in Jamestown isn’t in Jamestown at all … or is it?
The High Point City Lake Park has the Jamestown address of 602 W. Main St., but once you turn off Main Street into the park, you are within High Point city limits. Coming from High Point, you cross Jamestown town limits at Penny Road, but later pass the big sign announcing the park across the street from the Mendenhall Homeplace.
To compound the problem, the park is on land that was part of the original “old” Jamestown, before the downtown moved farther east. The main entrance to the park is the original Union Street of the old town.
When you’re in Jamestown and say you’re going
to “the park,” is it City Lake Park or Jamestown Park where the golf course is located? Confusing, isn’t it?
History
George C. Mendenhall was the original owner of the land where the park is situated. He is the man who laid out the streets and lots of what is now “old” Jamestown. According to the late historian Mary Browning, in her book, “Historical Places in Jamestown,

Whether or not a piece of property that appears to be in Greensboro but is actually in Jamestown’s extra-territorial jurisdiction becomes part of the town is the main topic of business at the Jamestown Town Council’s June 24 meeting during two public hearings.
The request by True Homes is for 5125 R1 Atwater Dr., a wooded, 18.02acre parcel of land located between the Fox Hollow subdivision along Adams Farm Parkway and the new D.R. Horton development along Mackay Road.
The site is currently zoned Agricultural (AG) but True Homes requests the change to Conditional Zoning-Single Family Residential (CS-SFR) to construct 73 detached homes, the maximum allowed by Jamestown. That equates to approximately 4.1 homes per acre, with a minimum of 10 feet between buildings. Adjacent land uses include Single Family Residential, Agricultural including Residential and Single Family, and Conditional ZoningPlanned Use Development (D.R. Horton). documentary about Hawley’s cancer recovery to be shown at HPU

On Aug. 27, 2023, Sam Hawley, who lived in Wilmington, N.C., at the time, suffered a massive seizure while talking to his father Faison on the phone. He had told his father he felt weird before the conversation ended abruptly.
Realizing something was dreadfully wrong, his mother Lisa, owner of Southern Roots in Jamestown, immediately called Sam’s friends and told them to check on him as quickly as possible. His parents headed to Wilmington and went straight to the hospital. They learned he had been diagnosed with a stage-four glioblastoma brain tumor, one of the most aggressive forms of cancer.
Five days later, he was at Duke University Hospital where the tumor was removed and his journey to recovery began.
The Feagin Leadership Program at Duke University Medical Center has produced a 43-minute documentary detailing Sam’s experience. “The Power of Purpose: The Sam Hawley Story” will be shown June 22 at 4 p.m. at High Point University at Congdon School of Health Sciences, Callicutt Life Skills Theater. Admission is free.
Parking is available in the parking deck directly behind Congdon Hall. The best way to access the parking deck is through the entrance at N. Centennial Street and Qubein Avenue. Officers will be available to direct
those attending the screening to the parking deck. In an interview for the Jamestown News in February, Sam described his life before the brain tumor as chaotic.
“Fitness and eating well were not my goals,” he said. “It was not a life with purpose. Now I am more connected with God and put him first. He has given me peace and I feel like the man he wants me to be.
Water kiosk offers refreshment to walkers
By nORMa B. dennIs FreeLANCe WrIter ndworddesign@gmail.com
On any given day, people, often accompanied by their dogs, may be seen walking along Guilford Road in Jamestown. The beautiful brick sidewalks seem to encourage the activity.
When Jan Purser was considering ideas of how the congregation at Jamestown Friends Meeting, located on a large lot at the corner of Guilford and East Fork roads, could connect in a meaningful way with the community, the thought of a water kiosk for walkers came to mind.
“You see lots of book lending boxes in the area and the Methodist church has a food Blessing Box,” Purser said. The water station
“When it is extremely hot, people sometimes carry their own water bottles with them. The kiosk seems to be used more in the spring when people start off walking and get thirsty along the way.”
for those walking by just seemed like a good fit.”
After getting permission for the project from the meeting’s session, Purser contacted Brian Haney, a former area resident and Ragsdale graduate, who volunteered his time and supplies to build the box to hold bottles of water. It and a bench on which to rest
were placed under a shade tree south of the meeting’s driveway.
“I thought it would be nice to do something different,” Purser said. “We have had it there for two years and it keeps growing in popularity. The box holds 25 bottles of water and I average putting out about 83 bottles each month.
“There has never been a concern about the water’s temperature,” said Kathy Adams, the meeting’s clerk.
“Being in the shade helps and even in the winter the water has never frozen solid.”
A sign on the front of the water kiosk requests that empty bottles be replaced in the box and Purser recycles them.

