen más autobuses, aire acondicionado, banquetas y conductores de autobuses que lleguen a tiempo. Los jóvenes suelen depender de los automóviles, autobuses escolares o públicos y caminar para llegar a su destino (Figura B). En CVHS, las ideas de lxs jóvenes para mejorar el transporte (Figura C) también incluyen más aire acondicionado, conductores de autobús puntuales y más sombra en las paradas de autobús escolares y públicos. Para los jóvenes, la parada de autobús más cercana está de 2 a 20 minutos de donde viven (Figura D).

Summer Walking Audits
This summer we hosted two walking audits in Mecca and North Shore which allowed youth to explore the safety and walkability of the valley. Many youth considered not having proper cooling areas with shade or access to water dangerous. In terms of aesthetics, having no shaded areas, not having enough benches, and empty plots of dirt were reported as unpleasant. Youth noted many areas of improvements, a lot of which, included more speed signs, bus stops, shaded areas, cleaner environments, and additional water stations. When youth were asked what they considered to be the most pleasant factors in areas we covered, youth reported that they found the shade and fresh air provided by trees, art and consistent sidewalks were very inviting.
In North Shore, many of the results were the same with youth wanting to see an increase in shade, sidewalks, wheelchair accessibility and community spaces. Other observations included water fountains in the park not working or there not being sidewalks at all! Youth also noted that the abandoned buildings near the Yacht Club felt like an unsafe area. Moreover, the smell of the Salton Sea and the lack of nearby clinics, stores, bus stops, street lights and signs were noted as most unpleasant. These findings highlighted the critical need of resources and safe and accessible transportation for the community!

Auditorias de Caminata de Verano
Este verano organizamos dos auditorías de caminata en Mecca y North Shore, que permitieron a jóvenes explorar la seguridad y la accesibilidad peatonal del Valle. Muchxs jóvenes consideraron peligroso no contar con áreas adecuadas de enfriamiento con sombra o acceso al agua. En términos de estética, la falta de sombra, la insuficiencia de bancos y lotes vacíos se reportaron como aspectos desagradables. Lxs jóvenes señalaron muchas áreas para mejorar, las cuales incluyeron más señales de velocidad, paradas de autobús, áreas sombreadas, ambientes más limpios y más estaciones de agua. Cuando se les preguntó a los jóvenes cuáles consideraban que eran los factores más agradables, respondieron que la sombra, el aire fresco proporcionados por los árboles, el arte y las banquetas consistentes.

La auditoría en North Shore fue un poco diferente, ya que recorrimos la ciudad en automóvil antes de caminar por el parque. Los resultados fueron similares, ya que lxs jóvenes deseaban ver un aumento en áreas con sombra, banquetas, accesibilidad para sillas de ruedas y espacios comunitarios. Salton Sea The Salton Sea, is a large body of water located in the community of North Shore. It once used to be a famous location for family gatherings, swimming, and fishing. Although it cannot be used for swimming or fishing anymore, it remains there as a great place for stargazing, relaxing and admiring the beauty of nature.
Mecca Hills If you are looking to go out and explore nature, the Mecca Hills Wilderness is a great option! You can go camping, hiking, picnicking, or wildlife viewing! While you're there take pictures of the animals and rock formations you find along the way! Take a buddy, a hat, sunscreen and water if you decide to visit ! 11 | SUMMER 2023
