Road widening, curbing project changed town’s look By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com Nearly 30 years ago Jamestown’s Main Street Improvement Project changed the landscape of the town, especially downtown. Crews from Larco Construction of Winston-Salem began work in mid-December 1996 on widening the street from Wade Street to Teague Avenue. Each new traffic lane increased to 12 feet wide. New curbs and gutters were added along with a storm drainage sys-
tem. Curbing was first installed in the late 1940s. According to the March 19, 1997, Jamestown News, the project cost $1.2 million, paid for by the state. The Town of Jamestown paid for the brick sidewalks. Two of the three major intersections in town were changed, with the most drastic change being the alignment of Ragsdale and Dillon roads. Motorists at the time had a zigzag trip to cross Main Street in front of the library. For safety, the Town added a traffic light. The entrance to the library was moved

Dennis Medical treatments don’t take a holiday The American Red Cross urges donors to make an appointment to give blood or platelets now to keep the blood supply as strong as possible in the final days of the year and into 2026. Types O, A negative and B negative blood donors are especially needed now. Record-setting travel is happening across the country. With more people headed away from home, blood and platelet donations can dip at a crucial time when patients count on care. Bad weather or shifting travel schedules could force donors to cancel or reschedule donation appointments and tighten the blood supply. Make time to give before you go — it’s a simple way to make a lifesaving impact. Give hope during the holidays and schedule a blood or platelet donation appointment by using the Red Cross Blood Donor app, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). A stoplight will eliminate that problem.” Additionally, the intersection of Main Street and Guilford Road changed. Ragsdale High School has girls wrestling team
By NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com
Issac Tahirkheli understands wrestling. He is only in his second year as head coach of the wrestling program at Ragsdale High School, but he wrestled for that same program at Ragsdale from 2014-2018. When he saw the possibility of wrestling collapsing at the school, he stepped up to coach the team, which this year includes not only a boys’ team but a girls’ team as well. “There was no girls’ team when I wrestled,” Tahirkheli said. “Two or three would train and tried wrestling with the guys in matches, but it was rare. It was unusual for girls to participate all four years.” Times are changing. The popularity of girls wrestling is growing and girls are beginning to have their own wrestling teams. Each one must include at least seven people to be official. Last year was the first time that schools began to have separate teams for boys and

12 days of Christmas are now By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com

The Scottish song “The 13 Days of Yule” expands the number of days of Christmas and mentions a king sending partridges, geese, ducks, swans, etc. to his lady. This song is from the early 1800s. Yule was originally a heathen feast that lasted for 12-13 days. Eventually it came to represent the midwinter season of December and January, later becoming synonymous with Christmas. Some believe the song represents a catechism English Catholic youth had to memorize, but this theory just came to be within the last 60 years or so. It is possible the poem/song began as a memory game during 12th Night, or the evening before Jan. 6. After players formed a circle, the leader would recite a verse and each person would repeat it. Then the leader would add another verse, speaking faster. This was repeated until a mistake was made by one of
the players, who would have to drop out of the game – or maybe offer a kiss or a sweet. The last player, other than the leader, was the winner. If you are up to it, try singing the last verse with one breath. By the way, the total cost of those 364 gifts over 12 days in 2025 is $218,542.98, according to PNC Bank, which has been tracking the price of the gifts listed in the song since 1984. If you did not repeat a gift, it would still cost a hefty $51,476.12 this year.

What the 12 gifts may stand for One popular thought is that the list of gifts listed in the song was actually a sort of “code” passed along during a time when Christians were punished for worshiping in the open. Although this theory is up to debate regarding historical accuracy, it is see day, page 2

We all know the words of “The 12 Days of Christmas,” even though we may not remember how many lords are leaping or ladies dancing. But what many of us do not realize is that the 12 days do not lead up to Dec. 25 but rather begin Dec. 25 and end Jan. 5, which is known as Epiphany, or the day the Magi visited Jesus. It is also the end of Christmas celebrations. According to the “Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes,” the earliest printed version of this poem dates back to 1780 in the book “Mirth Without Mischief.” In that version, it was an English chant or a poem. It was not set to music but written in a form called cumulative verse. Other researchers believe the poem is older than 1780, beginning in France. The tune we know today as “The 12 Days of Christmas” was composed around 1909 by Frederic Austin, who changed some of the poem’s lyrics. (You can blame him for the “f-i-i-i-ve golden rings.” According to an article in Good Housekeeping in 2024, the original lyrics list “four colly birds,” instead of “four calling birds.” Colly” was an old English slang term for a blackbird. In addition, instead of a partridge sitting in that pear tree, the original list included a “very pretty peacock upon a pear tree.”