Ask The Pastor what is the Bible?
By Pas TOR

Dear Pastor Sid, I think I know the answer to my question but please help me out. What is the Bible? — Tom in High Point
Hi Tom in High Point, I think that we dealt with this question, but here is my response.
The Bible is God’s Word, and is made up of 66 books. These books were written by men inspired by God. It is divided into two main parts: the Old Testament which is “old” because of its time period. The information of the Old Testament took place from around 4004BC to 500BC. There are 39 books in our Old Testaments. In the New Testament there are 27 books and covers a time period of around 4BC to AD95. Overall, about 40 different authors penned the words of the Bible. The Bible is 100% accurate, and all data is true. It is not a book on science but all scientific references are accurate. All historical data is accurate as well as geographical information. So read the Bible, believe the Bible, share the Bible, and know that God’s Word will keep you in the arms of God until the end of life.
WHo iS JeSuS?
Dear Pastor Sid,
The people where I work always talk about how Jesus did this and Jesus said that. But who is Jesus? Keep your answer simple because I am a new church attender. — Don in Archdale
Hi Don in Archdale, Here is a simple answer for you. Jesus is God! He came to earth and lived among human life. He is basically God on Two Feet! Read about His birth in Luke chapter 2 and in Matthew chapter 2. Read about His death and resurrection in the last two chapters of each Gospel.
Ask The Pastor is written by Pastor Dr. Sid Stewart, from the Hoover’s Grove Wesleyan Church, 5399 Jackson Creek Rd, Denton. Pastor Sid’s teaching motto is: Making the Complex Simple. If you have a question about the Bible, please email Pastor Sid at moses43@juno.com and it will soon be answered in this column. Also take time to visit Dr. Stewart Productions, a YouTube Channel produced by Dr. Stewart where you will find over 650 videos and slide presentations of a variety of topics.

