From starting school to become a pharmacist to getting a degree in interior design might seem like a stretch, but that is exactly what Kody Bottone did.
“I worked in the pharmaceutical industry and took one semester toward becoming a pharmacist but realized I did not want to do that,” Bottone said. “Instead I attended a local community college and studied interior design. I’ve always had a passion for creating beautiful, inviting spaces.”
Bottone has never regretted his decision. He recently opened Bottone Home in Jamestown, which features small furnishings and home décor.
“I saw that our community was missing a place to find unique and curated home décor,” he said. “That is what inspired me to open a store.”
After purchasing a home in Jamestown a year ago, Bottone noticed empty spaces along Main Street and felt the former trophy shop at 100 E. Main St. would be a good location for his store.
“I wanted a small space,” Bottone said. “I love this area and thought this was a good opportunity to bring something like this to Jamestown. The business is not just a showroom, but has new items for sale. I have things you might not find in other stores or don’t have access to unless you are in the industry. I also can help you source what
you are looking for.”
Bottone Home opened in April, but plans are to host a grand opening soon. There has already been interest shown in the store and what it offers.
Although he has a degree in interior design he has no plans to do that type of work … “yet,” he said. “I am figuring it out.”
His main goal is to build a relationship with customers to gain repeat business.
“Obtaining things for your home can be ongoing,” Bottone acknowledged. “The idea is to make your home reflect you.
“We hope to become part of the community by providing a place where people can find meaningful pieces, thoughtful gifts and new inspiration.”

Local fiber artist featured at Fiber Arts Day
By CaroL Brooks freelAnce writer cab1hp@gmail.com
When we think of wool, we often think of sheep, from which the wool comes. We also think about how that wool can be made into sweaters, toboggans, scarves, etc., all pieces of cold weather clothing. And how itchy it can be, depending on the breed of sheep.
It is not a matter of just shearing the sheep. There are many steps to be accomplished before the final product is made, steps like cleaning the newly sheared wool, carding to get out the tangles, spinning into yarn, dying, and finally, weaving or knitting. Depending the breed of sheep, there could be even more steps.
Crystal Hesser, also known as Spin Up Girl, knows all the ins and outs of fiber preparation and is more than willing to impart her 14 years of wisdom.
“I love Fiber Arts Day because it’s a different group of people,” she said. “I get to talk to people who are not fully immersed in the fiber arts. It’s nice to reach out to people [that] this is not their thing.”
She gets excited when the people she talks with also get excited about her work.
Wednesdays-Saturdays from 12-6 p.m. or by appointment. Contact Bottone at 336962-8069.
“There is such a rabbit hole they never knew was there,” she added, laughingly. Hesser, a former advertising copywriter, began her fiber journey by knitting, but that was not satisfying to her. She found fiber work and spinning to have a Zen quality she likes.
“It’s meditative,” she said of the craft.

Vickrey Chapel Church has new vision

In case you missed it, we celebrate Easter here 52 times a year. Join us any Easter Sunday.
The congregation at Vickrey Chapel Church acknowledges the risen Savior not just once a year, but every Sunday and invites others to join them. It says so right on the sign in the side yard.
The church, which was formerly known as Vickrey Chapel United Methodist Church, has always welcomed visitors. But now it has a new pastor and new vision.
“The congregation did not agree with the direction the United Methodists were going and made the decision to follow biblical principles,” the Rev. Jeff Porter explained. “Now the

“I am excited to serve at Vickrey Chapel Church,” Porter said. “I came to partner with the folks here. I want to minister with them, not to them. We are in a transitional stage where we are following a lot of Methodist traditions but deciding how to move forward.”