continued from front girls. This year Ragsdale has seven girls who wrestle other girl teams in the state. “We are the only high school in Guilford County that has a girl’s team,” Tahirkheli said. “We have to do a lot of travel to get matches for our girls.” The 2024-2025 Ragsdale wrestling team included three girls who wrestled with the boys. Some won their matches. “I was careful who the girls wrestled against,” Tahirkheli said. “If I thought the opponent was too tough, I would forfeit a match rather then have the girl wrestle with them.” “Girls love this sport and have really taken to it,” said Mike Holder, Ragsdale’s athletic director. “They are good at it.” “Girls are tougher than a lot of boys and are ready to jump into anything I throw at them,” Tahirkheli said. “Practices are hard and it takes a special person to show up each day. “Wrestling is a combat sport. Wrestlers must throw their fear away and be focused mentally, ready to hurt someone. Everyone gets hurt sometime during the season, but they still come to practice every day.” “It is a mindset everyone on the team has,” Tahirkheli said. “‘I can get through it and keep going.’” Tahirkheli is in the process of building up the school’s wrestling teams for the boys and girls. Many have never wrestled before and have to learn all the techniques involved. “I had adopted the same type of practices that Mike Raybon had,” Tahirkheli said. (Raybon began the wrestling program at Ragsdale and later became the school’s athletic director.) “I put a lot of our kids on the jayvee team. This year I have a team full of freshmen, but they have learned fast. “All but two on the girls’ team are freshmen. It is a young team, but they are very supportive of each other. One freshman girl is ranked fifth in the state.” The teams have an hour of study hall before their two-hour practice. The official wrestling season runs from Oct. 30 to the end of February, but wrestlers participate in tournaments all school year
and during the summer. Students cannot wrestle under the school name or gear in the offseason so they have formed their own club in order to compete. Called “Ambush” they designed their own clothing — girls wear green and pink and the boys wear green and silver. “The kids are very dedicated to getting better at the sport,” Tahirkheli said. “They really wanted this to happen, I just coach. “For this year’s competitions I only put the girls wrestling with girls. Now the girls have an equal opportunity to participate.” Co-captains Amari McCleary and Liza Paw, both freshman, recruited other girls to be on the team. “They are tough and do a lot for the team,” Tahirkheli said. “They keep both the girls and boys in line. They are intense and willing to tell the boys to ‘suck it up.’ They help train the other girls and run little clinics for them. “These two girls dominate every match they are in and have some of the best stats in the state. “We have tried to push revolutionizing the sport further in our area and are glad it is being recognized. There are only about 34 schools in North Carolina with a girls' team and we hope that eventually they can set up conference matches.” For girls who enjoy the sport but do not want to wrestle, Ragsdale still has the Wrestlerette program. “They make the world go round,” Tahirkheli said. “They keep scores at tournaments, record every match, keep medical equipment in order and make sure uniforms are clean and ready. Last year there were six girls, but this year there is only one.” Tahirkheli’s sister, Ruby Diaz, participated as a Wrestlerette when he wrestled at Ragsdale. Now, she trains all the new girls who are interested in that activity. Currently the Ragsdale wrestling teams are accepting donations to pay for warmup uniforms and workout equipment. Contact the school if you are willing to contribute.
road
continued from front coming toward Main on Guilford (then called Guilford College Road) veered around a traffic island before yielding to traffic on Main. The change eliminated the traffic island and the intersection was made into a T-shape. Another change brought on by the road widening was the construction of the brick retaining wall along West Main Street at the site of the Potter House. Frezell said the house was so close to the widened road that the wall was “needed to support and protect the property.” Another improvement at this time was the placing of an underground vault at the Ragsdale/Dillon intersection. That area had been prone to flooding and the vault was necessary to alleviate the problem. Since 1997, Jamestown has continued the Main Street beautification with the addition of trees, planters, unified-design street signs, the construction of Wrenn Miller Park, seasonal flags, stamped crosswalks and many other projects. Sidewalk construction also continues around town, with both the East Fork Road/pedestrian bridge and East Main Street (Lydia) sidewalk projects constructed in recent years. These projects were discussed for years but it took until a 1997 study for them to be officially suggested, separate from the Main Street Improvement Project. The Oakdale Road sidewalk project has been done in fits and starts and is still unfinished.
Another sidewalk project has been discussed along the town’s western boundary at Penny Road to the back entrance of City Lake Park. Once completed, residents would have the option of walking a loop around the town from the east to west boundaries. The year 2026 is projected to see a water line replacement from Ragsdale/ Dillon roads to Guilford Road. The bid was delayed for a couple of months while waiting for NCDOT to review and approve the plans which were done on Nov. 5 according to Public Services Director Paul Blanchard. “We received the approval and Encroachment Agreement (EA) on Nov. 6,” he said. “The EA has several conditions that we are obligated to comply with. We needed to provide an addendum to the contract to all bidders to address the EA, and it was delivered on Nov. 7.” The cost is $1,187,852. While the water line needs replacement, construction will impact the U.S. Post Office as well as businesses along Main Street that are open evenings. The first phase will be in the east-bound lane from Ragsdale Road to Oakdale Road. From there the work will cross the intersection to the west-bound lane of Main Street to just short of Guilford Road. Only one lane of traffic will be open during construction, which is estimated to take 210 days.

