Creativity, talent and a desire for self-expression are essential to being an artist, but making a living and growing as an artist also requires commitment, business skills and a strategic approach. The artistic milieu is as competitive and challenging as the business world or the job market, so in order to make your mark, you will be required to distinguish yourself not only through your work, but also through entrepreneurial efforts. This conference will help you find the tools you need to succeed.
Keynote Speakers Liane Balaban Featured in New Waterford Girl, One Week, Last Chance Harvey and Definitely, Maybe. It’s been 10 years since Liane Balaban made her film debut as a 15-year-old misfit longing to escape her Cape Breton coal-mining town in New Waterford Girl (1999). After a series of film and television roles in Canada and the United States, Liane appeared in her first mainstream Hollywood feature, Definitely, Maybe in 2008, and then in Last Chance Harvey, a romance starring Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson, in January of 2009. Her upcoming films include You Might As Well Live with Michael Madsen and Coach with Hugh Dancy. In her spare time Liane writes poetry and fiction and enhances her comedy chops at Theatre Ste. Catherine.
Andy Nulman President, Mobile Entertainment
P OW! RIGHT BETWEEN THE EYES! Profiting from the Power of Surprise Desperate for work at the age of 23 after being fired from his journalism job, Andy joined a two-night, French-language humour event starting up in Montreal. When he left 15 years later as its CEO and driving force, the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival was the biggest and most prestigious of its kind on earth, attracting more than 2 million visitors over a month-long period. Then, in 1999, Andy co-founded Airborne Mobile in the burgeoning new industry of mobile media and marketing. Less than seven years later, sold to Japan’s Cybird Holdings for $110 million only to buy it back three years after that for a second go. For way, way less. Andy has written two bestselling books, How To Do The Impossible and I Almost Killed George Burns, with a third, Pow! Right Between The Eyes just published by Wiley USA in February 2009. Married with two grown children and two rambunctious dogs, his major disappointment is that he has only one life to live…but he’s working on a solution.