necting to the community. Approximately 15 years ago they began to lease, for a nominal fee, boxed in areas for those in the community who desired to plant a garden but did not have room at their homes.
The demand was so great, the size of the garden area grew and it was fenced in to keep wildlife out.
There is also a basketball court and picnic shelter behind the meetinghouse that may be used by the community.
Numerous organizations use the facility for meetings, including a local HOA, the Historic Jamestown Society, Alternative to Violence and the Triad Early Music Society.
“Jamestown Friends is a loving, caring community,” Adams said. “We have a nice facility and lots of property and want to use it wisely.”
“The water kiosk was one more outreach, another tangible thing we could do for the community,” Purser added.
was flooded to form what is now Arnold J. Koonce, Jr., City Lake. The water destroyed structures, most notably the house and mill of James Mendenhall, George C.’s grandfather. Foundation stones from the mill can be seen from the bridge on Penny Road during low water levels.
The dam on Deep River was constructed in 1928 to form the lake, replacing a smaller reservoir used for city water. The lake holds 1.5 billion gallons of water. Mules were used to bring in equipment and timber for construction and all labor was by manpower, digging out with shovels and picks.
The dam is showing its age and is scheduled to be replaced within the next few years.
The idea for the park C.G. Mackintosh’s company had been hired to clear the land for the lake and he suggested a park be built beside the new lake. Mackintosh, of Charlotte, had been so taken with the High Point area that he moved to the town.
He convinced High Point “recreation” director William F. Bailey that a park would be a good idea. Bailey contacted landscape architect R.D. Tilson for plans and he agreed, charging only $100 for the plans. Mayor C.S. Grayson actually went to Washington, D.C., to talk to officials. According to Gary Pressley, former senior park supervisor for the CHP, the “Depression probably brought together a host of very talented professional men who would not have been involved otherwise. The park as it exists owes its existence to the Depression.”
The park was constructed between 1933-35, the first major city park in the state and the pool was the largest in the southeast. The park offered the opportunity for work for the unemployed during the Depression.
The Civil Works Administration (CWA), and later the Works Progress Administration (WPA), were part of President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal plan to provide work to idle laborers. More than $300,000 federal funds were given to construct the park and was completed by CWA workers.
Pressley worked at City Lake Park for over 28 years and has become the unof-
Friends describe themselves with the words simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality and stewardship. The defining characteristics of the Quaker meeting house and their worship services reflect these traits. Unlike must church services, the Quakers break theirs into two segments. They have time for programmed worship and a time for unprogrammed or silent worship. If lead by the Spirit, individuals may speak up during that time to share what is on their hearts.
With community being part of the focus for Quakers, members of Jamestown Friends Meeting have already begun discussions about additional ways to be involved in its outreach. They invite others to join them on Sundays for forum (Sunday school) at 10 a.m. and worship at 11 a.m. The church is located at 509 Guilford Road, Jamestown.

ficial historian of the park.
“There were as many as 500 workers at one time (on the project),” he said. “They worked three days a week and were paid $5 a day. Some worked on their days off just to have something to do.
“If the economy had been good, [the park] might never have happened.”
A report at the time said “This was reported to be the greatest cooperation of professional men at one time in High Point because of the Depression. You had so many people with professional backgrounds that would not have worked on this project if the times were not hard.”
The lake covers 340 acres and is stocked with catfish, hybrid bass, crappie, bluegill, sunfish, brim, and at one time had fresh-water shrimp. It first opened for fishing in 1930.
The first piece of playground equipment installed in 1936 was a large swing set, purchased with a $100 donation from the Junior League. It was a good investment — the set lasted until 2001.
Playground equipment has changed over the years.
From 1957 until 2000, a retired fire truck was a popular attraction for children to climb on and pretend to drive as well as a real jet plane. Over the years, both were removed and replaced with the current playground equipment.
From 1973-92, High Point charged non-residents to use the park and earned the City of High Point as much as $18,000 per year at its peak.
“I worked the second day the gate was open, on a Sunday,” said Pressley. “You talk about catching heck.
I did. Jamestown residents were being charged. High Point residents could get in as long as they had the High Point city tag. Then High Point and Jamestown got into a reciprocal agreement that High Point wouldn’t charge Jamestown folks.
The revenue dropped and we stopped in 1992.”
The Olympic-sized swimming pool opened June 28, 1935, after being delayed a few days due to a polio scare. Teenagers danced to music from the jukebox at the openair stone pavilion. Dressing rooms were on the bottom floor, under the pavilion, which was later replaced by a gym and more recently by the Meeting & Event Center.
“The huge swimming pool (is) said to be the most perfectly designed and constructed (as) well as the largest pool in this section of the South,” according to a newspaper report at the time. “Passing motorists … slowed down to get a glimpse of the sight.”
The pool has since been remodeled.
The dam hosted the National Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) women’s swimming and diving championship events in 1941, 1950 and 1963. A wooden diving platform was constructed on the dam so participants could dive into the lake.
So, whether you think the City Lake Park is in High Point or Jamestown, it doesn’t really matter. Both municipalities benefit from the facility and many locals go there to have a quiet lunch during the week.
Quiet, that is, until the Canada Geese get quacking.