continued from front still interesting to consider. According to this theory, each gift represents a different aspect of Christian faith. • The partridge in a pear tree is Jesus Christ. • The two turtle dove are the Old and New Testaments. • The Three French Hens are the theological virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity. • The four calling birds are the four gospels. • The five golden rings are the first five books of the Old Testament. • The six geese-laying represent the six days of creation. • The seven swans a-swimming are the gifts of the Holy Spirit, or the seven sacraments. • The eight maids a-milking are the eight beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount. • The nine ladies dancing represent the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit mentioned in fifth chapter of the Book of Galatians. • The 10 lords a-leaping are the Ten Commandments. • The 11 pipers piping are the 11 faithful apostles. • The 12 drummers drumming are the 12 points of the Apostle’s Creed.

Couch Theatre By deMi TAVeRAS If I Had Legs, I’d Kick You (r) — Rose Byrne leads this psychological drama that is out now to rent. Her performance has already earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy). With an unexpected supporting cast consisting of Conan O’Brien, A$AP Rocky and Christian Slater, it’s a twisty case study of a woman at her wits’ end with comedic elements that keep viewers wanting more. Byrne plays a psychotherapist named Linda, whose life is collapsing around her. (Literally, as the ceiling of her apartment collapses and floods her entire home.) She cares for her daughter, who suf-
fers from a feeding disorder, while her husband is away for weeks at a time for work. Add to this a tumultuous relationship with her own therapist and one of her clients disappearing, and it’d be enough to drive anyone insane! the regal recipe to carry You from christmas to the new Year By PATTi diAMOnd DiVaS oN a DiMe After the whirlwind of Christmas cooking, I like to glide into the last week of the year with recipes that practically make themselves. This is the stretch when time feels wobbly, leftovers rule the fridge and we’re all leaning toward lighter meals that don’t require much effort. Let me introduce you to an old
classic: Coronation Chicken Salad, the make-ahead marvel we all need right now. If you’ve ever enjoyed English tea sandwiches, you’ve likely met this jewel of a recipe. Created in 1953 for Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation luncheon, it has been gracing tea tables and ladies’ luncheons ever since. Think of it as chicken salad that went to finishing school but still knows how to have fun.

This is an ideal “between holidays” dish. It can be made ahead, improves overnight and waits patiently in the fridge until hunger strikes. The magic comes from a creamy dressing kissed with curry, a bit of fruit for sweetness, a squeeze of lemon for brightness and toasted almonds for crunch. It’s comforting yet fresh, transforming humble chicken into something fit for a celebration. Below is the classic version, made from scratch. But here’s a secret: This recipe is wonderfully forgiving. Leftover roast chicken works beautifully, and a rotisserie chicken is a perfectly acceptable shortcut. A note on mango chutney: Many traditional recipes call for Major Grey’s mango chutney. It does add subtle depth, but not enough to justify buying a whole jar for just a few tablespoons, unless you plan to make this often or already enjoy chutney. coronation chicken salad yield: 8 servings total time: 50 minutes 1 1/4 pounds (4 cups) cooked chicken, diced (all breasts or a mix) 1/2 cup sliced almonds, toasted

Shred or cut the chicken into small, evenly sized pieces (about 1/2-inch). Toast the almonds. Set aside. In a large bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, sour cream or yogurt, curry powder, ginger, lemon juice and sugar. Add celery, onions, salt and pepper. Stir to combine. Fold in the chicken, almonds and dried fruit. Add a little more mayo if it looks dry. Season and adjust flavors to your liking: with additional salt and pepper, more curry for warmth, more lemon for zing. Allow the salad to rest in the fridge at least 30 minutes before serving. The flavors bloom over time, and it keeps beautifully for up to four days. serving ideas: • Spoon onto crackers for an instant snack.
• Serve over mixed greens for a lighter lunch. • Serve with basmati rice. • Make tea sandwiches or mini croissants for a New Year’s brunch board. • Roll into lettuce cups to balance out a month of cookies. As we wrap up one year and step (thankfully) into the next, here’s a recipe that makes it all feel easier. A little sweet, a little savory and a whole lot of comfort. And that, my friends, feels like the right way to start 2026. Happy New Year from Divas On A Dime!