Ask The Pastor
Did Noah really fit all the animals of the earth on the Ark?
By pastor dr. sid steWart
Dear Pastor Sid, I was reading the verses in Genesis and the story of the Noah and the Ark. I was wondering: how did he fit all the animals on the Ark? The Ark was not big enough for all the animals was it? — Martha in Walkertown
Hi Martha in Walkertown, The Ark was about 500 feet long and about three stories high. It was build with three decks and thousands of square feet for storage and cages for animals. Go and visit the Ark Encounter in northern Kentucky if you get the chance. So what about the animals? All of the animals were not required to enter the Ark, only some of them. And the Genesis account refers to “kinds” of animals. “Kinds” means species, and there are only about 7,000 different specials of animals. Canines or dogs is a species, and so is felines or the cat families. But only two dogs, a male and female, entered the Ark. And all the dogs that exists now came from those two dogs. Likewise with all the species. It is speculated that the Ark could have held around 50,000 animals. Keep in mind that baby dogs, giraffes, and dinosaurs, would have been on the Ark, so the cages were still pretty small. This also means that each person on board (8 total) would have cared daily for about 6250 animals. Can you imagine?
WHAT DOES INERRANT MEAN?
Dear Pastor Sid,
My pastor used the word “inerrant” the other day when he spoke about the Bible. But what does this mean? I love my pastor but he did not explain the word as much as he could have. So please help me out. — Tom in Mt. Tabor
Hi Tom in Mt. Tabor,
Your pastor sounds like a teacher to me, and I am so glad he referred to the Bible as inerrant. The word inerrant is not a Bible word but the idea of inerrancy is all through the Bible. Inerrant basically means that the Bible is error free in its original manuscripts. In other words, there are no mistakes in the Bible. This means that not one writer wrote anything misleading or wrong, and that no contradictions between writers exists. It is God’s Perfect Book. So-we can trust in every book, chapter, verse, and word. We can stake our very lives on its teaching because it is error free. We live in a world of fake news, so the Bible is the only source of truth that is error free in all aspects. See I Timothy 3: 16
Ask The Pastor is written by Pastor Dr. Sid Stewart, from the Hoover’s Grove Wesleyan Church, 5399 Jackson Creek Rd, Denton. Pastor Sid’s teaching motto is: Making the Complex Simple. If you have a question about the Bible, please email Pastor Sid at moses43@juno.com and it will soon be answered in this column. Also take time to visit Dr. Stewart Productions, a YouTube Channel produced by Dr. Stewart where you will find over 650 videos and slide presentations of a variety of topics.
love you neighbor as yourself and follow the great commission as found in Matt. 28:19-20 to go and make disciples.
“We want to build the function of the church around these principles,” Porter said.
Looking to the future, emphasis will be placed on visitation, live streaming the services and incorporating contemporary music to appeal to young families.
“I like the mix of old and new music,” Porter said.

“[Growing the church] will require work,” he added. “People need to be involved. We want to help members grow in their love for the Lord, but also to be mission minded outside the walls of the church. We must get people out of their comfort zone and allow God to work.
“People are searching and we need to start in our Jerusalem and expand from there,” he noted, referencing Acts 1:8.
In the past year, attendance at Vickrey Chapel Church has almost doubled.
One thing first time visitors to the church are sure to notice is its friendly atmosphere. Porter noted that the first time he preached there it was more than a half hour after the service ended before he could leave. People just wanted to welcome him and chat.
Elizabeth White, who began to visit the church recently, agrees with Porter’s assessment about friendliness.

“When I walked into the church for the first time, I felt like I had known the people all my life,” she said. “It is a beautiful church with a long heritage.”
The church was first organized in the 1870s, with a membership of 25 meeting in the old Black Jack schoolhouse. Fourteen years later, a small church was built and named Shady Grove Methodist Episcopal Church South. As church membership grew, there was a need to expand and many moved to what is today Groometown Church. Several continued to worship at Shady Grove, but 20 years later faced the same problem of needing more room. Albert Vickrey donated two acres of property at 5348 Vickrey Chapel Road, Greensboro, on which to build a church and cemetery.
The church was completed in 1920 and named Vickrey Methodist Protestant Church in honor of Mr. Vickrey. Throughout the

years, the church continued to grow in membership and saw improvements made to the structure as well as the construction of a fellowship hall and parsonage.
In January 2024, Vickrey Chapel Church was restructured as a nondenominational church. A paragraph at the end of a brief written history stating important dates associated with the church sums up the feelings of the congregation: “We want our lives to reflect the same faith in God that our forefathers showed. We want our church to grow physically, but more importantly, we desire it to grow in grace and favor with God.”