I let go of a lot of the old me and completely changed my life for the better.”
During a six-week period following his brain tumor surgery, Hawley ran 120 miles while undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments. He entered and won grueling Spartan races and has since started a fundraiser race in High Point called The Warriors Path to earn money for the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke Hospital.
Sam owns a marketing and media company, but also became a certified fitness trainer and began a company called Elevated Fitness and Nutrition. This allows him to help people with health problems, especially those with the same diagnosis he had.
Today he lives in Winston-Salem, and continues to use three words to keep him focused – prayer, motivation and discipline.
“The documentary is very inspi-
rational,” Lisa said, encouraging everyone to see it. “Sam will be at the showing to thank others for praying him well. We thank High Point University for its support, Duke for its medical care and for making the documentary and most of all God.”
Lisa summed it up in the Jamestown News article about her son’s recovery, “Sam is a walking, living miracle.”

Grain Bowls Just Got a Green Goddess makeover
Everyone needs a solution to the never-ending question: “What’s for dinner?” If you want to streamline meals without sacrificing flavor or nutrition, meal prepping grain bowls is a game-changer.
These versatile bowls feature healthy grains, fresh veggies and flavor-packed toppings for a satisfying lunch or dinner. Whether you’re new to meal prep or looking for new ideas, grain bowls are an easy, healthy, budget-friendly way to stay on track with your eating goals.
This pantry powerhouse is nutty, chewy and satisfying — plus, it’s cheap and easy to cook, making it perfect for meal prepping ahead.
In 1 cup of cooked pearl barley, you get 3.6 grams of protein and 6 grams of fiber — that’s some serious staying power for a humble grain that cooks while you sip your iced tea.
SiMPLY PeARL BARLeY
Yield: 4 servings
Total Time: 30 minutes
1 cup barley (pearled)
3 cups water or vegetable broth
Pinch of salt
Rinse the barley under cold running water. In a medium saucepan, bring the water or broth to a boil. Add the rinsed barley and salt. Bring to a simmer then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer 25 minutes until tender but still slightly chewy. Remove from heat and rest, covered, for 5 minutes, then drain any excess liquid. Fluff with a fork and use immediately — or cool and store in the fridge for meal prep.
nance 8.3(C) describes CZSFR as “The Single-Family Residential District (SFR) provides for the completion of existing residential neighborhoods and the development of new residential neighborhoods in a pattern that encourages the wise use of land. Neighborhoods in this district are the dominant land use in Jamestown and are a major element in defining the character of the community.”
Jeff Guernier, a market partner with True Homes, addressed the Planning Board in April. The company, located in Monroe, N.C., recently completed Boulding Branch Estates in High Point.
The one- or two-car homes would be available in several designs from which the purchaser may choose.
“We target first time/ first time/move-up buyers,” Guernier said. “Most builders build spec homes and people buy what they see. We have a 4,000-foot design center that allows our buyers to customize their home, pick the fit and finish that goes into those homes.”
He said the majority of the homes would be pre-sold.
“Pricing will be $310,000-
You know I love a good recipe mash-up, right? Well, hold on to your socks for this one! If you’re a fan of grain bowls for their versatility and balance, and you love Green Goddess salads for their vibrant, nutrientpacked goodness, this one’s for you.
Just like a grain bowl, the Green Goddess salad is a perfect base for customization. See where I’m going with this? Let’s make a Green Goddess Grain Bowl!
You can’t have a Green Goddess salad without the dressing, typically made with ingredients like avocado, herbs (like parsley, cilantro and chives), lemon or lime juice (I used lime here), and yogurt or sour cream, which gives the salad a fresh, herbaceous flavor that’s both tangy and satisfying.
GReeN GoDDeSS SALAD DReSSiNG
Yield: 1 cup
Total Time: 10 minutes
2 tablespoons fresh cilantro
2 tablespoons fresh parsley
1 teaspoon dried dill
1 avocado, diced 1/2 cup plain yogurt
COU n CIL
$375,000 in the current market.”
The homes will be constructed on slabs and there will be sidewalks on both sides of the street.
During the public comment portion of the Planning Board meeting, several residents near the proposed development voiced their concerns, including traffic problems, the desire for larger homes and no allowance for visitor parking.
Town staff believe the request to rezone the property is consistent with the Comp Plan and recommends approval of the request. The report noted the Town’s Guiding Principles 1, 2, 10 were met. The Town’s Technical Review Committee reviewed the proposed rezoning on March 27. A detailed subdivision and construction plan review will be required prior to the issuance of any construction and Development Clearance Certificates (DCC).
When the Planning Board voted on April 12, the decision was mixed, with five members voting for the rezoning and two voting against it.
If the Town Council votes in favor, it will require an
amendment to the Land Development Ordinance.

There also will be a public hearing for consideration of the proposed budget and Capital Improvement Plan for fiscal year 2025-26.

The Council will consider adopting the Town’s updated Strategic Plan.
Several people will be recognized with resolutions and Mayor Lynn Montgomery will honor those who graduated from the Town’s first Citizen Academy but could not attend the May meeting.
The Council will meet at 6 p.m. in the Civic Center at Town Hall. The meeting may be viewed online at www.youtube.com/c/ TownofJamestownNC. Click on “Live.”
1 green onion, chopped 1 small clove garlic, smashed 1 lime, juice and zest 1/4 cup olive oil
2 tablespoons white wine vinegar Salt and pepper, to taste
Place all dressing ingredients in a food processor or blender and process until smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste. This dressing is potent! Add additional yogurt to taste, if desired.
To prep barley: Toss together the cooked barley with 1/3 cup dressing, stir, taste and adjust seasonings. Refrigerate until needed. This is delicious. Try to leave some for the salad.
To assemble salad: For the salad itself, let’s start with a bed of mixed greens with a serving of cooked barley. Toss 1/3 cup dressing with prepared salad greens (8 cups for 4 servings) in a large bowl. Divide evenly among serving bowls. Add barley.
Then add an array of colorful vegetables like cucumber, bell peppers, tomatoes, green and red onion, sliced carrots and avocado. Top with the remaining dressing. For added protein, try topping your salad with cooked chicken or fish — grilled salmon pairs particularly well with the herby dressing. This vibrant veggie and protein-packed combo delivers a satisfying, balanced meal that’s perfect for any time of day. Enjoy!
• Add a cinnamon stick or softener sheet to your vacuum bag when you change it. While you clean, you will distribute the good smell throughout your home.
• To ripen a green tomato, wrap it in a sheet of newspaper or place it in a paper bag. It can then be left on the counter for several days to ripen.
• “Need to remove fruit or food coloring stains on your hands or your countertop? White vinegar will clean it off. It’s good for so many things.” — R.N. in Washington
• “Instead of baking soda, I use three or four charcoal briquettes in a bowl to control odor and moisture in my refrigerator. I place the briquettes in a shallow dish, then cover the top of the bowl with a small piece of cheesecloth and secure it with a fat rubber band. The best thing is that I can still use these briquettes on the grill. In the summer, they get changed very regularly.” — M.L. in Virginia
• When it comes to fruits and vegetables, five a day is nice, but more matters. Try setting aside time after you come home from the grocery store for prepping fruits and vegetables. Pre-bag snack sizes of carrots, celery, strawberries, grapes, cantaloupe and apples. Pre-cut veggies for meals to make later in the week. Slice tomatoes and onions for sandwiches, and tear and separate lettuce for salads. They all make great, healthy treats, and it makes it easier to get your recommended servings!
• Have a stained coffee pot but don’t want to use a harsh chemical cleanser to scrub that stain off? For gritty cleaning power, try using a tablespoon of milk and a tablespoon of salt. The salt gives you scrubbing power, and the milk’s acids help gently dissolve the stains.