Memorial Day Highlight: Easy BBQ Chicken for a Crowd
Memorial Day is a time to honor and remember those who have served our country with deep respect and gratitude. As we reflect on their sacrifices, many families also gather to mark the beginning of summer with a shared meal. This year, consider serving your guests a simple yet flavorful BBQ chicken that combines ease with taste, offering a budget-friendly way to celebrate the season with deliciousness.
Planning ahead is key to making the holiday both affordable and effortless. By creating a flavorful dry rub and sauce from scratch, plus pre-cooking the chicken, you’ll save time and stress. Simply reheat the chicken on the grill, and watch your guests bask in the glow of finger-licking, saucecovered bliss.
baking sheet(s) in the oven and bake for 1 hour, or until the chicken is fully cooked.
To check for doneness, use a meat thermometer -- it should reach 165 F.
After baking, remove the chicken from the oven and let it cool for about 15 minutes. At this point you can refrigerate the chicken for up to 2 days.
Make the BBQ sauce: While the chicken rests, in a medium bowl, combine all the BBQ sauce ingredients. Stir until the brown sugar dissolves. Brush each piece of chicken liberally with BBQ sauce.

For maximum flavor, dry brine your chicken pieces with the dry rub overnight. Then pre-bake the chicken in the oven to ensure it’s fully cooked. You can safely refrigerate the baked chicken for up to two days in an airtight container, keeping it fresh. When it’s time to grill, simply brush each piece with a generous coating of sauce and finish it off on the grill.
For budget-friendly entertaining, chicken leg quarters are the most affordable option. They cost less than thighs and drumsticks due to minimal processing. For even greater savings, buy them frozen
in 10-pound bags, which typically contain 12-15 pieces. Just plan ahead for defrosting (about two days). You can cook them whole or cut them into pieces, depending on your preference.

“I don’t have to look at my hands, I don’t have to pay attention to what I’m doing. It puts you in a very peaceful state. It’s cheaper than therapy.
“There’s nothing to me more satisfying to being able to take the wool off a sheep’s back, washing it, process it myself, dye it if I feel inclined, spin it, make it into something … [and know] I have literally made something from scratch.”
She believes knowledge of this kind of craft is not readily available now and she would like to change that. She said the fiber arts community is so diverse now and believes the old-fashioned community that groups experienced in things such as quilting bees is gone.
“Craft is the thing that brings us a bit of peace that is missing in a lot of people’s lives,” she believes.
Several of her yarn creations employ seashells from Sanibel Island, Fla., and others, silkworm cocoons.
Hesser believes the yarn itself can be a piece of art. It does not have to be made into something. Even draping yarn over a piece of driftwood creates art.
She had noticed one of her skeins of yarn looked like clouds, so she added blue beads on strings to hang down from the skein like drops of rain. This project is framed in her home.
“I enjoy spinning and it’s always nice for me to give my yarns a life beyond me, to have other people make something with it,” she said.
Hesser teaches one-on-one classes and group classes at fiber festivals. She also writes for spinning magazines.
Fiber Arts Day
Come see some of Crystal Hesser’s Spin Up Girl Fibers creations and watch her spin at Fiber Arts Day at Mendenhall Homeplace June 7, from 10-2. She will have skeins of yarn for sale as well as many of her unique creations on display. She is happy to talk to visitors about the process.
Other exhibits at Fiber Arts Day include embroidery, Native American beading, knot tying, silkworms, fiber history and more.
Admission is free and donations are gratefully accepted to support historic preservation and education.
Mendenhall Homeplace is located at 603 W. Main St. in Jamestown, across from the High Point City Lake Park. Handicapped parking is available at the Homeplace, with other parking available at City Lake Park.
